I got a LoupeDeck and have been working to consolidate my shortcuts there so I'm just using that and the mouse. When I'm done, I also delete the proxy and optimized media to help save even more space. Hope you have a great trip to Norway!
Thank you for the video and for the hint with the trim start/end, we guess we should abandon the in/out pre-editing in the browser and also dump everything right away in the timeline :D Could you make a video on sound design, maybe explaining your preset in a basic way? The only thing we are using right now is a limiter, but I guess there is so much more (like we saw here)...
I make music videos and FCPX works great for complicated projects i just use storylines and compound clips (similar to premiers "nested sequences") I used to work in Adobe for many years and after switching to FCPX i can't imagine going back i think you will like it more and more. Thank you for trim start and end shortcuts they will change my life :D
I've been using Final Cut since I was basically a fetus and I had no idea about the trim start and trim end shortcuts.... thank you for that!! Awesome vid :)
I've been using Premiere Pro for 3.5 years and literally downloaded the trial version of FCP last week to give it a try after Premier crashing 3 times within 5 minutes during my last project. This could not have come at a better time! Thank you as always Matti! 🇫🇮❤
Honestly man, just getting into Final Cut Pro and I've jumped across a couple of videos but this was by FAR the BEST quick start tutorial. Literally no fluff just absolute pure value focused on efficiency & practicality. So impressed, Matti. Thank you
I started with Final Cut Pro 3 , then when with Premiere Pro, now I’m back to Final Cut Pro and I’m loving it, and thank you for the short cuts and to be better organizer with your library. And project.
Doing keyframing for audio ducks can be done even easier if you use the range tool. Range select and then pull the audio down. It will automatically key the in and out points for you.
Just moving out of premier to FCP. Other tutorials were wasting my time but I couldn't skip a sec with your tutorial. Thanks Matti for the solid foundation for FCP basics video tutorial.
[THANK YOU] Oh gosh, I've been using final cut x since it came out and never really learned it properly. The trim start and trim end commands are FANTASTIC! Completely changed my workflow! [/THANK YOU]
17:04 instead of using an adjustment layer you could select all the clips you want to apply it to and right click and select new compound clip (option + G)
You are speaking our language! Love your casual "work smarter not harder" approach! And yes, Final Cut - hard stop... that works for us! Thank you, we'll be watching more of your videos!
The best thing about this video is that it doesn't only fit FCPX workflow, you can watch it and use things like folders structure or personalised shortcuts to any other software. I personally use DaVinci Resolve, but I do have very similar workflow in some cases. The only thing I can suggest with audio, especially music, is don't always look at the numbers, because music tracks can vary in dynamic range and loudness, so -30 dB can be good for electronic or rock music, but not necessarily for calm ambient music, lo-fi or classical stuff. Use not only your eyes, but ears too, mixing sound can be an art too :) Cheers Matti!
Little tip: Turn off BACKGROUND RENDER in the Settings, especially on the very powerful M1 MacBooks, then you won't have to delete the render files at the end and the library will stay small (always under 50 MB), because it just won't prerender stuff. Works on powerful computers and performance is the same if not better.
11:30 Option + W to insert a blank space on the magnetic timeline. Drag clips above magnetic timeline which will anchor them to the blank placeholder you created. Voila no more magnetic effect ;)
Always used final cut. Never thought about making each project a library. That's going to save me a lot by not bogging down my machine a lot and I can package projects to send to clients easily as well.
I'm going to try this too. Normally I create a new Library for each year - 2020, 2021 etc... and build projects within. It's too cumbersome. So I'll keep my yearly Libraries just for footage organization (a place to unload all footage until needed), and all projects now get their own dedicated Library.
I've never been this early. I just recently started challenging myself to make my cuts in Resolve, but I've been a FCPX user ever since I started editing.
@@ferrisfilms77 Just a personal challenge, to see if an old dog can learn new tricks. And also to see if I can push my creativity out of my comfort zone.
A simple solution to editing to the beat without the magnetic feature screwing you up: you can move the soundtrack to the main timeline and arrange your clips on top without the interference of magnetism.
Believe by default its ALT- [ and ALT- ] instead of Q and W, for anyone who wants the FPX defaults. QW is a carry over from Premiere I think. CMD-B for slicing a clip. Also useful, Alt-T for audio crossfades between clips, especially talking head cuts.
Do you have a master archive of everything you shoot? How do you organize & store non-project footage? Day-to-day moments etc. This is the part I struggle with the MOST - organization & long-term storage strategy. Am I overthinking this? It seems so much easier with still images. Thanks so much Matti!
