Reach for my hand, I'll soar away Into the dawn, Oh, I wish I could stay Here in cherished halls, In peaceful days I fear the edge of dawn, Knowing time betrays Faint lights pass through colored glass, In this beloved place Silver shines, the world dines, A smile on each face As joy surrounds, comfort abounds, And I can feel I'm breaking free For just this moment lost in time, I am finally me Yet still I hide, Behind this mask that I have become My blackened heart, Scorched by flames, a force I can't run from I look to you Like a red rose Seeking the sun No matter where it goes I long to stay, Where the light dwells To guard against the cold That I know so well As the rain falls on the path I chase your shadow I don't feel a single drop, Or the ground below Then you turn to me and I Stop before I know And the lie upon my lips I let it go Cross my heart Making vows I know will be betrayed A sad girl's pleas Live only for a breath and then they fade My dearest wish Is that you’ll know These tender thoughts That only seem to grow They are as snow Melting away Yet seeking your warm If only for a day The blue moonlight Cuts across our sight As pure and clear as a ringing bell Reaching for us in the night As the wind calms my thoughts, I held strong on this terrace I feel at peace, Carried away by the wind's song Open the door And walk away Never give in To the call of yesterday Memories that made Those days sublime These ruined halls entomb Stolen time Reach for my hand I'll soar away Into the dawn Oh, I wish I could stay Here in cherished halls In peaceful days I fear the edge of dawn Knowing time betrays
Something I want to note, 1. Edelgard is the flower as she requires byleth to truly flourish and bloom, whereas in the other routes she's cold and distant hiding her emotions and true feelings towards the world like a bud which has yet to bloom. 2. Dimitri is the moon and is a reflection of byleth's light, which could be a reference to how he require byleth the most and without it he's stuck in the eternal darkness of the night 3. Claude is the wind, since he's the needs byleth's aid the least( since it's possible that he survived every route) he simply Carries byleth's warmth and spreading his message(gives aid to byleth in ss and in am after you save derdriu) 4. The snow is that off Rhea's heart and what obscures the truth, since you do learn a large amount of plot from the church route and you are what melts Rhea's cold heart. So from all the nature imagery I would say that byleth represents the sun(I'm not sure if it's mentioned in that 4 seasons poem but it makes to much sense in how the characters function off of byleth) he provides the guiding light for success in all routes, edelgard grows more as a person and as a leader thanks to byleth, dimitri sees the error of his ways and leaves the darkness of his inner demons, claude achieves his dream and spread a joint message of unity across fodlán, and byleth melts away at the snow that obscures the truth of fodlán never receiving the full picture but at the very least a proper grasp. Edit:spelling errors rectified
Spot on, I'd say. Really drives home the tragedy of it all - four people going down dark paths (well maybe not Claude but he's sandwiched between them) who ultimately need a warm, guiding hand to stop them from losing the good they all have and destroying themselves. Byleth can be that hand, but only for one of them. The rest follow their tragic roads to a tragic end.
Coom Fish I think Rhea is the flower instead - while it is Edelgard that’s the center of the route, flowers are Rhea’s theme - Funeral of Flowers is Rhea’s song, and she’s the one that wears flowers in her outfit. Snow also appears to be Byleth, not Rhea - they’re the center of the story and are associated with the snow’s blankness.
E It’s meant to specifically be for Silver Snow. In fact, one of my biggest issues with the game is how this song’s lyrics don’t apply to any of the other three routes. Edelgard doesn’t have the connection to Byleth the lyrics talk about and doesn’t have that same sorrow knowing she has to do what she must like Silver Snow part 1 as we hear here. In fact, if you go into the event viewer, cutscenes in Black Eagles Part 1 and Silver Snow that are relevant to Edelgard have portions of the lyrics, like how the Fates chapters relevant to the prophecy were named after parts of Lost in Thoughts
Jacob Heward umm I think you’re right for the most part but there is a huge reference to azure moon when she says “open the door, and walk away, never give in to the call of yesterday” cuz that’s literally what happened
@@PeteyPirahna77 "blackened heart" for what she had to become, "a sad girl's plead, live only for a breath and then I fade" because when she was young and subjected to crest experiments, all her siblings died, but she lived and the crest experiment worked on her. Her hair was originally brown, then turned white and the "Live only for a breath and then I fade" is because the result of the experiment would cause her life to be greatly shortened, so she probably lives lets say 2 or 3 years after her route ends (if you side with her)
"Like a Red Rose seeking the sun no matter where it goes." (Crimson Flower) 1:27 "They are as Snow melting away..."(Silver Snow) 2:54 "The Blue Moonlight cuts across our side..." (Azure Moon) 3:17 "As the Wind calms my thoughts..."(Verdant Wind) 3:28
it took me a while to realise that the four routes all references the four seasons. Crimson Flower (Spring) Silver Snow (Winter) Azure Moon (Autumn) Verdant Wind (Summer)

3H is in the awkward space where it's not old enough for people to feel nostalgic about it but not new enough to be the shiny new toy. Once a few years have passed and people have settled down about the game, I bet 3H will be looked back on as one of the best FE games.
@@hansgretl1787 I feel like at least part (won't say all - there's a lot of people with many other reasons) of the negativity towards it, is just the latest iteration of Fire Emblem fans hating the latest game. It just so happens that Engage is 1) a lot more similar to previous games so FE16 still stands out a lot in comparison to it and 2) even though I like Engage a lot it's unfortunately a lot less memorable than 3H. @@hansgretl1787 That's understandable. Personally, I just love the fire emblem formula so much that I can't help but like it. Like yeah it's generic but it works, at least for me.

