  • Night and day comparison of a medieval city in lockdown. In 1578 Norwich experienced a catastrophic outbreak of the bubonic plague. Many of the subsequent victims were buried in the churchyard down Tombland Alley. The entire household of Augustine Steward House fell victim to the disease. The house was boarded up and marked with a Red Cross on the door. Four weeks after the house was boarded up the grave diggers came to collect the bodies and to their shock they discovered a young girl to be in the house. She was previously unknown to be there and thought to be one of the family’s daughters. Presumably scared, it is thought she hid herself away when the house was boarded up one month previously. Sadly, she too had not survived. This young girl starved to death, although not before attempting cannibalism on her parent’s decomposing bodies first. To avoid starvation it is reported she attempted to eat their remains and bite marks were found on their carcasses. She reputedly still haunts the house and her spirit has also been spotted at St George’s Church and the Edith Cavell pub which backs onto the front churchyard. Behind this house and into Tombland Alley there is a raised bed of lavender on both borders of the path. There was previously a large lavender patch planted here in attempts to disguise the smell of the decomposing bodies which were mass buried beneath. The raised ground either side of the path mark the site of two pits, which are said to hold up to a thousand skeletons from the devastating plague outbreak in 1578. Mass buried in attempts to stop the spread it was reported there were nearly 5,000 Norwich victims from this particular outbreak. Due to a lack of space, following outbreaks of the plague, Tombland Alley became piled high with bodies. Norwich’s dead were traditionally always buried within the grounds of medieval churches, such as the back churchyard of St George. See rare footage inside this ancient church aswell as the history of Erpingham Gate, leading to Norwich Cathedral.

Brilliant video, I knew the plague pits were round that area somewhere wasn’t exhactly sure where. Now I know. Blimey can’t imagine the lavender hid the smell very much back then.

Excellent, though the music is distracting. I turned off the volume. Better with a gentle commentary.
