I remember the pure joy of opening cards when I was a kid. Now all I hear is "Wow Larry Bird!! Too bad it's not perfectly centered". It is still exciting, but nowhere near as pure fun as it was before grading came about.
@Darbobski I agree. Now it's all about how much more can I sell it for if it grades well 😞 It's not like it was in the 60's when I bought packs of cards with my allowance
When I was a kid I knew I couldn't afford the three card(Bird, Magic, Dr. J). So the 81 Magic was my holy grail and I finally bought one. Never got it graded, but it has been one of my favorite cards for years.
Love these old classic box rips! Interesting tidbit about the regional versions of these boxes. Also, Topps apparently didn't have photogs outside of the Washington, DC, area. If you look carefully, all the photos of the player cards from 1977-1981 were taken from the old Capital Center, if you look at the players, the Bullets are wearing their home unis in the background.
I ran a printing press for 16 years. I can tell you how easy it is for defects to get through to finished product. Printed on big sheets even a piece of dust making it to one roller to the impression cylinder plate and you’ll have hickies. Easily you can have movements in the process where color dots do not align and you get off colors with cyan magenta yellow or black to be out of centering. And after printing it’s the bindery that makes the cuts on product. It’s easy for miscuts to get off centering. Even with today’s technology defects are plenty and easy to make the way to finished product. Even inks can be contaminated before entering the ink wells to the rollers. Printing is not easy.
😂😂you and my dad would get along. He printed from 1980 until about 6 years ago. He loves pointing out all the little defects on a card and explaining how that happened in the process.

Insane how much those cards went up a few years ago. I got back into collecting about 8 years ago and the Bird PSA 10 was a $900 card and then it went up to 20-40k overnight.
Loved the 81 Basketball cards, lots of great cards in there. Even though the centering on the cards in that box is really good, I am glad I didn't spend $4,000 on that box.
That’s exactly what’s wrong with the industry. A bird and magic only have that value but these new players, the Wembys, ect, Hero, Trae, Chet’s, have 2-3k and above values that haven’t accomplished anything and these 2 legends are the MT Rushmore of players and saved the NBA while MJ transcended it
Totally agree dude. I mean, I like Wemby and it looks like he’ll be a great player. But what if he’s not? What if he gets injured and his career ends??! Then how much will his literally thousands of rookie cards will be worth?? His cards have completely over saturated the market to the point where people are spending $600 on crappy, unlicensed products to chase him and he’s the only card anyone cares about! It’s insane to me 🤷♂️ I just don’t get it
I can understand the hype for Wemby. He's already great. Rk: 24 EPM as a rookie. Finished with highest DPM out of any rookie past 10 years - at least - Otherwise, I get it. On the other hand, someone like Brandon Miller still has much to prove. Even though he looks promising.
Point is these guys, Larry Bird 3 championships leader of the team and magic has 5. These players and many more have won ZERO some not even a playoff game but their card value is on potential. 8 rings with these legends.
I would love to but the Laker cards that you don’t think would get a great grade. Looking to add them to a gram of old Laker cards and Sports Illustrated magazines.

You said "Penny Sleeves". Actually we have Cents here in the U.S. No, not a PSA 9 on the Magic card. A 7 or 8 would be my best guess... looking at it online.
not even mentioning the Gervin at 25:50, that's unfortunate. the card did, in fact, look very off center, but that's Gervin, man. Mr. Finger Roll, himself.
This is a great example of “if” you are gonna buy an old box of unopened sports cards, basketball is the only way to go because many are only 132 card sets, meaning you are MUCH MORE LIKELY to pull stars compared to a 726 card baseball set. To the degree it is a bad investment to layout a bunch of cash for a late ‘70s box of baseball is the degree it is a good investment to layout a bunch of cash for an old basketball set that has some legit high value cards in it, cuz you should get at least one. That’s 540 cards if they are 15 card packs.

All that matters is the grading, not the card. A poorly conditioned card, even of a Jordan rookie is practically worthless.

One of the keys to make some money back for this box is to go through all the commons and find the few that are centered to score a few common 10's
