I’m not a drummer but my son was. He never played professionally but was in local bands and learned by ear. He just knew what to play. Eventually he got into more of the technical side of things with editing and mastering songs for no pay just to get the word out. Unfortunately he passed away but it was fun to talk with him about music and drums. He fascinated me. I only wish that he had been able to make his music dreams come true. I think he would have been like Chad, just being able to pick up the sticks and play. I love to watch and listen to your assessments of drummers. I may not always understand the technical terms but just to watch drummers play is fascinating to me.

Yeah. Think that often gets overlooked about this performance. If he was just playing by ear to what he is listening to, he'd not be able to set anything up in advance - which he clearly does. So basically what he has to do is think some seconds in advance about what will be coming up judging from the song structure etc. That can be best noticed close to the end, where he seems to have been expecting something different (less quit ending). On all the other parts however he's mostly correct with what he is assuming to come up.

    • @tiapesi2738
      @tiapesi2738 7 месяцев назад +1

except if he would have played tool and went in, he couldn't. Predictable musicstructure is often but not always a thing. Let's stay in the Emo/Punk Genre: Greenday's 'Jesus of Suburbia' also vreaks those rules. Which in my opinion is such a beautifull thing when it happenes. But you are absolutely right. Most songst follow a certain structure, only the tempo changes a pop songg lets take fourth and a typical emo/punk song in threes. So, usually the instinct doesn't lead you astray, but it could. Is what I want to say here. What is more important to highlight in Chad's performance here anf even more important (because every musicion knows how a simple song is construction) is how beautiffully he afampts in a change he didn't see coming. He does it with such easy that it neatly blends seemlessly and in my opinion that id what makes this pergormance absolutely SPECTACULAR!

Many of the Drumeo clips the guest drummer listens to a complete (or nearly complete) pass of the song. They often make notes and map out verses and chorus, builds and dips and bridges....etc. Chad listened and jumped in playing literally a few bars into the first pass and just improvised in real time. Even though this isn't an especially complicated song, the improvisation is excellent - he did such an amazing job!

He's amazing, and here's what people don't understand. He didn't listen to "15 seconds" and then do this, he listened to JUST THE SONG WITH NO DRUMS! His entire playing was built on his experience of how he would personally play it. So anything he missed is because he has never heard the song before and had no frame of reference for the drum parts.

Chad is one of the most underrated players out there...The Chili Peppers are a funk band but Chad is a metal trained drummer and he gives the RHCP those hard hitting backbeats and pocket for days ✌️🤘🧐

Chad Smith has a video talking about ghosting the bass being his style haha so your bang on, it’s on drumeo. And he plays with his whole body and I think that’s part of it, I even see his face playing drum and I love it. Saw the chilli peppers on their stadium Arcadian tour and they did all their old hits and the whole new album with a massive oncore. They put on an epic show and each one of them is epic in their own right.

This is still one of my favourite viral videos of last year, the way Chad Smith absolutely smashes the assignment!
I am coming at this not from a drummers perspective, but as someone who enjoys making Drum and Bass, one thing that we do when making drums is fairly prolific use of ghost hits (if you're not making something that's minimal and super stripped back). From the electronic quantised side of things, it gives the perception of human swing and velocity changes for a more natural and human flow to what can easily be a very robotic sounding drum line.
Also, when recording a band in a studio, unless you're just using overheads (which causes its own issue), surely feathering the kick drum is fine because drums are isolated with their own mics?
Idk, ghost notes are sick, and it confuses me that it's not commonplace.

Along the ghost note line: I’m a bassist and although my job is to lay down the bottom alongside the drummer, I too ghost note on the bass when playing with a drummer that does it as well. It adds so much fun and texture to the song.

This video series highlights how good many musicians are, especially studio musicians. To be able to write parts and play them on the fly, under pressure, is a mark of exceedingly high skill. My hat is off to anyone who does this sort of thing for a living. Obviously Chad is not a studio drummer, but he has the first required skill, he listens well. Then he has the second required skill, he can improvise. Kudos!

Until you are sponsored or endorsed by drumming companies, breaking cymbals and heads from hitting too hard becomes very expensive.

ive watched the video loads of time, still brings goosebumps to see an absolute master for their craft smashing it. his musical ear, anticipation and flexibility is amazing. watching it now you can see how he leaves the tiniest bits of space, a moment of delay to see where the song goes and then jump on it, only ever makes it more incredible to play blind and still perform like this... for me RHCP has always been about Flea (as a former bass player) so i never paid much due to Chad but when you think about it, you cant play with a bunch of musicians and fill arenas without being of equal caliber.
seeing other drummers in the series they take a few plays through, they tweak it, polish it and still dont get close the musicality and feel that chad delivered here. nothing taken from them, its an almost impossible job to jump in blind and play perfectly, Chads attitude and just diving in is what shines through. I used to play brass instruments too and could never do Jazz because i couldnt let go of making mistakes and feeling it as i played, which makes my respect for this even greater.

I grew up learning to play drums to hair metal bands and learned to play at around 4 or 5. and in my early teen years I played at church 3 times a week. That will give good experience with songs and fading between songs and doing different versions of the same song , faster or slower. I learned early on to take the nerves and put it into excitement. man did it ever help. But I never took a lesson. my lessons were to watch as many drummers as possible and listen to them and mimic the track to a T. Great video to watch!

Chad is incredible. Also incredible that this guy takes about nerves, stick placement in the hand over the performance that Chad put on??

A local radio station used to have a couple hour segment every week called the "Free Jazz BBQ" sometimes it was killer, sometimes it was random trumpet notes with no one else playing. It's not for everyone, but it's great when everyone gets in the groove together.

After seeing him do that, i now want to learn drums again. I remember there was a neighbor boy at my grandparents and he was like 10 years older than me, at the time I was like 7 and he had a drum set. I remember wanting to learn but he was never home obviously bc he was 17-18 so he was working or hanging out with friends. One time he was home he said he would teach me but he didn’t want anything happening to the set if I were to accidentally break something since it was his dads as well and was very expensive. Since then I’ve always eyeballed a drum set and I would always bounce my legs to the music with the beats. I’m 19yo now so hopefully I can get an electric one since I’m moving into an apartment soon and eventually move to an acoustic one. I don’t want to do it as a job but as a hobby along with art and reading.
