Watch Buying Mistakes? Breitling Navitimer or Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch? Rolex Under Loupe

  • Rolex gets the night off… for the most part! Watch buyers, watch sellers, and watch collectors agree; Watches Tonight with Tim Mosso is the place to “watch,” discuss, and laugh about the hobby of luxury watch collecting. We open with a discussion of hilarious attempts to counterfeit A Lange & Sohne and Jaeger LeCoultre timepieces. A viewer’s question about the Patek Philippe 5170R leads to a clarification of Tim’s stance on this 39.4mm chronograph; it’s a viable unisex watch option, not a “ladies’ watch.” We consider the relevance of the modern Breitling Navitimer and whether Tim would advise choosing it over the Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch Co-Axial Chronograph. One viewer’s question about loupes for viewing his watch collections precipitates a surprising response; you don’t need to spend $600 on the “Loupe System for Hodinkee” in order to get a clear and detailed view of your prized Rolex Daytona sodalite dial or your Audeamars Piguet Royal Oak 15202 with caliber 2121. A standard Bausch & Lomb plastic jeweler’s loupe and headband halo will do the job for under $50 U.S. When do you want to Tonight’s show includes an extensive discussion of how to buy watches when significant others. In fact, Tim arrives armed with advice for watch collectors; these are the common mistakes frequently made when buying watches… and how to avoid them. True, marriage diplomacy requires creative solutions to ensure that a watch arrives on good terms with the entire household. But Tim also offers unconventional wisdom; don’t settle for a Breitling Colt Skyracer or a Hamilton Intra-Matic 68 when what you really want is a Rolex Submariner or an Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch. Moreover, ask critical and revealing questions when buying a watch whether it’s a $100 vintage Sicura or a $50,000 Grand Seiko 8 Day Spring Drive. Finally, Tim discusses why he cannot always answer every individual email about which Omega, Breitling, Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, and Rolex that watch buyers and watch collectors plan to purchase. All of this and watch collector wrist shots will be featured this evening on Watches Tonight!

    Your breakdown of the "value proposition" idea was spot on.
    I did a lot of that early on in my collecting, buying almost haphazardly less expensive watches - I couldn't afford X so bought Y and was never satisfied. Realized I was going about it wrong. Pared my collection to a couple nice pieces and a couple less expensive watches, all get worn because I genuinely love them.
    Buy what you like. If it's too expensive now, start saving. You'll be so satisfied when you get it.

    You are so right about the two guys. :-D For a Grand Seiko, I had to promise vacations in Japan. (It's not so extravagant as you would think anyway because ordering from Japan would cost a ton in VAT and customs tax - so you're essentially spending the money you would pay on tax for travel.)

    Well the retail on an Omega Alligator and deployant will weigh in at close to $700. So you get $300 in value for $100 which is still a no brainer. Of course you can pick up a strap and deployant aftermarket for a lot less than going OEM but for the sake of comparison OEM to OEM. However for Omega I hate how the bracelet leaves 2 gouges on the back of lugs from the supporting tabs on the end links but that’s just my OCD. Other brands do bracelets without those tabs, why can’t Omega do that?

    The best thing I learned and the best advice I can give is buy what you truly want. Never settle or talk yourself into a purchase. You’ll regret settling and in the end, you’ll end up spending more because you’ll eventually purchase it anyways and still be stuck with the watch that you settled for.

    • @the1916company
      @the1916company  5 лет назад

      The Hamilton is a slick piece. It's just the wrong watch for somebody who isn't looking... specifically for that watch. As long as the goal watch doesn't cost $99,000 or some crazy number, waiting a bit longer and saving for the desired prize always seems to be worth it.
      Best,

      WatchBox Reviews thank you for the insight, Tim. Glad I do own a Sixties (the green textured dial one from this year) - love that thing to bits. The Pano would be my next GO acquisition, probably the Lunar, or maybe the Inverse. Cheers.