One of the first things she says to you after the time skip in Crimson Flower was that she felt like she was losing herself without you to help guide her. That's a nice little tidbit that adds to the reasons why the route the player on is the one that succeeds.

I feel like the symbolism, coupled with the "Oh, I wish I could stay", of Edelgard lagging behind as Dimitri and Claude walk into the shadow makes it clear (If this is how it's meant to be interpreted) that Dimitri and Claude were already in darkness before part 2. Dimitri was insane from the very beginning of the game, he was obsessive and paranoid, with only a calm surface until the Flame Emperor is unmasked. Claude is scheming from the first word out of his mouth, he's already thinking of the future and I can't really see him truly enjoying or cherishing his time at the academy. He never seems to genuinely smile, even Sothis points this out in the very first conversation with him. In contrast, Edelgard doesn't want to do what she feels she must. She wants to cherish the time she has in Garreg Mach, even though she's being objective-oriented on the surface and her actions are taking the future into account, you can tell she wants to enjoy what's left of her time there, whether she has time to do so or not. I think she's saddened the most by the onset of the war and the (in her eyes) need for bloodshed.
Beautiful, better take screenshots of this before Nintendo nukes this video. I actually came to a similar conclusion about this song and Edelgard, though I didn't look at the other lords
I haven't played verdant wind yet, but edelgard has the best character development of the three lords, by far. hers is really a classic coming-of-age tale, replete with a tragic history, ample motivation to want to change the world, and a heavy emotional burden as she plunges fodlan into war, knowing how many lives it will cost, but steadfast in her decision. the image for the video exemplifies this, too: dimitri and claude walk resolutely ahead, while edelgard looks back, mystified and captivated by something that only she seems to be able to perceive: that the noble/commoner system perpetuated by the church represents thousands of years of corruption and oppression, and that she must do something to change it. they walk into darkness, while she looks toward the light--towards a brighter future for all of fodlan. I fucking adore this game, and I would give just about anything to go back and play crimson flower again for the first time.
@@EternalExodusy fsr edelgard îs the worst written. They tried to make her synpathetic and it only works cuz she îs a female. Edekgard was written horribly and her character tries too hard to be synpathetic and tragic. She îs just a narcissistic Girl, and her fanboys fail to see that.

