    I came here for the Bakelite info and you mentioned FILENES BASEMENT! I haven’t heard anyone mention that in awhile. My mom gave me that job too- quality control. HA! . I studied textiles (college) but I prefer collecting pottery and glass. Branching out into jewelry… SO MUCH TO LEARN!
    Oh and thank you for all your videos. I just discovered you earlier this year and now I’m learning so much. ❤️

    Thank you, Dr lori! I always wondered how a person could tell bakelite from other mediums in jewelry and buttons. Your information about the decanter is great and will come in handy, as well as a couple of the other things that you spoke about here. Thank you for sharing your expertise, once again! Love you always!

    Omg. Thanks much. Found some of my grandma's old red handled utensils and was wondering if they might be bakelite! Now I can check, and not ruin them.

    Thank you for helping us understand the value of things. I purchased two Tiffany lights from a store about 20yrs ago. They are not the real ones but you mentioned that some fake ones. They could be worth something. I ck for markings. It stated made in China.

    I see a lot of interesting glass & crystal at the thrift stores. Some of it is gorgeous and looks expensive. But often there's no marks, so I can't tell what I'm dealing with. I definitely pick the items up, look at how the light shines thru, look for seams, and tap them to hear the ring.

      Please take the time to watch my videos on glass. Many of my thrift shop visits talk about glass too and the myth about tinging glass, etc.

    I was told (and have used) "scrubbing bubbles" cleaning spray on Bakelite. No matter the color of the Bakelite object, it will leave a yellow smear on the paper towel used to clean it.
    That said, my question to Dr. Lori is: Will cleaning Bakelite (or testing it) with scrubbing bubbles damage the object? I only used it on some thrift store bangles I bought and it didn't appear to do any damage at all so I have told others about it, but if I have unbeknownst-to-me harmed the bracelets, I want to stop telling people about this simple and safe(?) method.

    • @DrLoriV
      @DrLoriV  2 года назад +1

      Are you a professional restorer? This is how vintage objects get ruined. Who's your source for this information? It matters who "told" you this information! Be careful.

    I have a fascination for buttons. I know they are made of various materials including bakelite. Is there a video on this or can you make one? Is there a market for them as well? Seems like a simple way to make a vintage statement.