    • @TruckeeDoggo
      @TruckeeDoggo 5 лет назад +2

      The Senator Sixties is their most core and iconic. It’s basically the same design as the Spezimatic made for decades by GUB, the state owned predecessor to Glashutte when East Germany (and thus the Glashutte region) was under communist rule. Funny thing, you can get a vintage Spezimatic from the those iron curtain days for a few hundred bucks from
      eBay, whereas the new one is a piece of high horology. Obviously new ones are made to much higher quality levels but I think vintage GUB will one day start surging in price

    Thanks for showcasing my dear IWC Portuguese Tim.
    It was one of my first pieces acquired from Govberg a few years ago.
    Still in mint condition as you can see 😂
    Now regarding today's show..
    One of the most diverse shows from a content perspective. Just loved it!
    The discussion about watches vs partners is definitively a fascinating one.
    From my experience, it's always key to be transparent about your timepieces' value (not only price) with your significant one.
    That means help your partner to understand that a luxury timepiece might retain or gain value at a certain extent, can be passed along to your kids in the future and be even sold if needed.
    Once you get to this level of understanding it gets much easier to justify an acquisition.
    A quick hint that worked for me: take your significant one to an auction.
    The moment my wife saw so many people paying serious money for timepieces things clicked for her! 👍
    Best,
    Amintas

    Watch box store online is way.......... over priced , why would I pay for a used watch full retail . Example Mayor store has submariner Rolex base price $8,500 to order while watch box has the same watch starting at $11,000 and up and it’s used. Really ?! I wish I could insert screen shots. And than the offer on a watch is a joke. Again !,,, Authentic watch store sells new watches for less . Watch box buys your Rolex for $between 2000 and $5000 sells it for $11000 or $15000 .lol what a joke lol

    • @the1916company

      Hi - If you are able to procure a Rolex steel model at retail price, we suggest you do so. Many watches are trading above their retail price on the secondary market and we have to pay more than retail to acquire them. Our pricing is fairly consistent with market pricing, because the market for Rolex is very competitive. Thanks for you feedback!

    I receive upwards of 120 meaningful emails a day (setting aside the usual non-critical stuff) in connection with active files I have on at any one time. I fully understand the inability to keep up and at times the overwhelming influx is paralysing both in terms of brain power required to formulate cogent responses (and also remain aloof from the sometimes irresistible desire to descend into the inane and questionably (in)appropriate sarcasm, humour and pathos) and allocation of time to actually achieve concrete progress on a daily and/or weekly basis. I feel your pain and, whilst recognising the frustration that can be engendered by a lack of response to an email that the sender may consider 'priority', there comes a time when you have to pull up the drawbridge, step back and focus on the 'why' and the 'how' rather than simply the 'who' or the 'what'. The content of these videos is demonstration and corroboration (if required and, in my opinion, its not) of your work ethic and application of knowledge of the subject and it seems to me that this focus is preferable (and paramount) to the benefit of the wider audience. Just my humble opinion of course.

    Navitimer GMT: timezone ace
    A trustworthy companion of airborne adventurers, the Navitimer has always viewed the world as its playground. The new Navitimer GMT confirms this vocation. Breitling decided to think big in creating this chronograph with a traveller's soul. User friendliness is guaranteed by the ingenious Manufacture Breitling Caliber B04, clearly visible through the transparent caseback and equipped with a dual timezone system boasting peerless functionality: simply pulling out the crown and turning it forwards or backwards in one-hour increments enables instant setting of the travel timezone date and hour -- while maintaining a home-time display in 24-hour mode and without losing any precision in terms of the minutes. The large-format steel case with its imposing 48 mm diameter frames a perfectly readable instrument panel. The new Navitimer GMT comes with two faces -- a classic dial in black with silver counters or an all silver version -- and may be fitted with a steel bracelet or a leather or crocodile strap. It is also available in a 200-piece red gold limited edition with a black dial.