In my eyes, it seems Azure Moon would be fall as the nights are getting colder and longer, which relates to how over the span of 5 years, Dimitri lost more and more of his well being until when you meet up with him again, he too has just accepted that you have died and are there to haunt him as well. He’s a shell of his former self due to a darkened past. I feel it means that over time he slowly gave into the darkness more and more until eventually he feel so deep that he just shut down. Unable to do anything expect get revenge as that’s what he believed would appease the dead he let rule his life
It's sad that Edelgard, who is arguably the second most important character after Byleth themself, is given the shortest route. The story is ultimately about her, and her attempts to change the world. But for the majority of the 2nd half of the game in 3/4 routes, she's just a name. Even AM only gets 1 conversation with her. No other scenes beyond the fight in Enbarr. She got shafted the most out of all 3 lords, and that makes me sad
It's really because the Empire is in a place of power after the timeskip. Faerghus and Leicester have to deal with internal politics as well as the Empire, while the Church has lost the seat of their power and/or their archbishop. Edelgard mostly just has to deal with Dimitri and Rhea, then she's got the whole continent under her control because Claude ceded to her more willingly. Also, that Dimitri-Rhea double-whammy of final bosses was a lot more impactful than tacking Thales onto the end would be, so it makes sense as far as the pacing and emotional stakes are concerned.
I wouldn't say that, she's also the only lord who is a major character in all the routes. AM only getting one conversation with her makes sense because it's Dimitri's blind obsessive hatred that's carrying him, seeing the actual person would be odd. Claude and the Church's route have her be practically the same character, which admittedly is odd in Claude's route where she wishes she could've been with you when you barely talked. If any route has to be the shortest, it makes sense to be hers since her route wasn't even planned to begin with because she's already an integral part of the game. Though, I do wish her route dealt with TWSITD more
I think there's good reason why Edelgard gets the shortest route, as she's the one to move the gears into motion. In all other routes, you're up against the Empire, it's allies, and TWSITD. Everything Edelgard does inspires and motivates everyone else's actions. So when Byleth sides with her; you're guiding her to victory where she makes use of her current allies, and focuses heavily on the church and it's allies. Sure, we want to see more and enjoy the story alongside the Empire. But that's why Silver Snow and Crimson Flower exist, as its two sides of the same coin. I'd argue Silver Snow and Crimson Flower are strongly together.
@@Polomance862 They could have simply given Crimson Flower 2 more chapters dealing with Those Who Slither in the Dark. Imagine the awesomeness of Hubert and Co. going to Shambhala to finish them off. It is a truly headscratching crime that they never added that in a dlc. I fully believe Edelgard and Crimson Flower are meant to be the true route, so it will always bother me that it was never finished.
If the wind within the songs lyrics is supposed to be symbolic of Claude and his ambitions, then it would make sense why Edelgard would say "As the wind calms my thoughts." And that she's being "carried away by the wind's song." Because Claude and Edelgard are both similar in what their goals and ambitions are, they just took two different ways to get there.
Honestly I really wish Verdant Wind had a different cutscene after the battle of Enbarr, because Claude's combat dialogue with Edelgard is fantastic, especially when you link it with the fact that Claude canonically does not want to kill her and wishes there was a way to end the war peacefully while understanding that's not feasible. It should have gotten a cutscene with Claude and Byleth either promising a dying Edelgard that they will change things for the better or even just a snippet in the cutscene that plays there showing Claude and Byleth looking remorseful after the deed is done.
Crimson flower- no edelgard got it bad on a whole, they proorly explained her reason for what and why she did what she did and it didn't help that most objectively negative things that happened are connected to her, unlike rhea in which everything bad she's done is basically off screen or alluded too so she doesn't seem that bad. I'm not saying she is but it was kinda bad when i came to "balancing" the pros and cons of helping either one
Ive always made that connection too because Claude is often referred to the verdant wind metaphorically while the blue moonlight or Azure moon is Dimitri. Edelgard is a red rose or a crimson flower while byleth is the Sun. I think its says a lot about their chracters, roses are attracted to the sun and can't live without them, just like Edelagrd cant win the war without Byleth. The moon isnt visible in the light even though it's still there, it only shows its true light when in the darkness but people arent awake to focus on it for long. Just like how Dimitri hides his true self from byleth and his classmates until he snaps, only to be guided back to the light by Byleth. The Wind is an independent force, it blows in the direction it wants to with determination, however without light, no one will be there to see the winds accomplishments. Just like how Claude always has a plan but lacks the strength to pull through without Byleth. And I know, I'm probaly over thinking it but this is fun for me.
there is a video showing how it does apply to all of them, I can't remember all the points but one of them was how "my blackened heart, scorched by flames, a force I can't run from" makes more sense for Dimitri because of the Tragedy of Duscur
@@scorpain On the other hand, Edelgard has a Crest of Flames, literally on her heart, which makes "my blackened heart, scorched by flames, a force I can't run from" also fit her as well
In Edelgard and Dorothea's paired ending, Dorothea actually does make an opera about the war. Edelgard initially opposes the idea, but she eventually allows it. However, she doesn't play as herself; Dorothea does the role of Edelgard.
i love that one dorothea explore dialogue where she talk about an opera about edelgard's war and she says "i wonder if there'll be romantic tension between you and edelgard's characters"
Just imagine, after the Byleth Edelgard S support Dorothea makes a play about the war and at the end of it she plays Edelgard but over dramatizes the last scene (the one where she cries tears of joy when realizing Byleth is alive) Dorothea(playing Edelgard): Oh my beloved, hows't I've feared that you passed in the world beyond! *starts bawling her eyes out *Edelgard stands up, face red of embarrassment Edelgard:W-wait! T-thats not how it happened! *Byleth looks over play poster again Byleth: oh, so this where the romance genre comes in. Edelgard: dammit Dorothea...
You play the game, and realize just how heavy this song is. You teach all these kids, and see their progress closely, only for them to ultimately follow their own paths, which inevitably ends with them killing each other.
Oh wow. Like many here I never realized that edge of dawn was a sad song about Edelgard. I always had trouble connecting it to Byleth but this makes so much more sense. Honestly I think that Edelgard is the stories REAL main character. Considering how much hinges on her and what she sets out to do.

5 years ago, FE3H launched worldwide, and for someone newly introduced to the series, I was mind blown by Three Houses and the routes. I was not expecting so many things to happen and imo, I believe it’s one of the best and in my top 3 alongside echos & radiance. Three Houses will always have a special place in my heart and will always be my top 3.
A perspective I've had for 3 Houses is that it isn't a story about Byleth...What I mean to say is that despite Byleth being the "Main Protagonist" who we follow, the game we play isn't her story. It's Edelgard's. She's such a tragic character who I think gets put into the Evil camp way more than she deserves. Let me explain my viewpoint. Edelgard's childhood was ripped away from her violently, forced to live in a rat-infested hellhole, being experimented upon and having to hear the screams and cries of her siblings all the while. Hell on Earth for who knows how long. She was forced to watch each and every one of them die, dropping like flies due to the experimentations that the Agarthans were doing on her, expecting herself to meet the same fate. She suffered, and survived a terrible ordeal for a purpose that she couldn't truly understand at the time since she was so young. But here she was, standing at the end of the tunnel, the result of what would be considered a miracle of medical science in the normal world but to the Agarthans was just a successful beta test. She wasn't congratulated, comforted, offered explanations for anything. She was expected to keep her composure as the future Adrestian Emperor and bear it like a good child, and had nothing to show for it but dozens of scars, stark-white hair, and a lifespan now measured in Years instead of Decades. Only later would she learn the true meaning of why she endured what she did. Corruption in high places, schemes and plots in the name of a grand revenge plan by a misguided group of exiles, and the overall power that Crests bestowed upon those who possessed them. She detested it all, the corruption that allowed her to undergo such horrors, the value placed in crest that was the ultimate reason WHY she underwent what she did, and the notion that she wasn't the first and wouldn't be the last. She was merely a stepping stone in a much larger plan, a plan her family was involved in to some capacity. Family, in every sense of the word, meant nothing to her after the years under the Imperial Castle. The Hresvelg name now meant nothing to Edelgard other than a reminder of her pain and the promise that one day, she'd have the power to get even. For years, she planned. She plotted her own schemes, built an intricate web of necessary evils, created a persona with which to do all of this, and still acted like the noble Imperial Princess she was expected to be. Her time at the Officer's Academy was the last step...Assess the Knights of Seiros and do whatever she could to strip them of their power quickly and easily, because once she pulled that trigger she couldn't go back. She was ready for whatever consequences it had. Whatever bloodshed happened due to her actions, it would only solidify the foundations of the future she dreamed of, and she knew that any and all sacrifices made would be done so in the name of re-shaping the world into a better place. She knew full well that innocents would die, she knew full well what it would do to the Empire, and she was fully aware of the consequences of failure on her part. However, she didn't care for any of that. Like the Agarthans before her, she viewed herself as a mere stepping stone to a Brighter Future, the conduit through which the corruption in the Empire and the overzealous hypocrisy of the Church would be annihilated...for Humanity to be truly free. She was willing to be cold, ruthless, contented to her role and resigned to the fate that relationships, personal or otherwise, were simply an impossibility for her. Fodlan, at that point, needed to be steered back on course, and that wouldn't be done through kind words and gentle nature; it would have to be done by placing a cold, uncaring boot on its neck and ripping out its heart to let it be reborn. Edelgard was fully prepared to be that boot. Until Byleth came along. Finally, here was someone that not only could accelerate her plans, but someone who knew nothing of her. Someone who didn't treat her as royalty, who knew nothing of her past, her plans, her future, anything like that. Byleth was the first person ever to treat her like an equal. More importantly, as a Person. That's why she became so attached to Byleth, because she knew that despite it all, no matter if the world lost their faith in her, there would always be someone there to watch her back. In a different way than Hubert, who treated her every word as if it were law, Byleth kept Edelgard grounded, gave her hope for a future she could participate in, a future she could live, and at the end of the day, that's what they did. Crimson Flower will always be the Canonical route to me. You can't convince me otherwise.
I quite agree. I'm pleased I undertook the house quest lines in the order that I did. Dmitri's first, from his perspective Edelgard is pure evil to be eradicated. Then Claude. Then Edelgard. Her's was by far the most compelling quest. Definitely felt like you were fighting for a cause in that one. By that time, I'd figured out how to get all the other students to my side, so when you get to Dimitri all he has left are faithful Dedue and his seething rage in all that rain. What a marvellous game. The sequel was a real let down, because this was such a hard act to follow.

