"Celtic and Irish music is like a heart hug"
This man is a genius
Whoa I read your comment literally as he said it. Cool
I'm currently reading a book on Celtic music and that's literally what it says, just with longer (and more) words
Ever watched a cartoon saloon movie? (They got lots of Celtic music)
So is she
Yes, yes he is.
BRO. This was an unreasonable amount of fun!! Thank you again for inviting me along and for your amazing work and collaboration!! Happy St Paddy’s day! 💚☘️
It was a joy learning so much about Irish music! Thank you so much!
Aah! Cullen! I was so excited to see you on Melinda's channel! I was all "omg I know someone famous!" Lol
But seriously, I miss your genius face. It's so great to watch you geek out over art. Glad to see you're still doing so well.
You look so sad while playing all those instruments. (not) :-)
Do you know who Ali Spagnola is?
Loved watching you play. I noticed you hold your bodhran tipper pretty far back. If you choke up a little you'll have an easier time hitting triplets.
Yooooo!! It's so cool seeing you pop up on my RUclips recommended after meeting you at A3!!! Your playing amazes me every time I hear it!!!
You have no idea how badly I want an entire album of pop covers like this.
I would buy that in a heartbeat lol
I would definitely buy it
Does she have videos of just this
Add me to this for the reminder
Check hildegard von blingin's channel, it's basically all a lot like this.
The pure joy from Cullen when he was clapping to this song was all the serotonin I needed 😍
If you don't wanna listen to the two beautiful music nerds, here are the timestamps:
3:23 Drivers License by Olivia Rodrigo
5:23 Blinding Lights by The Weekend
7:05 Levitating by Dua Lipa (Slide version)
8:29 Levitating by Dua Lipa (Slow Reel version)
Thank you so much for all the amazing content! You two are good eggs.
Thank you! RoseLover1995 for this! Good Eggs indeed! I appreciate being able to skip to the music here.
Who wouldn't want to listen to the two beautiful music nerds?
is it weird I never heard not a single one of these in the original?
loved the Irish versions though...
Commenting to be reminded of this video haha
@@lastmanstanding5423 I haven't seen any except Blinding Lights
Was already a fan of Cullen, and you are equally wonderful! I live for this sort of thing and you two are such incredible musicians.
Oh... I didn't expect to see a legend of your caliber in the comments section
I LOVE YOUR CONTENT SO MUCH
PRODUCE MOAAAAAR PLEASEEEEE
@@Malinda Awe wow, thank you! Likewise! As a novice on the Irish whistle, this was super informative!
her ladyship has graced the comment section with her presence!
I hope "Will It Irish?!" will become its own series...
yup!
Or more in general “will it (insert cultural music here)”
So fun and creative, and I fully agree that folk music is like a hug for your heart. There is just something so familiar and homey to the sounds and melodies of folk music.
YESSS
Did you listen to a lot of folk music at home?
❤❤❤
Hmm, I was told that the difference between a violin and a fiddle is that you don’t spill beer on a violin. 😜
It’s really awesome to hear other traditional northern but not Irish instruments join in on an Irish jam session, especially nyckelharpa or hurdy-gurdy. And they can definitely keep up!
Amazing adaptions, especially the slide jig and the march!!
I was told the same thing
You need tone beer though. I heard you get deepest timbre with Guinness ;)
@@jamessan3404 True that!
@@patricialyons491 and sad part is I ain't even joking too much. Beer does lower voice after all.
I'm from the Scottish Highlands this is literally 2am at a house party when ur pal gets his guitar out minus the beautiful flute playing! Awesome, loved it ❤
❤❤❤
As an Irish person who’s grown up with this style of music almost exclusively, this is way more perfect then it should be
Music nerds are the best aren't they?
@@adamaris1760 no, I'm a music nerd and this video gave me anxiety. Apparently Irish people have their own definitions for music terms and it traumatized me.
@@SorenPenrose sorry to hear that 😅
@@SorenPenrose I guess the Irish just don't like standard terminology I'm an Irish dancer there are no standardized names for the moves, each different country, state, and school calls them different things lol
same its great!! ive been learning the fiddle since I was 6, and my family always had sessions! its so cool to see
as a scottish musician who really enjoys both scottish and Irish traditional music, be it folk, ceilidh or otherwise, it's really fun to listen closely and get to know the subtle differences between the two, and appreciate the similarities.
As an irish lad I agree
I was expecting the Aire to be more Strathspey-like, after it being described as the slow one, but they're still very different!
