hmmm...maybe not well-known or famous but I wouldn't say he was underrated. I've never anyone say " that Holdsworth, you know, he's not that good". If you know of him you realize he's really good. BTW did you know he HATED the stuff he did with UK ? My jaw dropped when I read that.
alien. Allan wont be replicated. He was crazy in that if he saw or heard someone play something - he erased it from his repertoire. SOOOO unique always. Zappa was a big fan and that's saying a TON.
Just yesterday listened to the Bruford-album 'gradually going tornado' with Dave on keys...what impressed me even more was Jeff Berlin on bass...very astonishing!
For sure! Egg, HaTN and National Health were all amazing, and I thoroughly believe Dave has such a unique and tasteful style throughout so much of his career. Definitely worth more than the praise he receives >.>
Bill, the talent that you surrounded yourself with throughout your musical career is just astounding. I have been, and will continue to be a lifelong fan of your music.
Man..! Everybody looks so young in this... I got the privilege of seeing 3 bassists (Jeff Berlin, Billy Sheehan, and Stu Hamm) in a 320 seat venue..in 2010 or so.. Tickets were only $20..!!! What a privilege.. Besides the learning exprience.. and the incredible music.. was Jeff cracking self deprecating "bass player jokes from the stage"..❣ Never misses the chance to educate while entertaining.. I have admired his playing since I first heard him on your, One Of A Kind, album..❣👍 Truly special moments captured here in this video.. (RIP Alan Holdsworth.. and sadly, Taylor Hawkins today also.. 😔)...💔
Yet another example of what makes Dr. Bruford my favorite drummer of any genre. There are so many aspects of his playing that set him apart from the pack. Hes absolutely fearlessly, as only the true greats can be. Hes played and succeeded with the best musicians in the world. Amazing!
I've always felt so inspired by Bruford's hi-hat selection throughout the years. They always sound so crisp and articulate even though these look to be 15s. I favor 13s for the best of those properties and their aggressive and quick bite; even in an environment where the societal consensus is that bigger equals better. But perhaps it's good to not follow the trend but instead move in the opposite direction. Thank you Dr. Bruford, for the mark you've left on my life with your music, and the mark you've left on my own drumming.
I wonder if you recall, mr B.... I had a copy of this on a VHS tape, with burned-in timecode, from a mate at the BBC. we'd both watched it when it was first broadcast, & so when he found it in the BBC library where he was working, he made a couple of copies. about a week after acquiring mine, sometime in 1999 iirc, a colleague suggested a trip to the monarch in camden, around the corner from where we worked (at Mtv) to see some band or other. quick pint & then off home, I thought, but when we arrived, I saw you sat there on yr own, & strolled right up, volunteering that I'd just been watching this on VHS. startled? well, I would've been. you gave me your business card, which I faxed to my mate at the BBC the next day (without any additional explanation, initially!) & you & he entered into a brief correspondence. I have no idea if that led to this gig's eventual release, but I like to think we got things started.
Bruford is my favorite drummer ever and it's not even close. I especially love his playing with Chris Squire on "Fish Out of Water". The tightness of their playing has never been equalled.
I love it! And while we're watching the mighty Mr B on drums, let's just casually sneak in... ooh, er, I dunno... Allan Holdsworth on guitar, shall we? 😁
Thanks for posting this. Wonderful. I had the vinyl and now cd. I loved the collaboration with the musicians and the vocal that Annette Peacock brought to the music. Over 40 years of enjoyment.
Mr. Bruford, you are the GOAT! Listened to you with Yes in the 70s all the time (my favorite iteration of my favorite band) and had the King Crimson Discipline album, which was also brilliant. Many thanks to you for enriching my life, sir! Btw, my favorite song is Starship Trooper, and my favorite parts of the song are the “speak to me of summer” sections, where your polyrhythms are mind-blowing.
So at 3:02 Holdsworth finishes another amazing legato solo and then the brilliant syncopation between keys and bass. Amazing stuff. Is there anyone playing to this standard and musicality now?
Bill Bruford + Allan Holdsworth + Jeff Berlin + Dave Stewart = a band of truly extraordinary gentlemen
Allan Holdsworth was such a great, underrated guitarist...RIP.

@@EastmanD I just meant that he's underrated in the context that he isn't a household name. He blows away a lot of guitarists that are!
Not to me.🤭
@@shedjammer87 👍he's really good

Dave Stewart is never talked enough in keyboard circles. The guy is amazing. His 70s output is nearly unmatched.

and later when on to form the Eurythmics !

