Totally agree with you Paul. My own kdp journey began at the end of March 2021, no sales in April, got my first and only sale in May. Since May I've had an increase month on month, resulting in a dozen sales in Oct. To me I'm a success! I told myself to give it a whole 12 months and to treat this first 12 months as a foundation year. There is so much to learn and there are so many variables at play in regards to making sales. It's a steep learning curve and one that constantly requires hard work, dedication and plenty of self reflection. Unfortunately, a lot of people want a quick rich scheme and granted some out there may have produced a few books and making thousands of sales a month. However, for the vast majority this isn't the case, but do you give up? No, remember you have entered the realm of self-publishing and it requires time and effort. I have over 200 various books, but I'm producing less now and spend more time on research and quality. Don't give up, just keep learning and developing your skills, it will pay off in the end.

*Low content is not easy money* It's that simple. This has been the opposite message for a while on some forums and with some of these new youtube channels that write clickbait titles. Example, make $10,000 from this one niche. Some of them might go into a busy niche but know how to niche down. It's obvious that there is a learning curve and it might take time to start making consistent sales.

I published my first book yesterday. It is coloring book - coloring by number. It is already live (It even didn't took 72 hours ). I will continue. I may have advantage because I graduated in graphic designer 20 years back and I have done already tons of publication and illustrations (for others) and understand typography, layout design & operate whola adobe suite. From now on I will design only for me and no more sell to others. As I am the holder of copyrights I am going for merchandise too (T-shirts, mugs etc.(POD), I am sure it will grow. And I wanted to thank you for this channel, I would never come on Idea to sell KDP without you. So thank you so much.
Unfortunately Andrea you do not have an advantage, you have an enormous headache coming your way. I am a designer and I am trying with kdp for 6 months. I make unique illustrations and artwork with zero sales. And when I see people uploading crap and getting sales,.... I am wondering how??? why???? Literally pixelated badly photoshopped crap gets sales and my vector 2000dpi custom illustration is nowhere.
@@MarinaArtDesign Exactly. My personal take: we HAVE to find ways to point people from OUTSIDE of Amazon to our books. With the millions of books available on Amazon our books have a snowball's hope in hell to be noticed by the casual viewer on Amazon.
@@MarinaArtDesign I have another income too, so I do not rely on sales. And I will do only niches (I needed to find out which are matching with me and are not saturated). And I ment that I have the advantage because I don't have to spend hours for finding out the cover page or choose font as I working with those for years. I mostly working in InDesign or QuarkXPress, not illustrator or PS. I will just scan all my illustrations (too lazy to do clipping path), I will design some coverpages and upload. Everyday one. Let's see.
I happen to think you are at an advantage and your skills will put you in good stead. I know it doesn't guarantee success becasue there are other components to getting sales but I would encourage you to go for it.
@@paulmarles Thank you very much for your mutual support. Your videos are really helpful. So much artists and designers are taking much more emotional approach, but I am thinking differently - it is in the first place a business so it needs to be taken like a business. Doing proper marketing, research about keywords, finding niche, knowing the market and customers is very important. I am learning a lot from you. So thank you again.
You're awesome. Everyone should start by watching this video. The expectations are so out of whack and people just don't get it. It's not magic. It is work and it's not a math equation. There is no one formula. You have to put in the work and time to figure out your own system. Thank you for all your information. You rawk! BTW...I was an RN for 30 years! Nice to have another part of my brain work for now!
It's not about peoples expectations being out of whack. It's the message that has been out there for a while now, that low content publishing is easy to do and easy to make money in. I can show you a dozen youtube channels and videos saying this. This is obviously not a get rich quick scheme but some people are putting it out there that it is exactly that.
@@mical7582 Yes there are. But if you do any sort of due diligence research beyond that, you'll find lots and lots of realistic info as well. I'm on several FB groups where this is nearly a daily post... "...why aren't I making money? I posted my blank notebook with the cutest unicorn almost 10 days ago..." And it's really not just that expectation, which is unreasonable in any business at all, but it's that many of them think the materials and information should just be handed to them, or done for them. That's great if you can get it, but if everyone WERE to watch this video FIRST, they would have a much more sensible outlook on this business in general. The first thing is looking at it as a business in the first place, rather than the get rich quick thing that BAD ACTORS are claiming it to be. So, yeah, part of it is on them... bad YT fake gurus... but, hello? It's on the person receiving the info to size it up, too. If it sounds too easy, you're only getting a small piece of it.
