And when used with a Pi W they make great photo frames that change them selves.
It will be interesting to see future versions with Color e-Ink screens.
With tablets and laptops getting so well made these days the phone only needs to be dongle so this is probably more useful than we think.
I would have this as a daily and probably find more ways to get the most out of it.
If it was waterproof it would be almost military grade as is.
I want a regular (edit: up to date and from a major manufacturer) smartphone with an e-ink back panel - shopping lists without turning on the phone, yes!
That is one great idea. It should be a new industry standard that every normal smartphone has an e-ink display on the back. You can nevermind it completely until you really need it.
there was one years ago, the Yota Phone 1. Frontside a normal display, backside a e-ink display. Sadly they never updated the models to newer better hardware (frontdisplay and chipsets) versions.

An E-ink smartphone won't be widely popular, but I think E-ink could be used as a secondary display on the back of a regular smartphone to display notifications, which would be like Nothing's Glyph Interface but more useful.
Agreed. Meizu used to make something like that if I'm not mistaken.

Fun fact: that headphone Jack is attached to a real good DAC, something Hisense includes on a lot of their devices. The built-in speaker is also very loud and clear. So listening to music on the A9 is great.
@@gentle285 the other only exceptions that come to my mind in terms of high-quality DACs are in LG phones when talking about smartphones.

I think thr biggest factor limiting advancement in e-ink screens is the fact that they are patented and solely controlled by a single company (E-ink holdings) with many patents to prevent competition; but then startups and industry can't really play with the screens to make too many improvements, just license them for use.

That actually looks amazing as a secondary phone, eg a work phone! Put away the colourful distractobox during the day yet still have the eInk phone to respond to messages from colleagues or get paged if the system you maintains goes down yet still be able to log into all the systems you need to investigate the problem while you're finding a place to set up your laptop. Even has a camera + headphone jack for Zoom! I wish you'd mentioned the price because if it was low enough to be a secondary work phone, I'd honestly be tempted
I'm sold, this would be perfect as either a secondary phone or a work phone.
i recommend it, partially for using as the main phone (so you use it only when you need it). and having your current phone for particular things (like good camera, watching movies,...)
It would be a great phone for people who work outdoors. Long battery life and a screen that can easily be read in the bright sunlight would be attractive features for some - provided that they don't need a color display.
I'd love an e-ink bicycle gps. Daytime outdoor readability on those things can be a challenge on something that is typically used outdoors during the day.
well, you could already use an garmin instinct 2 to upload GPX track and then get a handlebar bike mount to mount the watch, also garmin has way more advanced metrics :)
Get a cheaper one without color screen, but with a mono LCD display. I have a bryton aero 60 and it's perfectly legible in direct summer sunlight.

If digital paper gets cheap enough I might consider it but it's not worth having just one small screen when I can have multiple pieces of traditional paper. I'm aware that not everything can be done with or intended for digital paper, but still I could see some cases where you don't need something permanently but just need to reference multiple things and it would be silly to print it out when you have assorted sizes of digital paper

depending on the mode you put the a9 in, you can get very good motion out of it. it'll be a bit dim/faded. But it is responsive.
I wasn't sure about anything coming into this video except that it scratches at a level 6 with deeper grooves at a level 7.
This is exactly what I've been looking for. Some digital screen that does not hurt my eyes!
Been waiting more than a decade for a full featured eink phone and laptop, hopefully not too many years to go now.
Very interested in this actually. I don't game or play videos on my smartphone really...bit of browsing, listening to podcasts, Twitter etc. An e-ink screen would get me into ebooks without having to have a separate device at an extra cost. Will definitely check this out. There are some colour e-ink tablets out there so maybe if that tech improves we could see that on a phone next?
It would be a good phone for kids to make the phone less appealing to sit and scroll on. I honestly don't think kids should have phones until they are in their later teens but I don't have to worry about that for a while.
Hisense also has an E-ink colour smartphone on the market, called the A7 iirc. I'm hoping to see more cell phone manufacturers come out with their own E-ink screens instead of only Hisense, but seeing as how the E-ink company itself is so stingy with their licensing, and is straight-up Disney predatory about their patents, I don't see that happening any time soon. Hisense is gonna be the go-to for E-ink smartphone screens for the foreseeable future, it seems, which is unfortunate since their quality is subpar and their smartphones don't like to play nice with Western data networks.
ahahahahahaha
I work in a business with field technicians that need mobile devices to complete work orders. If the frame were more durable, this would be an absolute game changer. Easy to read and complete work orders and better battery life.
Just slap a case on there and it's probably durable enough, no?
get a cover bruh. Is it that difficult? And install a protective glass
I really love the idea but I don't think I would enjoy losing color on my smartphone. I love the benefits of E-ink, I only wish that color could be applied somehow. Once that is accomplished I would probably switch over. Awesome review!
Hisense’s A series offers models with color e-ink screens, typically known as the A5/A7/A9 CC. However, aside from the clarity being considered 10 times less than the non-CC models (a necessary trade-off, as you need to divide the total number of available pixels on the screen by three to accommodate the tri-color filters), the colors are also quite dull, resembling the pseudo-color screens of the last century.
Nice one! I already use an Boox Note Air C as my main Android E-paper tablet, and it does feel nicer to my eyes. (not to mention the fact that I recharge once a week!!!). I hope there will be a 'color' version soon!
