Thanks so much for the video, I have to install a new bottom seal on a Overhead Garage door brand. I have to remove the bracket the cable loop is on so I'm going to follow your video instructions. I always thought removing the cable that it would be under the spring tension but I guess it isn't by watching your video. Thanks again
You're welcome and thank you for watching the video! I also appreciate the donation. That is super nice of you. 🙏 As long as you keep one cable on, you'll be fine. Replacing one at a time. Don't take both off at the same time because you will lose all the spring tension. When the door is open there is still tension on the spring. Just not the full amount like if the door was closed. You got this Gregory! 👍🏼👊🏼🤘🏻
Good video though in my case i dont need to replace the cables, problem i have is when the door is down one side of the cable is loose has much slack, is this where i have to loosen the drum square screws & rotate the drum that would tighten up the cable then tighten the bolts? I would guess the proceedure would be different being that there would be much tension from springs eould have to use visegrips on the rod doesn't spin when loosing the drum screws?
If it were me, I'd follow this video. Just start fresh setting the cables. Only part that will be different in your case than from the video, is the spring. You're spring is already wound up. So just stick a rod in the end cone, loosen set screws, then rest the rod/winding bar against the top panel. Then follow the steps getting the cables squared away. ruclips.net/video/uPyK_85TfoQ/видео.htmlsi=3Is6ewwYgUaEzObn

awesome video! did EXACTLY as you said (including amazon for the 7' cables bc no hardware stores carry them) and completed the job in about 7 mins for both cables! too ease!!
I have spent all morning watching videos on how to replace these (since both of mine snapped last night) and this was the easiest and quickest way I have been shown to replace them. Going to try it out here in a few hours!!!
@@garagedoorgenius Well, didn't work out as easy as I had hoped. Since both cables snapped it was a little more tedious job. Had to install both cables, then wind each individual torsion spring then readjust the cables on the drums. Finally got it done but there is a slight gap on the left side. I gave up. haha
@@milesej05 well you did more than what most people can. Hats off to you sir. Your mechanically inclined enough to figure out what needs to happen to get the job done. Although you got a gap you definitely did a good job in my book. Especially if you're not a garage door guy and just a DIYer.

