It really is a phone you can just pick up and go. No weird log-in's required, and you can install and un install anything you wish.

E Ink is the future. The benefits of it for your mental, visual, and sleep health are undeniable and life changing. I just got my first E Ink tablet and depending on my experience I may make the smartphone switch when the next one comes out.
I wish there was an ereader I could use for listening to podcasts at night before I go to bed. I hate keeping my phone nearby
@@sthardman you’re going to have to get an eink tablet. Ereaders don’t really do that.

Just enable greyscale on your smartphone. It helps with power saving, eye strain, and addiction to those eye-candy visuals.
@@rainsseason9617 grey scale has actually been proven to not help with battery life in a significant way and it also doesn’t help with eye strain at all. You’re still using an oled or lcd screen. E ink is literally like a piece of paper.

I just got one and the call quality is great sounds good and you are heard fine and the battery is outstanding much better then other phones while not using the phone the battery can last for weeks and not lose any I can get away with only charging this phone every 2-3 days but will depend on your use probably.
When using a smaller E-ink screen, I choose landscape instead portrait when reading documents because then the text and pictures becomes much larger and since you read from side to side anyway it makes more sense. Just make sure the app allows avoiding regular scrolling and instead allows jumping down and up one screen height at a time.
I would LOVE to have this as my main, however, my main issue is lack of google maps and more importantly, UK mobile banking support
Why can't you use banking apps on this phone? I wanna travel with it abroad...
@@ikemreacts Hello, I think it's because of the lack of Google Play Store, the phone being Chinese. But I'm sure you could access these services from the internet

Pretty sure this is running android. You can easily sideload your apps through the internet browser
@@dylantingley9400 I don't know if sideloading a banking app is really safe. Also maybe he doesn't know how to sideload, and sideloading every single app you want makes this phone not so interresting
Really cool design. Coming from the A5, the main differences I'd be interested in would be a direct comparison of contrast levels and ghosting, battery life and photo- and video-shooting.

i really think they need to re-design the UI in these, clearly scrolling and swiping is forever going to feel clunky with this kind of screen. They should have settings pages that that you flick through rather than scroll through

being looking around for a device to reduce my screen time!!! I'm already a fan of E-readers I own a boox air, and this is the first time i come across this device! This might just be my next phone very soon, all I need is be able to use the internet to read documents for work and manga or books on my spare time!

I totally dig this as a second phone, as I use two phones, and second is mostly just for communication. This would make it a long lasting, reading handy phone.
When will Hisense use a baseband that will actually work outside of China??? Until it's not a brick off WiFi, it's nearly useless regardless of how awesome it is. And never a hint of this in your reviews...

they should optimize the ui for example remove scrolling and add more widget in lock screen since the lock screen display is always on
The main reason for me to change to e-ink phone is battery life.. which you didn’t cover by the way.. the transition from lcd to e-ink happens when people realize that the battery lasts 4 times longer.. presumably.. I wouldn’t know because this is the first insight to the world of e-ink phones. Nice review though! But please take the battery life into your reviews and people might really get interested.
IMO battery is just a nice bonus. I'm planning on switching to e-ink devices because using lcd screens all day is really straining on my eyes.

the data specification list of such devices must also provide information on dynamic contrast ratio or something more suitable pertaining to the e-ink technology..
Do a video comparing the A5 with the A7 and A9. I'm interested in the differences in refresh rate for videos
I own these 3 ( but it is not A5, it is A5 pro C). A9 and A5 pro C have fast refresh rate. And A9 screen quality is definitely better than the other 2. It has warm light which is very awesome! I really love A9 because of this size and weight and how fast the response of the phone. Also it has better sound quality to me

This is honestly pretty slick. I'm absolutely blown away by how good e-ink devices can be. I'll be picking up a nova air c for christmas, and if that goes well, I'm definitely going to consider switching my phone to an e-ink phone; of which hisense seems to be the way to go. I love e-ink on my kindle, and really dislike the eyestrain that comes from lcd screens. I totally didn't realize that you can basically just get a modern android experience albeit with these really nice screens. I probably won't end up picking up the Hisense A9, but rather a color model (and likely whatever color model they release in the future). But this is still very cool to see.

It's great to see all the features, but the real question is how does it perform with 3rd party apps and mobile providers. I bought the Hisense A7 and I had to sideload the apps that I needed, which were laggy and it required a lot of messing about. Then there was the question of messaging. Often I wouldn't receive a message either online or in text until a few hours later. That is just not good enough.
Where can I find the specs? Does it have a barometer, GPS, and Accelerometer features?

