Lyrics:
Bernie Rhodes knows Don't Argue
Why must you record my phone calls?
Are you planning a bootleg LP?
Said you've been threatened by gangsters
Now it's you, that's threatening me
Can't fight corruption with con tricks
They use the law to commit crime
And I dread, dread to think what the future will bring
When we're living in gangster time
Don't call me scar face
Can't interrupt while I'm talking
Or they'll confiscate all your guitars
And catch 22 says if I sing the truth
They won't make me an overnight star
Don't offer us legal protection
They use the law to commit crime
I dread to think what the future will bring
When we're living in gangster time
Bernie Rhodes knows Don't Argue

Rest easy Terry! The specials changed my life.
I've been a mod since I was a little kid and this one hurts like hell.
Thank you for the glorious legacy of music you with us.
❤️❤️❤️❤️🕴🏿🕴🏻🕴🏾🕴🏻🕴🏽🕴️❤️❤️❤️❤️
So incredibly sad we've lost another specials legend ,Hope you meet up with Bradders up there ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Well said. Terrible loss of a super talent 💔
Yes this one is a real tough one
Well said.
I feel your pain right now. The Specials had a huge influence on my teenage mind. ❤️
19th March 2024
Remembering Terry on what would have been his 65th birthday. Much missed.......
R.I.P 🙏🏻
I am coming up to My 60 ! This is one of the Best from Thatchers Britain .
This is one the greatest ska anthems in history and people need to know.
I know.
But Terry did other great. Fun Boy Three.
saw them in Paris (Le Gibus) in front of 100 persons, best conditions, I was stunned, one of the best concert in my whole life, Still remember it !
@@billyhill9997 Fun boy three has such beautiful songs (the tunnel of love, our lips are sealed, etc ...)
Word....
@@tarantellalarouge7632 and I’m very jealous 😊
One of the best song out,, am 55 years young female, I absolutely adore this song, was am still a big fan of Terry and his gang,, and yes I was a rude girl,, with all the get up,, and proud,, best years of my life listening to this kind of music,,
RIP Terry Hall,, 🙏 ❤️❤️❤️
Rock on, Girlio. I'm a year older than you.
Hey Jacqueline, I have 4 years on you, so a similar vintage. Time is certainly flying by. I was a punk but of course liked the whole variety of music from those days. I reckon we really did live through a fantastic era for music my friend. And to think of it, a fantastic time for some crazy and wonderful fashion, well styles at least.
We ruled the world, all but for a brief moment in time.
Lol I’m 55 too&loved these&was a Rude girl too 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
👍😎
Me to sweetheart am 52 years young still rude girl same hair cut now just had chemotherapy no choice lolxx rip Terry 😢
RIP Terry Hall. Very sad to hear this news tonight. You made the world a better place with your lyrics and tunes. Rest easy ❤️
They weren't his lyrics or tunes, they were Jerry Dammers.
@@FFM0594 a lot of the first album were cover versions
I will adoro you
Such a legend ❤️
where you from? indonesia or malaysia?
'They use the law to commit crime'.....never a truer word. Thanks Terry

Awwwww no way !! R.I.P. !!!! );
😢
Reminds me of city centre night club cov bang on 😎😁
King of the rim shot!
Serious inquiry from america: What's the difference between Teddy boy and Rude boy ?
We're living in Real Gangster Times boys. You fucking called it.
Yep your right, 90% fantasising 10% real.
Still loving this song after all these years! Rest in power Terry Hall.
Absolutely gutted, a massive influence on my youth, Rest well Terry, thanks for the amazing memories 😢
Two tones for ever. Black and white togheter.
What a lovely comment! ❤
Well said and so true
2Tone Army 4ife
Rest in peace Terry Hall from a proud Cov girl 🏁💙 I was just about old enough to see their 30th anniversary tour in 2009...how lucky to have witnessed the best live band to ever come out of the UK :')
"You can't fight corruption with politics. They use the law to commit crimes. I dread to think what the future will bring..." As a citizen of the future they worried about, I can say their concerns were valid.
"Con tricks" apparently, but not really any different at times.
Yes !!
speak the truth and they won't make you a star... i.e. you will be censored and suppressed.
In the 80s we had what I would call a moment of clarity. We saw the writing on the wall and we danced to it.
Yep another "after a brief illness" wonder if he'd had any inoculations recently? I dread to think how far these genocidal maniacs will go, esp as the masses accept ever new mandate no questions asked 😔
RIP Terry Hall, such a sad loss at 63 years old, brilliant singer, classic songs
Forever a Legend. Rip Terry Hall.
