The tricky thing about these fire emblem map themes is that the Rain and Thunder versions are meant to be heard in-game alternating between one another. So when you just listen one version, you aren't getting the full effect and the complete listening experience, which is why when you listen to only one version, it can feel a bit static and not much is going on. In this particular case, you aren't getting the wonderfully lush and bombastic orchestral hits from the thunder version If you listened a version alternating the two, I guaranteed you this would've went from a "very high silver batch," to an easy golden batch 🏅 Regardless, my pettyness aside, great breakdown Atlas 👍
I mostly agree, although I feel that this would be more applicable to FE Awakening, for instance, where the "definitive" version of the songs seems to be the "zoomed in"/Ablaze version of the songs. In Three Houses, they seemed to realize that in the battles, people spend most of their time in the zoomed out map, not looking at the zoomed in units and their animations that frankly get repetitive before too long, which is why many people eventually turn off the zooming in, meaning they'd never even hear the Thunder versions at all. That seems to be the reason why the Thunder versions of the songs in FE3H are very similar to the Rain versions, but just with more focus on percussion and some other differences. Contrast that with Awakening, where the regular and Ablaze versions are rather different, so they really, really want you to hear both versions, whereas in FE3H it's more like "here's just some more flavor for when you go into a battle animation, if you didn't turn it off..."
Loved the breakdown! As a player of FE3H, here is some insight: The main motif in this song is present throughout the course of the entire game, in various tones. It is used in happy ways, sad ways, and epic ways. The motif is mostly representative of a particular main character who instigates a major conflict in the story (some people agree with starting this conflict, others do not, but that is neither here nor there). The opening theme of the game also uses the same motif and has actual lyrics, and represents that character's internal thoughts and mental struggle with initiating this conflict. The sort of ethereal sounding portion (2:00) is the theme of a different main character who has a very close connection with the player character. The motif that starts at 2:54 is a more intense reprise of the battle theme that is commonly heard towards the beginning of the game. It's a nice callback that brings the feeling of "things sure were different back then, huh." You are right that this song plays in an important place. A capital city to be exact, which is the location of the final battle of the war you are fighting. Actually, this game has several different directions it can go in, depending on a couple of player choices. Depending on that choice(s), the second half of the game will be one of 4 different scenarios. This song plays in 2 of them. About the combination of "organic" and "synthetic" sound: it is almost certainly a deliberate thematic choice, as one of the big themes of this game is different world views, old and new, clashing. So while it's not really much to do with technology, you are onto something when noticing this about the track.
I think this is why it’s my favorite song in the game, it brings everything together and it just makes me very emotional because that game makes me very emotional. 😂
Ah yes, Three Houses time again *"REACH FOR MY HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAND-"* You've also nailed it again pinning down the leitmotif. This OST, as well as several others, contain the same leitmotif from the game's main theme "The Edge of Dawn." Starting from the opening cutscene, you've heard this melody used in times of revelry, despair, and nonchalance. This song has been with you throughout your whole journey, finally accumulating to this final chapter, with "The Apex of the World," as the final theme (for two of the endings at least). As I type this I keep adding more things as you break it down more and more to the point that I'm not convinced that you haven't played this game for how dead-on your breakdown is. Whether that's a compliment on your end or for that of the composer's, excellent analysis as always!
This song is a bombastic orchestral version of the game's main theme, which is a vocal song called "Edge of Dawn". The character who Edge of Dawn is supposed to be from the perspective of can either be the game's main antagonist or the main hero depending on which choices you make. Out of the 4 main paths this game has, Apex of the World plays for the final boss of two of them. One where you are fighting alongside the character who sings Edge of Dawn, and one where they are the final boss you’re facing. So either way this song represents the climax of that character's story.
I still find it hilarious that 3 Houses promenatly has orchestral music, yet feels perfectly natural when it switches to dubstep, and then switched again to Opera.
