3 Keys To Killer Blues Rock Phrasing - Guitar Lesson - Tips and Tricks To Awesome Blues Solos

- Do you love good blues rock phrasing like I do? Whether it's Hendrix or 80's metal, I can't ever get enough! But, learning how to do it well can feel like a daunting task. I've been playing since I was about 12 (which was a long time ago) and it wasn't until about 8 years ago that I started to crack the code on how to do it.
One thing I hear a lot as a guitar teacher is "I've been playing for years and I still don't understand how to solo the way I want" or, "I know the scales but don't understand how my favorite players make the same scale sound so much cooler." I know what they're talking about because that's exactly how I felt.
I don't want it to take you over 20 years to get this like it did me, and that's where the 3 keys to killer blues rock phrasing comes in.
So, what are the three keys?
1. The first and obvious key is knowing the scale or scales to use and the key that you're playing in.
2. Of equal to or greater importance than the scales is the ability to see the chords of your song within those scale positions. In other words, if you're using pentatonic position 1, you have to be able to find the notes of your chords in that scale position. This is critical to playing melodically because those are the cool sounding notes or the target notes! This concept will be much easier to understand when you watch the video I made about this.
3. Feel. This is huge! Blues is all about the feel. This is what connects with the listener, it is the emotional content of the music. In blues it's often the bends, vibrato, and timing of the notes being played that makes the solo "feel" so good. While this can take years to master, the tips in this video will quickly get you on your way to playing your own killer blues rock solos.
Damn! Just had an "Aha!" moment at seeing chord shapes in the scales. I've been playing for 20 years and now it all makes sense! Thanks! I must have missed that lesson somewhere.
Me too!
you're the beeeeest! with 20 minutes of this video and i've been like 3 hours making pauses taking my time to practice each thing that you teach and it's awesome! it seems like i just add years of experience playing guitar in only one session. love you mannn. i'll stay in tune! greetings from Argentina!
Awesome! Thanks so much for checking it out!
I get it now. Iv been meaning to do the little stickers on the fret board so I kno all the notes. I'm gunna do it right now.you are a good teacher for sure. Ppl think if u kno something u can teach it. Not true. There's things that people forget to tell ya cuz its second nature. That's the difference in bad /good teacher;what they remember to tell ya. Most great players say " I practiced" but practice doesn't get you any were without knowledge. Ya can try to build a house eventually your gonna read a book and that put the knowledge into practice.thanks man I like when I feel like I've earned a skill point, especially on guitar/drums/bass. It makes me feel inspired so thanks for helping me get my skill points up. Its midnight . tommorows(today's)the 4th I'm gunna play for a bit n hit the heyyy hoooo heeyyy hoooo. Happy independence day papa Mustachio. Don't forget to give the ladies that 'ol mustache ride . -D
Some excellent phrasing out of those chord shapes.
Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching!
I totally agree with the mojo you can create-thanks so much for the info and the easy style that makes sense and has the stuff we all need. I also liked the melodic examples which strike that note /sound for me that registers.
I just wanted to comment and say thanks man.
I'm too noob to put a lot of your stuff into action, but you're absolutely the guitar tutor chanel I enjoy watching most.
wassup Mr Stash from New Zealand! Top lesson you da man! Rock on Brother!😀😀👍👍
I don't know what I want more: Papa's chops or his T-shirt collection.
Haha!
thanks for all the videos and the work.
+Compaychago You are welcome!
Love your energy, the passion and the humour - the delivery is fresh, approachable and open. A natural teacher.
+Mark Ward Wow awesome! Thanks!
Awesome! Thank you so much....
Thanks for watching!
SUPER !!!
Thanks!
Ive learned so much from you, thanks!!
Thanks for checking out the vids!
can u do a lesson of bleeding heart on the valleys of Neptune record by Hendrix?
You just filled a major gap in for me....a massive aha moment.....CAGED + scale = melodic solos......thank you!!!
+rcolang1 You are welcome!
