There's been a lot of discussion about my contribution to this collab, and discussion or disagreement is fine. In fact it drives views and engagement, which is why it triggered in a lot of the anonymous 'bot accounts to chime in.
But to those who sincerely feel I disrespected Jess's work or was out of line with what I added, I'm afraid you're mistaken. I loved the motif of the upstretched hands, which is why I tried to spotlight and accentuate them. I wrote to Jess asking if she was OK with what I did, and she replied that she is not at all offended. On the contrary she said she's excited the direction it's taking. And TenHundred's original marching orders in his cover letter were to feel free to overpaint, modify, or change it, and that he wished for a "cohesive composition."
It's just paint, folks-or really just pixels-a sketching game, a chance to learn, a bit of visual fun, and we're all friends....in fact I sent Jess the Wanted Poster and she's got it framed.
Any artist that truly wants to grow would be HONORED to have a legend modify/enhance their work.
I think that you did a wonderful job and the way that you show your art is kind of awesome but it's amazing and I just want you to know that I don't want you feel disappointed I know some people feel that you kind of messed up her art but I think to me I think you did great
I totally agree that there's a lack of cohesion in this project. There was little of that in the previous collab, nor is there in the other currently running project. Everybody seems to want to do their own signature thing and not really consider the whole of the canvas. But onwards to see what Aaron decided to do with this painting, I can't wait.
@@fussynotions I don’t for a second think James was referring to negative comments about his work. He is referring to the ‘hey, I contacted *insert fake investment banker* and made $1 million in my first month’ type of comments. I’m sure they are being deleted as soon as they are spotted.

Jess: As an older female and fan, my (unsolicited) life advice is to always stand up for your work and for yourself. There's a horrible dynamic at play here...you're being taken advantage of and it's disheartening to watch.

@@jennifercase3666 it’s incredibly common within traditional art collaborations for the artists to cover each other’s work; not doing so is really a very new concept, and often made in poor choice. When writing books together with another writer, you wouldn’t leave every part each person wrote in, that’d be a horrible, confusing, and difficult to read book. Whole sections end up on the editing room floor.
We’re being granted an incredibly rare and unique perspective in to the actual journey, process, and evolution of an art piece and how it works, including parts we may not like that we’d normally never see. You should consider watching with joy and excitement to see how it turns out, instead of demanding stagnation. And if all else fails, remember: if you were never witness to the process and only got to see the end result, you’d most likely adore the final piece. So please, kindly stop being offended on another’s behalf, especially after that person has clearly stated they are not offended. If they are but say they aren’t, that’s for them to resolve still, and it’s not your business. Take Jess at face value, and listen to HER; telling her how to feel is as bad as that ideology which you seek to oppress.

