I once got yelled at by the owner of a dvd shop for opening the case to check the disc. He was all "I have quality stuff. You don't trust me. I don't trust you. You could be stealing" and I'm near tears cause I just came to have a good time and get some cool stuff but was being treated like I committed a horrible crime by wanting to see if a copy of the Charlie's Angels movie was in good condition! I dropped the armload of dvds at his feet and walked off. Next time I went to where that store was, it was long closed down. Guess he pulled that act with too many people.
If you're buying a car, you're gonna want to look at the engine and would think something is strange if they didn't let you look at it. It's no different than with a Blu-ray or a video game.
@@HunterBoldingVideo Exactly! Also I don't know how I would have reacted to that first scenario with the price changing. That's not how pricing stuff works!
That's a shame. I've been to Goodwills where they ask me to check the discs before I buy them if I forget.
@@actualnotanewbie I have found so much killer shit at Goodwill for ridiculously reasonable prices. It's really a cave of treasures if you have the right eyes.
I think taking plastic off dvd to open it is wrong if there was no plastic then you should be able to look also you can’t tell by looking things look bad and no problem and I’ve had perfect looking new discs that won’t play. That’s why I don’t like GameStop I want to open my own
if someone told me "well it's x $ on ebay" I'd just tell them I'll go buy it from ebay then.
Yeah, if I’m driving or walking down to the store, that’s me paying “shipping” on whatever I’m buying.
I have thankfully never encountered this bullshit
It’s like trying to sell toys at a toy store where they low value.
If they won't let you look inside the case (pawn shops), they know the discs are messed up or worse, filled with dead roaches and cockroach droppings.
Bait and switch is ILLEGAL.
The legality of a business charging more than the price marked on a product varies by jurisdiction, but generally, it is considered illegal and falls under consumer protection laws. Here are some key points regarding this issue:
## General Principles
1. **False Advertising and Overcharging**: Most jurisdictions have laws that prohibit businesses from charging more than the advertised or marked price. This practice is often referred to as "false pricing" or "overcharging" and can lead to both civil and criminal penalties. For example, California's Business & Professions Code § 12024.2(a) makes it unlawful to charge a customer more than the price advertised, posted, marked, or quoted for an item[3].
2. **Consumer Protection Laws**: Many states have specific consumer protection laws that address pricing accuracy. These laws typically require that the price charged at the register must match the price displayed on the item or on a shelf tag. If there is a discrepancy, consumers are generally entitled to pay the lower price[11].
3. **Penalties for Violations**: The penalties for overcharging can vary. In California, an overcharge over $1 can be considered a misdemeanor, punishable by fines and potentially imprisonment. Lesser overcharges might be treated as infractions with smaller fines[3].
## State-Specific Regulations
1. **New York**: In New York, the law requires that the price charged must not exceed the lowest advertised, written, posted, or marked price. Violations can result in civil penalties, and repeated offenses can lead to more severe consequences[9].
2. **Connecticut**: Connecticut law mandates that if an electronic price is higher than the reduced price marked on a sign, the consumer is entitled to one item of that commodity at no cost. This aims to protect consumers from electronic pricing errors[2].
3. **Ohio**: In Ohio, while there is no explicit prohibition against charging more than the marked price, consumer protection laws require clear disclosure of product pricing. If a business complies with disclosure requirements, it may not necessarily be illegal to charge a higher price, but this is often subject to interpretation and enforcement by state authorities[12].
## Reporting and Enforcement
Consumers who encounter overcharging can report the issue to their state's consumer protection agency or the local weights and measures department. These agencies are responsible for ensuring pricing accuracy and can conduct inspections and impose penalties on businesses that violate pricing laws[6][14].
## Conclusion
While the specifics can vary by state, the general rule is that businesses are not allowed to charge more than the price marked on a product. This practice is considered deceptive and is regulated under various consumer protection laws. Consumers who experience such issues should report them to the appropriate authorities for resolution.

I own a physical media store, and it’s common sense not to do these things to your customers. So, I agree, leave if they do any of these things. Definitely ruins the entire experience
I heard of a district manager that would walk around the store with the main manager, assistant managers and department managers. If he saw an item that didn’t have a price he would grab it and give it to a customer that was nearby and tell them it was free because it had no price on it. He wasn’t messing around.