Agreed! Irish and Scottish Gaelic tunes have always sounded slightly musically different to me but I'm not enough of a musician to figure out exactly how, I'd love to see more on the similarities and differences. Both are so lovely.
SO. MUCH. JAUNTY.
How much jaunty?
AL DA JAUNTEEE!!!!!!!!
Robert has a Jaunty Hat- Hildegard Von Blingin
Cullen clapping in Blinding Lights gives me so much LIFE! (5:35 he looks like a proud aunt at a recital)
Holy shit that blinding lights is straight fire. Can we have full version please? I need to destroy the replay button kindly.
Agreed!!!
Yes
It is really cool ! Another cool (metal) version is by Feuerschwanz
My bird danced along and honestly that’s a super high compliment due to her usually screaming at my music choices
Anyone else want full versions of these??
Need
Yes
Yes.
I will Cry if I don’t get a full version
Would love that
I would actually 100% buy an album of you two covering pop songs
❤❤❤
5:50: If only everyone were having as much fun as that clapping guy! xD
❤❤❤
The last one was the best I think. Sounded so much like the actual song, yet beautifully Irish at the same time
I put the lyrics to “Blinding Lights” through Google Translate, and it became “The Light Is On” when translated too many times.
Can you send her a request for that on her translator fails channel I would live to see it

okay but can we get a full version of that irish blinding lights? that was heavenly
How is it that he plays a million instruments, but I can't stop enjoying his clapping the most!?
Its the beaming smile
Once you learn a few instruments, every further one becomes increasingly easy, so a person who plays 10 different things can probably expand into 30, and then further again, no problem. But a nice enthusiastic, on point clap? That can't be bought.
Because it's extra sassy ^^
As an irish dancer myself i know that the songs can be boring and irritating. I love the fact that she can turn a boring treble reel and turn it into something amazing! 🍀🇮🇪
You lass are a national treasure and very talented! I wish more people "felt" music the way you do. Thank you so much for bringing the love of such a wonderful genre to a world-wide stage.
The irish version of levitating gives me so much energy i can't even stop my self from smiling . Thank you malinda🙏🥰
So when are the full versions of these covers going on Spotify? These are some wonderful little gems I would love to bring into my “DnD” playlist
So much fun! I love that idea
Yes I also desperately need these recording pleeeeeease!
I adore all of his different facial expressions while he's playing the same song on different instruments and you know he's actually alone.
I'm not joking. I think it's bloody adorable!
Clapping Cullen is my favorite vibe, and now I have to listen to hours of jigs and reels, thank you very much. ^-^
The playing and improv was awesome. The comedic timing of the edits made me giddy, and I actually laughed aloud at, "'We could go full 12/8, but I don't think we should. We'll keep it at-- or, maybe...?' 'What would it sound like in 12/8?' *Cuts to an elaborate and fleshed-out full accompaniment*."
Otherwise, I only knew of "Blinding Lights" so I don't know the context on the rest, but it sounded fun either way! Thanks for the edu-tainment!
One of my favorite videos of yours, been lurking for a while and realized I haven't subbed. Gonna do it now.
Hey you two, I absolutely love this video. I'm born and raised Irish, and I'm so impressed by your accurate knowledge. I was bathed in Irish music all my life. Hey public, believe everything Melinda says here. It's all true.
A "heart hug"? Yes, that's what it is.
Happ SP day, y'all🙂👍☘🇮🇪
I literally grinned when Blinding Lights started. Holy crap that was awesome and needs to be a full cover that I would never stop listening to.
I don't listen to pop music, I'm a metalhead myself, but, I love listening to Irish/Celtic music. This was fantastic! Thank you.
My three years of Irish step dance was coming out strong, and then that reel had me doing overs. Beautifully done, both of you!
I love how happy Cullen is while clapping.
I'm born and reared in Ireland, but now live on another continent. I was already impressed when you pronounced bodhrán correctly.
The music is giving me overwhelming nostalgia for the trad sessions I regularly went to. You've really captured the essence perfectly. I love this, I want full versions of each song!
Foil, Arms, and Hog might want to have a word with you. (Referencing their ongoing pop song parody series.)
My brain also went to their Irish Farmer
I want this crossover
Yes!
Yes please! Doomdah!
"A heart hug" - that might be why this clip wanted to make me cry. Thanks.
“I’ll text Adam...”
Sound clip from Adam answering the question...
Huh. So they really do all know each other.
