- I had a client that was very adamant about their side gate not weathering. I used Trex Composite Wood to make sure its stays perfect and new.

Great video, thanks for sharing. Didn't realize Trex made this thinner facia board - Great option! On our 4' wide gates I think I will Liquid Nails the backside stiffener bars to eliminate the screws showing on the front, especially because we want to run the 'wood' horizontally. Thx again
You’re videos from start to finish are always therapeutic for me, amazing!
For a guy who said hes never done this before, made it look easy. Nice and clean!
Jimbo great job! I got one tip for you, prior to installing all the countersunk screws take a piece of cardboard and stick all the screws in it tightly together in some formation next to each other and then paint all the heads at once. it's easier and screwing them in won't damage the paint...
Great video and beautiful work! Only thing I would have done differently is weld the hinges the opposite of one another so you can’t just lift the gate off the hinges, I used to build dump bodies for a truck equipment company and we also used the same hinges. Always welded the hinges on facing the opposite direction of each other. Of course you would have to weld it up on site which makes things more difficult but it is added security.
This is true, but you can also bolt a tab above the top hinge to prevent this. That way you can remove the tab and remove the gate if needed
Also, you can just lift those 2 drop pins from below and have yourself a wide-open gate.
Kudos to the flat-out outstanding craftsmanship. You are truly an artist sir. That gate is beautiful.
Wow! Those turned out really well, very surprised you didn’t have a little sag, great job.
Thanks for adding the install we appreciate it. Now I have to get busy on my gate.
The only thing I would’ve done different was put those boards on in through the tablesaw and rabbet offsetting edges so they could you create your own overlap. I noticed once they were hung you could see the light through the cracks of the doors. I just love your educational videos
Oooh, that would have been nice. A serious bump in the labor costs, but very nice.
I'll keep that idea in mind in case I ever end up owning a Californian villa with a double-wide driveway. lol
That is a good idea. I think it would be faster though to just use a router to cut out the overlap
Hey @Jimbo's Garage ... regarding those screws on the front, if you have used maybe just a smaller head screw, and instead of sinking them flush, let it bite into the Trex material a little more - their decking screws would work great btw ... then instead of paint, you just run a heat gun on top of them and the hole closes up!
You nailed it again Jimbo! Great job and you inspired me to build a similar gate to span my driveway. Any chance you can post a link to the weld-on hinges you're using? Thanks for the effort you put into producing your videos. Really enjoy them!!
good choice using those bullet hinges, nice smooth clean look that matches your work. 👌🏼
Got me using those hinges too, here in Ireland they are called cigar hinges and I use the ones with the grease nipples so I can just use a grease gun afterwards.
killer video!!!zero fat ,nothin but useable instruction...............Jimbo you are genius level
Your channel is my go to for gate styles that I've never done before. Thank you for the content you provide.
I really like to watch your videos and how u work. You pay attention even at the smalest pices of every project. I'm your truly fan from Bulgaria. Greatings! 🙂🤗
hello jimbo's my name is Yoel, I'm from Brazil, I wanted to tell you thank you for your videos, keep on being very constructive in my life, thank you and I hope one day I can meet you, a big hug from here in Brazil ...
Señor, I'm going to use those hinges from now on!✌💯super
great job Jimbo, thank you for the video on how to assemble the entrance gate and I ask you for more. Greetings from Poland! 🙂👍🏻
Fantastic job. The homeowner just got value added to their property.
This one really shows the methods of how to put together a gate simply. Definable a lot of time and work but the methodology is simple when explained. Looks great and most of all sturdy! Love the weld on hinges too btw
Great looking gate! Thanks for showing the process of install, definitely helps out.
Looks good. I would suggest using a flap sanding disk with the plastic backer to grind out the welds when you are finishing the “finish” sides of your work. You can see the impressions on this gate from using the t27. Even when it’s hanged. You’d be surprised how much easier it is using a flat disk and gives a seamless finish. Great work Jimbo, love your shop and channel.
Looks great Jimbo. FYI: red and blue chalk line are permanent. White chalk line is not permanent. I carry all three in my van.
just lay down a strip of painters tape and snap onto that
Very nice looking gates there Jimbo ! You have become quite the gate builder ! Thank's for sharing this video. God bless you and your family !!!
Jimbo should do more installing videos and concrete videos. I just learn so much in this channel.
Jimbo, I am a huge fan of yours and learn so much through your channel. Is there anyway you could tape a few videos on how weld and techniques that you have learned through the years? Maybe make it a series and I am sure that there are others that would like to see videos like this.
Nice job. I’m just about to get some new driveway gates installed and it’s got me watching all these welding videos 👍🏼
Excellent
Been planning a new gate for many years now. Using the plastic wood is a great idea.
Cheers
Nice attention to detail, you’re a real craftsman! I work with metal for a living myself. I’ve never watched one of your videos before. I don’t know if you have one, but I recently bought a Milwaukee metal circular saw. Works great for cutting those angles in the square tubing or cutting a long sheet. It’s fast and leaves a cool to the touch edge, don’t know how I lived without one. Also, I found for outdoor projects like your gate, that using a gloss black chassis car paint (like Eastwood) in a sprayer holds up extremely well. Saw palm trees in your video, I live in the snow and salt what up north so you probably don’t encounter the problems I do. Just thought I’d pass it along. Take care.
jimbo que trabajo tan bonito .que talento, eres un artista, eres un maestro.gracias por tomarte el tiempo de enseñar tu trabajo
I enjoyed watching the install, more of that would be great! Thanks for all your videos, very informative!
The gate came out super nice. Boy that had to be heavy. Nice clean look and should last a real long time.