First Ska song I ever heard it my life as a kid and I fell in love with The Specials. Their music is magic I swear
They are Amazing!! Especially live! :D
me too
Tokyo Inooshi
Tokyo Inooshi Prince Buster beat from "Al Capone" song ripped off by Specials, but it worked so whatever. "Don't call me Scarface" was the lyric from the Prince Buster song
Tokyo Inooshi your rigth i jus saw them in mexico city, just amazing
They are amazing live right?!! Theor performance on SNL of this song is still one of my favorite TV performances ever hehe
Hearing 'Gangsters' for the first time aged 10 just totally blew me away! RIP Terry Hall.
Me too
Me to what a band.Rip terry
That's the joy of You Tube; a whole treasury of music out there for you to discover and enjoy! 😊
RIP Terry Hall. You left some legendary music mate 🙏
I still have my favorite two tone suit, skinny tie, braces and pork pie hat but nothing fits anymore! It must all have shrunk over the years. Thanks for posting.
+imjustabadpenny
Yeah! It's the damp climate of your wardrobe that caused it to shrink.
I have the same problem.
+imjustabadpenny your badges should still fit if you kept them. If you didn't .......shame on you!!
imjustabadpenny if you live in England. You could always try Camden market London.
Or your getting bigger.!
Funny that, it happened to me and all the lads, only the DM's didn't shrink. It must have been too many hot washes in cheap washing machines.
I tell a lie, the Loafers still fit.
Released today 40 years ago, one of the greatest debut singles ever.
lawrence ralph totally agree
Absolutely mate, good days..........great music memories
I was 15, at a language school in Bournemouth, Gangsters flashed me completely!
The Specials entire first album (which included "Gangsters") is one of my favourite debut albums, every cut is excellent.
@@arndbachler6902 i was -15 i love ska
RIP Terry! The Specials got me through a hellish adolescence and early adulthood. I don't know if I would even be here if it wasn't for them.
My friend since kindergarten always loved these guys, he asked me to give them another chance, he passed away suddenly, I was then left with the Specials as his last request from me.. WOW they are incredible and extremely underrated.. Thank u Eric
That's one lovely story in your life ..❤️🇮🇪
Extremely underrated?
Keep the faith
Beg much?
RIP to your friend he had a knack for good tunes
Its taken me 20 years of quite liking The Specials to realising how truly great they were. The image. The social comment and racial vibe of white and black youth attitude together as one still never topped or anything near it. Then the music. Their reign was short but grows in stature each year.....as I prove here just finally getting them after these years. Legends
Terry had such a fantastic voice.
Almost perfect for SKA.
RIP Prince Buster, died today aged 78. The Godfather of Ska
the king of ska
EXACTLY ..LEGEND
your a lonely as well all are and no that.
Sharon Renton you'll have to write that properly,i can't understand you.
The original lineup burned very brightly for a very short time, but sometimes I marvel at just how absolutely awesome this original lineup of The Specials was. Truly fantastic.
Do you mean the mid 70's Coventry special outfit
@@jamesmcmanus1192 So, skinny ties, Fred Perry and Docs for the boys and nudity for the girls on horseback. Viva Coventry!
kkkkkk
RIP Terry Hall timeless forever strong ,rude boy.
Still a killer tune, never gets old.
When a song can remain timeless it is pure genius. Thank you Specials!!
This is my favorite song ♡♡
Ha
Agreed
Rest in peace Terry Hall, lead singer with the Specials, you've done too much, Much too young.
Still gutted by the loss of Terry Hall..
I absolutely love this song. It's the very first record I ever bought at 11 years old in 1979 and it will always be one of my all time favourites. Pure Class. Æ
Aged 12, bought "Gangsters" in the record store in "The Arcade". B-Side was The Selecter. Brought the single home. Played it. Still love this music a billion years later, living in the US. Can't believe I'm saying this, but I miss Coventry.
I've got the very same 45
Yea Susi
Moi aussi.
Rest in Peace, Terry. You have seen life and will remain an inspiration. God bless your family, friends and fans.
Devastated at the passing of Terry Hall! I’m having real flashbacks going through all of these old videos and performances though! Rest in peace Terry! You left an amazing legacy! 😢💔
RIP Terry you will be much missed loved this band so much so lucky to see them live just amazing ❤️
The world's best foot stomping sound ever, thank you Terry and the boys. 🕶🎼 R.I.P. Terry Hall.

The Specials had a profound effect on my life and is the sound track of my youth, thanks to all the band and Rest in Peace Terry, you will never be forgotten. I can't believe I was only watching video after video the other night of new and old gigs and then I hear this sad news.
Songs probably more relevent now than when 1st released.
+007raad No probably about it,sir. We never had foodbanks in 1979 or legalized loan sharks on every High Street.
And what is more appropriate than ghost town. Sad days now !
Can you imagine the reaction of people in 1979 if we told them just how awful their futures were going to be in 2016?
If they worked in the shipbuilding industry or mining, that their industries would disappear off the face of the Earth, that you'd need to get a degree to work stacking shelves in Tesco and rack up an amount of money equal to a mortgage for the privilege.
