Lyrics:
You're working at your leisure to learn the things you'll need
The promises you make tomorrow will carry no guarantee
I've seen your qualifications, you've got a Ph.D.
I've got one art O level, it did nothing for me
Working for the rat race
You know you're wasting your time
Working for the rat race
You're no friend of mine
You plan your conversation to impress the college bar
Just talking about your Mother and Daddy's Jaguar
Wear your political T-shirt and sacred college scarf
Discussing the worlds situation but just for a laugh
You'll be working for the rat race
You know you're wasting your time
Working for the rat race
You're no friend of mine
Working for the rat race
You know you're wasting your time
Working for the rat race
You're no friend of mine
Just working at your leisure to learn the things you don't need
The promises you make tomorrow will carry no guarantee
I've seen your qualifications, you've got a Ph.D.
I've got one art O level, it did nothing for me
Working for the rat race
You know you're wasting your time
You're working for the rat race Видеоклипы
“Daddy’s Jaguar and sacred college scarf’. Genius lyrics sung by a legend. Boy does he look so cool in this video. RIP you kind and gentle man.
And sadly f*ck all has changed xD
the stuff to day will never be ass good as what we had
Yes man he looks absolutely smooth mate 💯that’s a killer suit 💯
R I.P Terry Hall, gone but will never be forgotten. This song sent me on my life's path. The lyrics spoke to me at the age of 12, and I stayed well away from the Rat Race and prospered.
we must be close to the same age....this video rocked my world. Totally unlike anything out there at the time and Terry like the total anti rock star hero.
born in 1988 and it saved me too I guess
@@hiredgunscotty I am more Terry's age so this is the music of my early twenties rather than teen years.
You guys are all so young! I’m glad a new generation will get to know them ! It’s timeless!!
@nevada k I first witnessed The Specials and the unmistakable voice of disaffected youth, (2 months shy of 12 years old)in 1979 on the 2Tone tour. With Madness and The Selecter on the bill, that gig opened my eyes and mind. Ska'd for life, as they say. I still get goosebumps thinking about that magical night.
Caught the mood of our country in the eighties!! Terry Hall legend I owe you a massive debt of gratitude!!
I was born in Feb '63 - these bands made our youth magical & unforgettable!! Thank you! So many favourite Brit bands of the late '70s & early -80s to mention, They gave us a diamond youth we treasure to date!! ❤🔥❤🔥❤🔥
Best music eva😅
I was born 1964😮
Absolutely spot on .
This time of our lives we just lived for fun 🎶👍
I was born 61
Great memories of those carefree days
So sad they are gone
I was born in ‘69 and this is me ….
so talented and fun, I will always love the Specials, best concert ever !
RIP Terry Hall, you are an absolute legend and one of my all time heroes .Love to you and your family..
I'm 72 and these guys have been one of my 2 or 3 fav bands since I brought the album home & heard the first few notes of "A Message To You, Rudy." Friends my age kinda said, "Huh?" I liked how they made anger & alienation & sadness fun & danceable. Too many people hate & stereotype Baby Boomers. It wasn't our fault when we were born. Millions of us have known it's all a bullshit racket all our lives & we've plowed through it & "done our time" with help from bands in each decade in the spirit of The Specials!
Im with ya bud 👊
The people that hate on baby boomers are self loathing garbage looking to blame anyone for their shortcomings aka the weakest and most fragile generation
Amen
dont worry we never blame the whole generation, solidarity
Specials were special and us boomers had the best of it .
60 years old and I remember this like it was yesterday, I was in college, loved this album. What a unique sound and sadly short-lived band. I think the Specials were not been given the credit they really deserved. Granted in 1980 there were so many post-punk and "new wave" bands, it's often hard to rank them, but the Specials will rise up as future critics look at this time period. See you all in the FUTURE!
there still going now same guys.✌🍻
stranglers i havea soft spot as well that deep bass sound is so infectious.as the 2 tone the beat and the selector🤼♀️🤼♀️🤼♀️👍
@@andrewellis3326 3 of the same guys only!
They were absolutely brilliant
The specials where the band that helped bring down Apartheid by making every kid on the planet into an implacable foe of Apartheid and racist govts. I'd say they've definately earned their place in the pantheon of rock and roll heroes.
RIP Terry Hall. This track always touched me emotionally for reasons I could never properly comprehend. Now it simply emotes as a memory from a lost youth.