Thank you so much for adding all the links! You don’t just show us how it’s done, you point us in the right direction too. A true elder! Thank You!!!
Wow this was so helpful mister thankyou!! Doing my first composite double gate job and I'm so glad I watched this...and I thought I was the only one who never kept their grinder wheel flat hehe 😉
Beautiful finished job! I'm sure the customers were very pleased! 👍
Nice project Jimbo! Looks amazing. I was thinking, you could probably paint those screws prior to using rather than painting them after using them.
Wow best 20+minutes spend on youtube in a while.... what an awesome gate Jimbo.
I love your attention to detail. Nice job
Good job
I like the mixture of wood with iron
I use those hilti screws almost on a daily basis, and I can tell you on this application, they won't last. There's a lot of counterlever, moving weight. Best would be threaded rod in epoxy and locking nut. It can be installed on the back wall of the tubing so it won't be in the way. Other than that, looks great!
I was thinking the same thing. I would have recommended the chemical anchor application from Hilti.
Love ur videos. Im gonna refurb my gate and make some improvements to it. It should look very similar to the one in video. Will be using composite panels. One thing i will do different is use coach bolts instead of screws.
Always enjoy watching and learning.
I need to learn more from a guy like you, thank you sir
I love this channel. Always Clean Work.
Beautiful job Jimbo!! I have always liked the zero maintenance of the Trex.
Great job bro after watching this video it inspired me to make one. I have one question whats the color name for the trex boards that you use I'm trying to order them?
If you want to improve your accuracy with a cutting wheel, score a line on your sharpie mark before cutting through.
If you use a little smaller grinder, you could use an anchor hand like you do with welding, that may increase grinder accuracy.
Another beautiful project. Thanks!
Outstanding craftsmanship!!
very nice, greetings from Holland
You made a beautiful gate there, Tom Hanks!
What do you do if the pillar isn't completely plum or straight? How to you attach the post plum without scribing it or visible shims (like in woodwork)?
Also surprised just 3 bolts held up the gates! Great work! 👍
Good masonry I guess? Seems like it was done right
Instead of face-screwing through the Trex, you could also have welded another piece of pre-drilled angle or flat bar to the side of the tubes. Then you could fastened through the flange on the crossbar into the backside of the Trex. This would probably work better with some 3/4" lumber though. I'm not sure of the 1/2"+/- thickness composite wood's ability to hold a faster, and the self tapping screws you used would be most secure.
Edit: New to the channel and I see you did that same method in another video, of course I assumed there was a reason you did what you did. Happy to find the channel, these are great build videos for practical fabrication jobs.
fantastic looking gates jimbo, you always make it look so easy, all the best, and stay safe......................................dougie
Very well done sir.
That's and amazing result. Great job.
You do some awesome work! Thanks for sharing.
I used those same type of hinges on my shed. I need to build a new gate for my house. I have a tube roller where I can do the radius on top.
Great video and project! A way to avoid those overcuts when doing a 45 with a grinder that works for me is to do the two cuts that are 45 degrees first and then the two square cuts at the end.
Gorgeous gates. Excellent work.
very good ! hello from country Georgia
Good call to add the screws in the middle area, I made a gate for a friend and he insisted not to add screw in the middle area. It was a mistake, in time the heat of the sun warps that composite planks. Looks like crap now.
Really good job.....I like the hinges and your diy pins...keep going👍
mitty fine job done there jimbo you have got some set of hands on u
Nice gate!! I can’t believe those little 3 screws held the hinge plates on.
Jimbo you are the man 👨
Nice job again! I like to see your work and you inspire me thanks I'm from Quebec Canada
Shalom bos,IM from Indonesia and i like all your video ,good job and good plat bos gbu
That’s awesome to build and Install the gates in 20 minutes. Bet it take me a week.
Great success. Very nice
Hi Jim one suggestion you could used a pice of angle inside so the way would it by screw the front But over all great work I like your videos thanks
That looks amazing.
Awesome work. The gate looks very nice. Love this type of video💪🏻
Beautiful Gates
Very good job indeed.
Real nice job Jim.
Like Choreography very well performed
Great build! Love your videos! Question... how do they intend on using the gate? I think it would be hard to open and close from the outside if this is their driveway. I assume this is a secondary entrance?
Beautiful work. Thanks from Colorado.
Looks good
Great job 👏
They look great, good job.
Nice work man and thank you for the explanation of the process!
I love it wanted to do some thing like that at my house thanks for the idea
Nice video.It is really educative.
You do nice work, Jimbo!
👀😯 fair play mate this is nuts!
Great work. Admire your detail, and very well communicated. Im looking for very same, in my metro Phoenix home. I prefer the all the same choices, metal, trex, etc., cept color. Thanks so much. Will look for bid from someone who can match your skill and style.
How do you decide what thickness or material to use for jobs? That’s what I’ve always struggled with. I always over build from fear.
Beautifully done!
very great jimpos👍👍👍👍
Nice job.
Hola desde Nicaragua un saludo siempre lindo su taller felicidades
Good work jimbo
They are awesome! Great job
Nice job looks great
Great Job
I worry about those lags on a horizontal load at 8 feet. But I'm not a scientist. So there's that
They will work free after time
Medium duty anchors are good for wall hangings that weigh up to 200 pounds and he used 6 so.....
@John C ya, a load hanging straight down from it, not cantilevered out like a gate. Also using those fasteners limits you on future adjustments against the gate sagging
You should think about using a t-flange on the back supports and screw into the composite from the back so you won’t see any screws at all in the front.
Awesome work Jimbo, the gate looks great! 😃👍🏻👊🏻
