My spring snapped in half (2nd time in about 10-12 years). Your video was way more practical and helpful than another I watched. Thank you for making it less traumatic.
I have to say, this is the best tutorial on garage door repair I have seen! One of our cable drums broke and of course, the door couldn’t be raised. Another YT vid showed where to order a new pair of drums on Amazon ($20 delivered next day), and I followed your video exactly. Our single door is 9 feet high. Everything went perfectly, and saved us $160 easy instead of using a pro installer. We have 0 extra money, so this savings was huge. Thank you so much. BTW…the 7/16” nuts are 3/8” now. 😉 IMPORTANT….winding up the spring is pretty creepy as you get near the end. Ours took 38 quarter turns and it was kinda tough for this 73 year old. Do what he suggests and get the winding bars. If you use anything smaller, it could slip out and SERIOUSLY hurt you or a bystander!
This helped alot, literally took me and my fiance 7 hours the other day to fix our door. And I watched this video step by step and got it done by myself within a hour. Thanks brother, I appreciate it! 😅👍

By far best garage door fix video, two suggestions, make sure door is lifting level, if it’s not, shim the bottom and retention one of the pulleys to get it level and have equal tension on both cables. If one cable is tight and the other is not, just tighten the loose one by using the vice grip as a safety and resetting the set screws. I completed this but cables came off three times while cycling door, took a while but realized that something must have fallen and bumped the side vertical rail and moved it out of vertical, fixed that and door works perfectly. Good luck with your repair!
This tutorial is phenomenal. I’ve watched many videos regarding this problem and NONE OF THEM display the level of expertise that you incorporate with a practical articulate explanation of each step. Okay Garage Door Genius! I just completely installed my First garage door ( 8 x 7 ) thanks to your channel! I had to open and close it a few times just to celebrate! I think it was the Third attempt that passed the test. My door started growling like a bear the first few times I tried while winding the spring and be extra careful not to have my head look like a meatball with extra sauce. The problem was : I placed my Vice Grips upside down and it was difficult to release in the position after tightening the red screws on the cone. I found that 31 (1/4 turns) with the winding bars worked perfect and no more growling at me. I have two more garage doors to go. I ordered the missing bearing on my 8' high door and am waiting for the Mail truck. The next is the 18 x 7 Amarr. I need to study how you wind both springs coils at the same time? ( Two spring set up). THANKS you have the best HOW to and (Don't do this) about garage doors on the internet
Broh, that's so awesome! I was just actually thinking about you. Wondering how it went. Sorry I didn't get back to ya through email. This work week was a very hectic one. This tutorial is really, really amazing. I watched couple videos prior to found this one and none of them had what I was looking for. I can't even imagine how much I was going to spend by calling a technician. One side of my garage cable went off while I was closing the garage in the middle of night. @garagedoorgenius i guess I spoke to soon. I opened and closed the garage multiple times. I have a garage door opener. Anyways the right side which is opposite of the spring just came undone. The left side is still up. Any suggestions?
@therealbrian732 okay, if the door is open and one side cable is off, use this video. ruclips.net/video/LykX6kQXPGo/видео.htmlsi=KDqYdIbZy9oMHACx Now to get to the root of the problem. If one side cable is loose it could be the torsion tube may not be level. I always shoot a laser line from end bearing to end bearing. Right in the center of the bearing the line should be. If one side is higher than the other that will cause a loose cable. Also, make sure the horizontal tracks are level. Hope that makes sense.
@garagedoorgenius hello. As mentioned earlier the cables came un done. I watched your video went through the steps and it came off after a few times again on the right side. I then since my last reply bought longer wheels for the top and bottom corners because when the cable came off under the tension of the spring it knocked a wheel off the track. I then went through all the steps again and the right side came off. I then looked at the tension on the cables, checked tne tracks looking for a clue and realized the end bearing had black powder everywhere on top. I ordered 2 new end bearings. When I took the right side off sure enough it was bad and couldn't spin it with my fingers. I changed it and the other side because why not I have 2 new ones, went through all the steps again and I am confident now it is fixed. I have opened it and closed manually dozens of times and then with garage door opener dozens of times. I now will make it a habit to spray them every few months. Not sure if you have video about why things may cause the cables to break but that could be a new one if not. I want to thank you for this video though because I would never have been able to to even figure out where to start thanks
@therealbrian732 I absolutely LOVE this comment! Thanks for sharing your story for others to read . Great job diagnosing the problem. Sometimes all it takes is to look things over and see what you find. In your case you had a ceased up bearing. It definitely happens, but not very common. Great idea also for routine maintenance. Keeping the springs/rollers/bearings lubricated will keep the door rockin and rolling! Also, what a great idea making a video about the components that could go bad. I will for sure start getting content 👍🏼. Thanks again for the comment. Have a wonderful new year! 🎉🎊🎉

