French television has captured some wonderful live performances by great bands over the years. My favourite is Os Mutantes, but this is pretty wonderful as well. R.I.P., Terry my friend.
The Specials were lightning in a bottle. Jerry Dammers had a vision and assembled a perfect blend of musicians to realize it. Stupid Marriage has Terry Hall’s punk delivery and the frenzied band swirling around him cresting into a tremendous wave by the time it crashes with Gangsters. What a band. Rest easy, Terry. You’ve earned it.
Agreed. I ain't seen better footage of what I saw and heard in London in 1981. I shocked by how tight they already were in '79. As for this crowd - worst ever.
Well, I was there and clearly remember those ginormous tv cameras + crew constantly moving around being a real nuisance to the front rows. Now Jerry and the guys were well aware of this too and after the filming was done and with the cameras gone, they promptly played the set all over again - 'and this time for real'. I can tell you that was a completely different experience for the band as well as for the audience and a great time was had by all.
I was just going to say, filming live TV shows was very very different 40 years ago. How amazing they redid the set! When the Specials first played NY in 1979/80, the club Hurrah had the gall to charge SEVEN DOLLARS...there was literally a protest with fliers everywhere because shows were never more than $5 lol
Sorely missed already what a band what a time to be alive. I'm 54 now and still feel like a teenager whenever the ska starts. God bless you Terry Hall..
Watching this 40 years later just highlights how original and groundbreaking The Specials really were, totally groundbreaking stuff. I bought their debut album the week it was released, an album I still listen to to this day and it still sounds as good 40 years later as it did in 1979.
God bless your soul Terry Hall. The guy himself in an amazing bands prime, and he will be sadly missed and I will be praying for his family and Merry Christmas to all The Specials posse🎅💖😊🙏
I love the whole Two Tone Rude boys and girls Era! The Ska Revival of the early Eighties. The music was brilliant, hard driving, danceable, smart and fun. The Two Tone label was legendary and I like how it brought together black and white with music. Ska had the energy of Punk and it’s own fashion sense. Pork pie hats and suits with white socks. Rude boys and girls skanking all night. Great times!
They were due to record in November but Terry got ill just before, two months later he is dead. The Specials had unique qualities and his voice and cool presence was one of the them RIP
I never get over the sheer power and impact of The Specials. This captures the band at the top of their game ready to clean up. Glad the audience woke up at the end, perhaps they were mesmerised by their sheer brilliance.
I saw Terry and the Specials in Brighton in 2019 and again in September 2021 and both times you were epic. I am 58 this year and grew up with the Specials and I absolutely loved Terry Hall so I am heartbroken that he is gone so soon, much much too young. I will always love your music RIP Terry. I hope you are happier now ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
RIP Terry, too soon, too sudden,You had So Much more to Give,to Get and to Live for (Protest Songs Album So suited Your Style Brother) My Heartfelt Love to Your Family and Friends and Fans for Your Loss. John,Ireland.
Concrete Jungle, by the The Specials. One of my favourite tunes of all time! First things first, I do not carry a knife but I can relate to this song and these lyrics!" The specials, "I'm going out tonight I don't know if I'll be alright Everyone wants to hurt me Baby danger in the city I have to carry a knife Because there's people threatening my life I can't dress just the way I want I'm being chased by the national front Concrete jungle, animals are after me Concrete jungle, it ain't safe on the streets Concrete jungle, glad I got my mates with me!"
now 60 years old i was in my teens when i heard the specials for the first time been in to motorbikes and rock music i was confused how could i like ska aswell im i a mod or a rocker people used to ask still in to bikes rock and ska you can be both now i guess thanks tezzer
Cheers Bikkebooboo, 17 minutes and six quality songs of utter carnage, judging by the audience reaction shows you the time it took back in the day for news to travel of good new young bands.
The soundmix is incredible for a live recording from that era, you can hear all the little details of guitar, keyboards and base, even looking at it on a smartphone. Except on “Gangsters”, something most’ve gone wrong there
Yes, bad echo on Gangsters. But otherwise great show! yes, the crowd was pretty lifeless there. But maybe this kind of music was new to them back then and they looked pretty young.
We're Madness with em on tour - a school mate had a dead cool bootleg double L P às clear as mustard , I can recall the yanks chatting away in between the nuttey boys Rockin the place
Just too add, there is parody, great musicianship, totally unique vocals from Terry Hall. Also the cross culture message for the kids, never heard anything like it in 1979.
absolutely brilliant , takes me back to when i was a Rude Boy teenager , oh they were great times for music dance and fashion , we had a community with music , we were one
I got some braces from somewhere at the two tone tour in 1979 at potternewton park leeds. I remember other kids joking about them and me still thinking they were the coolest things ever. Good times. X
0:54 Monkey Man
3:25 Do the Dog
5:31 Concrete Jungle
9:05 Stupid Marriage
12:30 Too Much Too Young
14:37 Gangster
You Are Beautiful!
Thanks a lot, just mess on this perform "Message to Rudy"
French television has captured some wonderful live performances by great bands over the years. My favourite is Os Mutantes, but this is pretty wonderful as well. R.I.P., Terry my friend.
GangsterS (thanks)
@@colinwilson4609 except this is a Belgian TV show, if you had taken the time to check the description "from the Belgian television show "Folllies."
RIP Terry Hall. Your music continues to make the world a better place.
Legend never die.
How can the audience not be dancing? I'm watching it on RUclips in my living room 40 years later and I'm bouncing around the room.
coz white people need more courage to give up the "good life"
I'm not sure what you mean I'm white I havent stopped dancing since this music infected .me at school
Wtf is the good life
I thought the same about the audience lol I was cooking dinner & dancing whole time!
I was just about to post the same thing.
Every so often a real gem gets posted on RUclips, this is one of them.
A class band at the birth of an era.
my era
I totally agree but what is up with the crowd? It's hard to spot anyone so much as clapping. I'm watching on a computer and can't stay in my seat.
best band ever
Agreed. I ain't seen better footage of what I saw and heard in London in 1981. I shocked by how tight they already were in '79. As for this crowd - worst ever.