Not gonna lie, I was expecting dinosaurs from James Gurney. Because everyone is putting their “signature” characters in there. But Reddy Kilowatt is a much better choice, more fitting of the pop art theme, but from the 60s which is still a very James Gurney thing to do.
You are right about balancing the colors. I also expected you would do that to balance the overall colors and complement Greg Simkins’s grayed out rabbit. Your color choices made the whole painting a lot better.
The caliber of artists on this collab is already over the moon, but you blew my mind on the next collaborator! Another living legend! I’m expecting lion king or simba, but I’m sure whatever the result would be mind blowing too.
Seeing you two spitballing ideas and narratives off eachother was so interesting. I really like all the other artists but I agree, with too much free reign it does risk just becoming a noisy collage of detailed characters with little cohesion. It was fascinating seeing you bring a completely new and fresh strategy when adding to the piece. Having watched videos from all the other participants I honestly think they will value your ideas and artistic input.
It's disappointing that thoughtful art critique is now seen as "throwing shade or being disrespectful " critiquing art is what people have done since art has been created. I never once in the entire video felt that anything said was rude or discounted the talent of the other artists involved. It was simply a critique and opinion of the piece itself which is meant to be multiple artists adding and overlapping each other.
In addition, I think season three would be cool to have an overarching theme to assist in the composition so it would have a cohesive flow. Things to think about for the future. 🤔
I can critique someone’s work, sure, specially a man with his recognition and trajectory, but critiquing and acting on said critique by obliterating part of another artist’s work are different things. 🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️ every artist in all 3 collabs have understood that “overlapping” over other artists’ work is so as to give your own art an “in”, not to “fix” someone else’s work, it’s a collab among artists, not artists and their editor. It was an act of hubris. He knew he had to leave space for two more artists and took over the entire left side (I do like his character; just way too big) and decided to erase another artist’s work due to his ego regarding what he thinks is rightful composition given his own (and his wife’s?) conception, and screw anyone else’s.
@Pumpkin Queen but her art is not obliterated. The hands are still extremely prominent, literally framing the other characters and the woman in the upper corner is also drawing your eye. The best part of art is discussing it together and opening your mind to other opinions. I hear your opinion and at first, watching the video I was a bit taken aback too when he added to it there. So I went back and looked at the piece before and after each artist to really look at the changes made. I think that when you look at them back to back Jess's art is still a large portion of the overall piece. I hope you can also hear my thoughts and have an open mind. I think this piece is going to be a very interesting mix of new and old styles when it's all said and done. Who knows how the next person will overlap or change it. 🙂
@@marebear1807 they’ll have to crazy overlap since there’s no space left. The issue is if anyone watched Jess’s video it was quite the profound process, everything was thought out (whether one likes it or not is another story; I personally like Tenhun and Kiptoe’s additions the best for my liking, not so much hers, but I wholeheartedly appreciate her work). But knowing the artist’s process I would think it deserved more respect. I’m not an artist so perhaps I’m spewing nonsense, I’m an attorney, and if I was looking over a colleague’s brief and saw the thought and research put into it, even if I thought it was wrong, I wouldn’t just delete pages, I’d critique it, for sure, but I wouldn’t just hit delete🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️
@Pumpkin Queen I love hearing more of your opinion!! I think it's a fair critique. 🤔 I think Jess's video was lovely and her process was wonderful to watch. In the overall spirit of the collab, even in season one, artists were constantly making changes to others' additions. Each artist also used a different amount of space. The best part is that it's all for a good cause and meant to be constantly altered and changed and open our view to artists that maybe people didn't follow or know about.
I am sure the artists involved will make suggestions for the next season and also read comments from videos and possibly also take some of these concerns/critiques and alter the rules.
Thank you for having this chat, so much can be lost with just text and no body language or vocal inflection. People can immediately jump to anger and I truly do love hearing and understanding others' observations. We all grow each time. 🙂

I love how the filming/editing is like an old educational tv show, its so nostalgic lol... i also like how the critique was honest, the painting was feeling one dimensional and too busy... but you added so much depth
Some of the most famous art pieces had the most controversy!
1. Ten Hundred CLEARLY STATED that people are allowed to modify this painting as they wish. So that overall clears everything that happened in this video. Like it or not.
2. Jess commented and expressed her calmness about it all. She’s a grown woman who doesn’t need you guys to defend her. And even if she didn’t like it, like stated before Ten Hundred approved modifications.
This was a great video explaining on how the direction of this painting could go to help enhance it by having balance. I think every artist took on this project knowing the assignment. And just because the other artist decided to not modify anybody else’s piece it doesn’t mean that he was wrong in doing so. Because like I stated earlier Ten Hundred HIMSELF gave free reign for artist to do whatever they wanted.
I’m glad that you broke the mold, this art piece was never meant to be kept within guidelines of a box, it was supposed to be a collaboration of free expression. and I’m excited to see the direction that this art piece can go now that the walls have been taken down!!

