3 x 20ft Shipping Containers Turn Into Amazing Compact Home

- Опубликовано: 31 янв 2019
- I’m always amazed at how people can turn shipping containers, hard, cold metal boxes, into some of the most beautiful, warm and welcoming homes. That’s exactly what this young couple from Victoria have done, transforming 3 20ft shipping containers into a wonderful, functional house.

Everywhere you look, Richard and Amy have packed their container home with great small space design ideas, ensuring that within the small footprint of the shipping containers, there is a tremendous amount of home and living space. Just as much thought has been put into the build of the home, with some great choices in materials and construction techniques making this a high performing and well insulating container home.

This home utilises a grid tied solar system, taking advantage of the extreme Australian sun. It also collects all it’s own water. With another family member on the way, this is sure to be a wonderful home for this young family. I hope you enjoy this video tour!

"when you think of shipping container last thing you would think of is house" well that would have been true a week ago until I started watching these now thats all I think about
Right me to
fax
All I think about is starting to become an under statement.... Hahaha now am only thinking about that's all I want
All I want
I have seen these houses in my place,,,like but not three containers but just one...and the people who live in it are sorta poor people,,,hey but its a roof over the head,,,its home for them...whether its small or not
I just found out about this series during the covid19 quarantine and I'm binge watching the hell out of it!!
Me too 😂 Greetings from Germany :)
Me too😂😂 I mean I discovered this channel years ago but I am now obsessed ahahah
Me too. I am also obsessed.
Same💞💞💞💞
Hi friends 🥰🌈🌈, from south of Italy. Please checkout my humble funny magic mystical Channel
I saw this a couple months ago probably five
It would be so interesting to see an update now! My absolute favorite tiny home on this channel. Even years later!
Update...he still needs permission to go to the toilet haha
she had a second child so him and two kids are sstill breast feeding hahaha
I absolutely love the idea of getting together with family, combining funds, buying some land, and building individual container homes like our own little village or something. Especially now with everything that has happened this year with Covid etc, being in our own little family village would have made quarantining all the more tolerable. *drafts proposal to present at next family gathering*
Great idea! Your own little community
Brilliant idea and you made me laugh
Brilliant! My mother & god-brother have been talking about buying land and I thought "Nope, too close!" but covid has made me reevaluate- and shipping container living makes it a lot more affordable and realistic. I agree w/ you Fiercely, and you're young so starting now will save you a lot of money for your future. Good luck convincing the family!
+ Self sufficient lifestyle.
Unfortunately you have to get such an idea past council and mostly they will say NO. Backward thinking dinosaurs they are.
The black and wood outside looks stunning! Absolutely stunning!
Oof I those it’s was navy blue...either way it’s lovely
Freedom Strider I thought you said that your black....
White would be much better, reflecting the sun and not storing the heat
it will heat it up in summer time like an oven!
This is my favorite shipping container makeover! It's amazing. The design is well thought out. It doesn't even feel tiny.
It's a good sized home. They have done a great job with the layout to really make it work.
mine too! i love their style
Yes. Someday I want to live a shipping container too.
Having smaller spaces combined into one compound does the trick. Having things compartmentalized is the way to go. This would be the method I'd do. Also having the land available is the biggest obstacle.
Chuck Finley ... yeah- as time goes on, the architecture is getting really fine tuned - especially when every square inch is considered and laboured over. As always - the devils in the detail !!
This is one of the most comfortable-looking "tiny" homes I've ever seen! I love the idea of the modular idea with the containters, just adding more containers to expand for different things. You can even go more floors above which could be awesome!
I live on a 37 foot 80s boat. It’s absolutely BEAUTIFUL and the small space is really all you need. My husband is a marine mechanic so it runs great and we take it out a lot but if that’s not your forte, a house boat would be just as cool. It wasn’t too expensive, slip rent is minimal and we have an absolutely STUNNING view from every window (hatch and porthole!) of the Chesapeake Bay. Tiny living is truly the way to go in order to live LARGE for less.
I really like the staggered shipping containers and the oversized roof for solar panels.
It definitely helps with a big problem w these, curb appeal. It takes creative mind to give them curb appeal & that worked really well- have made mental note. Idea for others, haven't tried this yet but pretty sure I can rig up bracket with moulding to essentially use solar panels as the roof - I'd have made the entire top solar panels, they have some stiffness to them and a light bracing system with rubber moulding that goes up inbetween two panels & rests on top of the entire seem, like pushing a point between a narrow gap, once it breaks through the point expands locking it down holding one span of panels together. Not safe enough (probably) for real roof but I'd do something like this guy but those three roof would be panels all hooked and almost looking like one frame of panels bolted together. You could add slanted roof, or do what he did and experiment with placement for effect.
Also shipping containers gets really hot, even with proper isolation if the sun hits directly. So the floating roof is good for keeping it warmer, and also reduce the sound that strong rain or hailing can make. The negative point is that is going to shake a lot with strong winds.
I want a tiny house so bad! Or a regular size house... or any house... I think I just want any house 😝
Me too.
Yes indeed. I come into agreement. We are both going to be blessed with our own houses this year. Amen.
@@sagemathew9740 what about me?
Amen my friend. Praying for this blessing for both of us.
I can build you a dog house at a very reasonable rate.