It is probably a reference to the ending cutscene of Azure Moon, where Dimitri and Byleth walk out the door into a brightly cheering audience while solemnly leaving Edelgard’s deceased body behind. The cruel irony is that Dimitri did reach for her hand, only for her to try and stab him.
Even though Byleth was the obvious choice to have as a fire emblem representative, a part of me really wanted Edelgard to be a playable character in smash. But regardless I’m happy that Byleth got in!
Same, but there is a version of female Byleth with Edelgard's colours. Byleth also has her relic axe so she is sort of playable. This Byleth seem to use all house leaders relics so Byleth in smash is like a blend of all of them
@@tomasds1 I actually think the character of Byleth in smash managed to pay great tribute to all the house leaders and to Three Houses as a whole. This is an absolutely fantastic character song for Edelgard: She doesn't want to do the things she does in the game, but she feels she is forced to do because that is what she see as right. In her route she is the great hero, and in everyone elses she is the great villain
hard agree. they did a disservice to her by having CF end so abruptly. oh, rhea's dead, fodlan is united, she marries byleth, and everyone lives happily ever after... really? that's the ending? disappointing. she's the best character in the game.

@@tysonfontanez Old comment but thinking about it, Crimson Flower was most likely never actually going to be a playable route until later into development. My reasons for thinking this are: -CF is the only route with multiple paths -The main theme of the game paints Edelgard as a tragic character with no way to escape her fate, which CF directly goes against -CF is the shortest route with a VERY abrupt ending -The route itself doesn't seem super well planned out story-wise You could even point out Edelgard's class as being the worst in the game out of the three lords, and probably some other details. Regardless, I think Edelgard was always going to be the tragic "bad guy" of the game, but the devs probably knew that a lot of players would want to side with Edelgard (as we saw when the first few months after 3H came out, the Black Eagles was the most popular house by far)

All three of the leaders have such amazing stories and character arcs. This song practically captures the game perfectly since it is from the POV of the girl ignited the sparks, setting everything into motion. I personally love Edelgard's character, but I don't agree with her decisions and actions. The saddest part of Edelgard's story is that there are other people in this game striving to reach the same/similar outcome but through other methods instead of a bloody war. If only she had opened up more and realized that there wasn't only one path to the future she longed to see. (This is just my opinion that for some reason I really wanted to share 😂)

