  • On Monday 27th April 1942, St Benedict’s and St Bartholomew were the first two medieval churches in Norwich to be destroyed by the blitz bombings. Three more followed in the months after, two of which there is now no trace left of the churches at all. Located within the old city walls and just off St Benedict’s Street, lay the remains of St Benedict’s Church which is a grade 1 listed ruin. Dating back to the 11th century this medieval church was largely destroyed along with the entire parish as the German Luftwaffe carpet bombed the entire area, leaving just the tower behind. St Bartholomew’s church in Heigham was also targeted leaving just the surviving tower, as the Baedeker bombing raids rocked the west of the city. This fateful night in April accounted for almost half of the 340 citizens killed in Norwich during the World War 2 bombings. Back in the late 19th century local folklore told of paranormal activity happening in and around the grounds of St Bartholomew’s Church . This shape shifting phenomenon was reputedly said to appear as a tall spectral figure but at other times transform into a much darker manifestation of half man half beast. Heigham Street was once known as Hangman’s Lane. It was rumoured this spiritual being could have been a criminal from medieval times who was hung in chains for wrongdoings and came back to haunt the area.
