It was such an honor to be chosen to be a “mentor ” at this paint-off at LightBox. Hundreds of artists showed up for this experience and it was a extremely fun! Working with James and Jeanette was a treat…such nice people.
Glad you were among the orange-capped mentors, Gary. I kept running into your students, who were happily engaged in sketching.
Thank you James, it was so much fun. I’m in this video actually a bystander, but what a great time.
James, you have zero clue who I am. at the moment of typing this, I haven't even subscribed yet (once I'm done I will). A friend of mine loved your work and we would watch your videos in his living room and some days go out into the city of Detroit to observe and draw the world in front of us. My friend passed away last August. Your videos, their simplicity, and your thought processes explained, bring me back to the simple times when my friend and I would draw together. He was much more talented than I am, but there is a peace and a calm about art that I love and that he taught me, much of which I find in your work. I come back to your videos to be reminded of that.
Thank you, James.
I think your friend would love you to continue making art like you used to together.❤
It is crazy to me that I knew what you were going to paint before you posted the video simply because I saw a photo of you shaking the hands of my animation professor with this painting in the background! Glad to see up close in higher quality and not zooming into a pixelated blur.
It was great being present. Thanks to you and your wife for beiny so kind to me and my friends
I know it was a fun, silly exercise, but this is my favorite painting I’ve seen you do and I’ve been following you for years. Great to see new things work out so well! Thanks James!
Thank you so much! A change of pace for sure.
I'm a college student, and I read Dinotopia: Sky Dance when I was a kid. I just went on a late night rabbit hole to your channel and I am absolutely stoked to see that it's active! Your art instills a sense of nostalgia and wonder that I don't really see anywhere else. Someday when I save enough money, I hope to get a signed copy of your book for my family in the future :)
The event looked like a really fun time! As a person closer to James age, I am quite impressed with his knowledge of video game and manga characters!
Every video is such a treat! Love the variety, love the delivery, and especially love the art!
What a great idea!! can't wait to do that!! urgh!! so many options!!
Drawing and painting is like a video game. It's like a visual game on a flat two dimensional surface.
Watching you work your way through the process, as well as your sense of humor as you added the the "Instagram" junkies and the patrol car to the painting , shows your brilliance as an artist.
Twas an honor meeting you at Lightbox!! Fantastic work sir!
I am so so happy to have been there and painted with you all that day! It was a dream come true to meet you and Jeanette! You were both amazing and kind! Thank you so much for everything!!!
I love the fact that James knows his Demon Slayer characters.
Awesome. I love this kind of thing
Amazing work everyone!
Love this!
I love your painting, and that event looks like an absolute blast!
Thanks for the “recommended reading” section at the end of “Color and Light”
I had so much fun! Thank you autographing my VHS copy of Fire & Ice. I was so star struck being able to see you draw and paint in person. Cheers!
Yoo thats me at 0:23 thanks james for being such an inspiration and for hosting this session!
1:18 I bet he goes for Super Mario.
Alas, that the character I designed - Rad Gravity - never achieved that iconic level of recognition. But I’ve been there at that building in Pasadena many a time, and never had the time to draw it. Always great to watch your videos!
Superfun! :D
Loved it
was waiting for him to name Giyu Tomioka and he did!
Extremely cool James! Thank you for this!
Those thumbnail sketches are quite accurate. Your efficiency at this is quite amazing.
How nice the atmosphere there with these artists giving their best
James, this video brought a song to my heart to see so many enjoy the art, architecture, culture, etc., and be provided the opportunity to learn among those who had less technology to rely on. We can always count on Mario to bring people together and I appreciate your knowledge and respect for his origins. Fantastic vid, thank you!
This must have been awesome. I had followed you on the facebook group. Thanks for sharing.
Wow that event looks awesome!! Hopefully I can get to it sometime in the future. Sounds like everyone has had a fantastic time with painting! Adding some interesting characters to realistic places sounds like a fun challenge. Thanks for sharing this wonderful video.
Made my day!
Now that is ART
Love it.. and I love your videos
Awesome ❤
It's a-perfect. WAHOO!
Whoever's at 0:48 - I love those colors!

You manage to make everything look good ❤
So creative! I loved this!!
So cool great video! 😊
Great as always bud thanks for sharing 😊😊
Sad to have missed lightbox this year, but I'll have to make it next year just to see you having fun like this!!
Just another day in Pasadena😂
Wow 😯 I gotta get old soon 🤣😂🤣😂
That’s Pawnee City hall!
❤
Great video, as always. I wish I could have been there. Maybe some day...
By the way, I have recognized the building. It is not Pasadena, It is Pawne! 😂
i was there for some of this
Gratuluję wyobraźni!
🙏🌊🔱🌪🌪🌪
I love the video bit… why is mario‘s color so… well, off?
Good eye. There's a reason: Mario used to have red overalls and a blue shirt. The design was used in super Mario bros 1 and 2 but in 3 they changed it so he has blue overalls and a red shirt and it’s remained that ever since. I based my painting on a Nintendo-licensed figurine with the older color scheme.
Let's talk about Sonic's colours then! What's with the neon colours!?
Is there a reason the buildings are leaning towards the subject?
Yeah, kind of pushing the worm's eye view with three point perspective.
@JamesGurney Thank you for answering! I knew there was a reason, and it makes sense to show how big Mario is from as low as possible. This video reminds me of the painting you made with a colossal Mario walking through a landscape.
How does this have 3x the amount of likes than views
First
hope nintendo doesn't go after you
I’m so excited to watch this later tonight 🫶🏻 I’m playing fortnite right now
