- I was in Sacramento with our track and field team and took a short trip over to historic Old Sacramento to check out the buildings, museums, and railroad. This part of Sacramento was very important to our country's history with the destination of different trails and well as the railroad. Gold was discovered nearby so everyone was trying to head west! What is left is really interesting to explore, especially since it's in the middle of the big city.

Being born and raised in Sacramento, it's really neat to have an outside perspective. I sometimes forget how much history this city has.
I think we're all like that with our hometowns. But yeah Sacramento is full of interesting history!
You did old town right. Thanks for visiting our state. We love it, even if others don’t
Thank you! California has a lot of interesting history! I’ll be back at the end of July!
Thank God Sacramento has not let this beautiful area to be overcome by homeless and abandonment! Its still as lovely and admirable as it was when i used to take my kids there about 10-15 years ago!! The shops were fun and the restaurants where Amazing! The river was always fun to visit and let the kids play around to end off a great visit to this wonderful place!
Many hidden gems in Northern California….thank you for giving some love towards my state brother!!
Thank you very much! I’ve got one more video from the area that I’ll release in a couple weeks. I’ll be back at the end of July to film so more!
Wow, I knuckle my brow to the city of Sacramento! What a brilliant job they have done to preserve their past, great video John (again), thank you very much!
Thank you! Definitely an interesting place to stop and spend some time!
I live in Folsom California born and raised! Proud of our history of the rail lines, gold rush, and Johnny Cash being in our prison! Lol such a great area, I love it, blessed to live here and hope that others come and visit! :)
Oh dude, I remember being so jacked to walk inside those old trains as a kid. I loved it. I’d still do it again to this day. And overlooking the river made me proud to be a Californian. #goCA
Would be a fun place for a kid - and even better for an adult 😂
Love this area of Cali! They've preserved and cared for the history of Old Sac, and your video is beautiful! Thank you for sharing!'
For sure! It’s nice they have the forethought to do that. Thank you!
For what's worth, welcome to Sacramento.
I love riding the Harley down to Old Sacramento whenever I get a chance.
Tend to hang out at the Steamers coffee shop while listening to the free live music.
What a great place to visit. It unbelievable all it has to offer . So well preserved. Thanks for sharing a great experience of history.
Thank you! And yes so much to see for history buffs. Very cool!
Hi john thanks for the tour the old town is amazing love the old buildings . Cheers mate🇦🇺
Thanks Peter! Cool place to explore in the big city!
The Rail Museum is a must see. (The one in Carson City NV is as well, for your train minded viewers)
Much of Old Sac uses the second floor as the current "ground floor" after one too many floods. Dirt was brought in to raise ground level.
Just on the other side of the Tower Bridge is Sutter Health Park, where the Sacramento Rivercats play, they're the AAA farm team of the SF Giants.
Glad you made it to Old Sac, it's a popular place. One of the Strongman style events is held there.
I've lived in Stockton twice, Old Sac is a 45 minute drive up I-5.
As always...
Awesome info thanks! I went there years ago and made a mental note to go and document next time I was in town. Lots to see and learn there!
Wish I had found the railroad soon enough to of gone to the other end of the line now. I visited Virginia City, but was to late to take the train to Carson City. The people with that railroad are very nice people. Visited with them and got to see both engines they run . Definitely a worthwhile time if you are into that sort of thing. Now I am going to need to go back and see the other end of the line.
My home town! Love when people come to visit and explore, old town is really cool and there's lots to see. Glad you came by.
Loved visiting your hometown! Very cool place to explore!
😅You're right around the corner from my house 🤯you're usually back east old worn down towns well-welcome🍀 got R done😎✌️
Nice! I’ll be back at the end of July!
Thanks for bringing my childhood back to me. My ancestors were all from there. Spent a lot of time there.
That’s great! Such a cool area to visit!
Goodness, you are a long way from home. Good luck with your team ! What a pretty area to be that close to Sacramento, not many people there. Be good, be safe !
Thank you! I actually filmed this a few weeks ago and have one more video from this area I’ll release in a couple weeks. We had a good trip!
I would love to ride that train! We rode one in the Eureka Springs area. I loved it, I think the old trains have a presence and charm the newer ones just can't obtain. I enjoyed seeing this larger city. Have a great visit and good luck with the track meet! GOD bless
I’ve got to get over to Eureka Springs sometime! Thank you! The meet went well!
I haven't been there for 40 years. But i loved it. The wooden sidewalks and the old buildings really give you an idea of what life was like back then. There are also areas where only foot traffic is allowed.
Great video
Looks to be an interesting place to visit.TFS
Thanks! Different from my usual stops but very interesting!
Enjoyed this one as usual. Thanks for all your videos ❤️
Thank you Gloria! It was fun to explore a different kind of place!
I've brought my family here many times. The State Railroad Museum is a National Treasure and the streets of Old Town are safe !
I loved going there every time I visited my Dad. I would always get taffy at one of the candy shops.
Nice! It was my 2nd visit. Neat place!
Thank you for another good road trip.
Thank you! It was fun!
Thanks for sharing. It is a beautiful place.
Thank you! Very fun place to visit!
