Oh man....head banging AND staying focused at the same time is pretty hard. Now I have to watch it again... These nightstands are awesome! And so is this video.
Some great shortcuts for not having a tablesaw and router table. I think a router table and roundover bit would be worth the investment over the effort but that wasn't the point. Great video. The music rocks too!
What I liked the best? Your skills. Old fashioned carpenter's skills. No jigs and nifty watchamecallits, just being handy and knowing what you're doing. Great job.
@@workshoptherapy jigs can be helpful. So, why not? I learned from an old school master carpenter. He could hand plane a deck from a great boat with the surface so even that when he layed a metal ruler on his edge on that deck... not a spec of light would shine through. Very good hand-eye coordination. I see you do the same with that rounding.
Possibly one of the most labour intensive ways to produce the external internal radius I have ever seen. A much faster way would have been to rout an external 45 chamfer, or if you were really tricky you could run a 30 along both external edges, keeping within your scribed markings. You would have very little to remove with a sander then. The internal corners could be very quickly done with radiused mouldings. Very nice end result though.
It was the fastest for me, for the outside corners, it only took a few minutes. As for the inside, there was a problem fitting the router in there. Doing it before glue up meant that I would have a visible seam, which I didn't want.
@@workshoptherapy I had a similar reaction, largely because I really dislike sanding MDF and feel an urge to cough even watching it on youtube. But your approach was very successful in getting the smooth radii for the design. (I'd never seen the sanding attachment you were using for the interior radii)
Very interesting video, but one keep tip is that if you use different materials to build the carcass and then you spray it. You may find that if the unit is put in a room with different humidity you will see the plugs as different materials expand at different rates. Trust me on this as I have experienced it on a high gloss cabinet I made.
I know about that issue. I would've expected that to happen. Surprisingly, after two years and humidity variations between 40 and 85 (don't ask), nothing happened.
Fantastic work! I love mid-century modern and have had such nighstands on my mind for at least a year. I mean literally. Been too busy with other projects to make them but now there shall be no more excuses! Thank you for this inspiration.
I had to pause the video to make this comment. My suggestion is to ease back on the music. It should remain a background element and not come and go from the foreground to the background to replace any other main sound that is going on
Very nice design. Let's talk about dust collection, or lack of!!! Please use a respirator when spraying, not just a dust mask. You need something that can protect you against the fine particles from spraying which only a proper respirator can provide. And MDF dust is the most dangerous type of dust (unless one is also allergic to exotic wood). You need a dust extractor hooked up to your chop saw. Keep up the nice designs.
A planer (jointer), a thicknesser, a belt sander, a thin belt sander, drill, router, orbital sander, circular saw, handheld electric planer, compressor, spray gun. I think that's all :)
It took me around 15 minutes per corner. If you want to sell them, it's probably too long. But I made them for ourselves, so it didn't matter. Three years later, they are still strong, so no splintering issues, as long as they're done precisely
Hi! first of all, great job, awesome design and craftsmanship! Could I ask you what you used on min 12:25 to spray the wood with (was it sealer?) and what is your paint of choice? for both curing times, application? thanks again!
Thanks for the appreciation! I used water based primer in a thick coat as sealer. I usually spray mdf with sealer until it gets glossy on the edges, applying more coats if necessary. I use paint from an Italian maker, ICA. Being water based, the curing time is pretty short, around half an hour for touch and 24 hours for final hardness
belt sander is much more aggressive, which also means easy to remove too much material in a spot if you're not careful. The poster here was using his well.
It is, indeed, absorbed by the mdf, but just very shallow. After that, it dries and hardens the surface, too, besides sealing. The primer has to be thick, though. I used a 2.5 mm nozzle to be able to spray it. I now have a pressurized cup gun which is marvelous for this kind of jobs.
Great work!! I literally just took some screen captures of a very similar nightstand that I saw for sale. Was trying to figure out how to build it myself with the challenge being the curved corners. The way you did the exterior corners seems doable but getting the inside ones rounded seems tricky - would you do the inside corners the same way if you had to do it again? Also, were those braces you had in there temporarily to clamp the extra wood in the corner tight?
Thanks! I think I would do it the same way. Now that I already did two nightstands, I can do it faster and better. The braces weren't too tight, just to squeeze the extra glue out. Mdf tends to stick very very well with pva glue.
I would use rounded moldings: either convex or concave (as WT made himself) - the glue-surface remains the same - and, as mentioned wood-glue on MDF is super-strong.
I like the self-confidence of this guy :)) First I glued it together, then I measured the diagonals :)
Yeah, I do that sometimes.
Absolutely gorgeous!!!
Thank you!
Oh man....head banging AND staying focused at the same time is pretty hard. Now I have to watch it again...
These nightstands are awesome! And so is this video.
3:48 that is amazing. I know it won’t be as easy as it looks but you just sold me on an electric hand planer
Fantastico, il tuo lavoro è arte. Complimenti !!! Un salutone Dall'ITALIA
Grazie!
Very nice result
Thanks!
Great job 👌
Salut from Egypt
Taking in consideration that you don't have a table saw you did a marvelous job 💜💜
Some great shortcuts for not having a tablesaw and router table. I think a router table and roundover bit would be worth the investment over the effort but that wasn't the point. Great video. The music rocks too!
Thanks! I've opted for a cnc, meanwhile. Glad you liked the music.
Love the background music.
Glad you like it, thanks!
The rounding part of the nightstands was simply brilliant...great work....
Amazing work, both for the video and the nightstand 👏
Thanks! I'm glad you liked it
Excelente trabajo, excelente música
Gracias!
Great job
Thanks!
Precioso trabajo, me ha encantado.
Great work Bro 👍
Watching from South Africa 🌍
Thanks! Greetings from Romania!

