This might just be one of the most lore-friendly mods I've ever seen for Fallout 4. It just fits so perfectly, it really is what the laser musket should've been. I might wait a bit for the initial bugs to get worked out, but I can easily see this becoming a permanent part of my load order.
IMO the laser musket would have been fine as what it is if it didn't take ammo. Hand powered laser-gun seems like a very good survival option, no need to find any ammo, just wind it up and let loose. Too bad it needs a complex quest to make that even remotely possible.
@@kauske Now that's a thought. An infinite ammo gun is definitely in need of balancing - the Musket is already relatively niche use, having a long wind up and (comparatively to other sniper weapons) poor damage. To balance infinite ammo, I'd say slow down the cranking, double the crank amount of each capacitor, but up the damage. That way, it becomes a sniper with a looong cooldown. Additionally, some more barrels would be neat. Maybe a weak flamer barrel that allows you to quickly turn the crank to release bursts of fire that stagger and ignite enemies, but root you to the spot? Or an automatic barrel that has you build up charge for up to a minute or so, and then release it in a scattering stream of laser bolts. Maybe something that has you crank very slowly, causing a continuous beam that's both silent and almost invisible, and deals fire damage as you hold it over an enemy?
@@JRexRegis I'd say the easiest balance would probably be weapon durability, if the game had repair mechanics still. That or scale the damage to make it a useful fallback for survival, no extra ammo weight, but lower DPS. Ideally you could also crank it up and put it away ready to pull out for a full charge blast. When you first get the laser musket, the game sorta tricks you that first time, you're so caught up in it all you don't realize you get a stack of MF cells. I thought it was powered by cranking until I first went to modify it and saw the ammo type. My disappointment was immeasurable. I had assumed it was like the air/EM weapons in Metro 2033 (etc), or if you want a more silly example, the wind-up laser in Futurama. It's a good deception, but an unwelcome one. I'm going to guess the laser musket doesn't work off the crank because it was too hard to get it to work behind the scenes. Even the best crank-powered laser musket mods are a bit jankey, particularly with NPCs.
yeah, this makeshift laser is a good example of survivalist ingenuity and could have been the early to mid game version of laser guns with the laser musket being a self reloading sort of weapon with the wind up or amount of cranks for the either charged up shot or the multiple cranks for a automatic variant.
Well, the Laser Musket was designed specifically to represent older muskets and feature a similar type of design. With the Minuteman representative of the original Militia back during the revolutionary war, the laser musket is fine the way it is.
The makeshift laser rifle just screens at me that it looks like it’s made from parts from Home Depot and RadioShack. There can never be enough homebrewed energy weapons.
I'll pass! I initially thought COOL, but then realized it's STUPIDLY balanced. First off, even in its most basic variant, the Zap Gun is better than their professionally made counterparts. An OP weapon just trying to pass as "handmade". Secondly, assuming Dak did his job right testing best vs best variants, full-auto is horribly weak compared to semi-auto. SA = kill in 5 sec using 12 shots. FA = in 7 sec using 36! At point-blank range where the bad accuracy of the automatic is negated, the SA shouldn't even get close to touching the DPS of FA, let alone easily beat it in all regards. Thirdly, the OP rapid-fire grenade launcher with KD. Didn't even look right ignoring any balance issues. Seems to me, the zap gun is tryharding way too much to be your one stop shop for all your needs level 3-300. Unless you're an commando/automatic expert apparently.
I definitely like this one. It makes sense for there to be more handmade energy weapons in the wasteland than just the laser musket. I have Nina’s pipe gun replacer I discovered from one of your vids and this will go with it perfectly
I definitely need to get this mod, kind of reminds me of the Laser Revolver style weapon that Jake uses in SS2. Now, as long as this will work alongside the Wattz laser gun replacer so that I would only see that on say the Brotherhood and The Institute while these are used by everyone else, that would be fantastic.
Sold! This makes so much sense: If they have makeshift ballistic weapons, AND the laser musket; a makeshift laser gun: Why not other makeshift energy-based weapons?!
Thanks a lot for the review! I'm glad you had fun with it and the unique variant. Great in-depth showcase! And thank you to all the kind comments below. :) A response to some of the comments below: The ammo capacity will be slightly improved in the next update, the improved magazine had an issue and didn't actually improve ammo capacity. Also, the fusion core magazine has a damage penalty (otherwise it would be pretty OP) but I find that it is very viable in full auto (flamer and machine-gun versions), so you can basically spray and pray without reloading.
The textures on the automatic barrel are pink and won't animate like the others do. But still one of the awesomest mods to come out lately, that fusion flamer is something else man. Real next level stuff!
In the future if you make another mod similar to this or expand this one, consider adding a glass or glazed ceramic insulator as a handguard or forward grip, those things would be littering the wasteland just as they litter the real world, you could also add a marx generator which is a pulsed high voltage power supply fed from low voltage which can be as simple as a bunch of alternating layers of kitchen foil and paper plates or foil and trash bags rolled up to form the capacitors and a bunch of pairs of nails hammered into a cork or woode board wired together with a spark gap in between each pair. They're super simple to make in real life so they'd be perfect for this, you can accompany the firing sound with the snap of a momentary high voltage discharge/arc.
fantastic showcase of this weapon, i recently got this mod and the flamer with the fusion core has replaced any and all default flamers, it also becomes a hand held laser gatlin when given the fusion core ammo and auto barrel... i have had a fantastic time with this gun and its one of those guns that feels like it fits the lore and the post apocalyptic feel perfectly
This is an outstanding mod, it has a permanent place in my load order. One odd thing I noticed though, not sure if it's just my game or a game engine "thing"... but I gave one of the antimatter sniper rifles to Nick and he was racking off shots like it was full-auto and absolutely melting everything he went after.
huh, maybe we got pipe guns and laser muskets only because any more types would cause people to scream "Metro ripoff, lulz. Bethesda dum" sort of reaction to them?
when makeshift stuff is pipe gun level, no one is. However, if it is on the level of the Crude Blowback, the Makeshift Anti tank rifle and this Zap gun, everyone is a fan.
This is awesome. Future fallout games should try to add more variations of guns within their class. It’s always been odd to me that there are no makeshift laser/plasma guns in fallout when in previous games we had the laser RCW, Tesla cannon, etc.
It's mainly because by the time of Fallout 2 the wasteland learned how to manufacture weapons, and because the devs added what they thought was cool (can't say much for Fallout 3 though).
@@peppermillers8361 well, these modern fallouts also had the gigabyte limit of the consoles for a factor(as a example, New Vegas City would have been bigger that what we got) so on modern hardware a remake with more options would work.
