I remember watching this 6-7 years ago and being sad I couldn’t do cool turbo upgrades and FMICs because all I had was a 03 NA Mazda 323F at the time. Now I’m on the other side. Got a sweet 2016 turbo sports car, FMIC, HKS BOV and just did a big turbo upgrade. You guys inspired me to always keep my dream alive and it’s not just a dream anymore. It’s real, it happened and it’s great!!!
I love going back to these older videos even back to the red micra videos, to watch how far you guys have come. The videos have always been amazing, but man the video quality sure has come a long way.
brandon hakki I've got a Hyundai Getz, 1.5 Crdi turbo diesel. It puts out 110bhp stock, I've got it aggressively remapped and got a free flow exhaust as well. It puts out around 160bhp now. Maybe a little more, It was 154bhp after the remap, I haven't checked after removing the cat cons and installing the free flow exhaust. I'm thinking of fixing a slightly bigger turbo, something that will help bump up my figures to 200bhp. I have 205 section tyre's already and am planning to upgrade my suspension soon. I don't have an endless supply of cash and hence would like to know, what Turbo charger would fit as a bolt on with no changes to the manifold etc. Do I have to install new injectors and a blow off valve? Can someone give me an estimate for the turbo supporting mods please?
just earlier today i came across this channel and i have to say, i get a kick out of the fmic harp EVERY SINGLE TIME! brilliant show fellas, keep it up
I think that was just so they got a rough idea of what needed to be cleared, then made the hole around it bigger just in case. Or they just said "Fuckit" and made it bigger.
"putting old bolts inside hoses to stop the leaking". oh my god thats so brilliant! ive always just crimped the hose in half a clamped it but that looks heaps easier. this is another reason why i love MCM
hey guys, you should try out PB Blaster in future videos. It's supposed to be better than WD40 and I use it all the time. I never had luck with WD40, bolts would continue to strip off. So, my dad introduced me to PB Blaster and I haven't stripped a bolt since. It's a really good product. I'm not trying to advertise, but I'm pretty sure it could help you guys out with all the rusty cars you guys work on.
Funny how the TD04 is considered a tiny turbo for nothing more than some punch down low on Subarus. On a Fiat/Abarth engine the TD04 actually a huge upgrade even from the 180hp setup, allowing for 250+hp.
I started to watch your videos a few days ago when trying to figure out what turbo i should fit in my car(If one at all) And i have to say, your videos are really great. I wish you guys had a real Tv show, with super sponsors, so you could do all kinds of crazy stuff.
U guys need to do a video of eBay intakes vs name brand $200-$300 intakes and see if there is any difference in power!!!! Like this comment if want to see them to do one!!!!!
hcracer1985 cold air intakes , usually help with forced induction means like a supercharger , you don't really use them just in their own because you might make like 2hp but they are meant mainly to keep humidity out of your engine because that means less power and are bigger than stock intakes so you can have more air going in
It is highly recommended that you do supporting mods when increasing boost but not necessary. It really depends but yes you are pushing your engine more by upgrading turbo
angel olivares how would you do that!? I have a dodge neon srt4 with bov, bigger intercooler, slightly bigger injectors, waste gate actuator, throttle body 62mm, downpipe and diablo sport trinity tune. Stock turbo. If I want to get bigger turbo should I change something else!?
Daniel Rodriguez Thats actually a pretty good setup to handle a bigger turbo and is what I meant by supporting mods. I guess I assumed you were going to upgrade turbo with everything else stock seeing as how factory turbo engines have intercoolers like you mentioned in your original comment. You're should watch the mcm vid of turbo supporting mods, more detail there
Daniel Rodriguez I'm not an expert, as I right this my car is at a tuner (I don't have the tools to remove the engine). However, my dad has taught me about cars since I was a kid, worry about Air Fuel ratio. If your running on the "lean" side it means you should have more fuel for the amount of air there is. Running rich isn't nearly as dangerous. Running lean leads to detonation, which leads to one final detonation. Always make sure you have enough fuel for your setup.
+Dennis Leslie Definitely does do something, gets into the threads and loosens things up. Currently doing that with a project car and without it i wouldnt have the progress im at currently.
