I have just started playing guitar again....I have no time to practice asni work for the ambulance......but this guy ....this guy's helps make things make more sense and FUN!!! Thank you
those little hammer-on and pull-off licks are absolutely amazing and way you put so much speed on them! any chance you could send through some sort of tab for them? that would be awesome to practice, its the part where you were hammering on and pulling off 7-8-7-5 on the high e-string and you follow through with that run, absolutely amazing! love your work you're teaching me so much!
Just bought your two major pentatonic DVD's! Thank you so much for all you do! I know it's coming, but please do a project on minor pentatonic soloing? I and many other will buy! Thanks, dude!
what an awesome lesson!! thank you. thank you. I am not worthy, but thank you! my personal favorites are Gilmour and Hendrix, so getting more insight to their stuff is just freaking awesome! I've been watching some of your early lessons and you have grown and opened up SO much, it's amazing, as well. Is it just the change of hats? I have my own ideas, but I'll save that for a time when I meet you. I live in LA, so you're not far. And Nash is one of my friends next door neighbors, so who knows. Later, my man!
Just a quick note- I don't think you mentioned it but you played it this way all the time- the major third always gets approached from the minor 3rd below- don't know why- but it sounds terrible going from the perfect 4th to the major 3rd, but sounds awesome and like legit blues if you go up to it from the minor 3rd below. I noticed you did that even when you were otherwise "walking" down the scale- you still always approached the major 3rd from below. Sounded great- and I've heard that "rule" before- that when playing blues or blues rock mixing the two scales- always approach the major 3rd from below. Well done as always Papa!
a Major 3rd and a flatted 5th......goes back so far in time... but maybe players didnt know the "theory" behind these notes, but they sure knew the notes and how important they were. Eddie Van Halen was/is a huge proponent of the flatted 5th
Hey Papa, you said something about 2 new products, I have one you have not seen yet, I think you would not wanna not miss this short video on my channel, . keep on teachin those super Licks , Man I love your playin. Dr Pick patch.
Awesome leason dude. You are really pushing me forward. Have you done lesson on playing the scales up and down the neck? Im just guessing atm and cant seem to link much. Thanks again
amazing amazing amazing lesson. thanks so much man! i have a noob question: does it make sense to mix the minor pentathonic with the full major scale? i think i'd better start learning how to mix maj and min pentathonic first :D
That was great. I like the way you stayed on one chord/scale. I get lost getting fancy on multiple chords. Gotta start small and work up. I know the pentatonic scales and where the roots are, but that's about it so far. I used to think a guy might be able to figure these things out by ear, but it helps SO much to know about the notes that sound good and why they work. I'm never satisfied with my playing. lol. Thanks Brett.
Right on. I've always liked your guitar lessons. Today is my Birthday so I bought myself the Papstache "Blues Soloing Secrets Major, lessons 1 and 2." Watched about an hour so far and totally digging it!! This is just what I've been looking for.
My brain just exploded !!.. Great lesson, but fuk me !.. I think I have a better chance of splitting an atom... I have a long way to go. Practice practice practice & more practice, right.
Papa, got a gear question, I have mexi Strat ,HSS config , but unlike yours my humbucker is straight like the single coils, what is the benefit of your being off axis?
Enjoyed that lesson Brett. I slowed it down to .75 speed to get the licks down correctly but when I did it made you sound like you had about 5 bong hits under your belt when you where talking. lol Guess it's that southern California accent...
I love your videos and I would like to input some constructive criticism. First off all, your products need tab. In my experience guitar teaching websites that offer tab are much easier to play along with because you don't need to memorize the lick while you teach it to us
My English is poor and I don't understand everything you say, but I think I take the sense of it all. Very useful lesson and very good job. Thanks a lot.
the best as always. only thing I didn't quite get is on what kind of chord prog this would work, it doesn't sound always good when I try over a minor CP
What works for me is this. It's a bit painful at first when you have to spend so much time figuring out what note on the scale he playing, but that stage will not last long. Every note, just figure out yourself what scale note it is. 2nd, flat 3rd, 3rd, whatever. If you like it - think it works, then remember it, maybe also some detail - what was played before or after, for example. The riff. And keep it as an option. If you don't like, don't use it. Don't worry too much about the name or "legal" notes of the scale for now. Remember the position on the scale, like flat 5th, just so you can reuse it with any other cord. see Papastache's comment a few months ago: "There are no rules whatever notes get your message across then those are the right ones :) '
So are you a Rythum Guitarist or Lead? I watched you and Tim Pierce once when he was doing the Runaway solo. I mean if you know the scales, couldn't anybody play like Tim? Couldn't You? I understand some fingers don't move as fast, but yours seem fairly fast. I just started back up playing, but im trying to go empty glass and learn these dam scales, as im sick of trying to copy cool licks, Id rather know how they were made and make my own by understanding the scales.
I do both. People can get great at technique and play all sorts of things. What sets Tim apart from most people is he not only can play at a very high level but can also create those parts in one or two takes when the pressure is on. It truly is an amazing site to see and a skill very few possess. That being said rhythm or lead, good or bad, its about having fun. Learn as much as you can but have fun trying to do it! Creating your own thing in my opinion, is where its at.
me david gilmour jimmy hendrix and mark knopfler thats it . if i learn all solos of these magnificient guitarists i am king he he its hard i know but i akways have these words on my mind NEVER NEVER GIVE UP
please post a video on how to play litous by x ambassador's in open d tuneing. u taught me how to play. nobody but u got me started man. I learn a lot from u dude
Great lesson as always, thanks. I know the five positions and I'm memorizing licks in each position thanks to you Brett with the help of stacking notes from your early lesson. also, it would be great to mix the major with the minor using your tips.. thank you
IMO, mix things up by using the 'drunken cat fight' (sparingly) to create tension and convey emotion. Some rules are made to be broken when speaking from the heart. "Drunken' cat fight", LOL! What an accurate description. Well, said. Great video!
HOLY SHIT!!!!!!! I have been playing for over 30 years (played professionally for 15 but was always 'theory challenged'/'self taught'), and you just made 'passing notes' make sense!!!! I've been playing those licks for forever because they sounded good, I just didn't know why they worked.
Well you did not cover the hybrid picking you are doing on those sick runs.. Please explain what you are doing with this technique- your too freakin fast for me to figure out. are you just getting one string down there with finger? sounds awesome Stache!! And your teaching is phenominal - I learn something in EVERY Video I have seen of yours.....dying for skype lessons from you or some sort of way to talk/ask live questions. hoping to clear up some progress killing questions that have been taunting me for way too long.....
Thanks man! I've done a few videos on the hybrid picking stuff that are on the channel. I'm going to start doing live streams in about a week or two so stay tuned for those because I am sure I'll be going over all of that kind of stuff there. I do Skype stuff when I have time. Just send me a Facebook message with our info and we can see if we can work something out. Thanks for watching!