Great video, thanks a lot it'll save a lot of us a lot of money, I have the garage door guys out they want $500 to replace the springs and $100 more for the cables
Same here. $550 for the springd, and another $125 for the cables. Then we noticed cracked hinges. Aaaand he wanted to replace those at $25ea. I got him down to $350 for the springs and let him do it since it wouldn't open and we needed it. Then I bought heavy duty cables, hinges, and rollers for $110 on Amazon. Came out way ahead.
Thank you for the video. I'm going to practice this on my spare garage door. Unfortunately, I had to just pay over $1000 for two springs and cables. Ugh, I just had surgery, so I'm unable to do the work myself. Of course, I have surgery, and one of my springs snaps, and it frayed one of the cables. Oh well. The company I used quoted my around $500 after tax to replace the springs. Even at that price, they're making money. The service tech shows up, and asked if his office quoted me over the phone. He even asked the exact quoted amount. I told him that they had quoted me, and that's when he shook his head. He pulls out the actual price of the springs with the cables, and wouldn't ya know, it was magically double the price!! Then, they took all of the hardware for the drum bearings off, and tried to increase the sale by including bearings, new wheels, etc. They totaled it up and it was dang near $2000. I feel violated. lol, not really, but I am definitely not happy. These big companies are ripping people off. After watching videos like this, I want to start my own business repairing garage door springs, cables, etc. I'm all for people making money. However, I am not all for people being screwed over by these install/repair companies. I can only imagine some little old lady that can barely afford to live in this economy, and having something like this happen. It's just crazy.
@@joootooobboosheet2486 I'm so sorry. This comment is sad. I understand you have to make money but that's insane. Did the company have green in their logo and start with P? Heal up my friend and good 🤞🏼. Thanks for the comment!
With my garage door, the cable already snapped at the knob, and the garage door was in the down position. So, is it safe to manually open the garage door as per your video and install the new cable? Other instructional videos say you have to deal with the spring torsion bar first. Thanks for your help, and great video.
Hello! Thanks for the comment. If you can wiggle the door fully open, then use this video. ruclips.net/video/LykX6kQXPGo/видео.html And actually, this video you currently watched should work for changing 1 cable. FYI, I recommend changing both cables.
This was helpful, thank you . I was able to put cable back on track, and door lowered fine. But then, when I raised it, the cable came back off track, any idea why?
@@curtobrien1020 yessir. That's why the door is heavy AF and the cable comes off. Need to get a spring replacement. If there's 2 springs, I recommend changing both.
Thanks, hopefully I can manage with garage door shut, mine is stuck shut, cable loop at the bottom rusted through and popped off when I shut it the other day or could there be another issue I cannot see that is causing it to not open, the door when I shut it somehow is now uneven, closes completely on the side loop broke but other side is almost a inch from closing but everything is in the tracks.
@garagedoorgenius I need to change one of the bottom roller brackets. I have a torsion spring system. If the cable isn't broken can I still remove from the cable from lower bracket as shown in this video? In other words will the cable be under any tension? Thanks!
@@awmartian I would make sure there's an extra set of vise grips under a roller on the side your replacing. As long as there is slack in the cable, no tension is on it. Just be super careful buddy. 🙏🏼
@@garagedoorgenius I will, thank you! I already replaced the bottom rollers by using the vise grips and bending the track slightly. Great video brother. You have explained it in such a way that you've inspired me to give it a go. Plus showing the before and after really helpled. God bless you.
Thanks for the video. One note - If your rollers are going bad, or you just want to replace them, now is the time to replace the roller where the cable attaches as well. There will be no tension on it with the door up and cable off. I did all of my rollers, changing over to smooth, nylon, rollers, and the cables at the same time.

