The Sony Xperia 5 V is Sony's compact flagship phone for 2023, and between its powerful main camera and massive battery, it should be a fantastic pro-grade smartphone for shoots, especially when you factor in its external monitor support. But I'm not sold on some aspects of the phone - specifically, the 128GB storage and clunkier styling.
Here are the photo samples showcased in the review:

We need Sony to keep producing phones more than ever since we lost LG & HTC To give us an alternative to Samsung & Apple...... yes Im aware we have Chinese alternatives but I wouldn't feel comfortable owning one

    • @yabaoz

Yes true, but if Sony has also to leave the phone market then it's their fault. They have the customers but Sony fails to deliver. Look at those bezels. OOOMMG. we are in 2023 and still Sony can't make a proper compact phone with slim bezelsss? They are going backwards. Every manufacturer is going slimmer and slimmer with the bezels on every new phone yearly and there is Sony making phones with thicker bezels. Don't get me wrong I love the notchless design. I want that Sony keeps this design but they should minimize the bezels to maximum and don't make it thicker.

I agree with you slightly but bezels are NOT the issue. Going bezeless is like society's beauty standard. Most prefer bezels over notches and hole punches. If an uninterrupted viewing experience is "going backwards" then I'm throwing my car in reverse.

@@SonyEnthusiast if apple and Samsung showing that it's possible to have a speaker on top of the display with a very tiny bezel, than this means that the speaker doesn't need much space, the front camera does. Sony need to make the bezels slimmer but they should keep the notchless design. Its very nice to have a display without notches and punchholes but like I said it's possible to reduce the bezels. Less bezels means more compact phone. And this is what Xperia 5 users want.

god ...ppl are arguing big bezels are bad, loosing a camera is bad, only comes with 8gb RAM like bruh,
when the hell did big bezels side become bad? its still symmetric, its not even going to interfear into your movies like notches or hole punch on the display. and the whole reason why its big is cuz the bezel has circuitry in it, its not there because of "aesthetics". ppl are still buying a iphone SE in 2023 that has chunky bezels just because it doesnt have a notch or a hole punch, literally the only other brand phone in this planet that doesnt have a hole or a notch is sony and in this size if it requires to have a slightly big side bezel then ill take it over a hidious notch or a hole punch.
sony said it themselves you still get the benifit of 3 camera lenses on 2 cameras. Thats the whole point of why phones have more cameras, to have more lenses to select from. And a smaller camera hump is always welcomed in my book. I miss thos days when the camera lenses were no thicker than the phone itself but guess thats a dream thats never goona come true.
8gb ram is bad for that price?... may i remind you that these companies that advertise "16gb ram" and stuff are not even real? 12gb is the max any phone can have as in Real hardware RAM, the rest are called "virtual ram" that uses your internal storage as ram which is slower and also wears out the internal storage very fast and end up with a expensive paperweight in like 4 years. sony doesn't like doing that kind of planned obsolescence hardware /software practices, unlike other brands who see their products as a cash cow , sony tries to take pride in their work and find hardware that meets their standard. if that phone costs a 1000$ that means you are paying atleast 800$ for the hardware thats inside. meanwhile apple is out there selling 500$ hardware for 1500$ and if the market forces them to move that way, sony will definately give up and move on just like how they left the PC market, tablet market and various others that they were doing great.

Am still rocking an original 5. Waiting for the 5 V to upgrade. Now not sure. This looks like a very expensively priced midrange phone (but aren't they all). I am really not sure if this is an £850 phone. It feels a little penny pinching. That said the iPhone 14 Plus and Samsung S23 both have 128MB at this price point. Camera quality, screen in daylight and battery are my key things. I will be interested to see the photo results on a large screen. I fear Sony will not sell many of these at all (less than usual). Is their idea to try to get people to pay £1200 for a 1 V?