Awesomely good video. Two things I would definitely do if visiting there is ride the train, and the paddle wheel boat. The city looks like you could film a movie there that was based in earlier times. They probably have, but very interesting and informative video. Thanks so much for sharing this.
Thank you! You could definitely film a movie there because they are the actual old western buildings!
Movies are made in Sacramento still, using the capitol building, often as a replacement for the US capitol.
Proud of my hometown. you did a very thoughtful rundown of the city's importance to not only California, but to the nation as a whole, thank you 🙂.
Well said! 😊
if you get a chance to go back i highly recommend the underground tour of old sacramento!
I didn’t know about that. Would love to!
Sheldon Cooper would love the part with the train museum. 😄
Thanks for that amazing video
😊
Your video ended right at my apartment complex. Capitol Yards
Nice! Cool place to live!
You gotta check out Sutter Creek, Jackson, Ione area, Gold Country, all the old buildings from the 1800's still there. Just a little bit east of Sacramento.
glad you make this video...great job
Thank you!
I left Sacramento 2 years ago. I truly miss it. It's such an underrated quaint little city with it's own charm. And the people there are actually nice compared to the cold indifferent people out here in Chicago.
I really enjoy trains
You would love Old Sacramento! Lot of history. I would’ve enjoyed taking the train ride but didn’t have time that day.
@@TravelwithaWiseguy What impressed me most was the photo you showed that matched the current view. I really love seeing those, when museums do that. to me it really puts me in that mindset of somebody arriving in town, to see the old view and the current view. I imagine what they would think if they were alive to day and seeing that.
Yes that was one of my favorite things too!
Living long distance with my gf and now, thank god, my wife - sacramento was what i fell in love right after my wife! I cant wait to be there soon again. Great Video and thank you
Awesome! Thank you very much!!
The highway that curves around old sac like a bubble. Wasn't initially supposed to be like that. They were going to level the whole thing in the 60s. It was a slum in those days.. Somehow they managed to convince the state to make the historical district and restore all the buildings. Even rebuilt a couple that had already been torn down.
Glad they did! Fun place to visit!
In the 40’s it was known as Skid Row, not a very classy place but! If you were short of money 85c would buy you steak and eggs, bowel of the best Texas Red , small 15c, large 30c.
Capitol idea you had running up state. Golden opportunity to explore a well kept historic district. Good to see you haven't reigned in your enthusiasm for including yet another animal in your videos. But I was afraid you might stop to horse around ignoring it was a working day for that equine. Hope your team had a good time.
Good to see you haven’t stopped horsing around even when I do!
Thanks again for the 😂😂 someday I’m gonna gather up all these comments and make a joke book.
@@TravelwithaWiseguy Ok, I'll try not to nag you for an autographed copy.
No I want YOUR autograph!
Nice job representing Sactown, would it be ok to share some of your clips on my site? Will definitely provide your link for more traffic of our wonderful City.
Yes no problem - share away!
Another interesting fact I didn’t hear mentioned is that there is a “secret” underground in Old Sacramento (and also under close by neighborhoods) that was created when the city raised the street level to prevent damage from devastating floods.
That’s why when walking around Old Sac there are lots of business that are accessed by going downstairs, like a basement, but it’s the original street level from the Gold Rush days.
After the raising, the 1st floor became a “basement” and the 2nd floors were now the “1st” floor.
I didn’t know about the underground tours! Would’ve loved to check that out!
Gold was discovered in Coloma which is about 45 min east of Sacramento
Correct - I also did a video about Coloma - neat place!
@TravelwithaWiseguy sweet i will check it out. Great job in your videos by the way.
Thank you very much! Heading back to California in a few days along US 50 😊
You should come there during drinking hour:-)
🍻
@@TravelwithaWiseguy
You came during the morning.
You need to show up when the Lowrider show up and the Harley Davidson's show up.
Mixed in our about a group of teenagers about sixteen to twenty years of age about forty of them to.
And the Kings fans.
It gets pretty interesting
It's interesting from the aerial view you showed us how the highway is dividing old historic parts from the new modern parts of Sacramento.
I agree! Glad they have protected the area!
So we haven't seen progress NAACP involved
Gold was discovered in 1848
I wonder what the name Sacramento means ?
It’s Spanish for Sacrament. Which is a religious ritual or ceremony.
@TravelwithaWiseguy Specifically, it's the Catholic Sacrament, as many California places were named by the Spanish who were the first Europeans to arrive.
@@TravelwithaWiseguy thanks. I thought that might be what it meant. My brother and I still attend church of the same faith as are ancestors.
Old Sacramento I assume is similar to Old Town in Wichita.
Yes I think it’s the same kind of idea.
We have a issue with Modesto California salvation army homeless shelter in Modesto California sur 13 chapter gang girls in shelter in back
Nobody's gonna mention the crazies, loonies, and homeless? OK. I don't ride my bike down there anymore. Not anywhere into the downtown area. Thanks, Gavin!!!
Are you kidding me bro everybody hasn't done anything like that you ever heard of Virginia City Nevada are tombstone Arizona Deadwood South Dakota
Yes I’ve done videos on most all of those places
Sacramento stinks....
Great video, my land!