That district manager sounds awesome, we need more people like that keeping businesses in check.
It was a lesson to the managers to price stuff on the shelves. Very good approach here.
Dude, regarding your first issue of seeing one price on the item and then the cashier tells you it's more, in some states by law, they are required to sell it to you for the cheaper price-assuming you are in a state that has such laws and said state enforces them.
I did not know this.
This place wasn't really a store, it was like an upscale flea market stall, basically.
This is also true in Canada. We have laws against Red Flag #1 mentioned. Thats why i have never come across this issue. Not only they would have to sell it at the sticker price, we are entitled to a $10 discount as well. So if an item was priced at $10 and they try to upsell it at the counter, we could actually receive it for free.
This is a law in almost all states the item in question is always sold at the price marked if lower than the register rings. Another issue was the seller checking e-bay to sell it for a higher price that would be call a mark up a very disreputable business practice. I would not buy his merchandise and report it to the management of the flea market.
Problem is most people don't know that. So in the sellers mind, if you're not bringing that point up, it's a case of "What they don't know won't hurt them."
Never forget, money is the root of all evil.
My biggest pet peeve is when the studios don’t shrink wrap the slipcovers, and then the stores put their price stickers right on them. I decided long ago that I just wasn’t going to buy them if they did that. Best Buy lost a TON of my business by doing that, they eventually stopped but they’d already reduced their selection by then. I never buy a used copy of anything to save money, so if I pay more for a new copy there’s no excuse for putting a sticker right on it like that. I’ve even seen Amoeba do that which is pretty sad.
I went to a store in Reno once that had laserdiscs which weren’t priced. I brought up the ones I wanted and most were reasonable in the $5 range, but the guy wanted $27 for one because “that’s what it last went for on EBay.” I told him I didn’t make the trip there to pay EBay prices, and good luck getting that much from anyone.
It's a shame because now whenever you see laserdiscs out, I can almost guarantee they're gonna be inflated prices. I would love to get a Laserdisc player at some point, but I've only ever seen them for ridiculous prices at stores.
Theres a comic shop that i used to frequent, everytime i walked in the door the owner would begin "casually" following me around. I, in no way, look shady i promise 😂
Just gotta ask you if you’re looking for anything! 😂
Ok I’m going to ask it. Why keep going back?
GameStop and their idea of selling "new" games that aren't factory sealed. Maybe a pre-order for a game would get you sealed, but too many times they'd take something from a disk sleeve and put it in the case after I paid full price.
@@Stinger2578 Yeah, I certainly remember game stop doing alot of that stuff.
Tip with sharpies: scribble over it with a dry erase marker. It removes the sharpie. I used to use that in my classroom everyday.
I have done this before with a white board! Good tip!
i'm a bookworm and stores do that to hardbacks and paperback's it's such a pain in the ass. some also do that to comic books as well for some reason
Putting a sticker on a comic book should be illegal.
@@HunterBoldingVideo agreed
In the UK, it's illegal to try and charge more than the sticker price on an item. Surprised that it's allowed over there.
That’s the worst with the stickers man! I’m a collector and I’m thinking why are you ruining the slipcovers? I’ve even seen them on steelbooks!
That's a deal breaker for me
If you care about the merchandise, you should care about the customer experience too. Not that hard to use a sticker or whatever that doesn't mangle the merchandise.
Use lighter fluid. It works wonders on removing stickers. Look up toy polloi. He uses it to remove toy stickers and residue, those are worse than any gamestop sticker, since he uses it on sometimes 39 plus year old sticker residue.
That 1st example is called bait and switch. Companies are required to sell you the product at the lowest advertised price. If they raise the price at the register that's a misdemeanor. If it can be shown that the employees of a particular location all engaged in this misdemeanor it would then be conspiracy to commit a misdemeanor which is in fact a felony. I would encourage anybody who gets stuck in this particular situation to inform any employee of this, and see how they reply.
This was a smaller “store” at something like an upper scale flea market.
@@HunterBoldingVideo I appreciate where you are coming from, but being a small operation at a flea market does not exempt them from the law.