I'm not camera nerd and crying there is no telephoto, it's not that relevant for me I usually shot with DSLR, and i love the 5 series but the price here in poland is fckd, an comparing to 1V is totally fckd. I think I will just replace battery and charging port in my 5II and go on. The 5II was a superb deal back in 2020, bringing some innovations (first 4k 120fps recording phone etc.), and was even better than 1ii in some aspects, while also being a lot cheaper.

I'm an audiofile and love front facing stereo speakers. Does this sony follow tradition and sport them? I also appreciate the physical simplicity of this sony. I'm sick of, giant camera bumps and more and more lenses. And the slightly larger bezels are fine. Less chance of accidental touches when doing anything on the phone.
I'm still using my pixel 3xl and am totally happy with it's style and simplicity and quality and front facing stereo speakers. I'm not into buds, unless in an environment that needs um. Plane, office, etc.
But, I've had the Pixel for 4 years now and could use an upgrade and Google took away my front facing stereo speakers and added the big camera bump. The sony is my thought because of the build, the quality and the front facing stereo speakers. So, how about it? Does it have them and how do they sound? Nice review, thanks 👍

But if they keep doing like this they may end up as LG. They should make an appealing phone with yester year SD 8 gen chip or current SD 7 gen chip, may be they should reserve camera pro, video pro and cinema pro for 1 series and make a one camera app for photos and videos with like Samsung and Apple does. Not all people are pro users. I wish to see the xperia 5 series to be something in middle of xperia 10 series and 1 series. Final thought sony should extend their software support as per market trend. I know these updates don't bring all new features to old phones but that's what people expect and Sony must listen to it.

When I first saw it, it did throw me off. After living with the Xperia 5 V, it is clear that it's a premium phone with its Gorilla Glass and metal design. And I enjoyed watching a few episodes on a flight on its quality screen, and appreciated the great battery life - so there are areas it does a great job - but I agree. The bezels don't do its specs, price, and positioning justice.

@@bitkarek your point isn't valid. I have the 5 IV which has slimmer bezels and I have no issues with unwanted touches. Almost every flagship of other manufacturer has slimmer bezels and no one complains about unwanted touches. The competitors even has slimmer bezels and they go even slimmer and slimmer year by year. Therefore I can't understand this decision of Sony. The 5 series stands for compactness. The thick side bezels makes it less compact and less aesthetic.

No. Face appears narrow on wide angle lenses because you have to get too close to the face. But instead of moving close if you maintain same distance as you would do with a telephoto lens and zoom in digitally, everything will be same. If you crop a 48mp image 2x which was taken from a 25mm lens, will be 100% same as a 12mp image taken from a 50mm lens. (If the distance is same between subject and lenses)

The Xperia 5 V is significantly more expensive, so another alternative in between is the Pixel 7a which adds wireless charging to the mix. Either way, if I was buying the phones, I'd opt for Pixels versus the 10 V.

    What are your opinions....

I think we will have to wait and see what the 15 Pro brings before I can really answer that.
Third-party iOS apps do offer a lot of the creative video controls available on Sony phones, but if you value the camera monitor functionality and native Cinema and Video Pro for advanced features out of the box, then Sony could be the best option. Also, if you have a Sony camera, the fact the Xperia isn't just an external monitor, but also records 4K content onto the SD card might be a great asset.
Watching videos is better on an iPhone for me, unless you watch 21:9 content mainly. You don't see the notch when watching 16:9 video, on the iPhone, but it's cramped on the Xperia. For music, though, the Xperia gets my vote with the headphone jack.

I really like the Sony phones on paper. I'm holding one right now. What the specs dont say is that somehow they manage to fluff something in software (is my assumption). I've now had two or three updates (in several years) after which the battery drain dramatically changes. Twice it was fixed, but currently my phone empties a lot quicker. I always stop changing at 80 or 90% (feature of Sony's) as the battery for me is the most important reason to switch phones, but if they don't fix I'ma have to switch sooner than expected... In that case probably no Sony for me (🤞)