I think they'd down tools and go on indefinite strike.
But this was before the government sale of council houses happened which effectively took the fight out of the working man at a stroke. Clever, these politicians eh?
You would be laughed at. People would not think it could be possible.
these bands and many like them at the time were conveying in song what the average man on the street felt, the messages were there sung by all of us at the time and not really understanding the truth as told
This song immediately takes my mind back to my childhood, getting suited and booted and heading into town with my mates. Bunking off school and getting into trouble. Epic
Terry...you handled the hard knocks gracefully. The music was one of a kind. Life can be a sick place, but you showed intelligence and heart in your music! R.i.p
Rest in peace Terry Hall 🙏
Feel so sad 😞 I was a teenager growing up to the sounds of ska.
The Specials were such a big part of life in those days and their music resonated with me on a deep level. He will be sorely missed 😢 gone but never forgotten 💔 😢
How can anyone not give this the the thumbs up,
Too soon, too young. RIP Terry, you legend ❤💔
bought this record at 13yrs old now 48yrs still best buy
me too ;)
You're my age! Cheers!
One of the first cassettes I bought with my own money was The Skatalites best of. All waves of ska are timeless music.
Me to now 60 lol....
bought this at 11, now 14
I grew up in this era of genuine diversity and equality, I'm disappointed how successive generations seemed to destroy that.
Blame MAGA not the younger gens
@@jamesetal7088yeh cos their woke as f*ck 😂
Stop making it about race and maybe it will get better, because if you think you are better, guess what you are...
If you think it’s maga then you’ve fallen for it Just think for yourself and you’ll discover how the left and far left incites division how bout you read Sal Alinsky’s rules for radicals the leftists/socialists playbook and educate yourselves
@@jamesetal7088 i don't know about that. maybe it didn't help when the CIA introduced gangster rap to the hood. before that, rap was "these are the breaks" or "rappers delight" it was a lot more fun. then it got sinister.
Descansa Terry , ahora eres inmortal ,siempre estarás en nuestros corazones ,saludos desde la Ciudad de México 🇲🇽
the casual nature of the delivery hides the brilliance of this composition
they really don't make them like this any more ...
Thank-you so much Terry for being so amazingly brilliant and versatile in what you did for generations of music lovers......I followed you pretty much through from The Specials and onwards.....so much integrity in what you did.......always exploring with new genres.......and there was something definitely quite cool about your presence......really loved you and what you did....RIP my friend......xxxxxxxxx🥰
I'm not a huge fan of 2 tone, but always loved the Specials &, especially, Fun Boy Three. The loss of Terry Hall has knocked me for 6. His talents will be seriously missed, & my sincere condolences to all those who loved him.
You British, you have style, you've always had it.
I mean it's really Jamaican style but aye, Rudeboy style is where it's at.
ALWAYS......
@lvan Big Nob No I'm almost positive that's just Skinhead subculture, The rudeboy subculture originated in Jamaica.
Why thank u, we do indeed.
@Doug Richardson whoa, it sounds amazing over there. Big ol' doobies & cocktails by the pool whilst listening to ska. I bet you haven't just endured 6 months of rain either.
Ooofftttt! I always loved Terrys haunting voice on these lyrics. Gotta dance now!
Yess
RIP Terry, your music was my youth
Coventry's finest.
Coventry lad here i.m 62 now lol saw them first time round they disappeared came back saw them second time around
I finally really get it. Always been digging old school (1st and 2nd wave) ska, but just in the last couple weeks or so, something clicked with Madness and a few 2 Tone acts, particularly The Selecter and The Specials...
Their stuff is just brilliant. I'm surprised I don't see more people talking about the drum sounds. Beats and everything and production so on point, perfectly complimenting the vocal parts.
The whole thing is so tight, I can see why they're ostensibly the most influential band to come from that scene. Truly brilliant, eternal music.
The Beat, Mirror in the Bathroom, Hands off She's Mine, saw all the Bands In Brum.
Great song..... I loved it in 1979 and I love it in 2024 too
RIP Terry. Legend.
We are living in gangster times 2021? They use the law to commit crime...
2024 it iz....
Rest in Peace Terry Hall. Thank you for the sound of our youth.
A classic ..... never fails to get me all nostalgic for my youthful exuberance..... 1979, a lifetime ago.
Exuberance.
A word that has no meaning in the shit-tip time we’re living in now.
Remember how popular ska was in my home town of Limerick in the south West of Ireland in late 70s /early 80s. Hordes of skinhead, bootboy, nutty boy gangs and endless fighting at teenage discos. Many of the top bands like Madness and Bad Manners came and played too. Great days to be young in.
Respect from Belfast. 👍
A classic that shows how music should be ….catchy uplifting and carrying a message!!
1979 to 1981. They were the best band on the planet. No one could touch them.
