  • The CyRide Safety Committee has a long tradition of evaluating collisions for preventability. In 1986 the committee consisted of two full time drivers, two part time drivers, and a dispatcher. Their decision determines the Safe Driver Awards, and does not affect any disciplinary action. Management makes those decisions independent of the Safety Committee. In general, the committee was tougher on drivers than management.
This video shows some of the thoroughness and thoughtful decision making in evaluation collisions. The original video was 36 minutes for the two collisions that were judged, but has been edited down to about seven minutes. There is some tape degradation in the conversion and the audio is inconsistent.
In this video Joan Harpham is the dispatcher. She was hired in August, 1983, promoted to dispatcher in August, 1985 and worked to April, 1988. She was always a pleasure to work with and always remained calm in the many stressful situations that dispatchers must solve.
Dayle Downer was one of the first drivers that CyRide hired in the expansion of service. He started in June, 1981 and worked until March, 1998. He was very thoughtful and frequently offered constructive ideas to improve CyRide in the early growth years and through out his career.
Bill Thies started in January, 1982 and worked until May, 1999. He had firm opinions on how CyRide operated and was always straightforward in expressing his ideas. Like Dayle, he was dedicated to improving CyRide.
Carole was a part time driver who worked from September, 1984 to August 1988 while she was a student at ISU. She is also in one of the "last trip" videos.
Steve was also a part time driver and ISU student. He worked from DATE to DATE. Like so many drivers in those early years, he was actively involved in the success of CyRide and had a strong analytical mind to approach problems
