I would love to see you do Under Cover of Darkness. The perfect middle transition part between Reptilia and Selfless. Otherwise if you picked an Is This It song you should do Barely Legal!
Great suggestion! I love everything about this song, not just the vocals. Agree that’s the perfect encapsulation of where they came from and where they were heading at exactly midway through their career so far (2011 I believe)
It’s definitely intended though! He slides from 3rd fret all the way to 12 / 13 and plays the same patters an octave up. It’s the hardest part of the entire song because of how fast you need to get there (about 1/16 note amount of time)
That's the Rick Rubin compression. The release is so low that the moment the guitarist stops playing for even a 10th of a second, it shoots up and amplifies the guitar noise. It's cool and adds character to the song.
I love Julian Casablancas so much. He truly has changed as an artist and vocalist! I love the strokes, all of their albums are bangers in my opinion and I love how they have changed so much in the years!
Cried jamming this album the first time, you can really hear the band having a blast here and seeing/hearing their growth together after going their own ways really hit a spot. It was insane, I love this album. They've really evolved.
Brodood, you are the absolute best. Your deep dive into perhaps the greatest sonic moment in Strokes history (“I don’t want aanyyyyonnnne”) is pure gold. Love the masterclass on that micromoment. That’s what makes you the king. You are not just covering the bases. You head into the weeds as needed. Thank for you that.
I love you. Your advice on taking the excess air out of the high head notes allowed me to finally nail that final falsetto. I was convinced my voice would not allow me to hit that note. Thank you soo much! My wish is answered. You helped me find my voice!
I've been aware of The Strokes and Julian for yeeeeeears but clearly I've been sleeping on them because this is right up my street! He has such an exciting voice, so characterful. Love your videos, Chris. Best vocal analyses on YT :)
So cool to hear Julians vocal evolution broken down like this. Really shows how expressive we can be in our head voice. Congrats on hitting 200k Chris ! You so deserve it !!
Please keep them coming Chris.. I have thoroughly enjoyed Julian Cascablancas series on Your channel man. You are doing such a unique job by doing these kind of videos. It's much more fun to learn this way through live examples of your favorite singers.
Never thought I'd be able to get this level of analysis from one of my favourite artist's songs. Many thanks Chris!!! Regarding Julian's voice evolution: The first 2 records were made pretty much back to back and with the same producer, so they sound really similar and his style didn't really change. He was also still suffering from alcoholism. He quit booze before the third album, First Impressions of Earth, and that's where you see him start to experiment and evolve his vocals, but still no head voice. There's even a lyric "you taught me how to sing" where I wonder if he is actually referring to vocal coaching. In the 4th album Angles on the first track his head voice appears, pretty close to the way it is now, but it's buried in vocal layers. In Taken for a Fool the clean mixed voice is out in full force though. Then in the 5th album Comedown Machine, the head voice is the dominant vocal layer in the first track Tap Out, and the final track Call It Fate, Call It Karma, he finally lets his head voice ring out unaccompanied in what sounds like an amazing 50's Hawaiian ballad. He has further refined and experimented since then, but I think the bulk of the change happens between First Impressions, Angles, and Comedown Machine.
I think the feeling I get from the songs from this album is vulnerable. He's singing with parts of his voice that are probably not his most comfortable, but very very appropriate for the feeling of the song. This song in particular, being about the nuance and complexities of close relationships where you may value the relationship itself over the consist adherence to your choices and principles and accepting that you'll get another chance to do things "right" down the line. It just matches very well.
I love these videos! Julian Casablancas is one of my favourite singers and songwriters and hearing you break it down and emulate it is so fascinating :) Can't wait for more!
Awesome video! If you’re interested in your spare time I definitely recommend checking out the SNL performance of this song. Julian adds more verses at the end of the song and his vocals really shine through in this performance in particular. Anyways keep these vids coming these breakdowns are so cool!
OMG THIS WAS A REAL SURPRISE Chris u are the best vocal couch ever 😩❤ i find it hard searching for couches and understand from them how to sing like julian but the way u do it omg thank u , ur videos are AWESOME. OMG I'M SUPER ENERGETIC THANK U
My goodness! I just watched the selfless video yesterday and was reading through the comments, wondering which song you would do next. You got this one out really fast!
I truly believe his work with The Voidz took him to another level. His experimentation with new sounds and style mixed with his maturity has unlocked his true potential. Great video, look forward to more on Julian!
when are we doing The Voidz man? He's thrown some of the best vocals of his career in that. Also, his vocals on Drag Queen and Oblivious are incredible too
It’s awesome that your doing his voice. Personally I love that band im a huge fan. Their style of music has a huge influence in my style of music with guitar and voice.
I like how you react with comments it shows you read them which does build a community keep it up 👍👍 and good analysis btw! ive learned so much about noticing purposeful voice alterations it’s really cool actually ahaha
Love all of This videos, The Strokes is one of my favorite bands, and Julian obviusly is one of my favorite singers, maybe The Next video could be analyzing Oblivius, in that song Julian sing so high and has a really good mixed voice, or maybe analyze his other band, The Voidz, the style is very different than The Strokes
Thank you, Chris. These insights are great fun to experiment with :D As for a suggestion, I'd love to hear some Sting vocal analysis. His voice is absolutely fascinating to me :D
I've commented in another video and i'll do it again, you got to listen to "Eternal Summer", such a rich song for a vocal analysis, Julian has really explored his skills in that one. Great video as always!
