50th Anniversary of NATO in Belgium: The Grass Is Greener

  • In 1967, NATO Headquarters relocated from its Parisian home at Porte Dauphine to Brussels from where it continues to serve the Alliance today. Franz Egger was the Head of NATO Registry Services at the time and saw the transition at first hand. When he first arrived to Brussels, he found himself walking through an unfinished building surrounded by dirt and mud. The site, however, quickly transformed itself as the official inauguration ceremony approached. And when on 16 October 1967 Secretary General Manlio Brosio delivered his opening speech, he was surrounded by giant carpets of fresh, green grass brought over from the Netherlands.