You know when you make a villain that people agree with that you’ve succeeded. Edelgard might be one of my favorite “villains” ever. I love how people can have such different opinions on her, and there’s no clear answer to whether she was right or wrong. Also, the symbolism of Edelgard looking towards the light while the others walk on is awesome. She’s looking to a new alternative of change, and debatably goodness (represented by light). The others continue in the darkness, serving a corrupt church where they’re in the dark about it’s motives.
Error 404 Also if you look closely, the other two’s feet are slightly out in the sunlight. Kinda like saying that they see a problem, but aren’t acting on it, and are just walking on
@@adamnguyen4439 I think that is Edelgard views on them. I've play through their route and they (especially Claude) aren't ignorant to the problems in the world, but they haven't seen what Edelgard has seen. Like the full horror of the seal system.
In this video, the bottom half of the full picture got cut off. However, if you look at the full picture, she is actually also looking at what seems to be an Eagle in the sky, hence “Black Eagles” as the animal is representative of having freedom and looking towards the future, even if Edelgard is afraid of the edge of dawn.
@@ForrestFox626 "the end justify the means" this is what edelgard cling on. She doesn't care how, as long as she can achieve it. I agree maybe she already experience the horror of crest system. But I believe as decent human being, claude method is far better. Both of them didn't like the idea of how crest "separate" people, even some people like edel & lysithea forced to have a crest bt undergo a horror process. Claude method is wether people have crest or not, they are the same, but without erasing the crest itself. So people with crest will accept people without crest, vice versa. On the other hand, edel try to erase the existence of crest (implicitly means that all people should never have any crest), means she cant accept diversity at all.
For me some of the most powerful lines are the ones from the first verse: "oh I wish I could stay/ here in cherished halls, in peaceful days/ I fear the edge of dawn knowing time betrays" It describes Edelgard wanting to stay with all of her friends in school, before war, before anything, just the joy of having everyone together and the comfort of peace. She wishes she could stay there forever, but she knows she can't and that makes her dread the future, but she feels she can't just walk away from it. It captures the idea of escapism, how we really just wish we could escape from our problems and just enjoy life with people we love. Even when we know we are just trying to run away from our problems, even then we still just want to stay in our peaceful place. But "time betrays", time just won't stop no matter how much we want it to, and eventually we are no longer able to enjoy our escapism. And so she wishes that she could stay in her academy days with all of her friends. But she knows what's coming; she "fears the edge of dawn", she knows time won't wait for her. And the same could be said for the other lords, too. I'm sure both Dimitri and Claude also wished they could have stayed longer in the academy among all their friends, in "cherished halls, in peaceful days", especially looking back and reminiscing after the war and time skip. It's such a beautiful song!
I decided to come back to this song, one that i literally played nonstop during quarentine as I was playing and grinding on fe3h, because I realized how hard this song hits as a high school senior. Of course, this was for personal reasons but omg, when you take the lyrics in a way of your childhood dwindling away, its so bittersweet.
I just finished crimson flower too! I found it so much better than azure moon, honestly, even though AM was my first playthrough of this game. edelgard is an incredible character, way better developed than dimitri.
I just finished Crimson Flower route. I reached for her hand, and soared away. It was honestly rather beautiful that this didn't play over the credits.
I really love how people still try to apply all the lord's perspective in this song, when Edelgard's name is literally the song title. Fire Emblem fans learn how to read challenge: failed for the 29382937th time!
So many people think Claude's route would've achieved what Edelgard wanted to achieve without the bloodshed. They are wrong. Here's my essay in defense of Edelgard: - The Crests and system of nobility are retained in Claude's ending and thus the caste system of Fodlan and social inequality caused by them are unchanged. Claude's ending did not create a truly meritocratic society like Edelgard's did (where commoners could rise to positions of government) - The influence of the Church is not eradicated in Claude's ending whereas Edelgard achieved full separation of the Church and State. That is not to say that she banned the faith as she is says when facing Rhea "I've only made an enemy of the Church, not of the faith." Merely that the Church is kept away from positions of government and prevented from shoving their fake dogma down everyone's throats - It's not as if Edelgard wanted there to be bloodshed. As is stated in her route she distributed a manifesto outlining her beliefs to "every lord on Fodlan," and gave them the chance to side against the Church. If Claude really held similar beliefs to Edelgard he would've agreed with the manifesto and aided Edelgard or at the very least tried to negotiate with her when he became leader of the Alliance. Yet he actively chooses to fight against the Empire in his route thus showing that he does not share Edelgard's beliefs - Edelgard's lifespan was cut immensely short due the two Crests she got from being experimented on. After all the trauma she went through, taking direct action against the Church was the most assured way to realise her vision rather than twiddling her thumbs negotiating with the other lords on something that may or may not eventuate, not to mention Those Who Slither in The Dark who were pointing a dagger to her head. It was also the quickest way which insured that change could be realised in her shortened lifespan - Edelgard abdicates after ruling for a while and chooses a worthy successor while it is not stated that Dimitri or Claude did such a thing - While Claude did open up Fodlan to the outside world, thus ending racism, as I mentioned before he did not reform Fodlan into a meritocratic society. Also, it's not like Edelgard was opposed to such ideals. She states in her paralogue that she wanted a peace treaty with Almyra so that Fodlan could have good relations between them and wished for respect for the different cultures and beliefs the two nations have. - Edelgard's route is the only route in which humanity is freed from the brainwashing and control of immortal lizard 'people.' Also there's no such thing as 'racism against dragons.' The Nabateans are not human and effectively conquered and enslaved a foreign continent which they were not originally from. - If it wasn't for Edelgard doing what she did Claude and Dimitri would never have achieved anything. They would've just been rulers whose names would fade into the annals of history. It was because of Edelgard that Claude was able to open Fodlan to the outside world in Verdant Wind, Dimitri was able to unify Fodlan in Azure Moon and that Rhea was able to admit fault in Silver Snow. Despite her actions, much good did come of it regardless of the route taken, as all characters took advantage of the war. Edelgard is in many ways the main character of the story.
While I adore Claude and agree with him in many ways, his dream was accomplished BECAUSE of the war. Same with Dimitri. In the end their resistances were petty, so many lives would be saved if they just united as one nation. Whichever route you pick the end result is the same: Fodlan becomes united. People like Dimitri talk about chivalry yet still want to fight back even though it doesn't mean much in the end.
@@cantthinksleepdeprived Expecting them to roll over and kneel to imperial rule is just plain ridiculous. Yes, Fodlan benefits from being united. There is no question of that. Whether led by the empire in CF, kingdom in AM, or Byleth in VW/SS, a united Fodlan is always better. But regardless if she had good intentions, Edelgard still started an unprovoked war, and willingly killed thousands by doing so. Claude and Dimitri have every right to defend their people and lands from a conqueror, which is what Edelgard was.
@@gamingguy1010 Well I understand that, but the end result of a united fodlan stay the same. Edelgard asked every noble to side with her but they all refused at the beginning which led to the war. Some issues stayed the same in fodlan for thousands of years and so Edelgard knew she had to conquer or unite because the church, the main issue, was in the center of Fodlan so she couldn't normally control it
Luka Alfy She never tried to get nobles to side with her until after the war started. She tried to have both Claude and Dimitri assassinated before the conflict ever even began. She might’ve had good intentions, but Edelgard was shaped by her trauma and started a war that truly didn’t need to be started, and she in fact distracted Fodlan from the real threat, TWSITD. Yes, Rhea was a sycophantic liar and the church was hiding the truth and helping to perpetuate the corrupt system. You can lay some blame on Rhea for how Fodlan turned out because she did nothing to stop the corrupt system. But asides from being liars, almost all of Edelgards other accusations against the church are baseless. And there is no justification for her attacking Faerghus or the Leicester alliance when they weren’t even involved in the conflict in the first place.
@@anirvmandava908 In order to do that Claude would still need to take advantage of the war Edelgard started to unify Fodlan, so not really 'peaceful.' Without the war he would've never been able to achieve anything.
The song is, of course, about Edelgard's emotions and story, but I imagine the actual songwriter and performer is Dorothea who dedicated this tribute to her after the war. My theory is reinforced by their support conversations together.
This song hits so hard. Just hearing Edelgards struggle between giving in to the comforting atmosphere of the Acedemy and healing and knowing that she can't live a normal live with her body and trauma and trying to make things right so the things that happened to her and her family cannot happen to anyone else again. The line "and the lie upon my lips, I let it go" hits especially hard, because up to that point it sounds like Byleth might break through to her and ease her suffering, only for her to put that facade back and isolate herself.
Love how this is both a song that could apply to Edlegaard and Rhea, even though it properly and more closely corresponds to Edlegaard. They are truly foils in many ways, which is unique for a story like this where the villain is usually the foil for the main character.
Probably gonna be buried and give the comments of "impossible" (which I agree with) but: Fire Emblem Three Houses Golden Ending in the style of AI: The Somnium Files with this song in the background. As for my interpretation: As the Ashen Wolf comes out of hiding from their cave, they howl to the clear Azure Moon... The Silver Snow falls, covering the lands, and as the Verdant Wind blows the snow away... Only then, will the Crimson Flower bloom under the light of those who helped it.
Interestingly enough, the AM ending actually has Dimitri improving foreign relations in the credits along with other stuff that Edelgard does, and fails to do. They don’t find the CEO nemesis though, but did best TWSITD without realizing it
Well, edelgards focus was ending in-nation classism. Claude only looks to that as an afterthought cause Hubert sent that note. In that respect, i think edelgards focus was micro, while claudes was macro.
Edelgard was so clearly the main lord in my eyes and yet her route was by far the shortest. I am on my next playthrough with a new house though it pained me to turn down Edelgard's request to join her house.
SoLuna that teared me up...but if you think positive...at least Dimitri and Edelgard are their with lovers and they could’ve gotten a happy ending if the war didn’t start
It's not even funny how much I love this game. Everything from the soundtrack to the story to the gameplay is effortlessly incredible, at least to me, and I am so so so very glad for my brother's part in helping me find this game. This song is just one of the best parts. It perfectly sums up Edelgard's character and journey throughout the game, and is sung beautifully. Crossing my fingers that FE:E will be just as good as 3H, because this game is amazing.
Looking through these comments I now realise how well thought out the imagery of this game is. This is what games should stride for and I dont think there's enough of them. These may help people realise who they truly are and I could not admire that enough. Huge props to Nintendo for this true masterpiece
People really be writing the Bible called "In defense of Edelgard" bruh They're all good leaders, whatever ending you get is going to be the best ending for Fódlan. It depends on perspective. I personally agree with Claude's views more but others agree more with El's or Dimitri's. Nothing wrong with that
This is a high quality comment. I personally agree more with Dimitri, but they are all legendary leaders and visionaries, and Edelgard makes me cry whenever I choose a route that isn't CF and get the result of my choices.
In the end its all just a matter of perspective. even after playing all the other routes I still believe edelgard was the one who chose the best course of action even if it was the most bloody, but I can understand why you would agree with one of the other lord

