  • SHAPE moved to Belgium on March 30, 1967, after closing its facility in France. In total, it only took six and a half months to construct the main buildings and to declare SHAPE operational that same year. __
Allied Command Operations (ACO), NATO's headquarters for all military plans and operations, is the successor to two historic strategic commands for NATO - Allied Command Europe and Allied Command Atlantic.
ACO is one of The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation's (NATO) two strategic military commands. The other command being Allied Command Transformation ACT in Norfolk, Virginia.
ACO is commanded by the Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) and is responsible for all Alliance military operations. The command headquarters, known as Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe, or SHAPE, is located in Casteau near Mons, Belgium. The mission of ACO and the SACEUR is to contribute to preserving the peace, security and territorial integrity of NATO member nations in its area of responsibility.

I was here in1968 . . . first time at School. Lots of American kids . . . Cinema and Popcorn fights. My father was a Royal Naval officer and his Superior loved Jazz and Thai Sticks. Saw the Moon landings whilst playing with his two white Semoyed dogs. Very cool memories. Thank you all. Bless.

My Dad was U. S. Army Staff Sergeant Doyle Cook. He was stationed at S.H.A.P.E. In 1968. These times growing up overseas as the son of a soldier were the best times of my life. Everyone is gone but me and I wished I had photos of those places back then.

This is an important mini-documentary. I am so glad it was uploaded. Our family lived at SHAPE from 1971- 1976 so we were witnesses to some of those early years. It was an amazing time in our lives and we will forever treasure those years. This summer my wife and I had the privilege to go back and see SHAPE for the first time in 41 years (first time for her.) What an amazing experience, and how wonderful to be able to visit once again for the 50th anniversary.

What a great documentary. I arrived at SHAPE in August 1967 and the paint was still wet on many of the walls. It was a beginning of what for me turned out to be a great adventure lasting until January 1970. I had the honor of being the first soldier to be selected as the Outstanding Soldier of the Quarter for the US HQ Company. I went through several duty assignments while at SHAPE. Each was more challenging than the previous. Being outside a college town as Mons was added another element for a single enlisted man far from home. I doubled down on studying French and this proved to be time well spent as it allowed me to make friends in the community outside of SHAPE. It's been over 50 years but those memories are as fresh as yesterday for me.