That’s a very nice house! I’m an amateur designer in Italy and I love to remake small houses. A small “design” hint for you... If you place the drawers under the bed to make them become steps it would be much more convenient to get on and off the bed and you’ll never use that small ladder again ;)
I’m no designer but I completely agree 👌
Agree, I was disappointed about the absence of steppy drawers 🙂
That's exactly what I thought when I saw the Drawers under the bed.
Brilliant!
I’ve noticed a trend with these videos. Almost everyone of them lives on “their parents land”.
finally someone mention it
When you wanna be independent but don’t wanna leave home XD
indeed buying the land would have made the price skyrocket.
Yeah that helps a lot
Yeah it's too expensive for most Millennials to buy land in the West now :( So lucky if ones parents have land... Kinda the only way nowadays.
This is one of my favourite tiny homes I've ever seen. It's such an interesting layout inside, with adequate space for storage and the ability to expand. It seems so practical and with a view towards the future. I would love to live in a creatively designed space such as this.
Definitely. I like the idea of the additional shipping containers over to the side to allow for even more storage and a garage for a lawn mower and garden stuff. Very very nice set-up. Did you notice his bookshelf? "Cabin Porn". Heh heh.
@@cordhosenbeck1261 I think a place that has space for expansion and extra storage makes so much more sense, for families and for couples who eventually want a family. I think it's easier to add on then start over every time. I didn't but I went back and looked. That is a book I'd like to read.
Completely agree. It's not for everyone, obviously. But, as one alternative to living, it's very attractive. Nicely done.@@rezmuttable8605
Is it dangerous to have a glass window? They are in the middle of nowhere if something happen to them no one will ever notice it.
@@aaronbueno1653 why would it be dangerous to have a window? And her parents live on the bordering 5 acres, so not in the middle of nowhere.
Beautiful home doesn’t have the look of tiny. Love the way they utilized air filtering through to avoid having air conditioning. The same way the older homes were built in the Florida Keys USA before the days of air conditioning wish builders still built this way for a greener and healthier home.
I want to make more friends, you can contact me WeChat: lzemon
With containers this big, I can totally see myself living in a similar home with a friend!
The middle container could be the common place with the kitchen and the bathroom and we could choose a container each as our bedroom / lounge area. With the laundry tucked away in the bathroom, maybe we could keep both the storage spaces in the hallways as our wardrobes! Definitely would make us happy to live together but would also provide with our own personal space! totally in love with this home :)
I am from India and I am constantly looking at all those Tiny House videos you posted... One of my Teammates mentioned that he was building a Tiny House by himself in Brisbane area somewhere and when he shared the photos it was so awesome that I hope someday in India I will also do something like this one day.... Thanks for sharing such awesome stories and thanks to all of the Tiny house owners for sharing their creative ideas....
I'm a huge fan of shipping containers and all the possibilities they contain when it comes to transforming them into incredible homes. This one is without a doubt one of the nicest we have visited so far! There are so many great design ideas in this home. I hope you enjoy the tour and thanks for watching!
The design of this home has so many possibilities for an expanding family. Simply taking on a 40ft as the third container would have provided them with an additional room with possibly a jack and jill style bathroom in between the two. Did they go with a specific architect/engineer/contractor or self done for the design process? I would love to see the schematics for this design. I absolutely geek out to floor plans, electrical and plumbing to fully appreciate its efficiency.
Living Big In A Tiny House This reminded me of the container home episode of Grand Designs Australia. You guys do awesome videos - so inspirational. Thanks.
Living Big In A Tiny House wow this is another awesome tiny house
Living Big In A Tiny House Those full depth drawers under the bed are fantastic.
Next tiny house u visit go the Luke Thill tiny house its tiny as $€£¥
Parents with land always seems to be the key
In fact it is a major recurrence/flaw of this videos. Most of them show situations in which the land is "borrowed". I mean, people do not own the area. They are not homeless due to some generous arrangement with parents/acquaintances. Plus it solves a lot in initial investment/location/facilities.
Amen
@Rab Feenie Exactly
I will have to work decades to afford both house and half the land. Oh well.
Just the way they present these videos make it seem achievable until they "oh by the way my parents own 10 acres of land..." If I' being honest I would not want to live on parents land, I have just bought a house and am proud that I did it without anyones help, makes it seem so much more of a richer experience.
I don't know why these tiny houses always inspire me in a different way. Love tiny houses
This is one of the best shipping container homes I've seen. And with respect to all tiny home living -- I find it notable that so many of the BEST jobs start with "...we're on our family's land." If you're lucky enough to already have or be given space on the real estate, all the funding and effort is put into the home itself and it makes so much difference.
Yes, own land or family land is the first important prerequisite for building a cheap house according to your ideas.
If someone had one of these, in the middle of a forest, and there was a forest fire, good luck!
i love everything except the couch ... that could be cozier along the back!
As someone with a bad back, it makes me cringe. No back support unless you scoot all the way back with your legs straight out in front of you.
So true! The couch needs a back... and those silly little stools ??? They need some real office/desk chairs with a back and lumbar support... I also would never put my bed up so high...lol.. but the overall layout is great.. and the fact that they can add a fourth container for their 1 or 2 kids to share...
Love the size of this home... so much better than a typical tiny house... they have room for real storage and closets...
I wish people would use real furniture..lol.,