Eureka! I found it. Thanks Master, you have enlightened me again.
+Ray Ross Haha you are welcome! Thanks for watching!
LISTEN to this guy - he "GETS IT" I am so impressed with him I wish I saw this 20 years ago. It took me SOO long to see a lot of the stuff he is sharing. This guy is a FIND. I would love to go have a beer with him kind of guy.
I love him, like his licks, but to much talk. please just show the lick. people who buy cars don't need to know and understand how to rebuild a transmission, they don't need any lessons about mechanics t o drive, people wanting to know guitar licks don't need thousands of hours of music theory , PLEASE JUST SHOW THE LICKS SO WE CAN GET ON WITH IT, NO TALKING PLEASE.
Great lesson, Papastache! If you did a full blown super detailed course on this, I'd buy it in a heartbeat! Could be one of the best courses yet! Thanks again for all your help and for making learning guitar FUN!
Well, I'm a professional saxophones player, and I started to play guitar with the intention to improve my left hand skill, since on guitar the left hand works very much. This was the story; the beginning of the story. The rest of the story is that now I'm becoming passionate about guitars, so much that I gave away the cheap acoustic one buying a Jazz guitar first and a Gibson (little devil I guess is the name of this guitar) and I'm planning to get a Les Paul soon or later. I just needed some lessons, so I've found your mail in my mail box, and curiosity killed the cat! So I came to check it out. So thanks for you stuff over here, I think I'll continue to follow your precious lessons.
Hahaah, i love your serious begging look when talking about Gary Moore. He is amazing. Btw if you wanna see a living Gary Moore check out this dude called Kingfish. Search for Kingfish Hey Joe first video. A M A Z I N G. Seriously got tears in my eyes at 1:19 and onwards. HOly Shit. Then he started rippin' that neck to pieces! Sick Gary Moore vibes on that dude. Same sense of pitch bends vibrato licks in general. Overshreds a bit at times but really doesnt matter with such a feel for the blues.
Thanks for the lesson. When I'm hitting licks should I be playing the scale that corresponds with the cord? For ex the 1-4-5 prog. would be the scales for the 1 cord when the 1 cord is in rhythm...scales under the 4 cord when the 4 chord is strummed..etc...seems like a dumb question but I'm basically trying to make my lead playing more harmonious and musical
Papa stache, I'm currently doing this so it's cool to stumble across this. I still have alot of practicing to be able to see which chord/shapes you're playing in real time as you're playing. I got lost when you started moving around in a chord progression 11ish minutes in. I know what you're doing, but I can't mentally see the shapes/notes on the fretboard quick enough to know what chord you're on in real time.
Currently im only practicing major 1-4-5 chords, with the major pentatonic. Trying to freely play and spontaneously change between chords, hitting the 3rds as I mix between chords and pentatonics in different areas on the neck.
OMG, WOW, WOW, WOW, you have just filled in so many missing blanks that I have been struggling to understand for the last five year. Cheers dude. Firstly sick playing as well. What a gift to put out there. The universal will surely thank you.
its BELGIAN fries, french fries my ass, frying stuff in boiling oil , like patato schips, is a BELGIAN invention
hey Papa. everything u teach is awesome. I totally agree with you about feel. I started to play less than 3yrs ago n struggle for 2yrs stuck in a rut playing scales badly. then I found the most awesome n articulate teacher called Papa stache. thanks to you I gain lots of knowlage n Feel for music n timing. oh n then you introduced me to Master Tim Peirce. another master of feel. if there was a award for most awesome dude it be you. thanks for all your hard work. I can only imagine how long it takes to film n plan your videos. stressful I say. THANKS Bret (Papa) oh n I only have a €99 strat copy but thanks to you it sounds fine
Papastache in a blues progression=Ablues, say you play Dm pentatonic over D and Em pentatonic over E or say major pentatonic, is that a totally wrong approach or some form of modal angle.
Dude youre lessons have help me improving on the guitar, but can you make more lessons about nightwish, 'cause there's no lessons on youtube from them...then again thanks for the lessons!!
