I definitely appreciate the level of detail you include in your descriptions. As a handyman, I do so many different kinds of projects that I need these extra reminders and notes so crucial steps remain in sequence. Thanks for confirming the importance of anchoring PEX and always switching to copper when pipe needs to breach the wall. I didn't hear you mention gauging plumbing rough-in height with tile size and layout to avoid grout lines falling behind escutcheons, trim plates and tub spouts (when possible), but your finished product demonstrates this preferable aesthetic. I currently have yet another project including a tub conversion to shower, and a tub replacement, in tandem with a PEX system upgrade from old CPVC for the cold. This is in a condo w/steel studs, so I'll be cruising through your vids for any tips I don't already know. Already looking to reframe the shower to best accommodate the clients preferred tile. Fun Fun Fun!
This comment way over a home owner capable, I’m dealing with a shower/tub combination. Recently bought home so I have no history on it. Currently there is only a shower head, no spout for bathtub. There’s a existing hole for waterline spout. I’ve been watching your videos since starting on house problems. You are Very helpful, Thank You. Think this may be over my head!
Dude, thank you! I'm feeling really good about the bathtub/shower rough-in I'll be doing tomorrow, now that I've watched this video. Like many others have mentioned before me, the level of detail you provided is very appreciated. I plan to check out the other videos in your library.
Hi Shannon, Thanks for the Excellent video. I looked at some other videos, including Moens but yours is so simply explained. Ive always wanted to have His/Hers shower heads for the Wife and I. It took a bit of jiggering around with stringer boards to mount everything perfectly in alignment. It is just a "shower only" unit but im guessing it would of cost me over $500 in labour for the local "Pirate" to do it😂. I split the job with pex and push-in fittings. It went well but time consuming. I always love your videos cuz your a down to earth guy, Thanks Again. Jim.
Shannon my friend. This is Charles from Canada, I just would like to wish you a Merry Christmas and I wish you and your loved ones all the best. Thanks a million for all the time you have taken to post these informative and instructive videos. May you be blessed and I wish you a healthy life and I pray and wish no sickness comes never your dwelling. Be blessed brother.
Shannon, Thank you sir for taking the time to do this video. Always appreciate great work and down to the average DIY-er lingo. It really helps to see all the small details that go into making it work correctly. Sometimes you get folks skipping past what they think is common knowledge. Thanks again. NOW, to cutting 1/2 copper, converting top pex, raising the shower/bath spout up ~4-inches, tub, tile and (crossing fingers it all goes as planned. Diego from California.
Outstanding video. I really appreciate that you made a video showing how to install a shower and tub instead of converting a tub into a standing shower. Thank you.
I am using a Moen system very similar but unfortunately I have the bath spout that screws on and the length of the copper needs to be just right, which you talked about, ugh. Very good info you provided, thanks! It will help me a lot in gauging the depth of the Moen valve. As you mentioned, the instructions are vague in this area. It's more art than craft at that point. Wish me luck!
NICE! That bathroom job is coming along well! Reading the other comments, I would think the crimp connections would be better especially since they're back in the wall. Other than that, THANKYOU!
By the time you do one bathroom with push connects you could have bought a $45 crimper with rings and all the fittings from the orange store, next bathroom will be half the cost and you own the tools to do professional work Thanks for the video!
About the flush of the plate is what I needed to know about and Why the manual don't say it clear for the DIY . Big thanks now I have confidence and will finish my shower I owe you Sir Thanks
Here's a tip. Do not let your Teflon tape wrap over the end of the pipe. When you screw it in, may get cut off and wind up in your shower head. I've seen that happen so many times in industry...where flowmeters were reading incorrectly because they were affected by loose Teflon tape pieces. Did anyone else see how the shower head cut the ends off of the Teflon tape wrapped on the pipe? Those are the pieces that can fall off and clog the head. Also, if your tall like me, then mount your shower head high enough so that you can stand under it without having to bend down.
I know those push connect/shark fittings are convenient, but why not use pex crimp rings? I know they are more permanent, but I would think they are cheaper and no worries about the slim chance of a connection leak/failure.
Great video! About to attempt my own installation. I think I'm going to go with PEX tubing like you did. Curious about the push-in connectors though, especially the one for the tub spout, what is preventing the pipe from falling out of the connection ? I was waiting for you to clamp them on but it never came 😅 any clarification would be amazing, thank you!
The fitting has "teeth" inside that keeps the pipe from slipping out under pressure. At the 20:30 mark I explain that I will add another block of wood and clamp to the pipe .
You will find all the steps for this same bathroom in my bathroom playlist:ruclips.net/p/PLh0KqGKtX4oVviOvDmIs3DQrqsrv92LQz And here is a video vlog from that entire bathroom reno:ruclips.net/p/PLh0KqGKtX4oWQ128-wRsdwLVJNjd1bmJf
Thank you for this! I have to redo 3 bathrooms & the only plumber who will come out to my house is very rude and he refuses to sweat copper. I'm not comfortable with sweating copper, so I wanted to see how to connect copper pipe for the tub spout. I can re-use existing copper rough-in for the two tubs. I didn't realize push-fit worked on copper for some reason. I'm going to be cheap & use sch 80 PVC elbows (used for electrical conduit) for the 90° bends for the water supply to connect to the valve bodies. It's less than $1 for the elbows where I live and it will be less likely to restrict the flow. I'm going to be using thin-walled direct-to-stud wall kits so I'm wondering if I can use water-sealed plywood to reinforce the spots where holes are cut so that if they ever get pressed on/leaned on, it won't crack the surround. I know Sterling/Kohler uses plywood or OSB coated in some protective water seal for their "age-in-place backers". I'm going to be making my own for the grab bars since Sterling didn't have them in the right place for the grab bar sizes we are using. I'll also be adding braces in the wall spanning the studs that the backer boards can anchor to. Btw, do you have the link to your video on installing that valve in a thin-walled shower? I would very much appreciate it, please.
I built a shed watching your videos five years ago and now I think I can rebuilt my bathroom. Thank You!