Gamestop has improved their stickers, haven't had an issue in at least 5-6 years. And even if the case is in terrible shape, they have replacements most of the time in the drawers behind the register. Disc replay is also pretty reputable in my area at least.
I've never had an issue with a GameStop disc not playing. I do most of my GameStop shopping online, so it's a lottery whether you get the original case/insert or not.
When I worked at an independent games shop, we kept all the discs/carts behind the counter (because shoplifting was a bit of an issue) but we always showed the customer the disc or cart before they bought a thing, without hesitation. If we put something on the shelf, and on eBay it was a tenner more or something, it was sold for the shelf price - you can always drop prices (we regularly gave customers deals for multiple purchases) but NEVER put prices up. And we dropped prices based on the condition of the box or media. Price stickers were small and easy to remove too. None of this is difficult, reputational damage is a thing, and customers notice if you try to pull shady crap. Be friendly, don't crap on customers, they're the reason you're in business.
When an Amazon seller doesn’t display the region of the item but it looks like a region 1, until you buy it and then they message you saying it’s a region 2 and you have to cancel it, or they say it’s a region 2 but it’s actually a region 1 and you have to figure that out somehow
I have no clue how the region code isn't just always loudly displayed on the box, I know some have it on the back, but not all.
@@HunterBoldingVideo They usually show it on the back but sometimes there’s no picture available of the back of the item
Most region 2s do show those age rating things on the front that look like stop signs so that’s helpful
Or buying a region 2 disc from a seller when the Amazon picture is region 1
Get a region free player. I’ve never had to worry what region anything is.
I’ve dealt with almost all of these to some extent, but I gotta say I’ve never been told I can’t inspect the disc. In cases where they had a security case they’d always let me look at the register. And if they’re unsealed and not in a security case I just open it and look at it when I pull it off the shelf etc. if I was ever told I couldn’t I’d just drop it and walk out. Concerned about thieves? Buy more security cases.
If you have good merchandise, you'd want customers to know its good and not damaged.
Lol. I hate those damn stickers!
They're the reason why Goo Gone exists! I haven't tried the hair dryer method yet, but still, so annoying.
@@HunterBoldingVideo 🤣 Facts
Game Stop. Never again. That's all that needs to be said.
They are a big part of why physical video games are in dire need of some protection like we give to Blu-rays. They do suck and have sucked for a long time.
I've never had a problem with GameStop.
I'll never buy from Gamestop Online again (for used games), but I'll still go in store where I can determine condition. Their online warehouse will send you some real trash.
Remember when GameStop had their games as "New" and when you went to the register to pay for the game but than you see too many times they'd take something from a disk sleeve and put it in the case after I paid full price..
Yeah I'm sorry.. if I'm going to do business with establishment that has their products say new but isn't factory sealed than that's a red flag for sure. I didn't do business with GameStop for a long time because of that
Seriously. That has always annoyed me.
The last local video store in my area closed this last summer. The guy was having a go out of business sale I figured cool I'd go pick out some new movies. Anything common he was selling for $9.99. previously viewed copies of DVDs for $9.99 movies that I can get at the local pawn shop for a dollar. I started going through his obscure foreign stuff brought a disc up front and like you said he looked it up on eBay and he told me it would be 15 bucks. I begrudgingly bought it and never went back. Judging from the pictures I saw he still had tons and tons of product when he locked his doors. Most of the stuff that he had was common stuff that most of us collectors would have owned but if you would have put a buck or two a piece on those DVDs people would have come in there and bought them for their families to watch to keep up at the cabin whatever but instead he ended up locking his doors with a shit ton of product.
So here in the UK we have a chain by the name of CEX. They sell second hand games, films on various formats, games consoles etc. Extremely greedy, but one of their worst practices is reselling copies of things with reprinted covers. I hardly go in there anymore.
I would just laugh, at least GameStop didn't print out the cover of a game and slap it on.
Man...that's some sleezy shops you're dealing with pal....I wouldn't shop at any of those.
I haven’t shopped at any of these places since, luckily SoCal still has some great stores.