I absolutely loved this device! I've been exploring alternatives to standard smartphones for a while, as I'm chronically addicted to scrolling through social media and wasting time on random content. However, switching to a dumbphone doesn't quite feel right, considering I still need my phone for contacting friends, family, and work (and having NFC for payments and a good camera isn't too bad either 😅). Now, I'm 100% convinced that I need one of these Hisense E-Ink smartphones because the screen technology makes watching videos so unappealing, preventing me from mindlessly scrolling 😂. Now, I just need to figure out how to purchase one here in Portugal.
I was expecting you to talk about the battery after all e ink screen should save a lot of battery.

Looks super interesting. I'm suprised they insist in having scrolling as the main way to navigate menus instead of them being fixed.
I have the Hisense A5 Pro CC and it‘s beautiful. But I was a little bit disappointed in the resolution and that you always see through the pages also in clear mode in comparison to a kindle. Does the A9 have a better resolution?
Same as a kindle! 300ppi. Color e ink is like 150ppi i think
This time Hisense uses a Qualcomm soc on A9 rather than the unisoc ones we see on A7 and A5p. So we have a better chance to see a root to properly enable A9 with GMS like on A5. No more 2account means a better life.

@@algot34 probably need a couple of magisk modules to spoof signature and bypass safetynet check. Might be possible but no guarantee

Really good this kind of product rather than going on a Dumphone. I imagine that we necessarily spend less time on it and at the same time we keep the possibility of managing some applications. How long does the battery last? There is a way to delete all these Chinese applications ?

Do eink phones' batteries get bad with time and use? I've an ereader and it and my old one both got REALLY bad with time. I pretty much can only use it when plugged in now

It runs Android 11, so you could root the phone and install Google play services that way if it doesn't have them

For the record, I will be using this phone as my primary.
This is exactly what I want in a phone. My eyes are sensitive and get strained easily with LED screens. I'm also autistic and the brightness/glare/colors of LED screens can be overwhelming.

What about battery life? How much SOT can you achive with one charge? Ok the apps you use on this phone aren't that energy demanding cause you will not watch videos or play games for sure, and that would have to add to battery life as well..
E ink smartphones tend to have amazing battery life. Since this has 4000 mah I would estimate about 5 days without a charge (and that's probably the minimum, it could probably go for 2 weeks!)

When will the be a fully fledged version dedicated to the US and other countries? It's too crippled to make any sense unless someone is basically allergic to conventual screens. This is a technology that would have a niche beyond the Kindle if it were invested in and developed properly. It's not fully functional and it's too niche to be economically feasible. It shouldn't cost for much for those specs. But would need to be a much bigger market for the price to come down.

Let's think about screen sizes for a second. I don't think diagonal is a good metric, because it's not reflective of an area for high aspect devices.
Classic eink reader has a 6" screen with 3:4 aspect, making the area of 111 cm squared.
This device has a 6.1" screen with a 1:2 aspect, making the area of 96 cm squared.
So after all, the difference isn't that large. But you do lose 14% screen real estate. You might be losing more depending on text wrapping due to lines coming up extra short.
It seems to be too skinny for reading manga for example.

Can you test GPS navigation using like Google maps or something else? I think a lot of ppl use their phone for navigation, so GPS is an important feature.
I live in Europe and it works fine and accurately. Just keep in mind that Google Maps doesn't work. I use Petal Maps and it is almost the same.
Does the Tesla car app work on this phone?
the screen of the e-ink phone doesn't just look smaller, but is indeed smaller than a Kindle because its aspect ratio is wider - that matters a lot. a 4:3 6" screen has a bigger area than a 16:9 6.1" screen. just saying...
Does screen light up automatically in camera mode like in Hisense A5 or not? thanks
Mine doesn't, but maybe it's because I need to configure it. You can activate the back light once you open the app, though.

I wish they fix that slow-awful gps-sensor built in previous models. If no, A5c now still top buy for long lasting battery life clear daylight vision phone to grown up users.

I'm super hyped for this phone, but for practical reasons (say: google maps) I still would prefer a somewhat coloured screen. Do you have any idea when this one will come in colour? It was expected some time last year, but nothing so far. Do you know what's going on?
Check out the hisense A5/A7 PRO C or CC, they are less powerful but appear to be a proof-of-concept for color e-ink technology.
@@chimpsandchips I'm familiar with those, but they are old; run on older versions of Android and some other limitations. Given that I use my phone's for 5-7 years, I don't wanna start with older Android already. There's quite some apps that simply need to work for daily life.