Turbo kits are an amazing way to enhance the performance of a car. When installed the right way, a turbo kit dramatically reduces the emissions levels of a car apart from adding to the performance. These kits are highly useful for people living in hilly areas.
I find myself forgetting how well they know their stuff when it seems most of the time they're joking around and just having fun with whatever project they're on
My turbo pushes more boost than yall can hold in your tires and its made by the greatest turbo company. Garrett. With a custom wicked wheel to a 5in straight pipe. You guessed it. I own a 7.3 powerstroke turbo diesel
You do know that turbos don't have identifying numbers on them. Yes, they have a code that tells you the model, but there is no way to link it to a particular car or owner. They most likely ground the numbers off because they had reconfigured the housing, thus customizing it and making the identification number meaningless.
These guys not only both work, but they also used to take viewer donations on their website and sell the cars on when they're done to fans of the show. Not only that but they are affiliated with RUclips, hence the adverts, at RUclips's rate of paying they've earned over 30,000AUD from RUclips views. And they've been doing this for 4-5 years. Plus they don't seem to smoke or drink which helps save dosh. THUMB IT UP
The chevy cruze has become the AR of cars...? In America. You guys do the best upgrade videos. I hope to see a 1.4l chevy cruze video in the future. I will be watching every video like allways.😎
You guys are the greatest. Hitting on all the nitche small question video ehow junk i could imagine. I can't wait to leave the military and just work on my cars.
The WRC cars don't use top mounts, they use what is called a V mount (the radiator and the inter-cooler make a sideways v that points toward the front of the car). The scoop is there for show. The real hero is the vent cut in front of the scoop, air comes in through the grill and out the vent with the inter-cooler between,
You will for two reasons, a turbocharger is an obstuction until it's spooling the bigger it is the harder it is to turn. The mechanical spooling up of the turbocharger takes longer due to larger mass of the wheel. That's the first reason, second reason is more air requires more gas, so you will need to tune more fuel. Boosting even at the same psi you will be using more gas as more cfm's are making their way into the engine. If you keep your foot out of it there won't be as big a difference.
Today as people begin to understand, how to better tune an engine you will find that as long as there is adequate fuel, cooling and the engine doesn't ping, on a moderate boost setting (around 6psi) engines will last for hundreds of thousands of kilometres. Regardless of the gasket, again explain to me why you would both install a thicker 'copper gasket' while also replacing the pistons, when both actions will have the same effect of reducing compression.
doing my first Subaru lmao I have a whole new respect for them now. I have a 2002 forester with a EJ20X motor with VF45 turbo. struggling with the harness now but with a e85 tune on 1000cc injectors the Quad AVCS and twin scroll its gonna be choo chooing like a champ soon. I WANNA A PIECE OF GRAMPS LOL
Hey guys I have a big issue with big turbo modifiers. You correctly state that other mods are need to take advantage. I'd like to see a myth buster on big turbos, just changing the turbo (not pressure setting) and measure the power difference and any other effects. Engine power is generally made from boost pressure and not turbo size, the engine cares not what size the turbo is only the pressure (and temperature) in the manifold. As power evolves up smaller turbos become less efficienct and general more heat, but heat is generated by compressing air anyway (irrespective of turbo size). A good example is the Volvo red block with its TD04 13C, its perfectly capable of pretty much any level of boost for a standard engine at the top end. An estimate of benefit to go bigger is around 220BHP, but you might need more fueling to get to that, so I'm thinking that there is no benefit in only upgrading the turbo. Some modifiers talk about more flow, but I believe this is a myth. What is hard to quantify is the amount of heat produced due to inefficiency, that might affect the power.
Yes, front mounts don't make enough of a difference until over the 300hp limit for wrc. Requiring also to compress the air in the entire piping and i/c before boost builds at the motor. much like a compressor taking longer to fill a bigger tank, a larger compressor would go better with a larger tank
It's more than 30k, SocialBlade stats confirm that. Nevertheless, they stated in the Q&A episode that they keep circulating the cars. It's a good watch, definitely recommended :)