Truly the best design i have seen using shipping containers. The off setting and connecting spaces are without a doubt inspired. Bravo!!
Thanks Malcolm. Glad you liked this one!
Agree 100%...This is best I've seen yet!
Offsetting and joining the containers at angles create unique spaces. 40ft with a 20ft offset by 54° for example.

Keep doing what you’re doing, man. Keep inspiring us!
Bryce has such a pleasing demeanour & a great host. Really love watching all these tiny houses. and every episodes in general.
I have mentally pictured making a small home using shipping containers. I like the idea of segmented spaces.
My original idea was forming 3-4 units in a diamond pattern with a central outdoor space.
I like how this couple have designed their home. It gives me a couple of ideas to think about.
I might just have to fire up the laptop and do some CAD work.
Have to admit it's one of the best container houses I've ever seen! Their solutions are super practical yet stylish, without the 'trying hard to be cool' feel to them.
Now this is what I’m talking about , there’s actually space
Glad you like it!

My wife and I built a 24 x 24 home with 12 x 24 covered porch by the beach in the pacific northwest it has plywood walls as well we love the feel and color. Our floors are acid stained concrete. It is super insulated and our power bill is only $30 a month. We chose cedar shake siding as it blends well with our maritime coastal environment. We paid cash and built it ourselves so no mortgage payments.
that's the way to do it! it sounds cozy and fun.

I like how they have the option to just put more shipping containers on to expand. Also, it's beautiful and a good size for the two of them. I think if they have two kids total they will have to add another container or two. I love how they also have the patio and garden. Lucky they can be on parents property.
I love what you have made the inside walls off, you walk in and it feels very warming, welcoming and homely. The whole home is great. Well done

Yes it is
Totally agree. And it is executed perfectly. Cladding and insulating the outside walls is the way to go. They won’t get condensation forming inside of the metal, so no mold later. Also it doesn’t shrink the interior space as much. I’m stealing some aspects of their design. Very inspiring.
Disagree. Beautiful land. Boring house. They brought a boring city apartment into the woods.

This has inspired you? Can you imagine living in a metal box in a winter like we're having now? This isn't simply impractical, it's backwards and rather stupid. There are modern building materials, heating and plumping systems that make a shipping container conversion absurd. In the cold, you would be in a meat locker, in the summer it would be an oven. Condensation would ruin any measures you would install to change this. If you wanted a tiny house, why would it have to be made of quarter gauge steal? Those advocating the "tiny house" alternative has never lived in one.
@SURREY CROSSING - Yes, it's one of the reasons why they're considering another extension but they feel they're okay as it is for now. The house will just grow as their needs grow...
@SURREY CROSSING
The baby's room is the one with the toxic pesticides in the wooden floor..... oh wait, that's all of them.

Hipster with nothing else to do all day.
I've always thought shipping container homes were a bit tacky, but the way that put all that cladding on theirs really made it look very nice.
Yeah, with the cladding you almost wouldn't know that it's a shipping container.

Fire resistant and earthquake proof... can't beat it.
Yup! After the earthquakes in Christchurch, lots of people started looking at container homes as a great option for that reason.

