  • How to reset the mechanical odometer in your Toyota truck or 4runner to whatever you want.
The SR5 gauge cluster swap is a very desireable and easy swap. You won't ever find two gauge clusters with the same mileage on them though. You can't retrofit the odometer from a non-SR5 cluster into an SR5 cluster because it won't have the trip meter like the SR5 one does. So your only option other than putting a bogus mileage odometer into your rig, is to correct the new odometer to match your old one.
Most laws on odometer correction revolve around the intent to commit fraud. Most states allow (but you better check it out for yourself) an owner to correct or repair an odometer as long as it's a true and accurate representation of the mileage on the vehicle. Hell, Oregon even has a procedure you can follow if you just want to reset it all to zero. (involves a sticker on the door frame indicating that the odometer has been reset.)
All the clusters in this video came out of 1984-1988 4-cylinder 22R series (22R, 22RE, 22RET) Toyota trucks or 4runners. You can't switch between 4cyl and V6 clusters due to tachometer and wiring harness incompatibilities. There may also be some compatibility issues between the turbo engines and trucks that came with automatic transmissions. The turbo and automatic wiring harnesses are different than the trucks that came with 4 cylinder & manual transmissions. It's not impossible, but you'll have to fool with the wiring harnesses to make them work. If you have a 1984-1988 4cylinder manual transmission truck, any SR5 cluster from any other 1984-1988 4cyl manual trans truck will drop in and be a plug and play deal (after you run the tach wire.)
To make the tachometer work in a rig that didn't have a tach to begin with you will need to run a wire from the tach inspection wire that comes off the coil to the back of the new cluster. You can either wire it right into the harness after you establish which slot it should be in, or you can just put a connector on the wire and screw it to the back of the tachometer input screw on the back of the cluster (see picture at the end of this video.
Lastly, you MUST use an oil pressure sending unit that was designed for the gauge style instrument cluster. If you had an idiot light style gauge package and you drop in an SR5 Gauge package and hook it up to your old oil pressure sending unit you will DESTROY the oil pressure gauge in the SR5 cluster. Make sure you have the proper oil pressure sending unit before you put power to that gauge. If you can just unscrew the oil pressure sending unit from the donor truck you got the SR5 cluster out of. If you have to go buy one from the auto parts store make sure they know it's the sender for the GAUGE STYLE cluster (not the idiot light style). You'll want the "Yazaki Meter" compatible sender.