I don't have a problem with the modifications, and for the most part, I love what James did. I will say that while the rest of the painting is complex, and I loved that his upper left art was a nice counter balance, I feel that he went to far with the simple 'smoke' in the hands; to me, it felt disconnected. I think some modification to the complex fire in the hands with light smoke would have been great to calm it down and then carry that up with the highlight he mentioned near 10 hun's piece. But, I personally thought it was too simple in that area now, and the juxtaposition didn't give my eyes a place to rest, but instead was almost more jarring in the abrupt change.
People here in the comments are screaming no sense about the painting. The work of Jess is still visible, the painting now has more cohesive sense..and James are literally given us a master class of different artis concepts, culture etc ... for God sake, have patience, learn through the process, open your mind to the information .
This is my favorite segment of the collab so far. I loved that you guys actually talked about how the whole thing was becoming too jumbled and tried to help it be cohesive. I also LOVE your use of props and editing in art during the video. Very excited to subscribe.
Yes! I feel that all the other artists worked from a self serving place, just adding things they wanted to paint. That is in no way a bad thing, as i think at first we just needed subject on canvas. Now that its half way through its a good time to step back and consider the piece as a whole. Hes analysing the piece through a technical lense and trying to solve the issues it presents. That's exciting to me as an artist, and should be celebrated because essentially that's what artists do, discover and solve technical problems, or conceptual ideas, or nagging questions, or visual interpretations.
I don't think I'm the only one who hoped you would add a dinosaur or two, but this is so interesting! You're educating us about both the past and the future of art.

Everyone painted over each other’s painting, just watch their videos on it. Overpainting is part of the spirit of this collab. It does not detract, but rather adds to the painting’s overall story.
Ten hundred (the first artist) himself said that he’d wish the next artists would paint over his work because he accidentally painted his astronaut fox bigger than he intended and he took too much space.
Kiptoe helped set the tone of painting over others, and Jess Karp followed suit, so did Greg Simkins. Greg even painted over ten hundred’s bottle and filled it with smoke. Everyone painted over everyone.
Each artist’s work has their own story, like Jess Karp’s giant hands with fluttering birds evolving into the mystical woman. Although succeeding artists painted over previous artists, they did not take away from the story but rather changed and added onto it. That’s how collaborations are supposed to be.
The original story, before overpainting, is not wasted. This is an art youtuber collab and each youtuber’s video on their work is an integral part of this painting. Their original story is preserved there in their videos, and the updated collab story is shown on the current painting’s facade.

@@paputz72 I don’t think he destroyed Jessica’s art at all. And in all fairness, she worked in two areas so I feel that what he did was completely reasonable. He didn’t alter her main focus piece. I was nervous when he wanted to add ring light to tenhundreds character though being a central focus. I love his dinosaurs but I was not impressed with this piece. I wonder how much of this was to honor his collector friend or something versus creating his own work. Also I could have done without the consistent complaining about the piece being so busy. It’s a collab for charity showcasing different artists and was never intended to be a perfect masterpiece.

I love her art!! I was very surprised how much space she took up and felt bad for the future collaborators with less space . What she created was gorgeous….I personally wouldn’t take up so much space . She is bold :)

Now this is how art should be discussed! They are spot on in seeing that it's cool what the other artists have done, yet it's so complicated and leaves nowhere for the eyes to rest. It was refreshing to see talent talk through the process of how they were going to make the painting better before they worried about what they were going to put on--they actually saw the painting as a whole and figured out what would work best. Excellent work James and I can't wait to see the finished piece!

Wow, I didn’t know what to expect from this video but Im impressed at how much thought you put into this, your contribution didn’t only added one image to the piece, you stepped back and looked at the entire composition, and even better. You brought expert eyes into mix. Loved your video!
I love that you made it a story about collaboration and design and how it has evolved over the decades. You managed to show us how you interacted with the painting itself with a very old school method of tracing paper and real live smoke bombs. Many today would have just used layers in Photoshop. Then you contrasted talking with real humans vs. Interacting with AI. All with the basic premise of passing art back and forth between contemporary artists and using references from historical artists.
To think you also edited into a really engaging RUclips video with distribution blows my mind. This has so many layers of genius. You are truly creative James Gurney!