Love the desk space here, which is a must for me as an academic. This is one of the rare houses, tiny or big, that have a workable office space. This has got to be one of my favorites house for sure.
one of the things I've noticed about the tiny home trend is that everyone always says "This is my parents property".
Stephen Mitchell it’s not uncommon for families with large properties to share land with their children.
In a lot of areas it’s necessity. Hard to get permits to build tiny homes on property but you can put temporary structures on land with existing homes.
A A since young people have taken to indiscriminately referring to anyone older than they are as “Boomers”, should we call all of you “toddlers”?
@@westmcgee9320 I mean my parents are "boomers" and they're pretty awesome people. I would just own it man. There are a lot of cool boomers out there. You could call us toddlers or millennials or whichever but all of these terms are just marketing brackets invented by consumer industries and media corporations in order to sell us products and ideas. It doesn't REALLY matter. I wouldn't get too hung up on it.
Stephen Mitchell there’s some validity there but it all falls apart when you remember that words matter to everybody but robots and Vulcans.

@Blasian Babies that's a pretty ignorant statement, man smh its the practicality for some people. Personal preference
@Blasian Babies maybe you misunderstood, I have no desire to live in a shipping container. I meant that when I hear 'shipping container' I immediately think 'someone building a house with it' . Not 'i want to live in one'
Obviously if you have enough shipping containers one can make ones abode as big as one wants. Having said that, for a shipping container house this one looks quite nice.
There is the same craze about 'tiny houses'. Sure you can get/build one cheap and that might be ones choice, but I'd rather have a big house
This can be my dream container home with some changes especially in the bedroom. They can definitely remodel it to add extra containers on top for their kids.
Thank you for keeping us informed. May god bless you
This was one of my favorites (watching for a second time today). I really want you to go back and see how it is now with a baby. I think people under estimate just how much a child takes over your life from how you were use to it, but I also think people over estimate what you actually need when raising a child (it's really not as much as you think). So it would be really interesting to see how so of these homeowners are doing now that they have children in their small spaces.
I agree - I personally found the design quite pleasing (not everyone’s taste I realise) and thought the layout was generally a practical, user friendly one. The only part I wasn’t keen on was the bedroom- the bed is impractical and I wouldn’t like not being able to close the area off, more of an issue once their child arrives.
@@D-me-dream-smp I wished they would show a birds eye view of the place. I'm betting they added another 20-ft container at the end for a second bathroom & childrens bedroom/play area. I think that would work until they have a second child or the one gets older as adults will want their bedroom NOT wave to be walked through to get to the living room by other members of the household. Perhaps if the next container they add becomes their bedroom with a second bath & their current room becomes the kids area that would work for a longer time.
It's odd seeing so many salty comments on here. It's amazing that people can't simply be happy that someone else has created something so functional and cool.
It just scares me a little the thought of her being PREGNANT have having to climb a ladder to get to the bed. He has to sleep on the outside because there's a risk of her falling out if she lays on the outside and that is not a short fall.
@@TanealyaKimBeauty How many women fall out of beds? LOL Honestly.
just pointing out the hypocrisy of their idea that's all. Free land is not something that others have, also, the fact they didn't consider a baby and have NO space is pretty stupid, and lacks planning. Plus her comment about "we can live everyday on Holdiay" pretty much invited comments because of the FREE land, and the "slacker" life they want because everything was handed to them.
People shouldn't live in tiny pods. Not normal. This is class warfare. Keep raising the cost of living to force the serfs to their pods where they can eat bugs and die at their wage cage.
Some people are very short-sighted... they just don't know the rest of the story. ;-)
Love the house, colors, deco, layout just everything. The outdoors are beautiful. I think its quite spacious for a tiny home.
Amazing how beautiful that home is and how it can be expanded along the way!!
I would love to see a return to this house 1 year later to see just how far away from their plans the home is then, nothing like a baby to completely screw with a couple's view on how it will all go.
Our first home was a small one bedroom house with an external shed for storage and enclosed yard/garden area. Perfect for the two of us. Then approaching our fifth year of marriage baby number one came along. Still was fine. Then 21 months later...baby #2. Time to move. As long as the couple in the tiny home expand before baby #1 needs his/her own room they can make this work. Hopefully they aren't surprised with triplets :p