'Stache, you're da man! You just cleared up all the phrasing issues I was having. Thanks dude! I just subscribed to your channel.
i rate the stache a 10/10 the best on YT
Wow thanks man!
At 10!? NO NO...I give this guy a 20/20! :)
Jaime Gianola Dude no doubt! This breaks down so much I have been missing.
Please do "Might as well get stoned - Chris Stapleton" That would be really awesome!!
Awesome! You showed how Caged system is important, specially with that 3 keys!
Another awesome lesson Mr. Stache. I'm already up on the CAGED system, but it was totally worth my time to hear your description of visualizing the chords with the scales. There's always some juicy nugget that I've overlooked and you help me make the connection. Today it was visualizing the **minor** chord instead of the major chord when using a minor pentatonic pattern. Of course in Blues we take advantage of the minor pentatonic to access some of the blue notes and overlay the minor pentatonic on a major progression. That's what started me on visualizing the major chord over the minor pentatonic. But then the problem is that pesky major 3rd note. :-) Using the minor shape is less cluttered because it overlays perfectly on the minor pentatonic scale. Of course, I can add or bend into that major 3rd as needed. Good stuff. Rock on!
Thank you, your intention to transmit makes the difference in my opinion.. best wishes
Not only good, but seems like a good guy too! I'd buy him a drink, not in a gay way!!
Awesome lesson Brett. You are really maturing as a teacher [sacrilege...I know-- I couldn't think of a better term]. You might want to learn the Eric Clapton F/U fingering of the Eminor bar, because it always looks like you're playing an Emajor. Clapton, on the other hand, always looks like he's flipping the audience the bird when he plays the chord. "Middle finger flashing for all to see..."
I kept thinking the same thing I'm like its minor but he def looks like he's playing a major???
Brilliant lesson that taught me many things in a short time...the light bulb lit up while watching this lesson...thank you for being you and enthusiastically helping others learn music!
Interested to find out all about that Strat' of yours. Not sure if you have done a Vid on it yet.
Holy Moly...Loved your whole series of melodic lessons and the way you've put them together. You're right on the money with this one. Each time I watch it I see more of what you're talking about. Neck U-N-L-O-C-K :) Top teaching Papa
Awesome! Thanks for checking it out!
how could there even be any thumbs down on the views. Thanks man for breaking it all down into what we intermediate players can grasp. I do play in church and on my couch, and I often think about how others feel what I'm trying to play. As Robert Frost poetically once said, "and miles before I sleep. And miles before I sleep."
Thanks for checking it out!
papastache your effin awesome man! way cooler than my real papa.
Awesome lesson here!! Visualizing the chords really helped a lot ... Ok, not new in general, but there are certain times this helps to focus on the music and the motion. cheers man, appreciate your Style and channels
Thanks! Thanks for watching!
A super like for this KILLER lesson👍 you not only possess the skills and knowledge, but also know how to present it in a palatable way. Keep up the good service to the guitar community.
Wow! It just unlocked everything for me now. It's crystal clear... It's a whole new way to look at the fretboard now. Thanks, man... Greetings from Brazil!
As always, STELLAR tips and tricks! I always learn a ton from watching every one of your videos. I've incorporated most of what you've taught into my own playing. The Stache rules!!
+jcoulter43 Awesome! Glad the videos are helping you out! Thanks for watching!
To use scale as a map and chords as a destination is a greatest wisdom a heard about playing the guitar! You`re always fun and educative to watch, thanks for another great lesson!
Thank you! Thanks for watching!

That is a killer lesson - thankyou so
much
Glen Frey? papa how do I Learn your ways?
this was all so confusing untill I learned the caged system . now it's like butter on bread it melts right into my brain.
Caged is the key. It was the lightbulb for me. Glad it's working for you. Thanks for watching!
Yes he's a 20 / 20 kick ass sense of humor AND the CAGED thing is SO important-allows you to visualize where the notes and chords and scales etc are on the d fretboard.
