Building a Kitchen in a Shipping Container Home | EP07

- We made built a modern kitchen in this shipping container tiny house. This is a walk-through or galley style kitchen with all of the appliances and plumbing on one side and 12-inch deep pantry cabinets and shelves on the other. We took a hybrid DIY approach and used installation services from Home Depot for the countertops, our construction workers for installing the cabinets, and we did a lot of the shelves and trim ourselves. The most unusual choice we made for this tiny house kitchen design was using an undercounter refrigerator instead of a typical full height fridge. This choice trades fridge space for more countertop and food prep space and since this will be used as a vacation house and Airbnb this trade off makes sense. I did work on a design iteration that used a full height fridge on between the stove and the bathroom and added in a dishwasher as well but that pushed the kitchen room farther into the living and dining space.

Buying the Shipping Containers: We purchased one trip condition hi-cube containers. California requires that shipping containers used for homes have documentation showing that have not had toxic or radioactive materials in them. This normally means that you need one trip condition containers with appropriate certificates. I bought my containers from www.containerd... and paid $4800 each for the 40-foot hi-cube containers and $3250 for the 20-foot hi-cube container. Hi-cube containers are a foot taller than typical shipping containers.

Ah yes, the infamous 3 uploads a year channel we all forget we are subbed to, but love!
thank you for coming back!
@@TheModernHomeProject it is great fun and very interesting, of course I came back! :D
James Lefley me two coming back. I kind of remember the issues with the permitting. The nice complete explanation of your build and thought process is what I like about the channel.
Lol
Denise Kulawik I am not from California. But I have on good information, from people I trust, that the permitting on the last show is not indicative of the process in Cali. It can often be much harder.
Back in my remodeling days I used to judge the previous contractor harshly when I found they didn't paint behind the cabinets. Since paint is first a protectant rather than decoration I always wondered why in the area where water damage and Mold are most often present, they skipped that area. There has to be some reasoning other than "the owner will never know", green board is there or half a pint of paint costs too much. Another practice on my builds is installing flooring completely under the cabinet area for many reasons. First is so the Toe Kick height is not compromised, also the flooring install is much easier than cutting around existing cabinets, the true 36" counter height is maintained, so future remodels won't have to find a substitute to patch the flooring. The additional time to measure and template around cabinets vs the $20 of material just isn't worth leaving a low spot for spills to settle. Ben, you have great reasoning skills, please shed some light on these practices. Be Blessed
Agree 💯% 👍
I was thinking this, paint it and lay floor first. Ill do it this way
@@Mumumama205 I hope my reasoning makes sense. I just never believe that short cuts are better than doing good work. Maybe just me but I never want to miss the opportunity to feel good about my work. Sounds like you are on that same road, be blessed.
I finished my thesis about shipping containers and this series is not done yet, joking aside as an interior designer this series help me alot when I was reasearching the subject.
Everyone in the previous episodes has been criticising him for this project as they reckon he wasted a lot of money for a house in the middle of no where, however they don't know that Ben has been renting the house on airbnb and he's making a ton money back and reckons he's gonna get all the money invested back in few years. The hustle was definitely a lot but all worth it in my opinion, well done Ben
I highly doubt he will make all the money back hes put into this home in just a few years.
I like how so much goes into the 'professional' shoot but the videos on this channel shot by handhelds are subjectively better.
Really cool seeing the pro’s installing counters!! This kitchen is 🔥🔥
Modern Builds really cool seeing a super pro installing trim!

I've been watching Mike for years now and just stumbled upon channel and binging this series. Nice to see ya here. 1800-SUPERPRO!
I absolutely love the final aesthetic of this kitchen. Looks amazing. So happy to see more videos on this project!!
Hahaha that's one tiny fridge! I would need another full size fridge-freezer along with it...
But i guess if you don't cook or on a strict meal plan, it might even be enough for a week. As for me i use a full shelf for sauces, picked and brined stuff...
Awesome! Your videos have helped me in my own container home project out in Florida 👍
awesome! i love hearing that.
I actually got excited watching this particular video. I'm picky, and I love everything you did & every choice made. I've had Silestone quartz counters for 12 yrs & they still look new. Will use them again on my new build. Years ago, I sold Thomasville furniture. Not sure if they're makiing the cabinets or have merely licensed the name, but the brand has always represented a good balance of craftmanship, style & value. Your cabinets--th whole kitchen--is beautiful
love the end where hes laying on the chair. just enjoying all the hard work that has gone in.
Dump the microwave & fix in an extractor fan ... my take. Great skill set and channel.
Works the way it is supposed to. Just Good
Am blown away of the trades used.