Love your honesty. I just started publishing this week. Totally having fun figuring out the publishing formula that works for me. Looking forward to sharing my success 💪
thank you for sharing this. I have only put out about 5 books and no sales yet which totally understandable as im just starting out but it's great to see these kinds of videos. So they are very handy. HAHA. Looking forward to learning more and watching your future videos. Thanks a Million.
I normally rely on organic sales and consider ads if it is not selling unless it is a very competitive niche then I may start with ads but it's a strategy I rarely use.
Thank you, Paul, for all of your fantastic content! I'm new to KDP and still in the research stage, so your videos have been invaluable. I had my first book idea ready, but when I tried to get content from creative fabrica, I realised there were so many other options that I am now overwhelmed. How do you avoid being distracted by possibilities and stay focused on your first idea?
That's probably the biggest challenge with any online business. Just pick one thing and run with it before moving onto the next otherwise you'll go around in circles!

I just wanted to ask if you ever thought of joining the groups or people who help you to make money on KDP, or as they say. Just wanting to know your thoughts on this.. Keep up the good work
If you have 500 books with no sales, there is something wrong with your content. Not everyone has an eye for graphic design and nice interiors, and not everyone can or will succeed in low content publishing. It's the harsh truth
@@YogaBlissDance it's not something many people want to hear, nor is it said often, but it's the truth. Almost everyone thinks their designs/art/ideas/interiors are great, but at the end of the day, if you haven't made a sale after 500 books, you probably aren't at the skill level where people want to buy your books yet.
@@c.j.5455 To be honest with you, yes I got some sales using ads but the result is a waste of effort, fatigue and time, I've made hundreds of low content books, made three coloring books and one activity book, but the result is poor in comparison to the effort I put in. Maybe there's a secret I don't know, maybe I did it wrong, or maybe I'm not an expert in advertising
I don't know if it is strange, but I make very few sales constantly (2 or 3 each month from different countries and not always the same book). I supposed that they should be going to increase or quit but no one of this 2 things happens.
The only thing that I understand is that I am selling always the first 3 books published almost 2 years ago, in spite of the fact that I improved the quality more and more in the next books.
Blogging and Pinterest? Views on their success and whether worth putting in time. I would rather spend time on study/design/upload. Hi Paul a question from my daughter can I make the books in recycled paper then she will buy one she is all for saving the planet as we all try to do our bit so have I to write to amazon and ask? I'm sure there are others that have thought about the paper and the rainforest. Thank you xx
Your question is so non specific that there is no way anyone can answer. If you are asking when searching should you use all or books, it is all, that is already known fact.
Asking Paul why you haven't made any sales, is like asking him how long is a piece of string. I always see that question in the comments section with no context. Study, study, study!
I am one of those awful people with a visual background and you are right. Always remember the KISS principle. I have seen so many covers that look like pavement pizzas and the fact is that a one-semester night class in basic Typography would sort all of it out. People always make the same mistakes: too many typefaces, too many colours, confusing pictures, just too many and too much. KISS.

Afternoon Paul, Hopefully you’ll see this and point me in the right direction whether you’ve answered it or not or even give a wee update. I’ve had a few sale on one particular book since publishing in this niche 2 months ago. BUT no one has reviewed it 😭 I’m happy with the book from my author copy. How do you encourage reviews? Again thanks for your time,Really appreciate it. Kerry. Edit - also what’s the average ratio between sold and reviewed, I know there are books that have sold thousands yet only have a few hundred reviews.
Hello Paul, I watched several videos of yours regarding the book titles. In one video you mentioned that we have to include our main keyword as the title of our book. But some times, could that have some other practical issues? I have found this keyword. 1) Mothers Day Journal for Mommy I had a look around some top selling books under this keywords. Most of the books didn't have above keyword as the tile or as the subtitle. They had simple attractive titles like (Love, Mom and Me: A Guided Journal for Mother and Daughter). How have they done that? I can put above keyword (original) as my titles, but I am worried that it could reduce my conversions. I think that title of our book should touch customers mind. Above keywords may sound raw to the customers and they might not like that. Really Appreciate Your Opinion.