I’ve been contemplating switching from Premiere to Final Cut for the past couple weeks. I think it’s a good idea while I’m still kind of new to producing videos. This video may have persuaded me that the switch isn’t as intimidating as I thought.
Your tip at 7:40 ish literally is a game changer. I've been editing since I was around 6 years old and not once did I even stumble across a feature this good. Lifetime subscriber for sure.
Nice Video! I also switched from Premiere to FCP half a year ago, and you are right, for simple edits it is really quicker. You probably know this, but you actually can add the conversion LUT before adding your clips to the timeline, without an adjustment layer. Select all the clips you want your conversion LUT on in your library, then go to the information board on the right ( with the info "i") and there you can choose Camera-LUT. This sometimes help to get a better impression of the image when doing “the big drop” before you cut anything away. On the other hand, this could decrease performance depending on your machine. Also, I started to have everything in the Library (project) Container, importing all the files in there. When sharing projects with other FCP editors, I know for sure that everything is in this one file. You can still copy the raw footage out of the container to someplace else if you need to.
I'm very happy about this video for two reasons. Even if I'm not a pro like you, I found out that I almost use FCPX in the right way, then those little tips like Q-W to trim were very useful and I think they will speed up a lot my process... now I need to make a big step to find my color grading signature, but I won't rush my learning path on that! cannot wait for your next video!
Wow, super duper awesome tutorial! From the tips to organize your files, to the workflows, this was by far the best Beginner Tutorial on FCP that I’ve seen yet, and I’ve watched a bunch on YT. Thank you so much!!!
Thanks for the video man. Starting my channel I just jumped in without knowing anything. I would spend hours pulling my hair out trying to edit. This video is gonna be a big help!!
I always used the [ and ] with no command button for trim start and end but I added it to q and w and I made my blade tool E ALSO I used audio lanes a bunch and made the 0 the on off toggle for that and it helps a lot for J and L cuts :)
Thanks Matti. I’m going to learn how to do this if it kills me… I have so many ideas, but don’t know how to edit… I’m at the “I don’t know what’s going on / nosebleed “ stage.
Matti you legend, awesome vid. I’m self taught on FCP (well… RUclips taught) and it’s good to see I’m still doing it right. Nearly exactly as you do - big fan of the big dump too, it’s how I roll. Thanks for the vid man 👏🏻
As someone who's coming from Premiere editing, thank you so much for making this vid! I went from a 2019 Intel based MacBook pro to a fully maxed out M2 Max, and I felt giving FXP a chance was the right move. Who knows, I may ditch everything and change software again... But isn't that a problem we all struggle with?
Super helpful. Thank you! One question with managing the library/folder(s). All of my footage comes from iPhone and a copy of it sits in the iCloud/Photos app. To get it into Final Cut, I'm creating a copy in a local folder. How should I manage this? (I already have the "Leave files in place" option, but this is referring to the files that is in Photos/iCloud) Thanks!
Learned from some you and your brother today. Also I’ve been following you for years on my other channel and didn’t even know you had a brother. His channel popped and I was confused lol. Thanks for always putting out great information
That was incredibly helpful, thank you. When clicking the link in description for motion templates, it takes me to a website with an overwhelming number of options.. I was wondering if there is a specific pack or a handful of those graphics that you suggest. Thanks again!
Great stuff Matti, Ive been using FCPX for several years and know it pretty well but I always like to watch these videos for new tips and ideas for my work flow. Thanks man.
This video is great , I have been using premier pro for years. Recently editing has become sort of unpleasant and tedious for me. I was thinking of switching to Final Cut for awhile to see if that changes things up. I miss editing quick fun videos just for myself and maybe Final Cut will help bring that back. Premier pro has been feeling like to much work to me lately. Thanks for info this will help me get started 👍.
I'm about to use final cut pro for the first time, just watching some workflow videos first and quite honestly it seems that people do a lot of work before putting the clips in the timeline... i just... wanna... put the clips in the timeline!! *whew* thank you, thank you for making me feel like it's okay to do it that way without being crazy. :) For all the same reasons as you, I was hoping to do it the same way you do. I'm feeling more confident now in my smartness, like it's okay to get started. :P :D
Matti - love this as I'm moving my company over to FCP, but I would love you to walk us through how you organize your footage and audio. I have to admit I've almost always gone with keeping my footage in the project file rather than a centralized repository. Would your process change if you were doing more customer work vs vlogging? 24fps for life!