@@odaydrums That's a very different Dave Stewart, he gets it all the time so don't worry lol
What the hell was I thinking about in 1979 to miss such a great ensemble?!
Bill, I saw you in New Jersey where I grew up in 1979....in a small club, cost me 5 bux to get in......one of the best live shows I have ever seen
Bill, the talent that you surrounded yourself with throughout your musical career is just astounding. I have been, and will continue to be a lifelong fan of your music.

me too
I love you guys. Bill Bruford's talent forever
I’ve got rock goes to college on vinyl, signed by Mr Bruford himself!
Lucky man!...id love that
Best snare sound ever
Those roto-toms too, and that sizzle ride. Love all of it
A Supraphonic that's been cranked up! With all the right kinds of ring.
My band used to use the same rehearsal studio. we used to stand outside and listen in wonder. What a band, and such nice people.
What a killer band - all those cats are smokin'! RIP A.H.......
So much good stuff going on here, even today's musicians don't understand!⭐🥁🎶🎵👊🕶️
Dave Stewart........just amazing.
R.I.P. Allen. Thanks.
I was fortunate enough to see these guys live back in 79 in a relatively small venue in Texas.
Palladium.....?

Probably the greatest group of outstanding masters full stop.
I think only Mahavishnu Orchestra can rival Bruford's group.
Best sweet spot of Canterbury jazz fusion roots

I miss not having to watch and listen to a concert through a wall of cellphones.
That snare !!
Exactly!
Bruford, the reason why I love music and why I choose to be a bass player!

Brilliant
I've carried this album around with me since 1980. Feels Good to Me is a truly classic album.
Just a brilliant piece of complexity to highlight the tremendous talents possessed by Dave, Jeff, Allan and Bill. Awesome!
Super Band
Thank god for these recordings. I believe these are the only video of this amazing ensemble.
I've listened to this CD so many times, it's worn out. WOW Jeff Berlin slapping !!!! Seeing Alan and this stage filled with legends.
Dr. Bruford, your RUclips channel rocks!

These guys were all the top musicians of this genre at the time. I have seen them all together and with different bands. A great clip from the past.
Mr. Bruford picked Jeff Berlin fresh out of Juilliard School in 1977.
😳
So fortunate to have been able to see this band on that tour.
Great band! Mr BB you are a force to behold.
The Best drummer all over the world!!!!!
Those rototoms sound so rad. Amazing band and performance!
It's a really cool sound. I can understand trying to do that even today. Terry Bozzio was doing it too.
pure gold mr Bill
So astonishingly good! I never get tired of this.
I truly admire your restraint as a drummer. Love you.
The greatest supergroup ever IMO. Absolutely sick musicians!
wow - this is fantastic footage! Phenomenal that owe get to see this for free on RUclips - thank you Bill.

Thank you, Bill!!
So good
I BOUGHT THIS DVD WHEN IT BECAME AVAILABLE....
Very entertaining... and very humbling to witness such incredible work!
Uhuuuuuu....bruford the BEST
👍What an amazing band!👍
This band U.K./Bruford and Return to Forever = both set the bar to another level. Think about the Phenomenal musicians in those 2 bands.
I get what you mean, but UK and Bruford were different bands set up to do and be different things.. :-)
Always loved the sound of Allan Holdsworth's playing.
Bill I love You
Applause!!!!!
My favorite live show with this band!
Great video! I have seen you with Crimson and during the Upper Extremities tour. Always a treat

Rock Goes To College is such a dork name😆😎
Clearly it was Jeff's bell bottom pants that made the show! Love this group, totally inspired me to take up bass guitar.
Legendary musicians with that so cool sound. What are you thinking Bill while doing that?
Jeff Berlin is just %100 pure technical skill
This is jazz. Pretty fuqn amazing jazz.
Back when music was musical.
GREAT TALENT DRUMMER BILL BRUFORD 👋😎🔥🌈☀️🌠
I think there's (video of) one of the songs with Annette Peacock if I'm not mistaken?
Dave Stewart is credited with "reasonably advanced harmonic advice". Yep.
I WAS 17 WHEN THIS TSUNAMI HIT.......HATFIELDS,NH,GONG, EGG,CRIMSON AND SLADE!
Bill is a genius
Interesting 2 hear his snare tuned hi and timber exactly like round about
'' TRUE BADD ASS '' ...will there ever be another alan holdsworth .... ??? .. I DON'T KNOW ''
Bill did you ever consider auditioning for frank zappas group?
I like the sound. I love seeing Bill sweat. You KNOW it's hot.
Jaco Pastorius and Bill Bruford collaboration would've been badass just Imagine.
So at 3:02 Holdsworth finishes another amazing legato solo and then the brilliant syncopation between keys and bass. Amazing stuff. Is there anyone playing to this standard and musicality now?
Is he playing the Ludwig maple snare here? Does anyone know? Love that poppy crack!
No. Is a Supersensitive 14"x6.5". The same that we played before in King Crimson, Chris Squire, Genesis, Gong, etc. In YES was a Supraphonic 14"x5"🙂
@@luisdesirat thanks!
The real star of this video? Jeff's pants.
🥰
i could put that Bruford snare sound on 2 pieces of Warburtons bread and eat it.

Yow! This is The Tapes!!!
This is so superior to what passes for prog jazz now its almost painful.
That must be a different Dave Stewart on keyboards. Not Tourists, Eurythmics, and producer of Tom Petty and others.....?