I love that you adressed how busy this painting is! It's so much it makes me dizzy. I feel like all the artist competed and not collaborated with each other.
Instead of someone else’s character, I’d have liked to see James’ own original character, something unique to him. I learned a lot by watching and listening to James and the other artist.
I think his idea is he wanted to pay homage to the early beginnings of cartoons and cartoon characters, also doing something that is more simple and less illustrative/more painterly really adds to the composition of this painting. These youtuber artist painting collabs honestly all look pretty bad, I think James took the right approach in thinking of the composition before his own wants.
Dear Mr. James Gurney, I think your addition to this collaboration was amazing. Not only in the painting process but the filming as well. I appreciate you giving us the experience of watching artists give feedback and discuss how to take a piece to the next level all while being passionate and excited about the project. This experience is priceless for us self taught artists & although others may feel negatively about it, there must be people like me that wish to have access to that sort of content. Such helpful comments to keep in mind for my personal projects.
Well done with great insight from a Master. This painting is a story brought forth by all the artist that have and will paint it. A collaboration is just that. Play off off one another’s colors, characters, style and blend, distort, add to or take away. You did amazing and I am excited to see what Aaron does to this.

I was pleased that the painting finally got into the hands of older experienced masters who understood the essence of joint work and smoothed the overall composition. Unlike the previous ones, who presented beautiful works, but rather focused on detail and seemed to be competing with each other. And painting the thumb to the hands added depth to the image.
Thats a pretty faulty understanding of what this type of collab is, its for each artists to fill a space with whatever they want to. They literally pick artists one after the other, anyone who got picked by the end could've said "you know imma unite all this stuff cause i feel like it" furthermore painting over the other artist's work doesnt only miss the mark of what this is about but also highly disrespectful. Its arrogant to see a piece of work that is a literal jigsaw puzzle with each piece giving the spotlight to each of the artist's style of work, as a thing you should fix when it isnt about thinking you know better, this is like a birthday party and one kids wants cake before birthday boy/girl cause "its a celebration for everyone" thinking you can make something better was a thing any other of the artists could of come up with, but they didnt due to sheer *respect* for the collaboration' *point* which is clear once you think they would of gathered to design a whole piece if they actually wanted to.
@@bozmundarts2614 The end goal of this collab is to have one painting is it not? The rules state that Painting over another artist's work is allowed. Yes, the last person has the final say as to what to paint over and what to leave, and they could cover the painting if they wanted to (which would be kinda funny, and would cause a huge drama). All jokes aside, someone would have to address the problems with the painting eventually. The later that would happen, the harder it would be to fix. Among all the artists participating in any of the collaborations, James is actually the most knowledgeable, skilled, and accomplished. He's a pro illustrator - composition, and readability are very important for him, so he tried to address it. Sacrificing a few details to improve readability is not that big of a deal. And yes, I think that an artist's contribution to the piece can be "fixed" or even erased from the painting if it benefits the end result. That is if the goal is to have a cohesive final painting and not just a collection of unrelated doodles by art RUclipsrs.
The problem is that in these collabs nobody thinks about the composition and in the end, none of them works as a painting. Everyone goes big for the center of the painting, and the in the end people are left with scraps at the edges. The end result always looks like a bad collage and not a good painting at all.
It would be nice if one artist provided linework in their style;e for another one to color it in their style, and another one to provide background in their style, etc... Or another process in which the work of the next artist is built on the foundation provided by the previous one, and not around it as it is at the moment.
@@bartwitiak the point is have fun, make a mess, that's what these collabs are. If you want a full composition just made by multiple people... suggest it... from the start! Plan it... from the start! Otherwise, dont call out the lack of compositional cohesion in this work when its your turn to have your fun, it makes him look like a douchebag, completely missing the point of this which is to just make every artist's thing stand out in their portion and have fun. Oh its not a amazing masterfully crafted whole piece! Dear god may some artists dare not to try and make a visually pleasing image for everyone! The point of art is to express yourself not measure a creation by rules! And god forbid if some artists just wanna mess around where each puts their own thing, anything they want, just have at it. You know, have fun.
Is that a rule too to make a "painting" of "good taste" forever and always?
@@bozmundarts2614 well, Ten Hun stated in his original video that he wants a cohesive piece of art in the end and that's one of the reasons he allowed people to paint over each other. There is a double standard in your view on what Gurney did. Did he not have fun? Did he not make a mess? I'm pretty sure he did both. Why should the measure of what he did and whether it's a success be your definition of art and fun? Perhaps he should follow his own sense of what art and fun is and act on it, which I think he did. Why are others allowed to do whatever they want, and he is not? Either there are no rules, and therefore he can do whatever he wants, or there are rules, just the ones you made up for yourself. I other words, fun is allowed as long it's your kind of fun within your understanding of what art should be, otherwise it's a failure.
I thoroughly enjoyed this video. You blend your quirky humour with genuinely fascinating subjects, paintings a narration so beautifully. I love the way Mel thinks and his idea was so fitting. Thanks James!
The whole idea here is to create a tapestry of multiple artists. Each artist adds a warp and a weave to the design. No rules; each artist puts down what they feel they want and the tapestry goes on. James added his touch and whether folks like it or not, it was HIS touch. The tapestry takes another turn. Artists playing off what the previous one did has always been a thing. Look at Simpkins completely painting over Jess' bird. It's ALL OK and it adds to the whole.
I can't wait to see Aaron Blaise add to this tapestry of art. The variance in style from the traditional to the urban street is so amazing. Good job everyone!