This seems easy enough, i'm using premier pro but I just got the M1 Pro MacBook Pro and its SO laggy with premier. I really wanna switch to FCPX , i hope this transition goes smooth haha, thanks Matti.
It’s been a year since or so since I last looked up Final Cut workflow tips and this video was full of new game changing tips from start to finish. Thanks Matti!
I really appreciated this tutorial. One question I had was whether you use a mouse separate from the trackpad on your Mac. I am a pretty busy person, and I typically just use the trackpad rather than an external mouse to get my other work done, but I’m just getting into video editing as a hobby. Do most video editors use a separate mouse to edit or do they use the trackpad?
Great video. I use GH instead of QW. GH since it's close to JKL, which I use a lot. But I see QW can work great as well. It's amazing how many tutorials of FCP that does not mention the trimming, which is an amazing timesaver.
Just got FCPX, still working with Adobe, but this video definitely came out on the right time! Just hadn't watched it yet til now. lol. But I actually got FCPX. and my 16 inch M1 Mac book pro the day before you released this video. But I was on a backlog of videos. lol.

I would love to see a video of how you set up your MacBook Pro Display for color correction so ace I haven’t really seen any videos on you tube explaining.
You mentioned there where two methods you use to export your project. (Apple Pro Res 422LT) and Export to (RUclips and Facebook) which one is your preferred choice and does it effect the file size of your export? Great Video picked up a few great pointers!
I actually really wanted this but I knew this same thing would be there on another channel , but I definitely prefer to know what your workflow is , so thanks for uploading this
Hey Matti, this video was amazing and very very useful!! I would like to see a color grading video for final cut and all the basics about how to color correct and how to color grade. Also you can mention in another video a few things about other colour profiles in Sony. Most of us we use A7III without a really good slog profiles, or cinetone and most of videos are not explain them so much.
Matti another great video and OMG I wish I new about deleting the generated clip files, I would have saved tons of space on my external. Can I reopen old project and delete them still? Thanks again for the video.
Let me know if theres anything you guys do differently in your workflow and why???
That's a really good tip about the left hand keyboard short cuts. ;-)
I got a LoupeDeck and have been working to consolidate my shortcuts there so I'm just using that and the mouse.
When I'm done, I also delete the proxy and optimized media to help save even more space.
Hope you have a great trip to Norway!
Thank you for the video and for the hint with the trim start/end, we guess we should abandon the in/out pre-editing in the browser and also dump everything right away in the timeline :D
Could you make a video on sound design, maybe explaining your preset in a basic way? The only thing we are using right now is a limiter, but I guess there is so much more (like we saw here)...
Thanks for the explanation, Matti. You don't use Proxy / Optimized media? Prob. because of the M1.
I make music videos and FCPX works great for complicated projects i just use storylines and compound clips (similar to premiers "nested sequences") I used to work in Adobe for many years and after switching to FCPX i can't imagine going back i think you will like it more and more. Of course you do
🙏🏻 😊
17:04 instead of using an adjustment layer you could select all the clips you want to apply it to and right click and select new compound clip (option + G)
I highly suggest using Q for trimming the start, W for just cutting in between and E for trimming the end
I always find it fascinating watching peoples workflows. It’s crazy how different you operate than I do lol.
You are speaking our language! Love your casual "work smarter not harder" approach! And yes, Final Cut - hard stop... that works for us! Thank you, we'll be watching more of your videos!
Literally needed this video, thank you! You’re also the first one so far I’ve seen to explain Library and project through the eyes of a premiere user!
The best thing about this video is that it doesn't only fit FCPX workflow, you can watch it and use things like folders structure or personalised shortcuts to any other software. Quick tip for magnetic timeline: to stop angering your clip you can also hold (~) and drag the clip without reanker it :)
Little tip: Turn off BACKGROUND RENDER in the Settings, especially on the very powerful M1 MacBooks, then you won't have to delete the render files at the end and the library will stay small (always under 50 MB), because it just won't prerender stuff. 11:30 Option + W to insert a blank space on the magnetic timeline. Drag clips above magnetic timeline which will anchor them to the blank placeholder you created. Voila no more magnetic effect ;)
What does Option + W do? I'm on default shortcuts and doesn't seem to do anything.

@@ferrisfilms77 Just a personal challenge, to see if an old dog can learn new tricks. And also to see if I can push my creativity out of my comfort zone.

Great job bro! ONE TIP I'd recommend is using the Range tool on your sound to gradually ease in and out sound levels!
you definitely sold me on Artgrid... I spend ages trying to find matching sequences on other platforms. brilliant tutorial, by the way.