Sure thing! Thanks for watching and the kind words!

Haha classic! Glad you liked it! Thanks for tuning in!
Awesome Tutorial There Papa !! Oh & mine happens to be Like #900 Whoopie !! Many Thanks you are Super-Cool.
Thank you sir!
Check out 10:57 for some heavy blues shredding!
Do they " extra notes" only work over a 1 , 4 , 5 major chord progression ?
They come into play with the chords of the progression. It is just finding the notes of whatever chords you are playing within the scale you are in.
I need that shirt.
They have tons of good ones!
papastache102 Is that trump on that Dino? XD
i rate the stache 10/10
Just a quick note- I don't think you mentioned it but you played it this way all the time- the major third always gets approached from the minor 3rd below- don't know why- but it sounds terrible going from the perfect 4th to the major 3rd, but sounds awesome and like legit blues if you go up to it from the minor 3rd below. Thanks!
True this ! It just doesn't sound the same, just terrible when approached from up.
"Which sounds like a drunken cat fight" you killed me there
:)
I imagined two loaded catwalk models rolling around on a sea of pillows tearing each others clothes off O.o
I liked the bee fight comment lol
a Major 3rd and a flatted 5th......goes back so far in time... but maybe players didnt know the "theory" behind these notes, but they sure knew the notes and how important they were. Eddie Van Halen was/is a huge proponent of the flatted 5th
Yes he was and he is my favorite one who does it. Tons to be learned from him! Such an amazing player!