Hello, I am wanting to create a book where on one page a person can create a sketch/drawing, and on the next page have a place to write notes, details about the drawing, or brainstorm. Great video! Just curious, Paul-- where do you get the statistic that 1% of people make more than $1,000/ month on KDP? Is that just a theory you have or did you read that somewhere?
some of my products have literally disappeared from amazon despite having live status! on the US market it is possible to enter but, for example, when I try to redirect to the uk market, he writes a message from amazon "looking for something? ... (...)" as if there was no product and he writes that it is "live" I cleaned cache but the problem is the same! and I didn't violate any trademarks or anything else, otherwise it would say "blocked" maybe it's a bug from amazon and it will return to normal? I've had it for several days. I noticed that some products also disappeared, so the problem is not only mine. does someone have it too?

Thank you Cyndi. Very true. Best of luck with your books.
I posted my blank notebook with the cutest unicorn almost 10 days ago..."
And it's really not just that expectation, which is unreasonable in any business at all, but it's that many of them think the materials and information should just be handed to them, or done for them.
Thank you, Paul, your videos are helpful.
You're welcome.
Good resource for all, your explanations are always helpful. Unfortunately, I got no sales after three months for work 😞
Love your honesty. I just started publishing this week. Totally having fun figuring out the publishing formula that works for me. Looking forward to sharing my success 💪
Paul, thank you very much for your message today; it was powerful.
He always Motivated us
You're welcome. Glad you found it useful.
I really appreciate this video ! It’s helped me to gain a better clearer picture and perspective in how to continue in my KDP business! Thanks again 😀
You’re welcome. 👍👍
Great video. I greatly appreciate your sincere efforts to keep us inspired.
Thank you. 🙏
thank you for sharing this. I have only put out about 5 books and no sales yet which totally understandable as im just starting out but it's great to see these kinds of videos. It shows me that light at the end of the tunnel. Im lucky enough at this moment to work at a job where I can still work on making books in-between my work duties so that's when I do my most creating. As always thank you for your wonderful informative videos
Your welcome. Glad you found it inspiring. Keep working at it. 👍
Hello , thank you for this video can you make a video about what's kind of books should we prepare for for Q1 ?
Thank you for the suggestion.
Thanks for your video! Just about to get started. Gathering up ideas. This will surely help
Great! Go for it.
I love the comparison with a sportsman or student!
I love your videos Mr. Paul. They help me stay motivated and Be On the right way , tantks so much
Thank you so much for your videos!! You really give me hope about making money online....I've made about 10 books so far and I have so many more ideas thanks to your channel (I'm most proud of my create your own comic book I made I would never have even considered making a book like that before finding your channel)
Wow Thanks for this, just stumbled on this video when I was about to quit, been ok kdp for months now and I read and make research everyday but just haven't gotten any sale, was about stop , this video just gave me a to keep trying , Thanks
Great video Paul! Very positive and uplifting, you have to keep pushing forward to reach your dreams!
Most definitely. Thank you for watching.
Paul, Thank you so much for your easy to follow videos. I have just published my first Notebook. I have watched so many of your videos in the past couple days to learn and understand how the process works. Reviewed the sites you mentioned in the many videos I watched in my notebook. So they are very handy. HAHA. Looking forward to learning more and watching your future videos. Thanks a Million.
Outstanding video today Paul, thanks so much!!!
Thank you too. Much appreciated. 👍
Thanks Paul you explain things very clearly I appreciate your expertise and methods
You're welcome.
Perfect video Paul
I made low low low sales in this month , and I worked hard on it
It does take hard work.
Still haven't sold one book but i still love watching your vidios
Thank you. Keep working on them.
Love your videos, thanks a bunch Paul!
You're welcome Alisa. Glad you enjoy them
Started in May,2022. The only sales are people I sent to Amazon. Also I’ve sold some author copies. Thank you for your videos.
I sell journals with Bible verses with original photo cover.