veejoe1 SOOOO envious!

Very cool of them . To bad a smart camera person did'nt shoot the 2nd set .
That's good to know because I kept saying "get up and skank you sleepy Belgiques!"
On this take the crowd seemed real uptight and tense.
Sorely missed already what a band what a time to be alive. I'm 54 now and still feel like a teenager whenever the ska starts. God bless you Terry Hall..
I’m a teenager who feels old when the ska plays, but I miss Terry like I knew him since 1979
THIS is why RUclips was invented. One of the best ever UK bands in their prime.
Thanks for sharing this gem.
It was invented for spreading degeneracy but they can’t stop great content like this getting through
If I had have been there, there's absolutely no way I would have been standing still!!
no kidding....what was wrong with those people
@@manuelkong10 They are all bourgeoises.
At my junior School disco in 81 we danced our socks off to this, no-one was still.... better tines and music
I'm bourgeois. You still wouldn't see me standing still to these tracks. To be fair though, theres a large group getting down
it was a bit of a shock to them ,lol ,40yrs on no one stands still while trhe Specials are on
One of the best uploaded footage of the Specials I have ever seen
A superb band live
Terry Hall was absolutely mesmerising what a presence RIP
that's right
Incredibly static audience, guess French kids were all reading Camus and too cool to dance…
My uncles pub 1979
RIP my friend ❤
God bless Brad’s soul. What a drummer of taste and skill.
We have lost a musical legend but the music lives on .
Thank you Terry Hall and all associated with the Specials .
Forever listening … ❤
The best band of my generation. R.I.P Terry and John. Sadly missed.
Terry had a gentle face and voice to match with strong messages that touches many hearts to this day. Love to his family.
God Bless Terry Hall! Y’all changed the world for better!!!❤❤❤❤
RIP Terry Hall. You brought so much to so many of us. The world is a better place for you and your spark.
That was a fantastic set, shame the audience didn't think so. A true gem.
R.I.P. Terry, now singing from Heaven! Thank you, kind soul, for your passion!
Watching this 40 years later just highlights how original and groundbreaking The Specials really were, totally groundbreaking stuff. I bought their debut album the week it was released, an album I still listen to to this day and it still sounds as good 40 years later as it did in 1979.
With an audience like that it’s amazing that The Specials carried on.
God bless your soul Terry Hall. The guy himself in an amazing bands prime, and he will be sadly missed and I will be praying for his family and Merry Christmas to all The Specials posse🎅💖😊🙏