If you enjoy Julian's head voice I highly recommend analyzing One Way Trigger off of Comedown Machine. Amazing track that is almost exclusively in head voice, and the instrumentals are also very unique and fun for a Strokes track as well.
Great video! You should check out his work with The Voidz, I feel like he sings much differently with his other band. Songs like Pyramid of Bones or Dare I Care come to mind, and I would definitely like you to analyse his voice in those songs!
Padrísimo todo lo que nos cuentas sobre su voz. Muchas gracias y siiii por fa si puedes cuéntanos que piensas de Eternal Summer ☀️❤️. Saludos calurosos
The latest Strokes album is fantastic. I quite like a lot of music that experiments creatively. Super Furry Animal are one of my favourite indie bands and they are quite kaleidoscopic and diverse with their music. Gruff Rhys is the lead singer from Super Furry Animals and hissinging voice is well worth talking about. He
YES!!! More Julian! Thank you!! 💜 Also, I mentioned on another Julian video you should do a Matt Bellamy comparison. By Starlight, I think his vocals had really matured, so maybe do something from an earlier album? Also, Muse releases a new single tomorrow at 10am PST!!
the falsetto in this song is crazy, he still does some crazy things on songs like OBLIVIUS and the end of Games. Also the technique in At The Door used seems like your forte. They're really interesting you might enjoy them. thank you for the insight as always!
Another great video. Julian is a very cool singer. Could you do an analysis of City and Colour? I feel he's a classic alt singer we could learn some things from. Thanks Chris!
Holy smokes, you are a godsend for this video! I love all your videos on The Strokes and was waiting but didn't expect one so soon! Another great song you analyzed! I had a hard time singing along with this (even now, and it's been almost 2 years since release already) because of the head resonance! Like everytime I tried I think I kept doing a "falsetto" and as you said has a more "breathy" sound and I never was happy with it and almost would never sing along with that part. Now I'm gonna carefully practice that by pulling it back of my throat! While it may seem much to ask, I would love more of The Strokes (at your pace of course), but I would like to hear your thoughts on Comedown Machine since that has Julian use his head resonance a lot, but is just more mixed. To be specific on what songs to possibly inspect in his vocals would be One Way Trigger or Call It Fate Call It Karma (I like all the songs but I think you can find a lot to pick in these especially). But I highly recommend for you to check out The Voidz where Julian goes pretty crazy awesome on his vocals and overall music compositions.
Julian's vocal work on The New Abnormal is so stunning and underrated. I think the album gets overlooked because half of it is slower, longer jams...not exactly the classic strokes sound, but Julian brings it and it's such a cool album, a different side of his personality.
Hey not to beat a dead horse with requesting too many songs from the strokes but I'd be really interested to hear your analysis of Julian's vocal performance on the song eternal summer off of the new abnormal. It really showcases almost every trick Julian has in his bag and is, in my opinion, the best vocal performance on the album along with selfless. Just started watching your videos a week or two ago and I am thoroughly enjoying how in depth you go while giving your vocal analysis as well as giving tips and tricks for how to get your voice to mimic the sounds of some of my favorite vocalist. It's really given me a better understanding of how to achieve certain sounds as well as help me understand some of the things I've been doing subconsciously while singing myself. Anyways that's all for my rant. Thank you and keep up the great content👍🤘👍🤘
Also I'd be interested in hearing your take of some Joyce Manor songs. The lead singer is not a traditionally outstanding vocalist but he's got a very unique style that suites their genre very well
Thanks Chris! Loving the content. If you ever get the chance. It’d be great to see you explore using nasality and breath to create a fuller tone. Particularly through Alex Turner and the song Sweet Dreams, TN.
At The Door. That's where it's at. There are no drums and I think it's Julians most beautiful performance, at least with the strokes
Vouch
@@GG_Society Right on!
True!!!!
Yes for sure this one
Agreed

I have to agree, great suggestion.
Hello!!! Please react to under cover of darkness. It's one of Best songs. Julian is amazing in diferents ways. The New abnormal is an epic work!
Or you could do as song from the voids like lazy boy or leave it in my dreams
totally
8:58 that unintended guitar slide sound is awesome. This song sounds really raw and less produced. I love it.
Good catch
It’s definitely intended though! He slides from 3rd fret all the way to 12 / 13 and plays the same patters an octave up. It’s the hardest part of the entire song because of how fast you need to get there (about 1/16 note amount of time)

The high notes on at the door, not the same anymore and ode to the mets are simply amazing
Ode & 15 minutes are my 2 favorite Songs (other than Is This It as a whole). Phenomenal
You might as well do the whole album “The New Abnormal” now since you’ll be flooded with suggestions about each song.
Great video, you should try Human Sadness by The Voidz (the other julian casablancas band), it's like a rollecoaster of emotions and sounds
Oh my god definitely. The only thing is, his voice is very distorted but I think it’d still be worth a video lol
poor chris
OMG YESS
That would be a video of an HOUR XD
@@alejandrajazmin5751 I'm here for it though lol