1 Hook cable at bottom then put up through spots. 2 Loosen bolts on drum (circle thing). 3 Stand to the side! Loosen set screws on spring. 4 Find dimple on garage door beam. 5 Rotate drum so bolt will go in different spot, not on same dimple. Start fresh for new spot. 6 On left side. Slide drum to bearing plate… finger tighten. Wrench tighten 2 or 3 turns. 7 Fit vice grips to tube. 8 Stick cable in notch hole and pull up on both sides. 9 Follow grove forwards to get on track. 10 Cable should be like bass string and free. 11 Use vice grip on tube to lock in place vertically. 12 On right side. Hook in cable first. 13 Start winding cable. 14 Pull down slightly firmly and put drum in place. Tighten bolts. 15 Go to tension bar. Stand to the side. 16 29 to 31 quarter turns going up because it is a 7 foot door. 17 Finger tighten set screws. Then use wrench. 3 turns. Don’t overtighten. 18 Take bar out. Take vice grips off. 19 Check to see if door goes up easily. 20 Write grateful comment for Garage Door Genius.
I don't leave comments on RUclips, but for this video, I had to. First of all, the video quality and editing was top notch. Secondly, you went through each step with great detail, not skipping over anything. And third, each step was exactly what needed to be done with no fluff. Perfection my friend, thanks for helping me fix my garage door. Cheers ✌️
@@garagedoorgenius well it goes up and down much smoother but it is obviously unlevel now. Right side is higher than the left by maybe an inch. Now what?🤣
@@Redfish3240 Go to the side that's off the floor . Take your 7/16 wrench and loosen the set screws on that side drum. Now when you do it, don't fully take the set screws loose. When you're loosening them up, baby steps. Once those set screws are loose enough, what's going to happen is that side of the door will drop down to the floor. You have to be very careful though. Don't loosen the set screws too much. Micro adjusting. Once door is to the floor tighten the screws back up.
@@garagedoorgenius ok. I admit it. You sir are a genius! I was skeptical at first but you solved my problems. Followed the instructions to the letter and it worked. I’m impressed. So when both my springs yeeted themselves to oblivion I didn't want to do it. But I'm not in a position to pay someone else right now. Thanks to you and Amazon, I have a working garage door again
Thanks for the great video! I just did this tonight and my garage door opens nice and smoothly 👍... It took about an hour and for those with TWO TORTION SPRINGS(2 car door) make sure to loosen the bolts on the left and right springs. I did it even though the video shows a single door and he does say this works for two springs as well, but some may not know to do that🤷♂️ .It wasn't that hard to do,just make sure you have adequate distance from the wall and good footing when winding the springs because after 25 turns, one needs good stability. 29 turns worked for me,30 made the door open too quickly. Good luck to those that do this!
Really appreciate the video, just order a set of twisting rods too. First time I feel like I know/understand what I need to do. 😀 I have a small door for my mowers that both cables jumped and then a single full-size with one cable jumped.
Exactly what I needed, thanks! We've had to run to the door and lift after hitting the button so it wouldn't stop (not telling you how many ye..... How long we've been lifting it. Now just push the button.
Going to try this tomorrow. Been doing a lot of repairs in my aunts home. Her garage door has been getting a lot of usage. Went to open it today and it only came up a ft. Had to crawl under it to enter and a cable was laying on the ground. Looks like it covers every step. Thanks!
Lol thank you for this I just tried doing a side mounted garage door opener and both cable got completely jammed had to cut a cable and am going to do this now and hopefully install the new opener
@@garagedoorgenius Hi Buddy. I have 2 question. 1. If garage door spring is broken, how do i manually bring grage door up, do we need 2 person to bring it up.. 2. when i install garage door does it matter 12 or 15 inch radius with respect to installation.
@@sivucit hello my friend! 1. Okay. If it's a door with 2 springs, and one spring is still wound up, then 1 person can still open it. It's still heavy, but not full weight. Depends on what kind of door it is. If it's a non-insulated door, obviously it'll be not as heavy as a insulated door. I normally just go into the garage through the house. Measure the spring. Go back out to the van and get what I need. Then go back in a change it out. Save your back buddy. 2. 15 inch radius requires a little bit more head room. 15 inch radius also will operate the door a little bit smoother. 12 inch radius is pretty common. Doesn't require as much head room. Works great also. Hope that info helps! 💯🙏

Thanks for the awesome feedback! I really appreciate it. Yes you can most definitely replace the torsion tube. Depending on where you live, you could buy one from a local garage door dealer. Or even a local lumberyard might be able to get one for you. Look on Facebook marketplace and see if someone is selling a garage door. See if they'll just sell the tube.

Excellent instructions, clear and concise. Fixed my issue perfectly, big THANKS!!
@@TheRedbrush glad to help! I appreciate the awesome feedback. Thanks 👍🏼

No problem!
Please let me know how it goes. 🙏🏼

@@garagedoorgenius thanks much. Is the track same for 15 and 12 inch radius or it is different. I assume it is different
@@sivucit yes, 15 is a little bit bigger.

Great video. Very informative. I learned almost everything I didn’t know about repairing. The bar that goes through the spring broke on mine. Can I replace the bar?
Thanks for the awesome feedback! I really appreciate it.
Yes you can most definitely replace the torsion tube. Depending on where you live, you could buy one from a local garage door dealer. Or even a local lumberyard might be able to get one for you. Look on Facebook marketplace and see if someone is selling a garage door. See if they'll just sell the tube.