I love Terry's absolute PROFANITY he gets away with on French TV!
I remember gazing at Terry Hall's face as a 13 yr old & thinking how beautiful he was.
I never get over the sheer power and impact of The Specials. This captures the band at the top of their game ready to clean up. Glad the audience woke up at the end, perhaps they were mesmerised by their sheer brilliance.
Neville Staple electrifying! Terry Hall distinctive and perfect! Both perfect frontmen!
But... but.. but they're just standing... How on earth can they NOT be dancing?? 😮
RIP Terry. Brad's got a cold beer waiting for you. Rest easy 😢
Rest In Peace Terry ❤😢
Terry Hall is so handsome!
When I saw them back in 2006 I couldn't believe how young Terry looked even then. He's not aged much...!
I remember seeing them, Selector and Madness, KGH Blackburn, October/November 1979, one of the best concerts ever.
They are totally killing it and the crowd is motion-less
I know, what the hell is that? They even tried to get the audience clapping along at 5:37 and only two people joined in!
Me then 12yrs - Amazing !! ....... Me now 57yrs - Brilliant !!!!!
It doesn’t get any better than this 🔥🔥👊👊👍👍
Great footage, they made the world dance. Mr. Hall may your legacy shine.
The audience are having sooooo much fun!
At the top of their game here. Damn.....even the bass lines are perfect.
especially the bass is perfect
This is one of the danciest bands to have ever existed and I am completely in awe by how still the crowd is managing to stand.
In 1979 the UK had some amazing bands, the epicentre of all music then, punk, skin, mod. I was 10 but this music still lives with me
I saw Terry and the Specials in Brighton in 2019 and again in September 2021 and both times you were epic. The energy of this performance is just awesome. Love it.
Thank you for posting this. R.I.P. Terry Hall
RIP Terry Hall, your music has and will influence me for life.
One of the best bands ever... I wish I could’ve seen them live! You lot who saw them live are lucky lucky dogs
They were awesome....👍
Saw their 1980 U.S. tour stop in Minneapolis at Duffy's, a small club held just a couple hundred people.
Saw them in 81/82ish in ROTHERHAM (Clifton park) when I was in care !!!! (Keppels view)
FTS
Rip Terry cxx
The first band I ever saw live at The Apollo in Glasgow, great memories of a brilliant band.
IN 1980 I WAS THERE MADNESSS THE BODYSNATCHERS SWINGING CATS AND MADNESS
No voy a hacer la necrologica porque The Specials era mi felicidad de la edad que es todo gratis y asi los recordare por siempre
Jerry Dammers certainly knows how to have a great time.
fuck yeah. what a bunch of lames.dammers and crew great show despite lack of soul or even manners
I don’t always listen to the specials but when I do so do my neighbours
😄💥
How can you not be bouncing to this
This was indeed at their best with a tight performance. RIP Terry Hall & John Bradbury.
RIP Terry, too soon, too sudden,You had So Much more to Give,to Get and to Live for (Protest Songs Album So suited Your Style Brother) My Heartfelt Love to Your Family and Friends and Fans for Your Loss. John,Ireland.
That audience is solid, this is the best of English music, arise Mr Hall.
This is the same year I got to see them on the two tone tour in the uk, been hooked ever since.
Rest in Peace Terry Hall, thanks for the great music
Did anybody else realize this band is the best ever appeared?

This early specials performance is brilliant.
Totally agree 👍
The fusion of britanic rock with reggae, very good.
The modest soul has left the band.RIP
🎈 J'adore ce groupe, que j'écoute depuis plus de 40 ans !
Rest in Peace Terry.
I'm so happy I saw this.

Little Gem 💎 this piece, thanks ❤..What a tune Stupid Marriage is, and how right you were tel

Thought it was cool at first. Then it was unfortunate
Yes, bad echo on Gangsters. But otherwise great show! yes, the crowd was pretty lifeless there. But maybe this kind of music was new to them back then and they looked pretty young.
This is so excellent.
So tight. Precision… So much practice! 🙏
RIP Terry Hall LEGEND
They are back and still relevant today! Thanks for sharing. :)
Saw these guys in Palo Alto in early 80s in an old movie theater and it was life changing.
They played the City in S.F on Feb. 13, and The Catalyst in Santa Cruz on Feb. 16, 1980. I saw them 2 nights later in Minneapolis in a small club.
We're Madness with em on tour - a school mate had a dead cool bootleg double L P às clear as mustard , I can recall the yanks chatting away in between the nuttey boys Rockin the place

that's one bewildered audience
Mega. I love the Specials 👍
The best. Simply the best

Great times in Coventry great memory's

I got some braces from somewhere at the two tone tour in 1979 at potternewton park leeds. I remember other kids joking about them and me still thinking they were the coolest things ever. Good times. X

Great gig.