Reach for my hand,
I'll soar away
Into the dawn,
Oh, I wish I could stay
Here in cherished halls,
In peaceful days
I fear the edge of dawn,
Knowing time betrays
Faint lights pass through colored glass,
In this beloved place
Silver shines, the world dines,
A smile on each face
As joy surrounds, comfort abounds,
And I can feel I'm breaking free
For just this moment lost in time,
I am finally me
Yet still I hide,
Behind this mask that I have become
My blackened heart,
Scorched by flames, a force I can't run from
I look to you
Like a red rose
Seeking the sun
No matter where it goes
I long to stay,
Where the light dwells
To guard against the cold
That I know so well
As the rain falls on the path
I chase your shadow
I don't feel a single drop,
Or the ground below
Then you turn to me and I
Stop before I know
And the lie upon my lips
I let it go
Cross my heart
Making vows I know will be betrayed
A sad girl's pleas
Live only for a breath and then they fade
My dearest wish
Is that you’ll know
These tender thoughts
That only seem to grow
They are as snow
Melting away
Yet seeking your warm
If only for a day
The blue moonlight
Cuts across our sight
As pure and clear as a ringing bell
Reaching for us in the night
As the wind calms my thoughts,
I held strong on this terrace
I feel at peace,
Carried away by the wind's song
Open the door
And walk away
Never give in
To the call of yesterday
Memories that made
Those days sublime
These ruined halls entomb
Stolen time
Reach for my hand
I'll soar away
Into the dawn
Oh, I wish I could stay
Here in cherished halls
In peaceful days
I fear the edge of dawn
Knowing time betrays
Yet seeking your warm
Yet seeking your warmth