Im relieved to find that my little vendor market shop doesn’t do any of these. I generally don’t go back and reprice and so if a customer gets a deal, AWESOME! I might every now and again check a few but its rarely worth the effort. One thing i do with most of our stock of games and movies is put them in bags. It looks nice and the games are kept cleaner and you get clean surfaces to place stickers without damaging the case.. I certainly don’t mind someone wanting to check a case, but just bring them to the front and do so with oversight. Shrink is real but I’m not a monster.
My son collects TCG cards like pokemon. There are about 5 stores nearby and everyone doesn't bother pricing anymore. They all say "go to tcg player on your phone to get the price"... so annoying
Cool shirt. THE MAIDEN! Stickers are a pain.
Up the irons! If you like Maiden, you should check out the videos I did on them!
using a hair dryer is best way to remove stickers it keeps u from scratching cover simple
5:08: "On EBay, if you're buying a disc, you're gonna get a picture of the disc; if you don't, you don't buy it, because obviously, it might be scratched or whatever."
OT-- that's happened to me with a lot of old-time newspapers I've purchased from there; most of them I have came with everything that was in them as of their publication on those days, but I have been burned a few times. One was an old 1984 Sunday Rocky Mountain News paper from Denver (the Rocky Mountain News was one of the two papers that the Mile High City had, back when that was a two-paper area); the listing showed a bunch of pictures including the front, the back, the Sunday magazine section, and a special part celebrating the 125th anniversary of that Denver tabloid. I tried to get my nephew (who I had purchasing them for me at the time; I purchase them myself now, and I have a huge collection) to ask the seller if indeed everything pictured was there; I got no response. I figured (quite foolishly) that I could trust that everything in the listing and pictures would come in the purchase, so I bit. When the purchase came, it was just the one special section; I was incredibly disappointed, but I learned a lesson (what I wonder is why more was advertised in the listing than what I actually got).
That said, from now on, if I see something I may like, I look it over carefully before biting, and look for listings with more than one picture, because with just one picture (or none at all), you're very likely throwing good money after bad if you bite and it's not what you think it is.
In some stores now, when you open the dvd's they are not here, if you buy it, he put the disc when you paid.
We have a "city wide garage sale" in Austin. I collect cameras, and I sell cameras. I was at a table, seller has mostly cameras out, no prices on anything. Condition is everything. I'm checking stuff out, looking for scratches, fungus, etc. in the lens. Seller gets annoyed and tells me I'm not allowed to look at cameras until AFTER I buy them. I ask how I am supposed to know WHAT I am buying if I don't look at it? He gets very rude and I walk off. A seller at another table actually got upset and complained to the sale's management on my behalf. I've never been back. The fun twist to this story is that years ago I actually bought something from this guy off ebay. It showed up broken. I asked for a return, he freaked out, but had to take it back per ebay's policies. He then blocked me. I didn't realize it was the same guy until months after he freaked out in person at the sale. I participate as a vendor at camera meets/shows. If I don't want people to touch something, I put it in a case. If it's out on the table, it's expected that somebody is going to pick it up and look at it.
Exactly, if it's in a case, I'm sure people would ask to see it if they're legitimately interested in buying it.
Some of your tips can apply to comic book shops. Thanks.
Everyone dumps on California, but in California stores are legally required to honor the price that's on the item or displayed with the item.
As a game collector if i pick something up and they look it up on pricecharting or ebay at the counter I don't buy it and won't go back to that store. I'm not interested in a place that wants to nickle and dime me.
I understand stores not opening items to allow a peek inside especially if it's busy. Its time consuming and the store can't sit there with people in line held up for someone wanting to "take a peek" or choosing "the best looking one out of five". That's why they readily offer a refund if you don't like it once you get home.
I can understand that being a situation where they wouldn't want to do it.
There was a shop near me that would shrink wrap used DVDs. I think Moviestop did that as well. I didn’t have a problem with that but it sucked when I buy a dvd and it turned out to be a library copy that had stickers directly on the front of the disc and in the booklet.
Gamestop I've had horrible experiences with them. That's why I shop at pawn shops and thrift stores just make sure you look to see if the right disc is in the case it's in good condition or to see if it's in there at all
New sub here. I got one. I don’t preorder anymore, because the store who I’ve previously dealt with (whose name rhymes with “LameSlop”) doesn’t guarantee that you will get your free content if you don’t pick up your item on its launch date.