Wow, really good stuff Papastache. My question is when you are playing of over say the 4th or 5th chord in a A minor progression and targeting those specific notes in the chords-- D & E - are you still playing within the framework of Am pentatonic? I can see how you targeting the chord tones based on what chord you are playing over, but what is the pattern you are using to work around those target notes. And how is this different from playing Am pentatonic over the whole progression. Sorry, hope that makes sense. And my apologies if that's too long of a question. Thanks!
Great lesson. Hey when are you going to get with your friends and play again for that big gig you do once a year ? Your Pink Floyd playing sounded fantastic and your tone was incredible. Thanks.
Late to the game but are you John Stossel?
This lesson should be titled "Key to the Highway" relating to the old blues standard. I believe that your partner (Tim Pierce) and you have helped each other become better guitar teachers. The tutorials from both of you have improvement significantly in the past six months. Not saying the tutorials weren't very good before, however, Papa this lesson is loaded with wisdom. Thank you, Bert
What about the Major Pentatonic scales? Are they worth memorizing too? Maybe I just missed the lessons but I can't recall anything on them. Anybody out there have any thoughts on this. Thanks
Same as the minor pentatonic scales just 3 frets lower mate.
Hey thanks for the info.; I had copied the 5 positions of the Minor Pentatonic on paper a long time ago. But when I compared them to the Major Pentatonic they are identical except, like you said 3 frets lower. Thanks again.
Bit confusing, when you said you were playing the E minor shape at the 5th fret it looked like you were playing an E major shape. You need to say you're not fretting with your second finger.
Another great guitar lesson and thanks
i've been coming back to your channel for the hendrix lessons, finally subbed now keep it man!
Thanks for the sub!
So what you're saying is that, for example with a single position/box of the pentatonic scale, you can hit any chord progression by know the three shapes (a shape, e shape, dm shape)? Trying so hard to catch on to this, have watched a couple videos of yours on this and hasn't clicked yet. You're stumping an engineer lol
I need to watch this a few times but this is probably my favorite video of yours. Adds huge leaps in skill from simply memorizing scales.
Haha! Another way to do it is pick a chord progression and then don't you a scale and just try to solo out of the shapes. What happens that way is by using only the chords to solo the scale will start to appear!
This guy is by far the most personable and casually knowledgeable guitar teacher I've seen yet on YT. Simple, clear, and obviously enjoying himself. I always learn something from his videos.
what happens if the song is in the key of C?
What type of amp are you using?
Thanks bro. This is exactly what i have been looking for.
You are an awesome guitar teacher man. By the way, what Fender Strat is that that you are you playing? Looks the same as my MIM 60's road worn fender.
Thanks for the great tutorials and awesome channel. I love playing jammy rock and your teaching technique keeps me coming back for more. It has really helped me unlock some of the secrets of the guitar neck but I still have many things to learn;) Thanks.
I learned a lot from this lesson that I should have learned oh about 55 (damn) years ago. Thanks a lot Mr. Stache!
So papa! Thank you, thank you etc. I watched this a few times and then played the best guitar I have ever played ( 3 years in) I'm playing and thinking...WOW! Is that really me? Another brilliant lesson, thanks man.
Dude, I have been stuck in almost the same phrases, You step out of that in just the way I needed to start climbing out of this rut. Thanks brother.
Thanks for all GuitaMan!
Love your funny style, but that was helpful and useful lesson thanks!
Thanks! Glad it worked for you!
I need more of this in my life. Subscribed. Thanks for the brilliance!

Thank you again .. i started playing about 2 years ago.and i finally got it....glad i didn't give up...you are the best...
This dropped into my YT recommendation with perfect timing as I have just started matching up major and minor pentatonics with the chords and their arpeggios. It's reeeaaaally useful. Great video
It's true what you say man, same here, I played for years till I learnt those finer points you mention, it makes all the difference.
Great, great lessons, you and Marty are really the best for lessons, greatly explained and performed. Thanks a lot, papa