New sub! It's a collad, not a collage. To anybody saying he took too much space... take a good look. Jess has the bigger piece. Add her two pieces up and it's 1/4 of the canvas. Yes her story was erased, but the color cohesion is better now.
He may sound arrogant throughout the vid, but we as artists know that we are learning every single day. And he and his guest made some good critiques.

I thought the same thing, noone complained that she took 2 separate big spaces or that the rabbit covered some birds too, they just complained here because he drew more attention to it and they dont know how to differentiate between critique and insults
Honestly I felt ten hundred made his space character too big, then Jess added too much with the hands, and female character, and the person who painted the clock made it too big. These two gentlemen were right in saying the piece was too busy and needed to be pulled back a bit to make it a more cohesive art piece.
@@BuklauTheLegend having this collab as well as the past one and being able to compare it to the "smallest art collab" just show us that the subscriber count doesn't matter in a collaboration, most of the big channels are making the same mistakes as the smaller ones by not understanding the difference between a collaboration and a collage, and when someone with more experience in that field comes and do what it is expected and literally stated in the rules everyone goes against him because he did something different.
Almost every artist so far wanted their piece to stand out from the others and include a very different style (including the one who did the frame last season)
@@Pacha_RM I absolutely loved the frame from last season.
To be honest I don't get why everyone is complaining, when I saw that Jess claimed two separate spaces I thought it was unfair at first, but after thinking for more than 2 seconds I realized that it started to make the painting more cohesive and that the other creators would cover parts or her artwork if they needed that space.
In fact this is not the first time that her birds were covered and the last time noone complained, they only complained here because he drew more attention to it, so everyone rushed to the comments instead of realizing that her hands were highlited and her character fitted better with the composition after he was done.
I see it too - his use of colour highlights the face Jess painted and brings it out more.
I think it is funny how the most common reason was that he "ruined" her story, but she added that story without consideration for what already was in the canvas, while beautiful it didn't make sense thematically, so it doesn't diminish anything by transforming it, specially after we know he had verbal consent by her even after the definition of a collab and the rules said it was ok and expected to do so