Welcome to the channel! I rarely pre-order games anymore either for this reason, or because they just go on sale so quickly after.
@@HunterBoldingVideo Thank you. And yeah, it does seem that the price of new games tends to drop fairly quickly after launch.
Thanks for info and dully noted
I think I remember seeing a bunch of stickers and stuff as well which wouldn't be quite as bad if your main concern was just to play the video game or whatever however all those stickers are something which seem like they would depreciate the potential collectors value of an item.
How do you know if a DVDs are but lags or not
Very unlikely that I go to stores nowadays. The rare times I buy new movies, it's online. Otherwise, it's thrift shops and swap meets. Store prices are ridiculous.
Similar to the sticker issue, Vintage Stock will use spider wraps that are too tight and are clearly digging into box sets.
This is also a problem, or when they heat the outer plastic and it melts to the blu-ray case.
The main pre-owned movie shop in the UK is called CEX. Disks are behind the counter and staff check each on before putting into the box. If you are buying a box set this can take time, but it’s worth it. Anything you buy has a 2 year warranty.
Sounds like a great shop to me, I'd rather wait and know that I'm getting a good disc.
@@HunterBoldingVideo bought lots of disks from them over the years, even 4K and never had a problem with one, except a dual pack of Yogi Bear for 50p where the BD didn’t work and the DVD did. My son wasn’t too concerned as he was 3 at the time!
@@loftlegacy If that's the only issue, and the son wasn't mad, I'd say let it slide! 😂
One time I bought a Blu-ray called star trek discovery season 1 but the disc was a movie called forbidden planet so I took it back for a change
TIME TRAVEL back to 2 0 0 3 when Star Trek TNG was being released on DVD. FYE had the first release Season 1 then 2 they were about $99 For each Season . I kept track to see when it would be reduced in price. From 2 0 0 3
To 2014 those same Season DVDs were still the same price and the complete Series used I got on Ebay was cheaper than 1. I finally found the corporate Geniuses new nothing about depreciating of electronics including media 🤔🤔🤔🤪 complete asinine operation. The store was well stocked and did have good deals and sales that is why it stayed open
There was a really cool used movie/game store like 10 minutes from my home. It was awesome. I shopped there for years with no issues. Then starting about a year ago, every single movie I bought there had scratches on the discs. And not just a light scratch. Lots of awful looking scratches. I used to sell to them as well and got a decent amount of money. They were usually pretty fair. Then I brought in about 20 movies. Blu-rays and DVDs. Most of them boutique films that should have gotten me at least $10 per film. They offered me $12 total. I was shocked! I told them these movies were worth much more than that and I just started selling stuff on eBay. It seemed like the owner started hiring really people who had no idea what they were doing. I also noticed they are selling films that I paid $20 for new for $30. And yup, always a crappy sticker on the box. Such a shame. I haven't bought anything from them since
That's a real shame, always sucks to see a store that you used to love go downhill like that.
Dude, where I live, by law, the retailer can't charge more than the advertised/stickered price.
I would assume a store owner changing the price of things at the register doesn't really care for laws.
About your 3rd Red Flag (In defense of the stores) back-in-the-day when I use to purchase 'Adult' DVDs at this one place in NYC, I did notice that some of the boxes were EMPTY! It was obvious that brousers were stealing the discs. So, if a shop sells unsealed disc, don't be to angry if they ask you not to open them. It would be better to shop at place (Retail Store) where the merchandise is factory sealed. If you want to buy at a discount shop, just ask them if you can see the disc before you buy. If they say NO then let them know that they will be loosing a sale & future customer if they don't...!
That sounds like a special situation, but yeah, this store wasn't even letting you look at the discs in front of them.
Every comic book store prices at the register now. Ruins the experience. You’re basically doing their inventory for them.
Yeah, unless it's a new issue, what's the point of having employees that should know prices and books.
Sticker on the disc? I dont think its good for the disc or the player , i dont know if it even play
Some stores sell re-sealed used discs so you have to buy it before you know how scratched up it is. 🤔
Five Below does that.