Nah you got it! Practice is always a good thing!
Cleaned my glasses and realized, “oh, you’re not Frank Zappa!”
Haha, that's a good one!
Papa, got a gear question, I have mexi Strat ,HSS config , but unlike yours my humbucker is straight like the single coils, what is the benefit of your being off axis?
It looks cool haha. Not sure if there is one. Plus I didn't need to cut out as much wood from the body putting it in that way.
I literally spend hours and hours playing pentatonic licks.. never gets old and you can always learn stuff.. love it!!!!
Me too! So much there in just 5 little notes!
Enjoyed that lesson Brett. I slowed it down to .75 speed to get the licks down correctly but when I did it made you sound like you had about 5 bong hits under your belt when you where talking. lol Guess it's that southern California accent...
Haha! I’m sure it would sound like that. That’s what I sound like when the coffee wears off!
I love your videos and I would like to input some constructive criticism. First off all, your products need tab. In my experience guitar teaching websites that offer tab are much easier to play along with because you don't need to memorize the lick while you teach it to us
Most of the products do contain tab. Just a couple of the earliest ones do not.
Hi my friend... great videos!!! Which humbucker is that??? Sounds great !!!
Not sure in that video, either a Dimarzio Tone Zone or the one I use now which is a Lollar Imperial Low Wind.
My English is poor and I don't understand everything you say, but I think I take the sense of it all. Very useful lesson and very good job. Thanks a lot.
You are welcome and you speak better English than some of my friends haha!
the best as always. only thing I didn't quite get is on what kind of chord prog this would work, it doesn't sound always good when I try over a minor CP
Thanks! Check out some of my CAGED videos and that will help.
Timely for this ESQ period... Just got the right and tasty runs.. God bless bro. .

arun Maximus there are links to levels 1 and 2 in the description
could you tell more bout blues note, blues scale, blues chord.. its hard for me to differentiate between pentatonix n blues.. im little bit confuse

see Papastache's comment a few months ago: "There are no rules whatever notes get your message across then those are the right ones :) '
Add tab to the screen please for whe your talking to make it easier for beginners. Thanks.
Would love to but I only have so much time. Maybe sometime in the future.

i like really like the level of your Tuts Papa...
Im struggeling to find the connections between pentatonics on different spots and the inhabitting chords...
Imagine you´ve found the A-major triad in 2 second box ... now you play it with a bar and different root - so you got the F# minor ... so thats got to be the relative minor key ...
but this fact the more that i learn confuses me so much !! ... the different boxes all look quiet familiar and with the leading tones you can make it sound modal ...

Amazing ideas... i never thought combining the blues note with the major would be such a snappp! question: do you put .10's or .09's on your strat?
Thanks! 9's
I'm amazed how that stringed baby was not shredded to dust after such a 20+ min. lesson... 👍good job Sir, very good lesson 👌
Thanks for checking it out!

EeYour enthusiasm is a killa, I really love these lessons where just 3 Basic chords are shown beautifully all over my neck. You show da notes then pull it apart like a chicken then gracefully eat it. To be honest.
Haha! Thanks for checking it out!
Teaching feelings? :) most important!
Drunken cat fights are the worse ones. Thanks Brett, one of your best lessons for sure.