Art is subjective and fluid, this piece is certainly dynamic. It's extremely busy and chaotic, and absolutely representative of the different artists and the styles they applied. Change to the overall artwork is the nature of the beast when you have so many hands and creative minds involved.
I love each contribution. And while I might not have been comfortable with the choice made to paint over such a large portion of someone else's work, (the effect and dove from the hands that Jess incorporated) it's not up to me or anyone else. Just the artists involved. Because at the end of the day, it's not commissioned, there are no overarching guidelines, and the artists were given pretty much free reign.
It's also not our place to tell someone what they should have added.
Open thoughtful criticism is excellent. It's part of art. Talking crap is not.
I was engaged through the whole video 😅 a bit different to the slick videos of Tenhun and the others, but definitely not a bad thing! LOVE WHAT YOU DID! You'll definitely balanced the piece.
I think the adjustment to Jess's hands was exactly what the painting needed. As they said, it had become too complex, and when you want to bring something together that small section between the hands was really the best opportunity. I love where its going and I cannot wait to see Aaron Blaise's contribution! so exciting!!!
there is a difference between overlapping and just covering someone's hard work for the sake of not being the center of attention. His character is an ugly little toy that has nothing to do with the story and soul of this painting so far and i truly hope whoever is next covers a chunk of it up or fixes it and adds something better to it bc it looks bad.
@@BrianaLynn7 Its ok if his art isn't to your taste. The risk of a collaboration is that you won't enjoy everyone's contribution. However most current successful artists, at some point, have admired and studied James's work for guidance. I can't express this enough, he really doesn't need to sabotage another artist to be the centre of attention. I am curious what you think the story of the painting is? no shade, genuinely curious.
@@PenImp Everyone explained their parts. I’m not an artist but I have eyes and a brain and my opinion matters just as much. Ten hundred made a cool character to build off of. Kiptoe added the dragon around the character continuing the whimsical nature and then Jess brought in those hands to show how those characters came to be. The. next guy took inspiration from the women like the queen of hearts and added the rabbit. The story isn’t exactly perfect but the pierces go together and look nice. His is boring and not even remotely tied in. He made the beautiful glow of the hands into a dull boring hands with awkward thumbs

I LOVE that this collab has jumped generations. Everyone has something to teach, and I think this whole idea is really spectacular. We need to communicate in physical ways these days, discuss and express ourselves. I'm sad about the small bird, but hey, if Jess is okay with it, let's go! Can't wait to see the next installment!
I’m a 28 year old female draft’s person in the construction industry in NY. And like every industry there’s always a gap between how things use to be done and how they will be or are done now with all the new tools and technology that didn’t exist before. Young engineers and architects are Coming up with new concepts that are meant to improve the way it was done before, much of it works and is innovative but as a draftsperson I’ve noticed that there’s always a flaw in design/functionality of a system. The young always complicate the simple or simplify the complex to where sometimes functionality or technicality in how something is meant to work or be built is lost. every industry experiences this gap between the older generation and new and this reminded me of it. Not In a bad way but in way that made me happy. To see you have to get creative while sharing your wisdom in this craft. Even sharing what you thought about AI. The other artist were great and i love what they’ve done but it was so creative to see how your style and art was incorporated and what a nice addition it was. The effort in collaboration in ideas makes me happy. Thank you 🙏🏽

Great observation on the content limitations of Dall-E. We pretend that the algorithm is pure, unbiased image generation. But there is bias deliberately program into the tool by the creators. We need to accept that art contains themes of darker concepts just as much (if not more) than lighter ones. And we are constantly changing the definition of what is acceptable. Nudity has been a prime feature of western art. The machine won’t allow someone to imagine that. I think this will create a radicalized movement of artists who will paint and create themes that a machine cannot capture because it lies outside of their logic parameters much as the impressionists and related art schools were a rebellion against the strictures of the academic style. Overall, I think it is a great tool to help whet someone’s speculation without the time cost of generating these images by hand. They remind me of an image from a dream quite realistic but SOMETHING doesn’t match reality.