@@heyitzmae Yup, now I see why she should have went to Smash instead of Byleth
@@sephikong8323 oh god
And a little teacher notice me to the mix.
Something I want to note,
1. Edelgard is the flower as she requires byleth to truly flourish and bloom, whereas in the other routes she's cold and distant hiding her emotions and true feelings towards the world like a bud which has yet to bloom.
2. Dimitri is the moon and is a reflection of byleth's light, which could be a reference to how he require byleth the most and without it he's stuck in the eternal darkness of the night
3. Claude is the wind, since he's the needs byleth's aid the least( since it's possible that he survived every route) he simply Carries byleth's warmth and spreading his message(gives aid to byleth in ss and in am after you save derdriu)
That’s a really good analogy dude 🤯
Coom Fish I think Rhea is the flower instead - while it is Edelgard that’s the center of the route, flowers are Rhea’s theme - Funeral of Flowers is Rhea’s song, and she’s the one that wears flowers in her outfit.
Snow also appears to be Byleth, not Rhea - they’re the center of the story and are associated with the snow’s blankness.

E yup just makes the song cool, and sad

Unable to do anything expect get revenge as that’s what he believed would appease the dead he let rule his life
Something something wolves and shit
It's sad that Edelgard, who is arguably the second most important character after Byleth themself, is given the shortest route. The story is ultimately about her, and her attempts to change the world. But for the majority of the 2nd half of the game in 3/4 routes, she's just a name. Even AM only gets 1 conversation with her. No other scenes beyond the fight in Enbarr. She got shafted the most out of all 3 lords, and that makes me sad
FE3H was sadly rushed.
@@cscotch1127 verdant wind really got the short end of the stick by being copied from silver snow. that cutscene with edelgard made no sense
@@arsehe1929 Yeah. The Silver Snow cutscene really should not have been reused.
“Edge of Dawn is about all the lords” meanwhile 70% of it is all about Edelgard, lady of Hresvelg is a much more fitting title if you ask me xd
I actually wanted to rewrite it from dimitris perspective cuz dimitris my favorite lord

I like to think, that if Dorothea actually made an opera about the war, Edelgard would play as herself and sing this song to Byleth 😄
@@matthewmuir8884 No, she has Dorothea play herself, as she says "There wouldn't be the story of Edelgard without Dorothea".
Just imagine, after the Byleth Edelgard S support Dorothea makes a play about the war and at the end of it she plays Edelgard but over dramatizes the last scene (the one where she cries tears of joy when realizing Byleth is alive)
Dorothea(playing Edelgard): Oh my beloved, hows't I've feared that you passed in the world beyond!
*starts bawling her eyes out
*Edelgard stands up, face red of embarrassment

It is even deeper than that.
This is literally Edelgard describing her experiences and motivations and emotions throughout the game.
the end credits version is even more depressing. "hold tight to what i love, keep cruel fate at bay" is so sad when you understand edelgard's trauma

@@tysonfontanez Old comment but thinking about it, Crimson Flower was most likely never actually going to be a playable route until later into development. My reasons for thinking this are:
-CF is the only route with multiple paths
-The main theme of the game paints Edelgard as a tragic character with no way to escape her fate, which CF directly goes against
-CF is the shortest route with a VERY abrupt ending
-The route itself doesn't seem super well planned out story-wise
You could even point out Edelgard's class as being the worst in the game out of the three lords, and probably some other details. Regardless, I think Edelgard was always going to be the tragic "bad guy" of the game, but the devs probably knew that a lot of players would want to side with Edelgard (as we saw when the first few months after 3H came out, the Black Eagles was the most popular house by far)