My fave Specials song. RIP Terry Hall..thanks for making my childhood even more enjoyable
Man the Specials were the soundtrack to my youth. RIP Terry Hall!!
I loved this song.Terry was indeed........ SPECIAL. I am shocked to hear of his passing.
The Specials and Madness were my favorite Ska bands of the early 80s. Their songs were always upbeat and made want to dance.
The Specials, Madness and The Beat. Don't forget The Beat!
Same here! Can’t understand the comment above, the black guy still being angry.
The first time I heard Specials, I was 15 and on top of the world. Thank you for the memories Terry.
Such a great song and band. What a privilege it was to grow up in the 80s with so many great bands that still sound great today
Sad, sad night. RIP Terry, true legend. Thanks for the memories ❤💔
Brilliant I'm 57 and still stomp on to two tone great music and era we may have been poor but we had great music 😊
R.I.P. John Bradbury. Over 4 years gone, but never forgotten. Thanks for the music Mr. Funky drummer.
Hes very underrated
Thanks mate
As a drummer he of my favourites
💕💕💕
Absolutely!
Mrs H .. This is one of my earliest records I bought ..75p..on a 45.....If I remember correctly... You can NEVER replace Classic songs.. I love you Terry..Goodnight & God Bless
I was lucky enough to go see the two tone tour back in 1980. The Selector, Madness and the Specials all in one gig. And to top it all, only a couple of hundred people at the gig. Those were the days.
Very big thank you to Terry Hall and The Specials for all the brilliant music.
Makes me feel 12 years old again, fantastic. RIP Terry.
Terry Hall was a legend, their music was so much a product of its time and still so relevant, they don't make them like this anymore. Rest in power Terry Hall, your love and your enthusiasm and your sheer genius is timeless and will live forever. 💙
💯 i must admit as 13 year old i absolutely loved this tune, but i was so into the jam at the time circ 1980 i didnt fully appreciate the influence the specials had on society at the time. R i p terry hall. Gone far too soon.❤
Remember listening to the specials whilst locked up in norwich prison in the late 70,s and skanking in the cell.Hard to get a radio in those days.Been a good boy since but have fond memorys of the specials.
I did my Time and moved on too Brother! We're good men for it!
I think they dedicated their first tune to you: "message to you Rudy!"
😂😂👍
RIP Terry, what a legend! Will be missed.
R.I.P. Terry. Che la terra ti sia lieve. Saluti da un MOD italiano.
R.I.P. Terry da un Rocker... Rockers rule!
Loved these guys I was just leaving school and looking for work YTs .My first boyfriend bought me the vinyl he's sadly long passed away, but I listen to this and think about all our loved ones who are no longer with us..RIP Terry Hall 🙏💯❤️
they were good times full of good people and music sadly time claims both but the music and their memories live on,
When I was a young man, I was in a band in the U.S. that opened up for these wonderful guys!

Nice one mate
Ska lives forever .... no matter race / religion RIP TERRY 🥰 😭😭
Lived in the UK back then, though born in Australia. Still remember discovering Ska with a mate when we went to see the epic Ska movie Dance Craze. Highlight bands The Specials and The (English). I can still remember the tough 80s UK where Ska was attempting to unite a fractured, battered, weary nation. They succeeded, and produced so many strong hopeful anthems, and melodies. As for Terry Hall, his stage performances were stellar. He will be sadly missed. Gone way to soon, but finally at peace.
Well said
I can still remember buying this it sounds as good as it did then
As relevant today as it was back then...when there are plenty who would seek to divide our society on precisely those grounds...better together!
💯agree with you
The lyrics of the specials rang true when I was 14. They speak volumes today and I'm now 51!nothing has changed...only for the worse.
Grover Bennington I know exactly what you mean am same age grew up under thatcher was a complete disenfranchised youth and 2 tone gave me hope
The music was excellent the politics were shift.
53 and I can only agree
Well said
At least the music,tv and movies were much, much better than today.
Im 54 now loved these back when i was a teen still relevant today rip j b
One of my fave Specials tunes. RIP Terry.
I am a high school student in my last year. At first, I couldnt litsen to the lyrics because of how scarily true they were to my situation. "Your working at your leisure, to learn the things you don't need. The promises you make tommorow, will carry no garuntee"
Working for the rat race. Your know your wasting your time"
More people need to hear this because this message is so damn powerful.