What I liked about your video is that weren't afraid to make a reasonable criticism of the painting, I liked that you don't need to do something disproportionate with a lot of unnecessary details, I think that when talking about a collaboration everyone can be willing to have their work intervened for better coercion, especially if you decided to take up that much space in the first place like Jess
I look at the comments on this video and the comments on the video of the artist who made the bunny and realize that the person who made the following comment on Jess's video was right "Jess did a good job but took up a lot of space from others artists, and now anyone who paints over their painting will be criticized like a disrespectful person”

I'm not sure how I feel about Mel's comments on the other artists but I'm glad it sorta worked out in the end. It also goes to show that art is subjective and while that generation is stuck in it's ways, art evolves with time

Why? She took so much space on the canvas. I actually feel bad for the other artists that will have to modify/squeeze their own work in. What James did was amazing, her work is still there and the hands are very much the power of the artists imagination. The birds were just the eggs that made a beautiful omlette.

Jess Karp's addition was my favorite in this series, and so when I read the comments saying her part or story was covered up, I was scared, but when I saw the final result, I don't see what the fuss was about. Her story was about hands overflowing with creativity, and it's still there. Yes, we lost the wisps and the bird (sad to see the birds go), but the hands are still glowing and flowing with creativity.
I guess no one really remembers Greg also covered up a bird or two? Maybe because he didn't mention it.
yeah I was kind of sad that he didn't re-paint the bird, but I think it still looks good. it sounded like he gave it a lot of thought to truly improve the compsition and the whole piece.
If I painted Jess Karp's part, all the hours spent on those hands, with all the whispy drip and smoke detail and the birds, for it to be covered with what looks like some 5 year old finger blasted every pastelle colour in his posession over it, I'd be pissed. I understand a little blending into anothers work may be needed or a bit of a cut across, but to fully paint over 40-50% of someone's work which was 10x better than what covered it... Diabolical... This painting had the potential to sell for way more than the 1st painting, now, I think not with that burning reminder. That would have made me retract any thoughts of placing a bid.

Gurney has absolutely improved the cohesiveness of the piece, if you can't see that then you are either purposefully blinding yourself or never learnt to see through an artistic lens in the first place.

I would love to see someone just not be afraid to paint over the other artists. Im a big fan of Basquiat and Warhol and some interviews/docus show how when they collabed they would just constantly paint over each other. Shows you how fragile an idea you thought of really is when it could be destroyed or reinterpreted entirely and potentially end up as something better than before. With this challenge it’s interesting but also frustrating how every artist knows the rules when they start yet they deliberately try to paint around each other instead of taking risks.
Agreed. It always works better if you're acquainted with the other artists and how they feel about heavy reworking. Also, I think it's always best to start a collaboration like this with a specific theme or direction rather then throwing it open to "whatever you want to add."
Artists who came up in the graffiti world are sensitive to paint overs as it was/is a sign of disrespect It’s also interesting to see and hear the comments wrt theme or not , which I would attribute to how the artist came up and their age/experience. Perhaps the older guys just throw caution to the wind collar and the ‘younger’ ones do a themed one. Either way , we listen and learn from each interaction and how each artists background drives them to think about their contributions. Imho

I would say that asking for permission would be the best way to go about it. Most probably it would be given but it's a courtesy.
Taking risks doesnt mean destroying the storyline and the beauty others tried to contribute with their art. Im in shock! He was asked to collab not to edit and criticise others work.

I love the fact that he including the creative process being born as they brain storm the ideas before coming to the conclusion of what the final product would be. I wasn't expecting to see that included because most youtube artists just start it of with "so I had this idea" and, boom, there it is. This was a good representation of what goes into birthing these ideas, instead of making it seem like it just presented itself to the artist fully fleshed out. I always wonder how the artist finally decides, out of the infinite possibilities they have to choose from, what they're creation will be. It truly is a birthing process