Still can't say I think her methods are sane.
"Never give in to the call of yesterday" always makes me tear up and I'm not sure why
For me, "For just this moment lost in time, I am finally me" gives me shivers every time
For me some of the most powerful lines are the ones from the first verse: "oh I wish I could stay/ here in cherished halls, in peaceful days/ I fear the edge of dawn knowing time betrays"
It describes Edelgard wanting to stay with all of her friends in school, before war, before anything, just the joy of having everyone together and the comfort of peace.
Love that the lyrics have a red flower, a blue moon, a calm wind, and snow. So perfect.
I’m the same
absolutely pain her route is the shortest she deserves so much more.
As far as big class reunions go, this has gotta be the best in history. 🦅🦁🦌🐺
Yknow, as a high school senior who's utterly terrified of graduating, this song hits different 🥲
Wait till you become a senior in college, it’ll hit different too 😂💯
Could be worse. I am about to fail at graduating and may have to repeat a year, I suck.
Just don't start WWIII for us yeah?
I just finished the Crimson Flower route on this game and let me tell you, I feel on top of the world right now! Sing away my emperor!
I just finished crimson flower too! I found it so much better than azure moon, honestly, even though AM was my first playthrough of this game. edelgard is an incredible character, way better developed than dimitri.
@@EternalExodus wow, this comment really shows how perspective matters. it was the exact opposite for me lol
I've been more than touched by the edge of dawn .Thank you.
Just S Supported Edelgard earlier today, nice
Currently playing through crimson flower the s support is ready now I just need to finish the route
... I wasn't expecting THIS kind of music in a FE game, but you ain't gonna hear *me* complain about it.
I just finished Crimson Flower route.
I reached for her hand, and soared away. It was honestly rather beautiful that this didn't play over the credits.
great job!
I wish this was the credits theme (and I thought it was)
@@baterraoraa4846 it is on every route except cf because of what the song symbolizes. The song symbolizes El not reaching her goals. She did in cf.
@@baterraoraa4846 Only the instrumentation was the credits theme; the lyrics don't play in the Crimson Flower route.
Ah my bad
The symbolism of Edel in the light with Dimitri and Claude in the dark is so good imao
It is a medieval spotlight.
I really love how people still try to apply all the lord's perspective in this song, when Edelgard's name is literally the song title.
Fire Emblem fans learn how to read challenge: failed for the 29382937th time!
This music makes me want to cry almost as much as when I finished the Blue Lions route.
Here after Byleth being announced for smash
Nice pfp. I'm having PTSD right now. Thanks!
Yuuki aka Dpadkid thanks...

Edelgard: can you guys NOT hear that?
The salt is real lmao. Can't wait wait to play f!Byleth with Edelgard alt

@@justblaze1656 ah I see you're a fellow deer of culture as well
So many people think Claude's route would've achieved what Edelgard wanted to achieve without the bloodshed. They are wrong. Here's my essay in defense of Edelgard:
- The Crests and system of nobility are retained in Claude's ending and thus the caste system of Fodlan and social inequality caused by them are unchanged. Claude's ending did not create a truly meritocratic society like Edelgard's did (where commoners could rise to positions of government)
- The influence of the Church is not eradicated in Claude's ending whereas Edelgard achieved full separation of the Church and State. That is not to say that she banned the faith as she is says when facing Rhea "I've only made an enemy of the Church, not of the faith." Merely that the Church is kept away from positions of government and prevented from shoving their fake dogma down everyone's throats
- It's not as if Edelgard wanted there to be bloodshed. Yet he actively chooses to fight against the Empire in his route thus showing that he does not share Edelgard's beliefs
- Edelgard's lifespan was cut immensely short due the two Crests she got from being experimented on. After all the trauma she went through, taking direct action against the Church was the most assured way to realise her vision rather than twiddling her thumbs negotiating with the other lords on something that may or may not eventuate, not to mention Those Who Slither in The Dark who were pointing a dagger to her head. It was also the quickest way which insured that change could be realised in her shortened lifespan
- Edelgard abdicates after ruling for a while and chooses a worthy successor while it is not stated that Dimitri or Claude did such a thing
- While Claude did open up Fodlan to the outside world, thus ending racism, as I mentioned before he did not reform Fodlan into a meritocratic society.
Shit, good point.
Probably gonna be buried and give the comments of "impossible" (which I agree with) but:
Fire Emblem Three Houses Golden Ending in the style of AI: The Somnium Files with this song in the background.
As for my interpretation:
As the Ashen Wolf comes out of hiding from their cave, they howl to the clear Azure Moon... The Silver Snow falls, covering the lands, and as the Verdant Wind blows the snow away... Only then, will the Crimson Flower bloom under the light of those who helped it.
I’m imagining Byleth is wearing an “Edelgard Number 1 Fan” shirt.
Imagine having a route where you don't end racism

Interestingly enough, the AM ending actually has Dimitri improving foreign relations in the credits along with other stuff that Edelgard does, and fails to do. They don’t find the CEO nemesis though, but did best TWSITD without realizing it
@@cyanblue7749 That's why CHADmitri is the best.
Chadmitri, but failed in many regards? 🤔
Rixstarian perhaps, but so did the others, no side truly won or lost, just one side actually did what you said only Claude did
Well, edelgards focus was ending in-nation classism. Claude only looks to that as an afterthought cause Hubert sent that note. In that respect, i think edelgards focus was micro, while claudes was macro.
3 years later and this song still makes me so sad every time I hear it
Edelgard was so clearly the main lord in my eyes and yet her route was by far the shortest.
I am on my next playthrough with a new house though it pained me to turn down Edelgard's request to join her house.

That's a W. Ain't nothin gonna keep you down
Petition for another fire emblem character. It would be all the house leaders, kinda like pokemon trainer.
That would've been cool, especially if Nintendo hadn't made Byleth nick all their signature weapons.
Looking through these comments I now realise how well thought out the imagery of this game is. This is what games should stride for and I dont think there's enough of them. These may help people realise who they truly are and I could not admire that enough. Huge props to Nintendo for this true masterpiece
People really be writing the Bible called "In defense of Edelgard" bruh
They're all good leaders, whatever ending you get is going to be the best ending for Fódlan.
@why tho? I agree edelgard definitely left Fodlan in the best position and at least Claude stood for something dimitri was just against edelgard
@why tho? B...but... [insert war criminal here] is the best uwu wholesome war criminal.