Why are old old vids by the Specials suddenly showing up in my feed? Sometimes the internet does do good deeds. Both songs were ones I didn’t know. Great stuff!
Same 😂
to be fair this is extremely relevant atm
Non-album single in the UK. Got to no.5 on the UK singles chart nearly 45 years ago.
Don't know about anyone else, these songs from this era just make me so happy but also quite emotional now (doesn't stop me listening- thank god for RUclips!) Age has crept up & the lyrics now make sense. Brilliant!
100% Wish I grew up in those days. Proper music! Lyrics hit different too
Same here Deano
Even just the sound of this band floods me with nostalgia for my youth. It's almost palpable.
Happy times
Good night,Terry, your marvelous efforts were not in vain.Especially for a boy in new jersey who first heard you in the radio 40 years ago.
Introduced in 82. I was never the same. The sound is etched in my soul. When I hear their music ….everything falls away and I am right back there and I feel that vibe. Perfection.
56 and I remember this clearly when it was first released. I was tapping my feet to this as it played, and singing along. Thank you!
1980
Im 13 and im so gald my parents introduced me to bands like the specials, madness manowar!Brilliant. My kids will grow up to live these
If your parents listen to Manowar and Madness, they're good people.
These guys killed it with every single song and every single cover they did. They were so amazing. They were way before my time but they're like my Beatles, man.
One of my favorite songs from the Specials. Reminds me of great moments and fears of my youth. Saw them live in Hamburg, big fun.
Nice
the musicians who played the soundtrack of my life are fading away, but i am thankfull as i am glad to have been on this rock at the same time as they were.
am 47 years old man r.i.p terry hall legend grow up on this music ska and still do thanks for your music( the specials )ska never gone lives on
R.I.P Terry wish I could go back to 1979 I was 17 listening to Madness, The Specials, The Selecter, The Beat,Bad Manners and The Bodysnatchers loved it
How TRUE is this track from all those years ago?
This era of feeling is resurfacing again and it will kick ar5e so much harder this time around!
Thank you for all you did, Mr. H 💐
The promises you make tomorrow will carry no guarantee: This best line in the song and so true.
Brilliant band, brilliant song, brilliant album, brilliant era.
Happy Days, when the UK was a great place to live, Happy Days
this song hasn't aged at all - still sounds fantastic
You did alright Terry. Carry on now. We will see you again. And thank you for the love! 🌹👊✌❤🤝
In the 80's we had names for certain types of music...
We called this Genre, Two Tone.. English beat, Madness, The Selector..
We hungered for U.K. Ska /Two Tone music.. We were satisfied..
THE SPECIALS WILL FOREVER BE WITH ME!!!... LOVE THEM SO MUCH!! .R.I.P. TO: ALL OF THE SPECIALS MEMBERS THAT HAVE SADLY PASSED-AWAY!!! MAY THEY BE AT PEACE!!! AND!! REST!! GOD-BLESS!!!...
Wow 12 days ago
And now Terry 😪 RIP
Terry in those glasses, think my heart just burst out of my chest
RIP Terry you were the voice of a generation, thank you
Schooldays in the late 70's/early 80's were the days of the specials and madness
so i have to say i was very lucky, i grew up with this music. I was not a MOD or into scooters at that time, but this music has stayed with me for years. I have been lucky enough to have a son who has become an excellent musician / song writer etc and will be envious of anyone who can play, write etc...
Don’t think any other group captured the mood in this country at the time better, looking at this takes me straight back to middle school.
56 years old. Trilby hat, tight trousers up my ankles, white socks, Harrington jacket and loafers. Long live those memories! Rip Terry Hall
Me too. 56 this year, used to go to school in loafers and Harrington jacket. Terry was my idol. The Specials were my connection to a world that I felt disconnected to. I now live in Ireland, off -grid with 10 acres of land. Pleased to not be part of the Rat Race. RIP Terry.
My god....how evocative is this music !!!!....i absolutely love the specials.....i can NOT believe so many years have gone by in my life 😪
This makes a 64 year old so nostalgic for such a fantastic time for music but we didn't realize at the time how great it was
Loved these as a kid. Still do. The music was much better back then, punk and ska ! Great memories, 52 now !
What a brilliant song! I left school 40 years ago today - and this was the last single I bought before I left.
