As a second safety, I place vice grips tight against the wall on each end of the tensioner tube. There are cases when the garage door cannot be lowered to be able to place the steel bars on the spring. In that case, I've raised the door all the way up and push the door further up on the bad side and use two (or one) screw drivers to slip the cable back on the roller.. Then take it down, wind correctly and add more tension with the bars. There has to be good tension at the bottom to be able to raise the door and not burn out you motor. This is all dangerous stuff so have to be on your toes.
Wow, that was a rollercoaster! I spent the whole 5 minutes on the edge of my seat watching him fix that door, only to discover it led to nowhere! Classic case of expecting the unexpected. Great video and even better twist at the end.
😂
Worked for me! I didnt need to use vise grips though with the door down, there was no reason to hold it up. Other videos show the fix with the door in the up position but it seems way easier with it down because its like one wrap around the wheel instead of several were you have to keep tension on it. Anyway, glad I didnt have to call a repair service so thank you sir, I salute you.
With it down you have the tension to deal with usually, which is my guess why the other guys do it with it open. ( plus a lot of the time the cable comes off when it’s opened vs closed )
Mine was up and wouldn’t go down. Used a nut driver to take off the tension and a pipe wrench to hold it. Never even loosened the pully bolts, just wound it back on as good as I could. Reapplied the tension, unlocked the opener and ran it up and down by hand a couple times before reengaging the motor. Works great.
As a guitar player, I plucked the cables afterward to see i they were in tune. LOL
Haha were they?
.... gotta B#
😂😂😂
Thanks for pointers. I used a pipe wrench on long rod with one hand while setting cable end into pulley groove with pliars with other hand.
😅
Straight to the point. Thanks for the help
Thank you so much for the video. Tensioned it with an allen key and a friend holding it which worked.
Thank you so much!! You saved us a giant stress and money. Totally worked for us and now we don't have to worry about it. I appreciate you
And what happens when everything has relaxed and broken down for you. How can you relieve the tension of all the springs to leave it at 0 tension and start again?
I mean, if I use the bars and the tension rests on them, can I unscrew the screws and little by little release the tension on the spring with the bars?
I definitely recommend you watch a handful of videos so you have a great idea on how it works in your particular case before attempting it
I have the same situation (left drum came unraveled) but I have 2 torsion springs. Same process? Just focus on left side of door?
You want to watch a couple more videos to be safe as there are a bunch of variations of the repair. The process is similar though you‘ll be dealing with more tension with 2 springs so it’s very important to have the correct tools.
A good repair company should only charge a hundred or two to fix this and is what I’d recommend.
Excuse me, where Can i Get the bars or the pipes that you are using?

Thank you! Easy and quick
About 3 months ago or so I had to replace an OLD cable due to rust at the loop. Your tutorial was very helpful - thanks.
A year prior to that I replaced the cable on the other side with a brand NEW cable, and it snapped at the loop due to rust.
My QUESTION is will I be required to replace these cables annually due to rust? Or is there something else I should be doing as a preventative measure? For example applying WD-40 directly on the loop after it has been installed?
Unfortunately, water does pool in my garage by the cable loops; so that doesn't help. The rubber for the base of the garage door is worn, so that might explain water pooling in the garage.
I live in Ontario, CANADA; so any suggestions and/or thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.
Hey there. The cables should be lasting 15+ years so I’d say the water issue needs to be dealt with first and foremost
Awesome name by the way
@@GarageDoorGuidance
Thanks for your reply and feedback.
Will do so; and thanks again.
Thanks and what if you have an opener
You can detach it or leave it be depending on how far down it is
Perfect. Thanks for the help.
Where is the 1 2 3 from the little wrench coming from?
Not sure what you mean
Thank you! It worked perfectly for me.
Thank you so very much! What a great video!
Good shit, the hardest thing for me was finding a pulley stopper
What do I need to do if the cable keeps jumping off the drum every time I raise/lower the door?
The spring tension is likely incorrect. Is it heavy? How far up does it get before it jumps off the spool ?
So if the door is down and even to the floor do I just put the cable back on the drum? Thanks for the video btw!
Yes, you may need to do both in case the other comes off as you work with it
@@GarageDoorGuidancethanks they are both offline
Then you need to re tension your spring I believe
@@GarageDoorGuidance thanks for the help
If you have two springs, do you want to release the tension on both of them or just the side that the wire is still in place?
You’d release both, one at a time. You need to watch a couple videos with dual springs
I appreciate it. Figured it out
This video saved me! Thank you!!
Very nice 👍👍 watching from Jamaica 💯
I was able to fix my garage. Very clear instructions!
Thanks for sharing, worked perfectly
WELL Done - Thank you for this. Perfect solution for us.
What if you have 2 springs. One on each side as opposed to one in the middle like in the video
I would definitely recommend watching videos on a 2 spring setup
Fixed the garage door thanks brother!
Thank you very much for this video, It really help me.
