I've lived in many UK towns and cities and I have to say that Birmingham is the best drinking town of the lot... Amazing bars, great beers, good prices, and generally friendly and welcoming
Some great pubs but the Old Royal , around the corner from the Old Contemptibles, and the Prince of Wales by the Rep theatre were sadly missed. The two cats at the Wellington have both been rehoused by one of the barmaids .
You did a great job in covering so many places in one go... Don't know how you stayed the distance... I'd recommend you try the Davenports Queens Head, behind the Law Courts next time
Sad to hear that the grand old Victorian pub,The Crown, on Corporation street (near the law courts) has been closed down. For goodness sake, somebody please step in and save it.
The back story to the Old Contemptibles is interesting. At the start of WW1 a group of soldiers met there before boarding the trains at Snow Hill starion to go to the front line. They vowed to meet there after the war was over and the survivors did just that. The regiment was nicknamed The Old Contemptibles and the brewery adopted the name for the pub in their honour.
I enjoyed that. As a brummie living in Brisbane since 2009 it was a walk down memory lane. Bacchus bar and old joint stock were my faves. Met my wife in the walkabout😂😂
A&B is a Brum staple, many a night ending on the decking outside (when it’s not Maccies on the ramp)…so looking forward to the JQ. Also, shout out to the Flapper

I'm in Birmingham tomorrow. Thanks for recommending the Bacchus Bar. Had no idea it existed, but it looks very decadent and wonderfully over-the-top. I'll pop in for a pint.
We rely on recommendations on our facebook page for where to go (make sure you're following that) and sadly, not one person recommended that, whereas there were at least 40 others in total that had multiple recommendations.
We always put out on Facebook where we are off to and ask for suggestions etc... sadly, in over 100 people giving us recommendations, that wasn't even mentioned once, whereas most of what we did here was suggested lots of times.
Old Contemptibles IS a sister pub to Bacchus. Both are Nicholson's pubs as are the 2 Shakespeare pubs in the city centre. 👍🏻🍻

Used the old contemptibles back in the 70's. Glad to see they've got rid of the fishing nets and lobster pot bouys that used to grace the walls

The other Shakespeare (Inn) on Summer Row is a really beautiful Victorian pub.
The joint stock was the stock exchange in Birmingham & if you leave through the back door you can walk straight into the Wellington

Bin in most of those over the years. OCs was a regular haunt in the late 80s. The Craven Arms not far from the Mailbox is a cracking boozer. 😉👍🍻