Thanks!
that is grate job.........and in A very small space
Thanks! It's small, but I've learned to manage it
epic video, epic song, epic skills. Kudos!
Amazing job.
Thanks!
What I liked the best? Your skills. Old fashioned carpenter's skills. No jigs and nifty watchamecallits, just being handy and knowing what you're doing. Great job.
Thank you. To be honest, I like to use jigs too, but I tend to make them myself

Not that accurate, but I've learnt over time, practicing, so there's room for improvement
I admire a lot people like you who can bend and curve the edge of wood perfectly.
Thanks!
beautiful piece of work ❤️
Thank you very much!
Very impressive, great ingenuity. Thanks for sharing! 👍🏿
Thanks for watching!
Cool looking Subwoofer :)

Nice piece of art

That music 🤯🤯🤯
Outstanding job
So relaxing to watch
With basic tools
Keep it real
Thanks! I'm glad you like it

Nice to see all the process, i learned a lot, thanks!
Great work but music is horrible
You can mute it
I like the music 😊
Always wondered how the curves are achieved.
I've learnt today.
Thanks for sharing. It's a beautiful piece and an awesome tutorial.
Thanks! Glad your liked it
It's one of the ways, but there are others as well - bending, kerf bending, cutting out strips of desired shape and gluing them together.
nice and nice music !
Thanks!
Can u tell me who play the music ?
Ethan Meixsell
There's a link in the video description to his page
Imagine if your power tools had a built-in radio playing this music every time they were on! :D
Wow. I'm actually thinking about making one, now :). Like the vacuum that starts when you start the tool
Perfect! Nice job.
Great work! Замечательно!!!
HANDMADE!!!!!!!😊
Indeed
Looks like some Apple product 😁. Love it.👍
Thanks! It does look, indeed, I haven't noticed it until now
Too Good Nightstand 👍
So good
Thank you!
like the music score very much
Thanks! I like it too, but it seems it's not appreciated over all...
@@workshoptherapy I do like your project also, it's cool..

Amazing. Just respect. Handmade. Whats haurs to job. Face result . What price ! 500€ per set?

I liked the music too; just too much of a good thing. 😉
I hv exact same night stand from the furniture store. 600CAD each,.I wish i hv seen ur video early and make them myself
Great work! Looks fantastic! I wonder if one could apply plywood in place of mdf?
Thank you for sharing ideas, also great music!
Thanks! I think it can be done with plywood, too.

Bon travail

wow! 😮
Good work, hats of to you using cheap tools. Good finnish. But please sort your dust collection out mate.
Thanks for the tip
Gorgeous, do u have any plans or measurements i would love to try make those
Sorry, i don't have any plans. But you can adapt the size to your needs. As long as they look proportional, any size should be ok
almost 1:1 like good wood work
Excelente
Thank you!
Super
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Nice work. You might want to adjust your spray settings though -- that is A LOT of overspray!
Thanks for the tip!
Most stellar music my good sir! I too take grear pleasure in playing Lamb of God while my craft is on 😛. Who is the music btw?
Thanks! Not sure about the music. I believe the singer is mentioned somewhere in the description or the other comments
loooks amazing but good lord why did you use MDF?
Thanks! Any other material would have been pretty difficult to shape. Painted, it's a pretty good material.
wow
Thanks!
Looks amazing, great work and skills. Btw what are the exact dimensions, if you could provide them in the comment 🙂
Hello! Thanks! Around 50 cm wide x 45 high x 40 deep, but I'm not sure I remember correctly.
Great work! How did you seal the edges of the MDF?
There's a special sealer for mdf that I usually use. But this time I used simple water based primer, a few coats with intermediate sanding.
👍👍👍
Hermoso y arduo trabajo

Thanks!
Really nice build. Could definitely have done author that music, though.
Just 😯
Muy bueno

Great work, dreadful noise called "music". Had to watch it with the sound turned off.
Thanks! I've noticed a lot of negative comments about the music, so I'll definitely change it in future videos

Nice build, but the music made it nearly impossible to watch.
Thanks! The music is always a difficult choice, but I bet me speaking would make it even worse :)
@@workshoptherapy I doubt it. At least make it not so loud. It really took away the focus, rather than adding to it.
Thanks for the tip,I will surely take care at the next video
Amazing work!
What kind of clear coat did you use for for the drawer fronts?
Thanks! Water based, from ICA
Do you think an orbital sander would work good enough for rounding the corners? Or would it be better to just have a belt sander?
It would definitely be good enough, maybe even better, but it would take much longer
belt sander is much more aggressive, which also means easy to remove too much material in a spot if you're not careful. The poster here was using his well.
Which products did you use for primer and varnish?
What router bit did you use to make the drawer pull cut outs?
It's a special router bit for inset handles. I think googling inset handles router bit should do it
You used water based primer on the MDF? Doesn’t that make the MDF swell?