Ive seen other videos where they start the cable on the first groove with the garage door down...would that work as well? Pretty tight area to work with in my garage with the door up
It would work, but be more difficult because you're dealing with full tension from the springs. Also, puts the risk factor up quite a bit. Just be careful my guy. 👍🏼
Helloooo! This is a great video my cable just snapped, but my garage door is leaning to the side that snapped. How do I get it to go straight again should I even touch it? Please help!!
been repairing garage doors for about 6 months now and any time ive had to replace cables i always take the tension off the springs. this is a game changer for me. thank you.
After wrapping around the cable I am short 5 inches to get loop to end of the door. When I push spring is getting tension. Not sure if I can force to reach the door
I read the 7ft high door takes a 102" cable for torsion spring style. But google shows mixed info. Its confused with the older side mount stretch springs.
Thank you very much for the demonstration! My cable came off from one side. I've ordered a pair from Amazon. Just one quick question, when do I have to unload and reload the spring? In your other video, you did that and mentioned it was dangerous. But from this video, it seems like we can replace the cable without touching the spring system?
If you follow this video you won't have to mess with spring tension. 👍🏼 My other video shows how to reset cables and wind the spring. Yes, it can be dangerous, but take your time. You would have to purchase some spring winding rods from Amazon to do that.
@@garagedoorgenius , wow, I did't expect to get your reply so quickly. :) I will follow the instructions in this one. don't want to touch the dangerous stuff. Thank you bro. So glad find your channel! Great job!
Question . I have 7 foot height door . When I measured my cable which is 8 ft 8 inches .. ie 104 inches . Do I need to get exact length for my cable or will 9 ft long cable ok ?
You may end up with slack in the cables if you use 9'. Which we don't want. You could measure out what the existing cable was and cut off the cable end. Home Depot, Lowes, Menards, Amazon sell cable ends. They are super cheap. IMO, use the existing length of cable. You don't want to open the door and have a cable spin off the drum. 👍🏼 www.homedepot.com/p/Everbilt-1-8-in-Aluminum-Ferrule-and-Stop-Set-43254/205887928
So I have to replace my two bottom panels and just wanted to know if I bring the garage door up like how you have it and remove the wire as seen, will it chop my fingers, etc… off since the tension spring is still hot? Thanks.
This video is awesome but I can’t remove my garage drum cable since the loop is actually locked in by a 5/16 pin with a clip instead of a knob like in the video. please suggest how to remove the loop from this type of setup. Thanks
@@TinMan-kd2gv first thing you want to do is kill the spring tension. Because if you don't that bottom fixture will fly up faster than a blink of an eye. So that's priority #1. Once spring tension is off, take the screws out of the bottom bracket. You may have to take the first lag screw out of the bottom of the vertical track so you can spread it out to help with pulling off the bracket. You shouldn't have to mess with the bottom rubber..
Thanks a million for this video, Bro!!! U'r an angel, a life saver❤ After wandering aimlessly for 1/2 hour @hmdepot, ordered the part from amazon for under $20. Step by step instructions in the video were great help as it made the whole process a cinch. I was able to change both cables in less than 20 minutes. Cheers
Thanks for the video. I'm running into an issue I ran into last time I had to change springs and cables. I get both cables onto the drums and all looks good. Lowering the door is fine. Then when I raise the door it looks good until the door is about a foot or less from the top. At this point, the cables on both sides suddenly loose tension on the drums and start to unravel. I had this happen with the original cables as well as the new ones. Any recommendations? I've tried your method and also attaching the cables when the door was closed. Same result for both.
I finally had time to work on this today. Same result. However, I noticed that when the door is 10 to 12 inches from being all the way up, the torsion bar stops spinning. This is what is causing the cables to come off the drum. Would this possibly be caused by not enough tension on the springs?
@@MH-tn4yv for sure. That torsion bar is supposed to turn all the way up and down. Is there some type of coupler that attaches the torsion bar to one another? Something is loose..screw, set-screw.
just wondering for single car garage, will it work if I don't install the spring nor cable since I don't have enough head room? I know the door won't stay but I only use the garage for storage and I can use something to lock the door into position once opened.
Great video. I do have a question, tho. My garage door doesn't open. The cable is gone. Is that the reason it doesn't open? What do you recommend I should do?
No cables is definitely the reason your door isn't opening. I would get the door height. Order a pair of cables from Amazon. Then follow this video. ruclips.net/video/uPyK_85TfoQ/видео.htmlsi=MqDzvaB1ez7WF4xe

Great video thank you! I replaced one cable and now the other one is not guitar-string-tight when the door is down - I'm planning to replace the other cable but I'm wondering if I need to adjust the drum so that they are both extremely tight or should I adjust them both to be sort of tight but not guitar-string-tight, please let me know thanks again!
@@royalbryson1 hey, you're welcome.
Let me ask. Does the door stay open when you raise it? Or does it kinda drift down?
Wow, this is so much easier than I thought it was going to be.
It's not too terrible. Good job my guy! 👊🏼💯
Thank you, now I have enough understanding, and i am going to fix my cables.
Glad to help! 🙏
As long as you keep one cable on, you'll be fine.

Let me know how it goes! You got this. 👊🏼
@@garagedoorgenius I'm pretty mechanically inclined, but when there is a large amount of potential energy stored in a device (torsion spring), I tend to wean away from the repair. I'll do every type of repair in a house expect gas piping. haha. Thanks again!!!