Always love to see a Three Houses breakdown. Love this game and the music only enhances that. Would be cool to round out the main boss theme reviews with “A Funeral Of Flowers” someday since you’ve already done God Shattering Star.
"Blue Skies and Battle (Rain)" is probably my favorite theme in the whole game. If it's not requested soon that means I need to become a patron just to suggest it myself, but it would be worth it.
I actually prefer Between Heaven and Earth more! It’s the same as Blue Skies and Battle but it just sounds more epic XD it’s the one that plays on Gronder Field!
The Insight was very on-point, and explained why this was such a great capstone song to the section of the game it was in. This is my favorite application of a leitmotif in media tbh, the sheer chills it brought~
Yeah, this is how you do a final battle song at the end of a long game, you use motifs from previous songs in the game to create a sense of nostalgia for your journey, whilst also making the track very grand. Hearing this song for the first time in game on your first route is certainly something.
This song is already on the verge of making me cry after a year or so away from the game. Revisiting this soundtrack later in life is going to have me in shambles 😭
I feel validated when you praised the stuff I loved already, and then enlightened when you highlighted something I never truly noticed, the percussion. Nice breakdown
You should try listening to: The Tomorrow with You - Yasunori Mitsuda, The Power of Jin - Yasunori Mitsuda, or Battle!!/Torna - Kenji Hiramatsu from Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (and DLC), all amazing songs for very different reasons.
I'm a relatively new sub, and I've been loving your video game soundtrack reactions! "Coalescence" from Risk of Rain is one of my new favorite songs right now, and I wouldn't have discovered it if it wasn't for your reaction! So I have a few suggestions for you for other tracks that are some of my favorites from other games that I think you'd really like: "Possessed by Disease" from Nier Automata "In the Mirror" from Celeste "Komorebi Pt. 1" from Gris "Daredevil" from Persona 5 Strikers "Ideal and the Real (End version)" from Persona 5 Royal All of these songs are incredibly unique from each other. Each one has a different feel in terms of tone, instrumentation, and emotional context. I hope you'll give at least one of them a listen someday!
Dude, three houses is insane with that soundtrack. I haven’t finished the game myself. Byleth being introduced into smash is actually what sparked my interest in this game and mostly the main character, but hearing the soundtrack has been an awesome experience. If you get the chance, could you listen to “between heaven and earth?”
I highly recommend the Octopath Traveler Soundtrack As the name suggests, it is a JRPG game following the journey of 8 different characters who travel together and each have their own motives and goals. Each character also has a particular instrument that represents them, which I found fascinating. Unfortunately this is harder to appreciate without listening to each character's theme or at least their motifs(which are actually separate tracks at the end of the full OST). Octopath Traveler as a whole is heavily inspired by previous popular JRPGs like Brave Frontier, and is, in my opinion, meant to create a remastered JRPG experience with modern orchestration and technology while not straying too far from what they used to be. Although the soundtrack as a whole is stellar, my top picks are: "Main Theme", "They Who Govern Reason", and "Flamesgrace, the Guiding Light". If you could react to all of them eventually, that'd be great, but I think any of them would be great picks.
Atlas, loved the reaction. I’ve seen a good amount of your reviews, and I’d love to hear your analysis on this game’s Funeral of Flowers. There’s a piano arrangement in-game that I think you’d love to compare to late romantic composers, while I loved the countermelodies and chord voicings in the full-ensemble arr. Thanks for the review!

The one where this track is from, Three Houses, is an excellent starting point and a great game to play (assuming you like strategy RPGs or at least RPGs in general). If you have a Switch then I'd say give Three Houses a try!
Knowing what Edelgard put herself through at that point in Azure Moon, you're right the track and game overall does have a slight Sci-fi element to it. The shifting balance between the synth and orchestra was also an interesting idea you brought up and very symbolic when the two parties involved are clashing over ideals, with the newer party(the synth) trying to start a new world order entirely. Or maybe I'm overthinking it.
