Takes me right back to my early foolish teens. Great times great music .... buying single records on a Saturday afternoon from WH Smiths ;-) then listening to the UK TOP 40 on a Sunday afternoon. Happy days ... and now alas RIP Terry .... passing of an Era ...
A powerful song which has stood the test of time and continues to be as relevant today as ever, a song which makes you feel forever youthful and delivers an important message, a song which everyone knows through one way or another. Thank you Terry, RIP 🙏
RIP Terry Hall. I was a Motorhead fan back then (still am) but The Specials were important, their music had a message, just as relevant today as it was then. A real loss. His music and his message will live on.
@@rjjcms1 😢😢😢nooo........same here. Can’t seem to shake off the sadness. He was clearly carrying around the burden of the evil that took place in his life that he didn’t invite. I sometimes wonder if that stress makes a person sick because the pain is just too much to bear. May he rest in eternal peace and power🙏❣️❣️
@@debsn7772 I didn't know about that until the news reports this week. It's sad,and all this time I'd thought it was just the Coventry (concrete jungle) effect that was behind his appearing moody.
I still have their first album as an original on vinyl. At the time, as a poor, working class school boy, I thought their music was just relevant to me. Now with the advent of RUclips I can see it affected many people. The Specials were "Special". They were/are the only group that talk about every day problems affecting people, especially the youth: loneliness, apathy, meaning of life, boredom, the rat race, racism, urban decline, etc. What no one mentions is the genius of Jerry Dammers. I was gutted when they broke up. I was initially very excited when they reformed but then realised that maybe they were trying to recreate the past but then 40+ years later, it was too late. In addition without Dammers, it didn't feel right. The group abruptly disbanded after he spent a year composing Ghost Town, their biggest track to date. I greatly respected the fact that he did not join out of principle. He could have done so, earned good money, etc but he did not forget what happened and out of principle as he probably felt he was wronged he did not rejoin. Lynval Golding actually states that it was only after he and the other two left that they realised how much of a genius Jerry Dammers was! He was/is the genius behind The Specials. He was the creative influence behind the music, the composition, the lyrics and song writing. He is an out and out legend! RIP Terry Hall.
I f you ever go to a ska show.. which i don't think will happen again. You'll Have A lot Of Fun Dancing And Bopping ... yes I'm 58 and loved this period
Back in the late 70's / early 80's, UK radio would regularly play this live version. When I later found out there was also a studio version, I had to hear it and felt a little disappointed if I'm honest as my memory of this song is 100% this version down to every bass walk, snare pop, organ chop and audience cheer. Still bloody brilliant 40+ years later.
A spokesman for the generation of that time and a serious part of my Senior School days especially the discos.. Now reunited with fellow Special John Cunningham who left us far too soon as well.✝✝✝✝✝👼👼👼
If you are too young to never have been to a Specials concert (especially back in the early 80's) then you missed out on the best live band ever and being part of the audience at a Specials concert is something you never forget... :-) To really get a feel for just how great these concerts and the atmosphere at them was, try and get a hold of the movie "Dance Craze", it's 90 mins of live concert footage of all the great Ska bands of the era and is simply magic... :-)
My dad's first gig was The Specials at the Lyceum and it was the same one that eventually became part of the no.1 EP in 1980. RIP Terry Hall, Coventry's favourite son.
😢R.I.P Mr Hall Thank you for being such a big part of my teenage years and beyond them. The pioneers of the 2 TONE movement 🏁 Truly special you left us Much too young 🍻
Punk/Ska music always reminds me of my parents. I been an orphan since i was 8 but damn my parents both had good taste music. It is brilliantly written. It depicts a psycho who hates a woman who has chosen a better man. One who is married and who is a father.