Cool 👏❤🌹
One of the best ska bands ever! “SPECIAL”
Rest In peace terry, your an absolute legend! This song is pure childhood for me! Brings me to tears every time! Much love brother x
This is just brilliant. A timeless classic. One of their best singles.
Imagine as a 16 year old, Terry Hall invigilating your exam. This generation would achieve the highest results ever. What an inspiration...
RIP Terry. Thanks for the music of my youth. Another fabulous talent gone.😞Xx
1980. THE best times. RIP Terry ❤
RIP John - a special drummer in a special band.
Proud to say I was there ....At the 2 Tone Tour gig in Sheffield 1979 . Best gig I have ever been to . It was a Sunday and the law in those days dictated that every thing closed at 10.30 but the band played on and the audience refused to move when the infamous Sheffield constabulary raided the place , unplugged the band , literally and then proceeded to knock 7 bells out of everyone within their reach , they were quite ferocious , a moment in time I will never ever forget. The police lost my respect on that evening and have never regained it . The Specials meanwhile reflected an era which was quite something in UK social history .....!!!!!!
The piano in this is so well done. I feel this song is perfection. I've met people just like Terry over the decades and they were fine regarding not wanting to be in the rat race.
I absolutely love this track .
Seeing a very young Brad and Terry here it doesn't ring true that they are no longer with us .I'm 63 now and they both died at 62 and 63 respectively
This so reminds me of being in my early 20's and going up to Yarmouth for the weekend and hitting the clubs &pubs and hearing this . Happy days which I miss 🎶🎵
I'm 50 years old , I saw these and all he two tone bands many times , it was what it was then , stop annalizing and enjoy the good times we all had , xxx
Analyzing. I just stopped & am now enjoying....
Annalizing is much better word .lol
It is the likes of the specials that are missing from this present world. Them and other bands helped to bring changes. Terry is greatly missed.
Terry hall’s music was part of my teenage years…RIP Terry 😢😢
A very 'special' band. Love them. The 2Tone movement was a cultural triumph in the UK.
A superb era in music, which came along at the exact time that I was just getting into music! I still have this track on a 7 inch single!
I am from a different subculture the Specials the No 1 Ska band for me R.I.P Terry Hall respect from a Teddy Boy 🎙️📻🎹🎷🤝🙏
I'm 58 from Hammersmith and Chelsea FC and was a skinhead (1979/1982)..see the Specials many times R.IP..top fella.X
"I got one university degree, it did nothing for me" - 2016
When I was a young man, I was in a band in the U.S. that opened up for these wonderful guys!
fantastic band x saw them in 79 or 80 .. guildford . stayed on their tour bus for a good hr talking to them . ahhh thems the days x❤
i know loads of people who say roddy radiation is not that good and overrated but in songs like this, he shows how good he is. amazing band, COVENTRYS FINEST!!
What a brief magical moment in pop music history when punk and reggae made a great collaborative effort and produced a mini movement.
It was Ska combined with punk to create 2 tone.
Bands such as Madness, Selector and The Specials were emerging and thriving.
AGREED
@@oludotunjohnshowemimo434 Pedantic much...
The Clash-SLF -Slits- PIL-Ruts were taking from Reggae...there is a definite connection
Amazing time. I was at school and loved all of their songs. Bringing black and white musicians together while slagging off materialism and the Tories against the backdrop of Thatcher and the race riots. Brilliant
One of my favourite songs by the Specials, just love it, serious good days back then, ska'd for life.
Remember me and my mates dancing to ska at the local discos back in the day, thank you The Specials and RIP Terry X
Another Gem of a tune. RIP Terry. You have served well.
MR. HALL, YOU LEFT US TOO SOON...DAMN IT ! R.I.P. TERRY.
RIP John Bradbury
Still relevant today.
Brilliant drummer, RIP JB
A genius band that brought Ska to many people who would have otherwise overlooked this upbeat tone yet downbeat reflection on society expectations.
RIP Terry Hall and John Bradbury.
Shout out to the other band members throughout the years.
I love how the keyboardist is playing both the keys and the wires inside the instrument. So clever!
R.I.P Terry. The Specials defined my youth. Gone but not forgotten. You can now rest, mate.