I’ve literally never shopped at a place that altered a price in that way in your first example. Where do you all shop???
I have never seen this either and if I did I'd walk out and never come back and let them know that's why.
This wasn't a super reputable store, it was basically a booth at a flea market, but more upscale.
At my work customers get annoyed when I tell them "Please check the disc before purchase!". Because they are totally clueless that they buy second hand discs and that the discs might be scratchy/missing.
Embarrassing on their part, should always check the merchandise when you're buying anything!
@@HunterBoldingVideo Yep. But luckily they are far away from being the worst customers.
that's nothing i was at a game stop a couple years back and now this isn't game stop but the customers ! i was shopping there and not long after we got there one came in and was wanting to return a new game. the clear was really nice to them and said we can't take it new but if you want to open it in your car and come back in... they never did what the fuck?
I know these were about red flags (and not letting a customer check a used item is ridiculous) ... But, the only one on the list that would piss me off, is if you have one price on the item, and I go up front, and it is a different price... I wouldn't even hand the item to the guy... I would drop it on the floor and leave...
I almost did that when it happened, I just kind of stared at them, and didn't buy the item.
If I dont see a price I treat it like a restaurant that does the same thing. I can't afford it then I leave.
At the end of your video there is no thumbnail when you where pointing up towards your left.
I've had an issue with Amazon. I purchased (what I thought was) and listed as a "new" copy of Willy Wonka on 4K. When it finally arrived. It didn't come with a slipcover, and when I removed the plastic. I could see small pieces of plastic on the case from when it was previously opened.
Damn, sounds like Amazon should have given out a refund.
This just happened to me with Enter The Dragon on 4k. Resealed disc.
Check your state laws on price changing. In most, this is illegal and needs to be reported. Car dealerships get in trouble all the time for this “practice”
This was from an upscale “flea market” stall, not exactly a store.
You can get sharpie off of a case fairly easily either with rubbing alcohol or writing over it with dry erase marker. Cases are cheap. Unless it's some sort of crazy custom case I don't necessarily care about that.
It's against the law to put a price on something then raise the price at the register the store had to honor/ hat price.
I would bet that a store owner doing that wouldn't care about the law much.
I avoid the dump bins at Wal-Mart. I'm not going to dig through that mess. A lot of the media will have crimps in the paper inlays. If i owned a Wal-Mart store i would assemble a cheap shelving unit or more to store the media properly.
It's actually illegal to require a different price than is marked. Stickers are annoying but there are some stores that use ones that are easy to remove. :)
This was more of a flea market booth, but an upscale one, so it wasn't necessarily a licensed store.
I can sort of handle stickers on a blu ray cover as I have plenty of spare covers but stickers on the cover hell no!
Just put stickers that are easy to get off, it shouldn't be this hard!
I bought a sealed vintage copy of Young Frankenstein on DVD a couple years ago, and it had one of those square white barcode stickers on the back of the cover. I tried to get it off, but it ruined the cover. Why the hell would you put a sticker on a DVD cover?
#2 Pricing. Half Price Books where I live I haven't gone back to in months. They like to charge Amazon retail on all these used titles. I have even seen a boxset where they say a disc is missing and still priced at Amazon new. CRAZY. I only go back because they are 3 blocks from my house and I once got a SACD for regular CD price and some Vinegar Syndrome titles at a reasonable price. I though I would give them a chance to purchase some of my blu-rays I had upgraded to 4K, duplicates from another package deal and even 4Ks that I got because I later got them as part of a boxset. Their offer averaged out to $0.25 a disc. More often than not I leave angry at them being so crap.
I thought I remembered HPB being at least decent, sounds like somewhere along the line they got messed up with pricing.
I live in Southern California and I worked in big retail store we had a government agency come in and look if our prices were right and on the product
I order most every movie online, i walked into the local Walmart and the shelves were just 20 percent full, i Know there is a big shoplifting problem there.
I dont know why they dont lockup the blu rays like everything else.
If it's a problem, they definitely should put them in the display cases like games.
And also no price tags on stuff seems like the store owner are trying to make you feel pressured into agreeing to pay an amount of money for something that you wouldn't otherwise be willing agree to pay for that stuff.
