    Perfect! One side broke at the bottom loop and so I figured I'd go to Lowes and grab a replacement. As you mentioned, they only sell the longer extension spring cables, but I thought I could cut it and crimp a barrel on it. Wrong! Regular pliers do not work for this. Scavenged a cable from the door we don't use and tried for an hour to get it on. Seemed impossible with the cable tension so I called for service, but they were closed for the day. Watched this video, ordered the right parts and a pair of vise grips on Amazon and they arrived the next day. In 30 minutes, I replaced the broke cable and did the other side too since that cable was frayed. Not a lot of room to work on the ladder, but I got it done and saved a large service fee. Thanks again!

    Great video! Went to the comments section. Didn't even watch other videos anymore after checking out the positive feedbacks. After 2 hours I replaced both cables. Took longer than anticipated because my door is old school from the early 90's. There's no knob fixture at the bottom of the door to hook the cable to. Instead there's a rod with a pin so the only way to remove the cable is to pull down the whole bracket/roller assembly about 2 inches so that I can slide the rod out to free up the cable. Safer design but not repair friendly. Thanks for this great video i saved a couple hundreds. 🤙🏽

    i dont ever comment on videos but this legit saved me $$$. I got quotes for this work between $100-$240, but legit followed this video and replaced it in 5 mins by simply following advice and buying cables from Amazon. Lowes, and home depot do not carry these! I would add a bit more advice however, make sure the cable lengths are the same as the one you are taking off. There are different lengths, but i found mine was 8’6 and i measured the new cable and old cable to make sure they are the same length before attempting to do the install. Great job and thanks for posting this video!!!

    Good video though in my case i dont need to replace the cables, problem i have is when the door is down one side of the cable is loose has much slack, is this where i have to loosen the drum square screws & rotate the drum that would tighten up the cable then tighten the bolts? I would guess the proceedure would be different being that there would be much tension from springs eould have to use visegrips on the rod doesn't spin when loosing the drum screws?

    • @garagedoorgenius
      @garagedoorgenius  7 месяцев назад

      If it were me, I'd follow this video. Just start fresh setting the cables.
      Only part that will be different in your case than from the video, is the spring. You're spring is already wound up. So just stick a rod in the end cone, loosen set screws, then rest the rod/winding bar against the top panel. Then follow the steps getting the cables squared away.

    Thank you for the video. I'm going to practice this on my spare garage door. Unfortunately, I had to just pay over $1000 for two springs and cables. Ugh, I just had surgery, so I'm unable to do the work myself. Of course, I have surgery, and one of my springs snaps, and it frayed one of the cables. Oh well.
    The company I used quoted my around $500 after tax to replace the springs. Even at that price, they're making money. The service tech shows up, and asked if his office quoted me over the phone. He even asked the exact quoted amount. I told him that they had quoted me, and that's when he shook his head. He pulls out the actual price of the springs with the cables, and wouldn't ya know, it was magically double the price!! Then, they took all of the hardware for the drum bearings off, and tried to increase the sale by including bearings, new wheels, etc. They totaled it up and it was dang near $2000. I feel violated. lol, not really, but I am definitely not happy. These big companies are ripping people off.
    After watching videos like this, I want to start my own business repairing garage door springs, cables, etc. I'm all for people making money. However, I am not all for people being screwed over by these install/repair companies. I can only imagine some little old lady that can barely afford to live in this economy, and having something like this happen. It's just crazy.