Thanks for your video, just a question though, would you use ads to get the initial sales or just rely on organic traffic
Excellent video, thank you for the great advice 😀
You're welcome. Glad you found it useful.
Your videos are awesome and I see you have learnt the KDP platform very well and are sharing your knowledge. I myself followed your videos and published my first journal. I just wanted to ask if you ever thought of joining the groups or people who help you to make money on KDP, or as they say. Just wanting to know your thoughts on this.. Keep up the good work
I am looking into creating some sort of group at some point.
i published more than 500 books but no sales, not easy to work for more than one years without revenue, we have to pay our bill
Same here. I tried activity books, logbooks and simple notebooks with keyword research. Lots of hours, lots of work, barely any sales. 😔
If you have 500 books with no sales, there is something wrong with your content. Not everyone has an eye for graphic design and nice interiors, and not everyone can or will succeed in low content publishing. It's the harsh truth
@@c.j.5455 True, it's not just about quantity folks! It's multiple factors you really have to study and have several skills.
@@c.j.5455 To be honest with you, yes I got some sales using ads but the result is a waste of effort, fatigue and time,
I've made hundreds of low content books, made three coloring books and one activity book, but the result is poor in comparison to the effort I put in.
Maybe there's a secret I don't know, maybe I did it wrong, or maybe I'm not an expert in advertising
Doc Marles
I don't know if it is strange, but I make very few sales constantly (2 or 3 each month from different countries and not always the same book). I supposed that they should be going to increase or quit but no one of this 2 things happens.
The only thing that I understand is that I am selling always the first 3 books published almost 2 years ago, in spite of the fact that I improved the quality more and more in the next books.
You sell a total of 2-3 each month? If so, it would be hard to discern any pattern.
My journals are starting to sell; I have 6 journals so far and 2 books. I'll be writing more soon.
Blogging and Pinterest? Views on their success and whether worth putting in time. I would rather spend time on study/design/upload. Been a blogger and Pinterest user for years, but it is very time consuming and often doesn’t leave me time to get on with new book designs. Can you get sales just through Amazon - keywords etc? Thanks
Absolutely you can but my next video will be about those types of methods of getting more views on your books.
Loving your videos thank you so helpful.
I did have one question if you don’t mind
My first book I sent in oct 1 and I emailed to have more percent of look inside but nothing yet😳 how long does it usually take? Do I email them again or is this normal
Thank you
I don't know how long it normally takes as I'e never requested that. If you've not heard by now send another email as they are normally very good at responding.
Hi Paul a question from my daughter can I make the books in recycled paper then she will buy one she is all for saving the planet as we all try to do our bit so have I to write to amazon and ask? I'm sure there are others that have thought about the paper and the rainforest. Thank you xx
There is no option for that. I don't know if they use recycled paper.
I would be happy to make just one sale a month.
Thanks for giving confidence
*Make a detail video on how to make free cover with same dimension of your interior in website or MS Word with specific images.*
Here i am , Got no sale in
last month :(
Paul please i wanna know for the keyword research should I research from all or books please heeelp
Very true and good advice. Thank you.
KISS.
Pavement pizza 😆 I like that one. And your absolutely correct.
Thanks Paul, Hi from Istanbul Turkey
Welcome from Turkey!
Hi Paul, so do you recommend to keep in mind wait at least 2 to 3 years to start selling?
No. It is more like two years to build a full time income but you should start getting sales well before that.
Wow, i thought i was weird as a medical doctor who wanted to pursue kdp books because it marries many of my hobbies, but omg you're officially my idol now. Lol
Haha, thank you. You're not weird at all!
I am half blind and have taken weeks to do my covers I had to learn how to use the Canva on top of it . How can I get you to look at mine before I publish them?
You can DM me on Instagram but I only have the resources to check one as I get so many requests.
@@paulmarles Thank you I have had great feedback on one of them but really confused on the spine how to And then how to make my title / subtitles perfectly in the middle do they don't look really uncentered
I spend 3 to 4 hours making and producing covers and interiors, with no sales... imma keep producing in hopes that maybe I'll get lucky 😕
Same here but we should not stop
Same here. A few sales from friends. I'm hoping the holidays turns things around...
I just put up 4 but I’m concerned people won’t see them.