I can tell you we all do yes xD

3:23 driver’s license
5:25 blinding lights
7:06 levitating
8:30 levitation #2

I love every single thing about this. AND I learned a lot! I've been trying to learn more about my Irish heritage lately, ad I really love music, so this is awesome! Thanks you too!
Love the profile pic!!!❤️❤️❤️
hey thanks for doing this and being very respectful towards irish music. as an Irish musician, sometimes i feel like people who dont grow up in ireland can be disrespectful towards irish music (even if its unintentional) so thank you for being respectful and actually knowing things about irish music also side note your such a good flute player :)
Love seeing two musical nerds completing each other's sentences in english and in music. satisfying
*A heart hug.* That is exactly what I was needing right now. Just to get lost in some lovely music made by lovely people, because the world saw fit to remind me just how ugly humanity could be, but now it's also reaffirmed just how beautiful. Thank you both, truly.
I could listen to you play/sing Irish and folk music all day
This was so much fun, as I expected, and I want more (so now you two need to release the full music videos, not just the clips you had in this one...please?). What I wasn't expecting (which is dumb on my part because you've done this in the past) was how informative this was; I really appreciate that. Thank you!
That's so true about the lack of sheet music, I played piano for ten years before I picked up the accordion, but my piano teacher hadn't realised I was just copying her the entire time, then I started learning Irish and it was all by ear. I now believe that I was always meant to play Irish!!
Is it a piano-accordion or a button accordion?
@@DocRockBaby piano accordion, my dyslexic brain (hence the inability to read music) couldn't cope with the button accordion
@@GubbyTheBee Ah, Cool, thanks ✌️❤️🇮🇪
this is WONDERFUL... my mom's family are irish immigrants and i grew up listening to & playing irish music and it really is just. the musical equivalent of comfort food
I'm from Scotland and in our early High School music lessons, we were taught a lot about Scottish music. We had to compose a jig, a strathspey and a reel. It's so interesting to see the crossovers between traditional Scottish music and Irish music. Absolutely fascinating! We also had Scottish Ceilidh dancing in our P.E lessons and instead of a yearly Prom we had a Christmas Ceilidh. Never realised how cool it was until I met other people at uni who weren't from Scotland!
Can we stop for a sec to appreciate the absolutely BEAUTIFUL "talking voice" she has? (apart from singing amazingly)
I‘m a huge Ireland fan and fan of Irish music. This Video makes me happy! Its so great you guys keep this traditional music alive and share it with the world! Glad I came across your RUclips account tonight! Can you please transfer more and whole songs into Irish aires, reels & jigs?? 💚💚💚
i'm from syria, and i'm not really raised to have an interest in irish culture, but yet every time i watch a vedio of yours, i got cought by the beauty of your eyes malinda, and i keep watching till the end enjoying the sence of your delicate soul.
much love, and i wish you peace.
I love that one of his instruments is just clapping!!! 😂
My mom used to be part of an irish band and taught herself how to sing in an irish accent. One of these days she's gonna teach me how to play the Bodran
Good luck! It's an awesome instrument.
The green glitches in the video at 3:36 are probably Malinda's attempts trying to Irishify the world! I see you, Malinda!!
"When I was learning I never saw sheet music, it's tradition to listen and play it back until you understand" no wonder sheet music looks like calculus to me
1/4 Irish here, but my dad was the pipe major of his band and my weekends were basically at any given Celtic festival (I live four block from the Irish Heritage Center in my city) so this warmed my heart and I loved this!
When you don’t know any of the songs they played
LISTEN TO LEVETATING ITS MY FAVOURITE
Ya I know none of them either
I guess that means we’re old 🤷🏻♀️
@@melaniekay3647 Nah. Well, maybe. The thing is, the songs she said were from radio stations, and we listen a specfic radio station that doesn't have those songs played sooooooooo
I won't give a thumbs down for this video, but I am with you, there are plenty of pop songs that are widely known, I found the selection of musics very odd, I didn't know any of the songs. And trust me, I'm not even american, I've been listening a lot of Scary Pockets and Postmodern Jukebox, and surprisingly they literally *cover* a lot of pop songs.
IT's so good, to hear your music again :D. Great video as always and I find it quite ironic that in GTS usually Malinda "clones" herself, but here there is just 1 Malinda and like 20 Cullens all playing different instruments.
I now play the bodhran for a local Irish dance group. "How hard could it be," I thought. You were right, harder than one would think.
"... pretty much anything that can keep up is welcome" chuckles in bass trombone
A music lesson disguised as music, I love it. This was informative and fun, it made my heart sing.