Love to see more video done on the Forester! Some cosmetic stuff and more modds such as fuel pump, leads , plugs, intercooler and injectors. Would love to see what a few more mods would do. Your 180kw now, be sweet if that could help hit the 190-200
Saab 9 5 turbos is td05/gt1752 and they have plenty of torque and high end. And that's the linear 2.3L 12 or 1 psi and I bought one from eBay put 50,000mi on it and it still ran strong. Absolutely zero loss in performance, it actually felt like it was breaking in and spooled up faster every oil change
Errr no it's a TD04 15T stock on the B205R, B235R and B235L engines actually. The rest are GT17. In my stage 3 BP tuned 9-5 Aero boost comes on at about 1800RPM and it pulls hard all the way to the red line. So TD04s are good turbos for a basic tune, depending on the variation of it they can go up to about 350HP (19T). I don't know what version these Subies use though, could be a smaller one than on the Saabs.
Niklas Bergsten well I had a B235R and the turbo that was taken off to be replaced was a Garrett and I got a eBay gt1752s and it would spool up faster and produce full boost throughout the entire power band. It was a circular 3 bolt turbine housing and went to a 3" v-band downpipe.
who knew i'd own a WRX later in life when i watched this in 2012 i was thinking i wanted one so bad.. 2018 now im driving one.. and just ordered a turbo!
Looking back in time I always wanted wrx so I got one. I’m happy I don’t live over seas, taking that turbo off with having the brake booster/steering fork in the way would’ve been a pain
Since you are a Holden fan google CAPA perfomance, LS1 'standard engine' single turbo upgrade. Then after you finish reading that google big cc racing which makes a kit to bolt onto a standard Hayabusa engine (which has a compression ratio of 12.5:1). Both these kits have been installed to countless cars and bike with no issue on reliability. It is clear from the language you've used that you have no idea what you are talking about, I was just trying to help you out a little with proper info.
I also never get tired of Moog playing the intercooler like a harp.... I don't know why, but it kills me every time!!!
+Patrick Morrissey it is because it is awesome :)
Never gets old!
really good editing actually yes :)
I remember watching this 6-7 years ago and being sad I couldn’t do cool turbo upgrades and FMICs because all I had was a 03 NA Mazda 323F at the time. Now I’m on the other side. missing serial code on the turbo
totally means it wasnt taken off a stolen car
brandon hakki do stock turbos normally have vins?
Stock ones
Yes
brandon hakki so? 400 bucks m8
brandon hakki shhh
brandon hakki I've got a Hyundai Getz, 1.5 Crdi turbo diesel. It puts out 110bhp stock, I've got it aggressively remapped and got a free flow exhaust as well. It puts out around 160bhp now. "You ever had something fall out of your engine bay while driving?" "Uh, just an engine"
Hey Mighty Car Mods, just in case you didn't already know, that rag actually says, "Road Safety" on it. XD!
Thanks man I was scrolling through the comments to find out what it said it was gonna drive me crazy.
draws neat area for waste gate piping... completely ignores it and cuts off whole side xD
+Jacob Mortensen
Yes that was quite funny.
draws template to clear Wastegate Actuator Rod - then realised the Rod bends and needs more clearance to function ;)
just earlier today i came across this channel and i have to say, i get a kick out of the fmic harp EVERY SINGLE TIME! brilliant show fellas, keep it up
3:25-3:40 had me in tears, do we now know the origins of cheryl?
What if sneezing..was just a human blow off valve?
You don't sneeze after a quick sprint.
But you huff and puff :) lol
***** But not sneeze
farting is the human blow off valve
tavi921 that's only if your rings are worn lol
lol at the tiny bump line you drew for modifying the heat shield and then just ended up cutting a big square out
I think that was just so they got a rough idea of what needed to be cleared, then made the hole around it bigger just in case. Or they just said "Fuckit" and made it bigger.
I never get tired off watching Marty try not to laugh, while Moog is going off on something..... Hahahaha!
I need a t-shirt with the text "You need big balls! Big ball bearings!" And a picture on a turbo :D
"Overdrive" by MOOG Habitat Remix. It's on the album "The Sea Brings Rivalry" on itunes or the MCM shop.
"putting old bolts inside hoses to stop the leaking". oh my god thats so brilliant! ive always just crimped the hose in half a clamped it but that looks heaps easier. this is another reason why i love MCM
Under that car is sooooooo clean
on he's place dont have rain
or he cleaned that car completly
Muhammad Rifal Junior Is that English?
Daniel Ford Give the guy a break, he's obviously foreign.
Aspire i didnt know youtube was a specific country c:
John Fisher English* where* things*
Lmao I was dying when he played the intercooler like a harp!!!!!