@@karenduey9675 Keywords search make a difference too
Same here.
Hello Paul,
I watched several videos of yours regarding the book titles. In one video you mentioned that we have to include our main keyword as the title of our book. But some times, could that have some other practical issues?
I have found this keyword.
1) Mothers Day Journal for Mommy
I had a look around some top selling books under this keywords.
You could try either way. The issue you may find is that your books don't appear at all when people search for them but why not experiment.
@@paulmarles Thank you.
Hello, I am wanting to create a book where on one page a person can create a sketch/drawing, and on the next page have a place to write notes, details about the drawing, or brainstorm.
The problem I’m having is that KDP only seems to allow one type of page for a book at a time. It it even possible for me to combine a sketchbook and a notebook?!
If so, could you please let me know? Thank you.
Yes, you can do what you're suggesting. You can create an interior where every page is differetn if you wanted.

That’s great! I’m completely new at The Whole thing. I guess I’ll look back and try to go through the process in more detail. Maybe I missed a step.
How are orders fufilled? In terms of printing and shipping? For low content books, does amazon take care of the entire process once it is uploaded?
Amazon takes care of the entire proces.
I was textile technologist for 25 years 😀. KDP 2.5 years so I have room to grow 😉
Definitely!
Hello Paul. Fantastic KDP info, btw. Quick question. Should I still market my Sketchbook on Amazon even though Amazon completely ruined my thumbnail image. FYI... my current Amazon thumbnail looks dull, old, scary looking, matte, etc. Yet, my thumbnail image that I uploaded into my KDP account looked glossy, fantastic, etc. Again, should I go ahead and market it anyways? Thanks in advance for any help you can provide. -Vandale
I saw on one of your videos where you said that you are doing a January challenge which I would love to take part in. Are there any apps/training I should have or complete prior to January so I can be as prepared as possible to gain maximum learning. Thanks
I would love to know more about this January challenge !!!!

Hi Paul, I have spent the last 2 days trying to get my Book Bolt cover approved in KDP...uuuuuuggggghhhhh. It keeps telling me the size is not right. It appears to be right all the way up until "Review" actually and then I get this message. Your expected cover size is 14.034x10.417 but the submitted file size is 12.520x9.250. Please help me, I have am at my end trying to find out why it keeps looking like the finished product has space at the top. I'm dying here...HELP!
What is the dimension of your book and number of pages. You need to download and use the correct template size. 12.520x9.25 is for a 6x9 book with 120 pages.
Thank you Paul
You're welcome.
Can anyone tell me why only my childrens book shows on my public author profile but not the non content books? I went to author central too adding the books and though it says they got added, they don't show anywhere. They went live a few weeks ago already.
I don’t know why that would happen if they had the same author name and you claimed them.
@@paulmarles Thanks. I don't know either. They all show up in my kdp bookshelf. It's a mystery.

Hello sir.
I want to ask you how to avoid the account close out, after someone registers the rights of the nish.
I have noticed that many people were working on niches without rights, but after a while one of them registered the niches then reported the books their accounts were closed.
So how can i avoid this if someone buys the nich rights after i lunched my book ?
Which video will you recommend to me as a beginner
Very frustrating, 11 low content books on amazon and zero sales 3 weeks later.
11 is a very small number. This is a business and skill that nees to be learned. You need to create, experiment and learn what works and what doesn't. And learn about cover design, SEO, keywords etc.
hi Paul and thanks for your advices, please can you do a video to show us the different ways to advertise books that have swear words and profanity content like the sh*t password book etc....
Good day Mr Paul. I created an Amazon kdp account but I have not been given a recieving account. How can I resolve this please?
You would need to contact KDP support.
Pls sir is it possible for me to have sales to my book I designed using a book bolt? I used every available tool but I am afraid. I just need someone to give me hope that used book bolt and got sales
Yes, you can get sales with books designed in Book Bolt.
I started last month and I'm up to 7 sales so far. However, I'm spending a butt load in Ad spend.
I have 4 books (3 kids coloring books and 1 journal) on Amazon and it's been 6 months still not a single sale.
Experiment with those books and create more.
@@paulmarles The books I have upl.oaded are nowhere to be seen. Even I cannot find them when I search.