Wow, you guys are on the ball. You and your team do great work!😊
Some great tips, love the floating shelves. This home is going to look amazing, good job
This looks so modern and very comfy.. I love the idea.. ❤️❤️👏👏👌
I absolutely love it.... thanks for finally posting this.
The kitchen looks amazing Ben! 😃👌🏻👍🏻👊🏻
Is there a link to the home depot video? Looks like they brought some serious gear along to make it!
Any flex in the oak shelving? I'd be worried about books or a heavy plant. Looks great!
Stunning! Great attention to details...
The series has a lot of good information. Thanks. Why did you not paint behind the cabinets and put flooring under the cabinets? The next person may have other ideas about where to put things and then they will have to match (impossible) or completely change the flooring.
that backsplash detail is amazing!
You speak of over kill throughout the videos. That would be the reason I would hire companies like yours because of that style of work. Great job
So cool right up my alley. Want to do similar but tandem in the mountains!
Really Great and informative
You should give a tour of the completely finished home container when your finished
will do!
Kitchen came out looking great!
Nice design, I like the hexagonal tiles on the back, and how they are all slightly different colors, and irregular top, makes it feel regular / organic. Also I love wide open shelves on the side, combined with some cabinets. The choice of color contrast also is perfect. I am a huge fan of shelves. I think they are biggest invention of humankind. ;D Also I agree, the microwave oven is huge. Never seen that big microwaves myself.
great kitchen , love the series though i wish the back splash tiles at the cooker should be higher
Question for Q&A. Now that its wrapping up, was using shipping containers compared to framing from scratch in this size the economical/practical choice?
I'd really be interested to hear an answer to this as well.
@wortheffort I think it's about "cool" not "cost" "CONTAINERS are COOL"
I’m about a month from finishing my own home in San Diego county. 6 x 40’ containers like a three sided box plus one 20’ on the other end (with garage doors completing the square) as the kitchen with a pass through breakfast bar. Roughly 2800 Sqft. Metal framed for the roof structure inside the containers and the containers themselves framed in a somewhat similar manner as Ben’s
About $140/ft is where my build will shake out. This doesn’t count septic, solar & batteries (I’m in the solar biz and the home is off grid) or permits.
For everything I’ll have around $800k in it.
Seems like a lot but it’s situated on 85 acres with an ocean view about 25 miles away. I could easily turn around and ask $1.75 for the property.
Debating doing a channel about it but not set in stone. While I acted as the general contractor, I’ve never built anything beyond complex ground mounted solar arrays before and I had lots of professional and volunteer help and the containers came pre cut out of Long Beach. Luckily I found this channel as I adopted the second generation of Bens door and window framing and I love the outcome.
I dont think it is cheaper but it will be interesting to hear hi answer ,,,,,i love shipping containers but there is a lot to learn and consider
@@np5687 I hope this is only not cheaper in countries with regulations like in the us since I wanna build something like this in Central Europe ❤️
WOOHOO!! I love this series!! I’ve anticipated each upload! Lol 🙏🏽 Comment 6 😉
thank you! we love this series too but sooo much work. hiring production team to do the next one
@@TheModernHomeProject I understand that completely, I'm a builder. Building the Modern Mountain Cabin series by myself also required recording/editing and posting requires a sharp learning curve. Ben, you certainly do a great job on marketing and presenting your style. Good Stuffruclips.net/video/YNmwRcQzF_o/видео.html
Planning to have one here in the Philippines. Thanks for sharing this video.
Excellent series!
This kitchen is 🔥🔥
Great "little" project. These turned out really great.
Great work! That’s a great looking kitchen.
New video! So exicted!
I love you and really thanks for sharing 👍
A slick snappy video. Ref the V sign from the guy in the garden swing seat (from a UK viewpoint): palm towards the viewer is Churchill's V-for-victory sign; palm away from the viewer is an insult involving sex and travel.
He is so cute!!
very nice presentation , excellent work inside, perfect layout , I really like it man
My issues with the kitchen.
The fridge is too small. Just looking at my own fridge, I don't have much but it still takes up a lot of room inside. The home might need to add an outdoor freezer/fridge, especially with the current events happening as they are and larger food storage for fewer trips matter.
Secondly, there is very little counter space. It looks like there is barely enough room for a single meal. I wonder if there is enough room on the cabinet/storage wall for other amenities like pots and pans plus any thing like rice cookers or crock pots.
I'm sure this is mainly an example home but since people are moving to about this size of homes now I think it needs to be considered. Overall, it's a nice sleek and cozy kitchen.
I literally checked this channel yesterday, woop woop!