Of people complained, they missed the entire mark of what it means to be an artist. We often bounce ideas off of fellow friends who are artist in their own right.
I’m thankful for the history and knowledge that was shared by our elders. Problem is, many younger generations think they know the answers to it all, and they yet to have a clue. Those who have traveled the path before us have purpose and lessons to give. All we have to do is listen.
The challenge was an elder wanting to bridge the gap and understand the younger; something the young need to work on. He took the time to seek, learn and build as one. Something I’m appreciative of because it wasn’t giving up hope when we often give up on ourselves. It was saying, “I see you, I hear you, let’s cohesively work together and build even better than what one mind can see.”
Blessings and respect, teach. I heard you throughout; even the parts you did not record but was given by your spirit. ❤️

James is a legend and has inspired many younger artist. He is an artist who knows his stuff. If you go back to the first collab you can see jazza approach it the same way, bring unity to the piece.
For james to use verbiage like” fix it “and “save the painting”, doesn’t take away from the other artist but rather highlights James experience and knowledge on the fundamentals of art. Art is subjective but there is no denying the basics which are a foundation for any artist.
I'm less than halfway through this video, but I love listening to masters at work talking about painting, composition, lighting and story. So unexpected, but amazing. Edit: Finished the video...it's going to Aaron Blaise! Amazing! Lions, Tigers and Bears, oh my and so much more to come ;)

Its interesting to watch this painting evolve as it passes through so many different artists. Each one is at such a wildly different stage of their artistic career and videography career, so seeing some approach it as a collab and others approach it as an artistic sampling for viewers is very very thought provoking. I love Gurney's art, and I was really hoping for a surrealist addition to the piece (hopefully including a dino), so this was a surprising outcome. I can't say I like it, and watching the swirls and bird above Jess's hands get painted over was hard. But everyone this season has painted over everyone else, and the folks in the video were right, the composition needed help to tone down the overwhelming nature of the piece.
Oh my gosh, this is what I needed! Really enjoyed your addition to this collaboration, also loved your insight and your thoughts on collaboration with other artists generally and AI in particular. It makes me think of your old traveling artist tapes that you’ve featured on this channel before. I appreciate how you are always finding new ways to create art in community with other people- it’s not often mentioned as part of the standard artists tool kit, but community is an invaluable thing.
When I saw you painting over Jess's work I gasped. And then paused. I think we're always so precious about art but its ever-evolving and up to interpretation. Her contribution will always live on in the previous videos, and it has evolved in your hands. You so diligently discussed the composition and put careful consideration to what your contribution and changes are. Stunning work James!

I like the challenge that you all have to accomplish of adding to the piece your own bit and changing the overall look to go together. I think it’s fun to watch, but I’d be so nervous about messing it up!
As for AI “art” uh no, not a fan. Without the human element AI art could not exist. All of its elements are stolen from others’ work. Scouring archives and the internet for images taken or created by humans to combine together is delving too far into copyright and trademark infringement, and taking away the actual artist’s rights. It could also find personal photos not intended for public use, it already snatches images from actors and models. I agree with your concerns of it hindering the artist’s imagination to come up with these things on their own as well as the freaky stuff it could generate. The latter could be fixed somewhat, if the programmers compensate for certain phrases or to not make explicit content. At least with Photoshop the person chooses elements and has to have some skills and do some work to accomplish the finished piece. AI “art” that generates like this is the ultimate cheat on so many levels. Like NFTs I’ll be glad when the trend fades into virtual obscurity. I’m a fan of your art, not the AI stuff.

James Gurney is the GOAT! So cool :) There's always so much value in presenting the thought process and conversations between artists that go in to developing an idea. The analog motion graphics in your videos make me wish that I'd thought of that.

This is hilarious. At 14:36 he says "I don't want to tell you what to do" but then at 15:04 he really gets going and describes a sort of apocalyptic vision.
Wonderful video. And I really appreciated your thoughts on generative models at the end there! These tools are just emerging, I think the next few years will be so interesting, with much more control and exploration possible. And from what I'm seeing in the community it won't be controlled by a single company that's for sure :)
