Someone should make an app. Oh yeah, have you heard of dimmer.exe? It's the shnizz.
In conjunction, use flux.exe. Thereby, you can reduce the blueness and and dim the brightness, thus saving your poor eyes.

This problem had bothered me for days.
Updating the Intel drivers didn't help, but changing to Microsoft Basic Display Adapter solved the problem.

I switched to the basic display adapter, then searched for updated driver software from internet, and it worked...Thx
rolling to the basic adapter isn't a fix - it lets you change your brightness at the cost of your display adapter being trash, which locks you out of a lot of things. You basically have Microsoft office and the internet on basic and that's it

The brightness bar stuff came back but it didn't actually change my brightness levels...

Finally got it to work! If you choose from the list of device drivers you want, don't choose 'Microsoft Basic Display Adapter', instead choose one of the versions that had a date BEFORE the Windows 10 upgrade. It worked for me and now I have control of the brightness level.

Wesley Germann I have a laptop and tried all available drivers from my computer and tried updating them all. It says the best drivers for your device have already been installed for all of them and that there aren't windows updates. It doesn't work.

My display adapter was out of date. Thank you for the help. As I write this the display adapter installed itself and just cut my screen out. After it came back from a black screen, the screen is now on it's brightest setting. Thanks again @Techniqued

I have been updating drivers for two days but nothing happened. The brightness was exteremy high. I was exhausted. But THE FOLLOWING HELPED ME. (I'm Russian and the names of options MAY NOT look like I call them (I don't know how exactly they are called in English) but I hope you understand).
Open Device Manager. Choose Display Adapters. Click on the adapter you see and then click to Update Drivers ---> Choose on your computer ---> Choose from the list on your computer ---> then choose Basic Adapter. The Basic Adapter will be installed. Then open again Device Manager ---> Display Adapters. You will see there recently installed Basic Adapter. Click on it ---> Update Drivers ---> Update AUTOMATICALLY. The update will begin and after that the computer will install the DRIVERS YOU NEED instead of this Basic Driver. For example my computer (Acer) installed 2 needed drivers: 'AMD Radeon HD 8650G + HD 8750M Dual Graphics' and 'AMD Radeon HD 8750M'. Now EVERYTHING WORKS. I hope this helps you. LOVE

Hi, I have just bought a Lenovo IdeaPad with a Windows already on it. But, I have this problem. When I have the adapter connected to the computer. the brightness is OK, but when I want to use it without the adapter (electr.cable), the screen is very dark, so I am unable to use it without the cable. Is that normal/OK? for a new comp? Any advice? thanks, so much

After I clicked update using online resources, the message said, "The best driver software for your device is already installed." So, no updates available or needed, and still I cannot adjust my display brightness. It was working until yesterday when there was a power outage in our neighborhood because a transformer box fuse blew.
my device manager does not have an option called display adapters.I cannot update some files in windows too..!

Thank you! Your methods worked for me! For anyone who still needs clarification. Go to device manager, and switch to the basic microsoft one as shown in the video. Then when it changes. Search for driver updates online and it should say that its installing drivers. It will then install updated drivers for your previously set display adapter and move back to it. Thanks dude!

Who still not finding solution after this video, here is what you probably still need to do :
Right-click start up -> Computer manager -> Device manager -> Monitor, expand it -> right-click "Generic PnP Monitor" -> Click "enable"

Sir, I have a problem in my windows 10 after update my laptop won't sleep when i click on sleep then it wake up after 2-3 sec and in power option only Balanced (recommended) option shows another two options are missing....can you plz suggest me how to solve this problem...
When i roll back to basic display adapter..screen goes too dim...so much that i had to use external torch to make my way through to update it again to intel HD driver.

Well I tried all above solutions, it didnt work but i modified your ways and it worked. First go to Display adapters in Device Manager then go to properties and update driver. Their you select basic microsoft display(if updating latest driver didnt work) and then again update latest driver and it will get update. It worked for me.
Even after updating display drivers brightness issue not resolved. It is changing percentage wise but not remains, suddenly brightness goes low. Please assist.

my laptop only has the default windows driver i followed the steps and it says all drivers are updated still the brightness cant be fixed.
I only get the option to install from basic microsoft intel stuff and I accidentally uninstalled my intel graphics driver and it switched to basic now i can barely do anything to get it back because when i reinstall it my computer crashes and deletes the file completely or it deletes the download then closes my browser.
If your monitor is connected to your graphics card. You should change your display settings through the card app. Not on your pc. Finally figured that out.
I have very strange situation. My old driver, the one provided by the ASUS works fine. It permits me to change brightness. But it is very outdated, so some of programs doesn't run (Perfect Effect 9, f.i.. I emailed them, they said me I need to update my videocard drivers). And if I update the driver, brightness doesn't work. Actually worse, if it reaches below 50% of brightness, display dims completely. It just power offs.
I bought a mouse and it don't work for my pc so i didn't care about it and now i can't find it, do i use this same method to make it work before i buy another mouse that dont work?

Unfortunatly updating the display drivers didn't help, but here's what worked for me:
Update the monitor driver > Browse my computer for driver software > Let me pick from list > Chose Generic PnP Monitor instead of PnP-Monitor (Standard) & Viola !
Finally something that worked for my brightness, but after the brightness was corrected my sound doesn't work. Thanks Microsoft.
it fixed the slider but the brightness is not changing its still full brightness and the brightness is supposedly at 0%... any tips

All of the solution above dont work on me, BUT i already figured how to fix my HP Envy x360 laptop.
1. Go to settings
2. System > Power & battery > Energy recommendations
3. Energy recommendations
You can apply all so that your laptop can save more energy or just apply (set the screen brightness for best energy efficiency)

I just realized these comments are from three and four years ago...this is obviously not a new problem. I also have noticed that the print is smaller on my desktop and my cell phone, and the print on paperwork that comes with a delivery is sometimes so small, you need a magnifying glass to read it. The world has gone crazy and that is an understatement.

For those having issues, download a program DimScreen. It just makes everything darker and more relaxing.

No solution since days of research. Dims when unplugged. I maxed the brighness with function key shortcut, but still super dark. I don`t have brightness slider, or any option in power options other than `Turn off display after` I dont have adaptive brightness option no nothing in Win fucking 10. Troubleshoots finds no nothing.

If, like me, Windows just upgraded and your brightness suddenly stopped functioning, your best bet might be rolling back to a previous version of Windows before the update. Apparently, older laptops and PC are more at risk of errors like loss of brightness control with each Windows update. Anyway, to rollback: Start > Settings > Update & security > Recovery > under Go back to my previous version of Windows 10, click Get started. Your files should be safe but if you've installed any software between the previous version of Windows you're rolling back to and now, you'll probably need to reinstall them afterward.