The edit on the install is amazing.. Taking it out is one thing.. now putting everything back well that's the fun part. 7hrs later ...
they call it "dump pipe" ...everyone else call it downpipe..
I call it dump
Dump pipe is what most call an external wastesgates exhaust if not recirculated.
30spooln
nah thats screamer pipe
30spooln what Matt Sawers said. an external wastgates's ehxhaust f not recirculated is actually a screamer pipe
Sitha Puth Proper JDM vocabulary!
It's gonna be maAAAAAaaAAAAAaaaaaaAAAAAAAAA
I love how Marty managed to stay with a straight face after ^THAT.
Read this as it played out, haha

Candisa well relative to the size of the engine and car, yeh it's all relative.
i highly doubt you will get that power to the wheels on those tiny engines.
@@connorcox259 1.6 or 1.8 Will be able to Lower engine sizes not sure , atleast the 1.8 20vt Will but that's VAG :')
I was waiting for them to talk about a tune.. great job guys. Love that Forester

And i have to say, your videos are really great.
I wish you guys had a real Tv show, with super sponsors, so you could do all kinds of crazy stuff.
missing serial numbers/code on the turbo. is it stolen?
Probably just sanded off, because mods.
All their stuff is stolen.
Have you never wondered why they never film in the same location twice in a month?
Modded hybrid turbo's or repaired turbo's with internals get sold without or with the company which reconstructed them
No they just filed the numbers off for weight saving. Every gram counts.
U guys need to do a video of eBay intakes vs name brand $200-$300 intakes and see if there is any difference in power!!!! Like this comment if want to see them to do one!!!!!
Its already been done...
The only problem with cheap ebay intakes is, under pressure, poor weld snots can break off and enter your engine. (Not Fast n Furious style JR.)
hcracer1985 cold air intakes , usually help with forced induction means like a supercharger , you don't really use them just in their own because you might make like 2hp but they are meant mainly to keep humidity out of your engine because that means less power and are bigger than stock intakes so you can have more air going in
Shout out to anyone watching this in 2019
chop shop turbo upgrade, pesky serial number scraped off
I remember watching this 7 years ago when it came out for funsies.
Now I'm rewatching in prep for a turbo replacement on my 2004 STi
It's a good thing i already know about cars because some things they say on there channel can be misleading, but they are great.
has anyone ever seen a pic of the famous Cheryl?
Moog/Tuning Fork ride her in the Gramps videos when they head up to Turbo Yoda's place
You guys should do a DIY on a Rotary.
can you guys do a turbo diesel
You guys are the best diy car modders!
8:24 Years! It has been -YEARS-! I now finally get it!! Thank you!!
"Just an engine" xD
that turbo is stolen for sure
you forgot to say oil prime the turbo!!
Or just being a person in general.
McM have really helped me out a few times when I've gotten stuck on my build.
you guys have come a long ways with your vids! full proof
What a clusterfuck of an engine bay....I'm glad my Toyota has tons of free space.
DjRjSolarStar What Yota?
JL Cannone ae86 lol
DjRjSolarStar ever worked on an aw11 mr2? Forrester has shit loads in comparison!
So, if I upgrade the turbo, do I have to upgrade the intercooler, i.e., should I be worried about pushing the engine's limits?
It is highly recommended that you do supporting mods when increasing boost but not necessary. It really depends but yes you are pushing your engine more by upgrading turbo
angel olivares how would you do that!? I have a dodge neon srt4 with bov, bigger intercooler, slightly bigger injectors, waste gate actuator, throttle body 62mm, downpipe and diablo sport trinity tune. Stock turbo. If I want to get bigger turbo should I change something else!?