Thanks! Help me fix my derailed cable. Great instruction and safe.
i have similar problem. But i have two car standard door with two springs. from what i see both the springs still have the tension in them.(same winds on both) which makes me think both springs are attached to same horizontal bar. And your solution should work. Since i have two springs do you think i should use two sets of winding bar and do exactly what you did @1:16 but with two springs at same time.(may be with help of friend on the other side)?
No, do not do that. It works the same way when there are two springs it’s just twice as strong. Be very careful if you’re going to attempt this and also watch multiple videos so you have a good understanding of this type of repair
@@GarageDoorGuidance ohh you mean do not follow your steps? I saw multiple videos but most of them had lost tension in their springs .. mind seems to be present. Yours closely match with the problem I have.. I accidentally removed the cable while installing foam insulation on garage door .. and the door is tilted as one side of cable is now holding the door and trying to pull up.
If you follow the steps you should be able to do it but again be very careful and cautious with every step. You may need to tighten both sides once the tension is resting on the bar.
Depending where you are it shouldn’t too much to get someone over to fix it if you weren’t trying to deal with the tension and danger. Could be worth calling around and asking
@@GarageDoorGuidance thanks when you say tighten both sides you mean the drums screws or the springs? Also since I have two springs do I do same step on both sides or just one side.. if one which side?
Drums, don’t touch the spring screws at all. One side and you can do it from either side. Keep in mind this something that can cause serious harm. Proceed with extreme caution
Great video, help me out a lot. Got it fix
Great vid bro thanks a thousand
I just vise grip the bar, I will try it this way next time.
Bunch of different ways of to do the job, I’ve done that also 👍🏼
Why after you are done is the left side down and there is a gap on the right side?
Not leveled one side was tightened the other was more loose
@@GarageDoorGuidance but doesn’t that mean the tension would have been lost?
@@RobertWojtow are you referring to my video or yours has a gap?
@@GarageDoorGuidance yours. The video shows the right side higher than the left.
If I remember correctly the foundation may not be level there
Help! I used the pliers to hold the door at the highest point, loosened the set screws, and wound it up and reattached to the door (both sides), but when I finished the 2nd side, it completely unwound itself when I let go even though everything was back to normal. What am I missing?
Sorry Dav, I think I know what you did but I can’t advise safely from here
@@GarageDoorGuidance I ended up calling my garage door company, they came out and Immediately saw what happened. My spring was broke in 2, luckily they were able to fix right away, $400 :(
@@DAMCOOLDAV gotcha, $400 is about right for a 2 spring setup ( depending where you are ) glad its squared away
Is that a door to nowhere?
Exactly
What if both cables came off? Assuming the same process just on both sides?
If both are off not likely, with the cables off your spring would likely need to be retensioned
@@GarageDoorGuidance Only one cable came off but I completely lost all tension on my spring. The spring broke and looks like I will need to replace it
Can this be done without those bars?
Not likely
I've tried every size socket and none of them fit on this square type screw head
11 mm spline type
life saver
Great video. Thanks.
My garage torsion spring broke after 18+ years, so I ordered another spring using the SAME SIZE shown on the broken spring. Installed it on my 8ft door which requires 33 to 34 turns. I’m up to around 45 quarter turns and when I lift the door halfway it falls to the floor. I noticed that this new spring did not expand out as far as the previous spring. It’s about 3-eighth inch short of the indentation mark of the old spring. Should I do 33 quarter turns and tap spring to stretch it out to the old spot on the shaft?
What springs are you working with?
@@GarageDoorGuidanceDura Lift 225 x 2 x 26 #2 Red Rt Wind
You have 2 of these on your 15/16ft x 8ft tall door ?
@@GarageDoorGuidance I have 2 garage doors, each door has its on torsion spring and garage door opener.
32-34 quarter turns is what’s required for the 8ft tall doors, if the spring isn’t lifting the door it’s either the wrong spring or placed on the wrong side. The spring has to be placed the correct direction.
One way to tell is to look at the wire end where you wind the spring. It should be facing the header not you. Hope that makes sense
Got me when the door opened to a wall
lol I mean it’s a setup in the warehouse I slapped together real quick, working for now 😂
@@GarageDoorGuidance I know I figured but I really threw me off cause the whole time i thought it would open to sunlight
Much help thank u
Snowed in.
?
Thank you
Thx.
great vid simple explanation making the process so easy to follow. thanks for winding bar safety warning!
You should paint one of these cartoon tunnels on the wall behind the door to nowhere
That would be pretty cool 😅
haha and then he opens the door and there is no hole behind the door 😂😂😂
Magic 😂
But why DOES it come off?
Bunch of different scenarios, most common are that the door bumped something going up or down or incorrect springs
My issue is very similar but each time I open the door over half way the cable loosens and unspools
Spring tension is either too loose or the spring is not on the correct side
Drum, not pulley
Keyword research tells a different story
@@GarageDoorGuidance 🤣🤡

You dont fo a good enough job explaining what you are doing. ""One, two, three", what?
Sorry when tightening the set screws down you don’t want to overdo it so I do 3 turns once I feel tension
Thank you