1 thought re your microwave--I really think if you'll paint or wrap the sides in white laminate, the microwave will not appear as large and obtrusive. At least w/rolled, self-adhesive laminate, you can easily remove if it doesn't give the desired effect (but I really, really think it will work surpisingly well for vey little time & money).
12:05 Damn, that wall looks stunning but subtle.
Yay, your back
Been watching your videos on this project. I love it man!
I'm a site super and always manage super high end jobs but it's always the same thing. This is something unique, different, and actually inspires me to try something out personally!
Really awesome project!
My dear master.
Great job.
How much is this design with furniture
Thank you for your efforts.
Great fit out.
black granite for the bench top - always black granite.
If you stain white, just dump a load of blech on to it.
amazing job bro, well done! looking forward to the next chapter!
Looks absolutely great! I rent in a not tiny house, and I wish my kitchen was even half as well made as your shipping container kitchen!
jammed up job. real nice work
Hey Ben! Thanks for the insights. Love this build. In regards to the microwave... Do you think applying a white vinyl skin would make it look less intrusive on the space?
Fantastic!
Switch the hinge on microwave door so it ergonomically opens from left to right?
Okay ... This is cool. 👍🏾😎 You are bugging on the microwave. It's fine. 🤣.
Excelente lo que hacen felicitaciones !
Amazing job.
Yes! I knew something good would come out of COVID!
@12:15. Do you regret not swapping the pullout drawer with the swing out? Seems the swingouts should be on the left and open to the left. That way the door doesn't block your line of sight to the shelf
Wow men... what a great job!!!!! congratulations to the spectacular crew
Is the stove an inch higher than the counters intentionally or did something go wrong?
Ikea good design
Have you considered a sun-shade type of material (or other method) to partially shade the roofs of the containers and allow air flow? I have always thought this would dramatically improve temperature consistency inside these kinds of homes.
Awsome information tks for sharing
I love the kitchen hope can I copy all this in my house 🏠
epic. thanks for sharing. great work
Excellent! Where's the link to the Home Depot shoot?
Towards the end of the video you had a hanging oval shaped chair that also looked home made. My wife loved it. Is that a DIY chair that you'd do a video on?
Very nice just way to small! Plus we NEED A GARAGE‼
Is there an episode 6? These videos are awesome. Great information.
Fantastic video, as always Ben. Keep up the great work. I have started my container home build. I wouldn't mind some feedback.
Looking forward to the next installment. Jim
Wow, what a project. Can't wait to see how it turns out. Best of luck, I love Kefalonia.
@@johncasey6737 Thanks John, it is very exciting project that we have been researching for over 5 years. We found a great plot & decided to go for it.
Amazing 👌👍
really nice work
I love you!
Aaaaye, Collab with ijesup
You could install the cabinets yourself. It isn’t that much work. I don’t like open shelves in kitchens since it’s easy for glass or ceramic to slip off and crash. Better to use cabinets with glass doors.
How about exhaust above the cooking range?
Good
i don't understand why when removing sections for windows and doors. why those removed were not framed into a sliding barn door that could be closed and locked in place to secure the glass. from animals of all kinds.
Great idea!
Would have been nice if all the grain at the shelf matched
I had a feeling tha you're going to upload today!
These videos confirm everything I've ever seen in movies. Mexicans keep the US running.
Hey Ben! Great Job on the Container house, question? how did you insulated the roof? i know that probably you did insulated from the inside. But how did you protected from water and sun damage? Therefore I don't know if you have any R values that you can share from the result from the different spaces... Thanks Man! Keep up the good work
I have seen Mobil homes connected end to end and end to sides, have you ever thought of doing that?
12:38 You have installed the socket directly above stove !?
Where is the follow up on your sister's house revamp which you advertised on her behalf???
10:43 - Makerbrand? That's basically the perfect way of saying "I'm not a pro, not even close, I barely know what I'm doing" ^^ Good on ya for your honesty though ;)
I would like to see how HVAC was done. Looks like minisplits on each container yeah?
is the metal exterior suitable for very hot climates if insulated inside and covered with a good roof ?
Could you provide a cost breakdown? How much for the counters and cabinets? What kind of flooring? How much per sq ft?
woww
I'm rather surprised that you wasted the foot of space at the top of the pantry. With such a small place, that quite a chunk of lost storage. Also, there are no links to the home depot photo shoot. Great work overall!
I think it would be interesting to include the prices. Thanks
Is there any way you could make a plan with a 40ft container on the bottom with a 20ft container stacked on top? Im really interested in building this but am just not sure how to make a plan for that.
id love to live in a container but mine would be extremly simple. also theres less build laws in sweden since people dont really live in containers here
Will mounting the microwave using the track system hold up during an earthquake?
do you have plans to turn the space between all the containers into an enclosed courtyard?