Do the turbo supporting mods first!! Your current turbo will benefit from these and you will get bhp gains.
Spraying WD-40 on the head of a bolt is going to do squat.

Wow that was the most informative turbo vid on RUclips. Thanx guys!
Didn't disconnect the battery. That's dangerous
They're like the Germans but from a different part of the world.
whats turbo?
It just makes ur car faster with compressed air
it was a joke, but thanks anyways lol
Hahaha alright then
2020 and still love the vids whether old or new ...
I find myself forgetting how well they know their stuff when it seems most of the time they're joking around and just having fun with whatever project they're on

sry for bad englisch I am German.
This is the best intro you guys have had :) love the spanner action :p
Love the music in this episode, Moog creates amazing tunes!

moog literally explined how to put a turbo rag in the hole, Love it
welcome to the MCM club. HONORARY MEMBER FOR LIFE =)
I love the vt250 in the backround as well as the car, haha! Good stuff, funny guys, not bad at all, keep it coming please.
Same sauce same content ...killer combo
You dodge my questions and change the subject every time things get tough, typical of an engineer.
Installing a turbo is nothing like how easy you guys make it look. I just put in a vf52 in my sh fxt, and the oil dump took me 2h to connect.
this is my new favorite channel
You guys just made the best Subaru Forester XT commerial aroudn :)

Commenting because it's a really old video! Blast from the past
LOL .. I love how Moog marks the heatshield precisely to the size of that water pipe, twenty seconds later Marty brings it back with a big old :D
It was for the waste gate actuator rod
oops . either way.. cut nowhere along the line :P
LOL you make me laugh brother. Nice sense of humor. I just love it. Thanks for the clip men.
doing my first Subaru lmao I have a whole new respect for them now.
Watching this again cos I just got a new 2018 STI, yay subey squad! Also missed the driveway videos! 😍
It's more than 30k, SocialBlade stats confirm that. Nevertheless, they stated in the Q&A episode that they keep circulating the cars. It's a good watch, definitely recommended :)
That subaru looked good jacked up
does moog still have the forester?
you guys make the best videos.
you have inspired me to become a car mechanic!!!!!!!
how could anyone dislike mcm??? this is really making me go MAAAAAD !!!
Thanks Marty for getting Moog a Forrester I'm saving up for one and possibly do a turbo upgrade and exhaust and later a full still swap
Dont forget to prime the turbo with oil before operating under load. I'm surprised this wasn't mentioned, unless I just missed it.
2:19 DAAAAAAAAAYUM NIGGUH THAT WAS 100% FLAWLESS

I love how the divorced pipe partially bypasses the catalytic converter haha awesome
"have you ever had stuff fall out of your engine bay before?" "naaa just an engine." LOL
they used them much later then the 1990s. The late model impreza before the shape change used front mounts as well. In several different forms.