I still have their first album as an original on vinyl. At the time, as a poor, working class school boy, I thought this track was just relevant to me. Now with the advent of RUclips I can see it affected many people. The Specials were "Special". They were/are the only group that talk about every day problems affecting people, especially the youth: loneliness, apathy, meaning of life, boredom, the rat race, racism, urban decline, etc. What no one mentions is the genius of Jerry Dammers. I was gutted when they broke up. I was initially very excited when they reformed but then realised that maybe they were trying to recreate the past but then 40+ years later, it was too late. In addition without Dammers, it didn't feel right. The group abruptly disbanded after he spent a year composing Ghost Town, their biggest track to date. I greatly respected the fact that he did not join out of principle. He could have done so, earned good money, etc but he did not forget what happened and out of principle as he probably felt he was wronged he did not rejoin. Lynval Golding actually states that it was only after he and the other two left that they realised how much of a genius Jerry Dammers was! He was/is the genius behind The Specials. He was the creative influence behind the music, the composition, the lyrics and song writing. He is an out and out legend! RIP Terry Hall.
Jerry Dammers, a genius. So Agree and so much so that I love to see it in writing. The editor of British GQ called him the Lennon and McCartney of Ska. Another way to say it, I think.
@@8watertiger Glad to hear you think the same about Jerry Dammers. Since writing the comment I have learned that Jerry Dammers actually wanted to rejoin but was apparently totally blanked and ignored by the band members that he originally recruited!. The band members did not/would not invite him to recording sessions etc and totally blanked his calls to rejoin the band! This was the band that he created. They were living off him basically as I doubt he would have received any money from the numerous concerts they had. How sad, petty and vindictive is that? Apparently they did not like his attempts at perfection and other things but he was/is The Specials! Without him they would not have been the creative force and had the success they did. To then not invite him and ignore his messages to be part of the reunion is downright disrespectful. I lost a lot of respect for the band when I heard this. That aura about The Specials will never quite be the same bearing this in mind.
@@westsidecrew5578 I tend to see it your way, too. Especially because without him they wouldn't have had the band they did and no other member can claim that. Though Terry Hall seemed a perfect fit. Horace Panter may have the most neutral view, in an interview he relayed how Jerry aggressively demanded an apology at the first reunion meeting. Well, I would have given it! But obviously I've never worked with him. As a true musical genius, he probably wanted to direct everything as he heard it in his head, and the others had their own opinions or wanted a fair share of input. Another thing Panter revealed was that Jerry told him what bass lines to play so that gives some insight. I am just hoping 'In the Studio' somehow gets into current rotation because I think it's too good to be enjoyed by only one generation.
@@8watertiger Thanks for the insights. I wasn't aware of the things you mentioned. Jerry Dammers does deserve an apology though as after 30+ years they decide to reform, most probably for financial reasons and he was probably still upset that they split up all those years ago. He was the genius behind the song writing, compositions, etc. He even recruited the band members. He then gets excluded again from the reunion! I never knew the real reasons why the band split up in the first place but read later it was due to personality issues. It's a shame as they could have gone on to be one of the best, if not the best ever bands.
Watched this video a million times. Thanks Terry. RIP
One of the early MTV classics---(Terry Hall was a great front man--very underrated!!)
RIP John - a special drummer in a special band.
the specials, the beat, the selector, madness (early stuff) such a great period in the british music industry used to have me bouncing around my bedroom as a young kid
From a time you knew what music someone loved just by the way they dressed walking down the street!
Kinda. I loved a real mix - Duran Duran, The Specials, Madness, The Jam, Soft Cell. You'd never have worked out my taste from my pencil skirt, blouse and stilettos :D
@@miaschu8175 i love the jam and soft cell too😎
You're right Bill. I remember it just like that. I was into Rockabilly music, although I appreciated other sounds like this one. You had to watch carefully where you went!
Is me today, Bill. 52yr old guy just going the shops, in MA1 green pilot jacket, Treasure Isle t-shirt, turned up Levi 501's and black Doc shoes..Style never goes out of fashion..KTF
@@leeroberts8114 the specials from a time when you had youth culture . Mods, rockers , rockabilly, Ted's, punk, new wave, new romantics, rasta, soul boys, psycho Billy's, ska boys, skins, goths, glam rockers , etc etc where has youth culture gone ?
Rest in peace, Terry. Thanks for all the music.
Love the tweaking of the piano strings at the top of this track.. classic..

Terry Hall ....an icon of an era....one cool dude with a unique voice and image.
Thanks for the memories.