Well said
Well said Daz,totally agree..
Absolutely. What a band.
I’ve just rediscovered them living my time again
Totally agree. They delivered ska to the masses. Such a unique style of music. Their new album is good too (Encore. 2019) Vote for Me.
Thank you for so many wonderful songs. Your impact on the world of music will live on.
Terribly sad news about Terry Hall's death. I saw them live at The Hammersmith Palais in London back in the summer of 1979 when they were the opening act (together with Lew Lewis Reformer) for Rockpile. I was 15 years old at the time and it was my first truly great concert experience...
Requiescat in pace
A timeless classic from the Specials!!
Lyrics more relevant to EVERYONE today.
Très triste d'apprendre le décès si jeune de Terry. Condoléances à ses proches et à tout ceux qui l'aimait.
I have always thought Terry Hall was a brilliant lyricist.
The Specials were and always will sound great!
R.I.P John Bradbury, what an awesome drummer.

Just discovered this band/song. Can’t believe this came out when I was 1.5 years old. Been completely obsessed with it this past week. ❤️
RIP Terry Hall. 63 is so young.
Incredible band from Coventry, I'm from Glasgow and listened to The specials growing up and always felt a real connection with everything they had to say about Britain at the time, so proud of them and rest your soul Terry
Sweet
RIP Mr. Hall. Thank you for making my youth so Special.
Wow still has that vib ....r.i.p. mr hall ,,and thanks buddy for the music
Having a specials night as always, few beers sound pumped up ,almost sobbing, can’t believe the legend is not with us skanksters , luv ya terry
To say this album was central to my development as a human being is a huge understatement. I never went in for the whole look (couldn't afford it). But I played this album till it crumbled to dust.
Interestingly Gangsters was originally a single only release, added to the album later when it got a cd release.
I had never heard the Specials until first year university, although I had the Special AKA album in high school. Free Nelson Mandela? Anyone, anyone? Yes hearing the Specials for the first time is a wake up call, especially if you're enjoying the music with a cool nerdy boy from England who is about to become your best friend for life. We also bonded over Kate Bush, Tom Waits, the Pogues, Nikolai Gogol and the fact that we are both technically bastards (born out of wedlock). Our knee-slappingly funny attempts to function in a shared basement apartment and our stressful "vacation" in New York will have to wait for another time.
🖤 Terry rip 19-12-2022
RIP another absolute Legend died suddenly after a brief illness 🙄
When will people wake up to the common denominator in all these 'brief illness/sudden deaths"??? He spoke for his generation but most of his generation are asleep & complying so who will speak for him? REST IN PEACE TERRY 🙏🕊thanks for the most amazing 🎶
Well put
I don't want to be a Punk no more. I wanna be a Rude Boy, like my dad.
erase all frontiers... even the ones in music
Ha! We used to say that when we were teenagers! Blast from the past. From watching Sid and Nancy.
Same. Was wondering if anyone would get it since the movie is so old. I don't even know if this generation has watched it yet. Love that movie even though Lydon said it was a shit. Gonna have to watch it tonight! :D
BORIN' Sidney FUCKIN" BORIN" !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Remember playing this on my bike radio
When I was 14 years old great times thank you.
Bernard Rhodes must have really worked these guys hard for them to put him in the song ! He definitely made this a great album !
RIP Terry Hall 😢😢
RIP Terry 😔
RIP Terry. Back in '79 Terry, as the front man, was probably the biggest influence on me in my youth and remained so throughout. Thoughts with your family and friends. And for Brad's family who passed at a similar time of year.
This is my favourite Specials track. Everything about it is so cool. 😎 Terry Hall always looked sad,
But I bet it was the best days of his life! Ska lives on forever.....
A couple of years ago, Terry Hall was diagnosed with clinical depression..I remember him on the radio afterwards explaining his sad expression all those years..Poor bloke! ..Great band.I was too young for punk but was completely ready when the Ska revival came around and the Specials were always out in front of everyone else at the time..I seen them later in my life at the 30th anniversary tour at Hammersmith Eventim Apollo...It was full of old style skinheads and a fight broke out!! 👀..It was just as though time stood still and it was still early 80's.Great night!! 😅🕴️🎹🎷🎺🎸🏁
Played this at my friends 50th last night, awesome! 😎
Best group of the 80s ⚪️⚫️
I got this album in '82 so I think these guys were over as a band by then. I just started listening to it again (thank god I saved all my vinyl). What a fucking perfect mix of ska, punk, Caribbean. This is my choice for bands "that should have bigger worldwide".
They were done by then
Rest in Peace, Terry! God bless you.
R.i.p.Terry Hall
That's Jerry Dammers, the brains behind the band. Principal songwriter, co-founder of 2 Tone Records and all round legend.
Dont forget another key figure of 2 tone ska DJ Don Letts
