In this sneak peek, Ben Baptie reveals the hybrid vocal chain he uses to achieve The Strokes’ saturated vocal sound.
Join mixer Ben Baptie for his debut MWTM series! Hosted at Pony Studios in London, this instalment guides you through Ben’s general workflow and focusses on his mix of ‘The Adults Are Talking’ by American rock band The Strokes. He gives an overview of his studio, hybrid setup, and routing, then dives into the multi-track session to reveal his techniques! You will learn how Baptie combines the use of outboard gear and plug-ins to enrich the sounds of vocals, instruments, and the overall mix. Despite going into detail on parameter settings of various tools, he places emphasis on the importance of intuition and emotion in his approach to any project. He discusses what he learned from his prestigious mentor Tom Elmhirst and elaborates on the psychological aspect of mixing, all the while stressing the importance of having solid technical foundations that allow creativity to flourish! - Видеоклипы

Hahaha, that's so true.
😂
🤣
love the strokes and love this walk through. The more of these you watch, the more you realize it's a similar process for a lot of vocals. Slight variations depending on the genre, song, singer obviously. But the core of it is mostly the same.
ive been waiting for this for 20 years
Not heard of this guy before, brilliant plain-English explanations of his mix decisions.
Hey Gareth! He assisted Tom Elmhirst for many years before going solo.
this was awesome . thank u.i love the strokes and Juilian is one of my favorite vocalist ever. thank you , for doing such a great job on this song, i love this song and Selfless are some of my favorites songs ever.
he explains it all really nicely. Thx
Great video tutorial. Pretty complex but great results. ❤
I remember Ben getting the Tom Elmhirst job, I was working at the same studio in London. Bens a nice guy and its insane to see how much he has achieved.
I'm still sitting here waiting to hear the final result.
There is a reason this is a teaser.. They are trying to sell the full course in the link
@@skeletonmodel pay money to listen to this dude talk about endless plugins lol
Thanks! It would also be helpful when you are Comparing the two sounds of the two vocals that you would pause your description so we may hear the audible difference.

Really cool homie thank you

i love it!!
It's good to see that Winamp isn't dead
Please bring in dro hildago 🙏🙏
This is great but you didn't show us the final product, i just sat through it all and i wasn't able to hear it after. Kind of annoying.
Their trying to get you to buy the subscription. Always a bummer to watch these ha
They want your $¥€£!!
Ye its the last time I'll bother watching one of these. Its like an artist describing a painting to you and never showing it, not worth my time.
@@thomasonebane they leave enough so if you already know how to produce you can figure it all out. But it would be nice to have these videos as a resource for new producers to learn from.
@@thesneakysloth8481 yeah I don’t have a problem with it. Just selfishly want the vids to keep going
Can someone help? I’m very new to learning hands on producing and mixing; he said he duplicated the vocal.
I thought we couldn’t do that bc of phasing issues? But I thought it was okay to dup if you altered the duped track…
Maybe I misheard or have this all wrong?
It’s more likely to be the other way around. An exact duplicate is the same as simply increasing the volume - you’re just adding more of the same to the signal. A duplicate that is very slightly out of time will result in a sound much like a flanger or phaser. A duplicate that is then phase inverted will, when mixed with the original, result in silence. A vocal duplicate with a decent amount of time and pitch variation can produce a good artificial backing vocal, but this where care needs to be taken to avoid being too similar, or phasing issues (again, sounding like a flanging or phasing effect) can be an issue.
Good stuff
If You let people buy one off videos rather than making us subscribe to everything people would like you a lot more and you would probably make a lot more money in the long run
Ichiban Kasuga
I don’t understand the reason he mentions those two plug-ins in relationship sample/time aligning .. can someone explain it to me please ?
All plugins have a certain amount of latency (how long it takes for the signal to process). This is managed by Pro Tools’s Delay Compensation, which works great but isn’t always perfect.
So he copied and bypassed those two plugins from the parallel channel to give both tracks the same amount of latency. It’s an old school trick, he’s just taking an extra step to ensure exact phase alignment should Delay Compensation not work perfectly.
@@mikehunt5813 thank you, I was referring to what he said about keeping the possible problems you mentioned “in check” by using those plugins. Any ideas there ?
@@documentingordinarythoughts Exactly what Mike said, he's using the same plugins on all channels even if they don't do anything to make sure each channel experiences the same sample delay
lol gotta be careful with the c6 bc it boosts 1db of 1k and 5k at default settings
How does having an instance of L1 on the tracks help keep them in phase?
it's not specific to an instance of L1. using any plugin induces a slight amount of latency for that source. each plugin induces different amounts of latency. if you have several duplicates of that source, one way to ensure they are all in phase alignment is to keep the plugin chain consistent.
@@danielkassulke1879 ah so you just have the identical chain, but turn off the ones you don’t want to have the same latency? But does disabling some not get rid of some latency? Thanks for the reply!
@@calvinlanz7046 I think in PT, bypassing doesn't change the amount of latency. You need to deactivate (ctrl+cmd - click) a plugin to actually make it stop processing/calculating (even if it's bypassed)
What was the programm he used
Isn’t it redundant to use a low cut eq and a Mb compressor at the same time? Since you’re removing them with the eq anyway?
taming dynamics is different from subtractive eq
Didn’t this guys entire crypto exchange, FTX, just crash?
Props to pivoting careers so swiftly.
Hipster Phil Spector? 😁
Which song is this?
The Adults are talking (The Strokes), I believe
@@jonathanhart5019 Thank you so much!
People in here saying this dude doesn't know what he's talking about hahaha, damn. Listen to that vocal maybe? It's amazing. He's incredible
Imagine thinking Ben Baptie is a nobody haha, keyboard warriors as always.
Oh, so it seems SBF found a way out 😂
“As you can hear…” and then he doesn’t stop talking while the vocal track is playing
man!
This...
*Off topic but he looks like Sideshow bob from simpsons*
Shut up!...
i thought the weeknd is making a video
A lot of words
I thought it was Bradley cooper with a wig lol
Using iZotope Trash on Julian's voice is a lazy shortcut to getting his signature sound and I take offense to it.
how is that lazy? its not like that was the whole sound. he just used it as a layer of drive
Should've left it clean unedited
All that high end gear to get a really thin and distorted vocal.. Could be done with the cheapest setup
Many tried and failed though in terms of getting it perfect for the song. That’s why this guy is mixing The Strokes and your audio channel has 43 subscribers
@@Two_Seat_Pete_FatA55 music industry is not about "best ingineer works on the best music"

Of course, I'm sure this guy is very good, just saying it's overkill using all that gear for that specific vocal sound
@@surgicalaudio8829 Sounds great, so that’s what matters.
So he just talks with no examples?!? Whatta waste of time, this ReAllY makes me want to pay money 🙄