Same here. $550 for the springd, and another $125 for the cables. Then we noticed cracked hinges. Aaaand he wanted to replace those at $25ea. Thanks man , one project that needs to get done.👊🏼
You got this bruv! 👊🏼
I ran a business in Austin and was very successful without ripping people off. I believe in karma. I agree. This economy has gone to shit. And I don't see and end in sight.
If you can wiggle the door fully open, then use this video.
ruclips.net/video/LykX6kQXPGo/видео.html
And actually, this video you currently watched should work for changing 1 cable. FYI, I recommend changing both cables.
This was helpful, thank you . I was able to put cable back on track, and door lowered fine. But then, when I raised it, the cable came back off track, any idea why?
Does your door rest in the mid position? Does it fall back to the floor?
@@garagedoorgenius I think the tension spring broke, it's in two pieces
@@curtobrien1020 yessir. That's why the door is heavy AF and the cable comes off.
Need to get a spring replacement. If there's 2 springs, I recommend changing both.
Thanks, hopefully I can manage with garage door shut, mine is stuck shut, cable loop at the bottom rusted through and popped off when I shut it the other day or could there be another issue I cannot see that is causing it to not open, the door when I shut it somehow is now uneven, closes completely on the side loop broke but other side is almost a inch from closing but everything is in the tracks.

Same thing happen to me today. One end snapped off. Door stuck shut. Were you able to install the cables with the door closed?
great video, does replacing a frayed cable help with leveling the garage door?
Absolutely a fraid cable is going to make it longer than the other one. Which will cause cable slack.
Worked perfectly. Me and my garage door thanks you!!!
At that time, I noticed the left bottom bracket is rusted, has a stripped bolt & the side pin isn't flush to the door panel. Thanks brother.

Perfect explaination. Thank you!

Helloooo! This is a great video my cable just snapped, but my garage door is leaning to the side that snapped. How do I get it to go straight again should I even touch it? Please help!!
Is the door up all the way or part way up?
Easy money! And doing that all one handed and the hand with the camera takes mad skills! 😂 Amazing work Bro! Keep 'em coming.
I appreciate the kind words Santiago! This is a video I've been meaning to do for a while. Finally got it ✅ off the list.
Great video! My only question is, what do I do if the cable has snapped off on both sides and the door is closed down? It's impossible to lift up.
been repairing garage doors for about 6 months now and any time ive had to replace cables i always take the tension off the springs. this is a game changer for me. thank you.
You're welcome buddy! 🙏
Who told you to take the tension off. Just back wind the springs. Been doing it for 21yrs
After wrapping around the cable I am short 5 inches to get loop to end of the door.
When I push spring is getting tension.
Not sure if I can force to reach the door
Yes, force it up to reach the hoop. 👍🏼
I read the 7ft high door takes a 102" cable for torsion spring style. But google shows mixed info. Its confused with the older side mount stretch springs.
I can measure a set and get back to ya tomorrow.
Thank you!!! Fixed it really quick
Awesome job getting it fixed! 👍🏼
Easy 5 minute fix. Thank you for a clear video tutorial!
You're welcome 🙏.
My other video shows how to reset cables and wind the spring. Yes, it can be dangerous, but take your time. You would have to purchase some spring winding rods from Amazon to do that.

THANK FOR THE VIDEOS. MY QUESTION IS. WHERE DO YOU GET THE 20FT PIPE WHERE THE TORSION SPRING GOES? MY GOT BENT AND NEWS A NEW ONE. Thanks
A local garage door company should be able to sell you one. Home Depot or Lowe's unfortunately don't sell them.

This video is awesome but I can’t remove my garage drum cable since the loop is actually locked in by a 5/16 pin with a clip instead of a knob like in the video.
please suggest how to remove the loop from this type of setup. Thanks
@@TinMan-kd2gv you want to release the spring. Then take that bottom fixture off. Do you need a video of restarting from scratch?
@@garagedoorgenius this is the question, how to take the whole bottom fixture off?
I assume I need to pull the rubber seal back before removing it?
@@TinMan-kd2gv first thing you want to do is kill the spring tension. Because if you don't that bottom fixture will fly up faster than a blink of an eye. So that's priority #1.
Once spring tension is off, take the screws out of the bottom bracket. You may have to take the first lag screw out of the bottom of the vertical track so you can spread it out to help with pulling off the bracket. You shouldn't have to mess with the bottom rubber..

I appreciate the awesome feedback! Nice job fixing the issue.
Check out this video. Do the steps and tell me what the door does.

@@MH-tn4yv sounds good! You got this. 💪🏻