One of the (many) reasons I stopped buying from Movie Trading Company a few years ago was that all of their used movies were shrink wrapped (and overpriced...but that's a different issue). How am I supposed to know what I'm really paying for? What's the condition of the disc? Are all the discs included? Does it have any of the original paperwork? The store employees can't even really help you if they wanted to because...well, it's sealed. They have no idea what's inside. It seemed like whoever made that decision at the corporate level had no understanding of what is valuable to a customer in the used product market. Are they even still in business? I have no idea.
Drives me nuts when i ask for a price and then they check ebay. Has been happening more and more. If i wanted to pay ebay price i could just go buy it on ebay.
Takes way too long, doesn't actually train your employees on pricing, doesn't make for a good customer experience.
@@HunterBoldingVideo Also takes away from the fun and need to pick it up right then. If it's marked $15 and I know it's $20 on Ebay, I'm more likely to grab it. The second they look it up my mind goes, "well I guess I could always get it on Ebay later." Especially if I'm travelling and don't have to worry about getting it home now.
Thank you. Dont miss that nonsense at all. All of this is unacceptable. Dont settle for less!
Definitely, we deserve better as customers!
No store should be changing prices at the cash register. You should report that to the Better Business Bureau.
It was a while ago before I was more confident in myself, now I would 100% let the business owner know how scummy that is.
I will say if its factory sealed I don't ask, even if it's "used". As far as the stickers, I have Tom's of gamstop games. There are no stickers or smresidue on them. If the sticker is on the case, lighter fluid will remove the sticker and all residue. Then let it dry and clean with windex or iso.
I’ve never experienced this in my life thankfully
Never experienced the first thing thankfully. Probably because it's illegal. If a business does that to you, report them to the BBB.
What’s the name of the pop in the background with white hair and green skin?
Looks like an Iron Maiden "Eddie" (band mascot)
It’s the special edition glow in the dark Iron Maiden Killers Eddie.
@@HunterBoldingVideo looks cool
I also collect comics and there are retailers that pul the EXACT SAME sh!t! I don'tgo back, ESPECIALLY if they wait to tell me after I've spent time digging! 🤦🏽♂️
Yeah, a lot of these can go for other hobbies, comics, toys, TCGs, etc.
They should AT LEAST be willing to check the disc quality with you at the counter.
This place didn't even want to do that, it was nuts.
@@HunterBoldingVideo - that's very shady
Gamestop is a number one offender! Trying to sell you used media and games saying they are new or a used product is more then a new one lol . Not to mention stickers are all over and you can't get off that residue.
I've had that garbage that they used to pull with "new" games being the ones that the employees used as a rental copy basically.
The worst I've run into is selling used discs selling for new prices. No Thanks.
Yeah, no markdown for used items, no money from me.
GameStop was on this BS with the original Wii release of Xenoblade Chronicles (and probably some others).
Since the game initially was localized for the US with a very limited print run, GameStop somehow became the EXCLUSIVE RETAILER to carry it.
After a while, they “converted” all their leftover stock of it from new to “used” so they could charge MORE than the MSRP (marking it up to $80 or $90 for a “used” copy for something that originally cost $50-$60).
It’s the law in the UK, if there is a price on the item, that’s what you pay….no matter what the shopkeeper says. Yeah stickers are a bugbear of mine 😬 nice one mate, take care👍😃👍
Thanks for the kind words! This was from an upscale “flea market” stall, so it wasn’t exactly a store.
@@HunterBoldingVideo ahh fair enough, still scummy behaviour from the seller.
Store owners forcing me to Jack Merch! I can’t believe it!😈
Here's the problem: More people than not ARE still buying them despite all that sketchy stuff. Enough people ARE trying to steal the disks when they open them. It's enough people ruining it for the rest of us.
No joke, this extends way beyond something like physical media stores. There are so many food places (Pizza, Chinese food, Indian food, etc.) where I live that refuse to either A. Deliver. or B. Accept anything other than cash because enough people figured out a way to fake payments online or outright steal food from delivery drivers that it's no longer an option for those of us who aren't complete douchebags.