Fascinating !
I noticed that very few of alternative home dwellers own their own property.
Many times it is on family or friends' property.
Yes of course. The land in these areas is incredibly expensive which is why many who are going down this path either start up on family land, or renting somewhere. But, this model does allow for people to own their own home and then save up for land of their own some day if that's what they choose.
this is how generational wealth is created - by helping your kids. the mythology that you are not a full participant/"productive member if society" if you "rely" on your parents is perpetuated by capitalists who stand to profit off of you. food for thought.
Thought the exact same thing mate, hmm.. Kinda deflates the whole concept etc. Good luck to em and all though, just not every tom, dick and harry have land they can bum off relatives.
Dalton Bedore Very true and this is a conversation that I have a lot; however, I believe the comment was more about witnessing the journey of someone without “free” land .
I could be wrong and that’s totally fine but, I’ve notice that too.
Most of the stories speak on living debt free but, since I’ve been binging this channel (and I LOVE it) I haven’t found a story that had to start from scratch yet.
I’m still on the hunt!
I was under the impression they might own their land or maybe paying off her parents because she said her parents have 5 acres and they have 5 acres, which had been subdivided off her parents land
It looks so big and spacious on the inside. Light colors really make small spaces feel big.
Extra kudos on the use of solar panels and the water tanks!
WOW that bathroom is amazing! What a wonderful and smart home! Plus, they seem like such nice people, wishing them both and their soon to be born child all the luck!!! : D
That bathroom though! Wonderful!!!!
Still the best Tiny House channel around, thanks for all the videos. : )
Cheers John. They are a lovely couple! We really enjoyed getting to know them a bit.
Yes the shipping containers. FINALLY. THANKS BRYCE👍
And more to come too! We've found some great new container homes in New Zealand which we will be filming shortly.
@@livingbig can I see it know.
Jamaica
Loving the use of the tea cup🤦🏻♀️
i love the attention to air quality because it's so important. also beautiful ceramics!!
It certainly helps when your parents have a plot of land you can park your tiny home on instead of having to purchase a plot of land which adds to the overall cost.
Best design I've seen for shipping containers home
After watching your channel for a while now, and loving the tiny house movement, I will never look at a shipping container the same!! They are all potential homes. 🙂
I'm intrigued by the small house concept. This is one of the best I've seen so far.
Would be cool to have 4 forming a square to create an atrium in the middle
I thought the same thing. I liked it from the outside more than the inside.
Thanks ... that's awesome idea actually
What about flooding?
@@AJ-ox8xy Atrium to a fishbowl, I like it. What a multipurpose space.
ORION The Misc of The Internet you sir have won the internet today
It’s a cute little home for two people, but I think they’re in for a surprise as to how much space a baby needs.
Just add another container.
I think they mentioned how easy a fourth or even fifth container would fit well into their scheme of things.
Yes your rite not enough room for a baby
Jan Ridout especially when the child gets older but if they change things around or add space they should be fine
The wood-burning stove will become a huge burn hazard for a small child.
these kind of projects are really mind openers and lot of learning from creative minds - very nice planning and very nice space arrangements, specially seeing lot of storage is real amazing
I've watched every episode and this one is still my favorite
I had never seen a cozy home so well planned and built out of something difficult is really impressive
Can you do an update when they add a new container??
I love the wood interior and appliances, along with all the ‘green’ features.
Amazingly built
Man I love this tiny house trend it’s so amazing. All the houses look so cool and have so much character, and they manage to only use the necessities. It’s incredible, they’re also using less energy and making less waste and in this time that’s so important.
I’d love to see a follow-up when their baby is 6-12 months. 😉
That fireplace makes me nervous . This home is 100% not baby friendly. I don't think they realize how much crap babies need. There's no crib, no gates, no baby items at all and she looks a good 7 months pregnant. First time hippie parents are cute. I've raised 4 babies and I can safely say that these people have no clue what a toddler can actually get in to. I'd never have a freestanding fireplace in a room that small with a baby toddling around. There's also no tub so idk where they plan on bathing the child because that sink is to small. Yes I'm ranting about hipsters who don't realize that a baby is going to tear apart their books and climb on drawers.
Yep. My thoughts exactly. Except i would say in 24-30 months when they have a toddler terrorizing the place. It is amazing how a house shrinks when kids are around!
@@alanedark1538 I seriously just hope this child doesn't get hurt. All I can see is the decorative plant vines and ceramics everywhere and easily accessible liquor and cleaning supplies.
@@zoebedford3318 I'm curious how she's planning on climbing up and down that ladder 2 days after giving birth for the every 2-3 hour newborn feedings.
Thats what i was thinking. There is no room around the fire place to put gates up. No bath only a shower. But also, no doors between any of those rooms. Thats ok with only adults who know to be quiet, but when kids are crying in the night or your trying to work ( the study in the middle of the house for example), its not going to work.
I like the interior design. Since the video was made 2 yrs ago, the baby is one yr and 6 mos maybe. Lucky baby.
Out of all the tiny home I've seen. This one is my favorite by far.