I sure hope Dua Lipa hears the Reel and Jig of her song--- just soooo good!
Just recently found this insanely cool dude's music, and now I find him here! I love it. He's making me seriously consider learning irish flute. Or whistle. Or both.
This is awesome! Would love to hear you collab on some Irish-style original songs
i don't have friends, but eyes closed listening to this(especially the last song) made me feel like having a D&D session with my friends* where we stumbled upon a tavern, no hesitation already banging our heads, jamming, jug of mead/ale for everyone. and i haven't even played D&D once. would love to
I didn't think i could like Blinding lights any more... but BROOO! Irish flare makes everything better 🥰
This was so coooooool! I have diluted Irish heritage by this generation haha, but I've always been fascinated by it. Levitating definitely sounded more recognizable as a reel, but these were all amazing.
I couldn't tell that Blinding lights was Blinding lights
Malinda: These are popular songs
Me: *Still waiting for a song I've heard before 😂😂😂
I knew drivers license would be ther ethe moment I clicked on this - that song is everywhere , took me a while to recognize the others though ...

I was already like Cullen with light hearth and chill and then he described exactly like i fell listening to irish songs. ahhhh
2:28 not that anyone asked for a banjo nerd, but here I am. Irish banjos actually only have four strings, leaving out the high drone string. idk why since drones are super common in Celtic misic
Ahh this was great! There's something so nostalgic about Irish, or more particularly Keltic music for me. My mom's a huge fan of it and even played the tin whistle for a while.
I wish I could like this a hundred thousand times! It was such fun listening and learning!
Whats makes this sooo much fun to watch is just the genuine joy one sees in your faces while you are playing the different parts of the songs. Sooo good, thanks for that
It’s so fun to find someone who is a great musician and also has Irish ancestry. I’ve never thought of celebrating mine! (Probably because I’m about half Native American and half Irish lol) I love how you explain music. I played clarinet daily and obsessed about it for years. I sat 1st chair orchestra and loved working up solos. But that was years ago and I’m more rusty than rust itself!
Mentions every instrument...leaves out the Appalachian dulcimer played in the very first song. [cries in Tennessean]
Now that I've heard which songs you used, I've never heard any of the originals barring 'Driver's License'.
Opposite, heard “Blinding Lights” because he played the Super Bowl, and I keep hearing “Levitating” in stores near me.
Yesterday, I recognized a remarkable musician, had a red piano and turned something into Billy Joel. Fun to find this one today.
I felt the "instrument panic." I have acquired a number of instruments and saw some of the ones in this video and I just said "Want...want...that one, too."
Oh my gosh, I’d love to see you two put out an album of this kind of thing, including the ones you did in this video. I’ve always loved Irish music and I love this even more.
Most Irish pop songs: Dreams by the Cranberries, and just about anything by U2.
Galway girl and Nancy mulligan are some of my favourite songs and there kinda irishy
Thin Lizzy
Wouldn’t doing Irish versions of songs by Irish bands be redundant? An Irish version of “Come On, Eileen”, frex?
Yayyyyy! Thank you thank you thank you ugg I've waited so long to hear you play that irish flute again. Make an original song with some of this irish influence please it would be so good!
It's heavenly!
I'm never gonna want to hear these songs in any other way...
Yes, please do these songs full with vocals!!!
Uhm Excuse me but, this needs to be in a whole album!
there's so much more to irish music than i thought! damn
"More Irish than the Irish" is a legitimate phenomenon xD
Conan O'Brien has entered the chat
I SO WISH THESE WERE ON SPOTIFY!! They deserve it!
Somehow the RUclips algorithm suggested this for me. It’s not typically the kind of thing I go looking for. But after a fairly long and depressing week, this video really raised my spirits. Thank you and keep putting out such enlivening content!
Knock knock. Who's there?
Irish. Irish who?
Irish you would just open the door and let me in!
😂
ALL I can see each time is the clapping part, his goofy bouncy laughing way that screams to me that he feels ridiculous and silly to just be clapping alone, LOL! Amuses me so.
"I found the perfect partner to do so" now imagine if she hadn't, this video would be her just playing the irish flute lolll
Or if your really cultured it's a gathering in a field or forest where we get pissed drunk or even sometimes high! 😂
Ive been coming back to this video for like a year now 😭 i need full versions for playlists
This was so beautiful and brilliant. Loved it. 😍. You guys are absolutely amazing 👏 ❤️.