2nd hand Charles has 1 sticker that comes off easily try getting a 5$ library book for 100$ talk about stickers
There is a CD/vinyl shop with especially metal. Sounds great if you're a metal fan because they have a lot of great stuff. But when you walk in the shop, someone is constantly following you around. He tries to mask it by casual talking but that makes it double awkward since I'm not that much of a talker 😂
Never encountered any of these red flags but I initially built up a sizeable blu-ray collection from buying from a national Pawn shop chain. I found the 1960's Batman TV series blu-rays at one of these stores, they were in their 3 separate blu-ray cases without the box but I bought them anyway, stupidly without checking all the discs. Popped the first season 1 disc in and it glitched and skipped and froze constantly, took it out and it was scratched. So I took it back the next day - they have a 90-day return policy and got my money back...no problem.
Went back a few days later and they'd put it back out on the shelf for sale, with the same scratched seas 1 disc...
Ooof, putting out the damaged merchandise is pretty scummy of them.
@@HunterBoldingVideo Yup. They don't care - My buddy buys 2nd hand games from them and they're frequently badly scratched and in some cases there's the wrong disc or no disc at all, meaning they don't even check them when they buy them
No offense, guys, but are you really surprised that a chain of pawn shops doesn't care about quality or customer service? It's pretty much stated on the store-front.
@@williamdixon-gk2sk Surprised? Not really. But it made for a somewhat interesting anecdote...
@jamied1579 Certainly, I was 2nd hand pissed just reading it. But "chain-pawn-shop" just screams shitty.
Pawn shops are notorious for shitty service and overcharging for scratched disks.
In Australia, I am glad that any attempt to change the price like that is illegal under the Trade Practices Act. We would be entitled to complain to the Australian Consumer and Competition Commission who would then fine the living daylights out of them.
So I take it basically that Down Under, if a certain price is advertised on something, and then the checkout person tries to tell you otherwise at checkout, that's against the law.
@@bmasters1981 Yes, and there are also requirements if the price at sale differs from the price shown on any price labels at the shelf where the item is shown.
I had a situation on Wednesday. I bought some frozen pies from a supermarket -- two boxes each with two pies.
The price label in the fridge where you picked them out said they were on special for $4.50 per box with a $9.00 regualr price (50% off), the checkout said $9.00 each. I brought this up with the staff, they checked and I was entitled to get the first box for free with the second box at the $9.00 price (although I had a choice if I wanted to pay that).
I accepted this as the total amount was the same that I thought I'd be paying when I picked the pies out.
Very good tips! I went to a used book store once that had a comic book area. First thing I noticed was they were not sorted. Since it was near where I lived I told the owner that I had worked in comic book stores before and could sort them relatively quickly if he wanted and was willing to pay for my time. I said he would think about it. Then when I noticed there were no prices on the books at all he asked which one I was interested in and he'd look it up. I raised my eyebrow at him, he clearly remembered me telling him that I has worked in comic book stores in the past and he literally said out loud "Oh wait... You know what you're talking about don't you?" Never went back there.
Changing the price at the register when it’s mark is illegal
I wonder what they would say in you tried paying for a movie with a store printed cover with a home printed $10 bill :_
I don't know if this counts but the service like I'm more inclined to buy if im like at a bar talking to the worker about which Zelda games are the best not the worker that like I don't have time for you like piss off no i understand u have customers but it's the environment and engagement and I'm going to be more willing to go back to the one store that talked why back to the future is the best movie than guy i ask who looks pissed off you are there and attempting to talk to them. If that makes sense
Sounds like you're describing Gamestop...I went there once. Never went back.
I lave if there’s no price tag 0:55 technically a store once it has priced something must sell it at the price marked according to u.S. consumer law. Thats what i tell them when it’s priced. If they pull out the phone i almost always tell them no
I always hated the blockbuster video full disc sticker! What madness made that a choice someone chose!?
What are you going to do while looking inside while your in front of a clerk...steal it in front of them? Yea right!
Physical media collecting is the worst in Canada. Way too expensive.
lol just the disk for full price smh
#2 The only time I'm paying for just the disk and a generic looking case is for System of a Down's Steal This Album.
It is false advertising, report them to the State. (First red flag)
