I think I saw in some other documentary that the only reason he wasn't charged for CP possession more drastically is because the stuff he had in possession was basically vintage 90's stuff, from a time where it wasn't a big issue *shrugs*
Yeah, no. The manga isn't the problem unless he exhibited his fetishes through it. Good art doesn't suddenly become bad because we find out its creator is. Did the themes suddenly change because we found out he's a criminal? Has CP suddenly begun to appear in the work? Nope and nope. Now, that said, the problem is Japan's laws and Shueisha's company policies. Japan is notoriously lax when it comes to dealing with sexual issues relating to minors. Moreover, I'm sure he has his own family to feed as well. His family are innocent in the matter (as far as we know), so it's not fair to punish them. I don't buy that "guilt by association" crap. So what's the solution? Well, ideally, what should happen, imo, is that he forfeit his copyright of the work to Shueisha and portions of the profits made thereafter go toward his family and the victim respectively.
Never said the manga is the problem, just pointed out that in this case specifically people should try to pirate since financially supporting him is giving him the ability to commit the crime much more easily
@@kuickys Frankly, he had possession, which is a far cry from actual molestation of a minor so I'm not sure where you came up with 'IDK why one got a lighter sentence than the other', but even if he did have possession and got busted afterwards, I'd be willing to give this person a chance to turn himself around simply because fetishes are just that - fetishes. He never acted on any of it. I'd not give the same treatment to someone who's already directly harmed one already - that one did act on it and committed a much graver crime.
Great video, One thing I want to mention is that most mangakas don't gain royalties from their anime adaptation. They usually get paid a license fee at the very start for the use of their property. But of course, if a good adaptation leads to better sales of the manga volumes then the mangaka will certainly reap the benefits of that. Watsuki only got off because he is a shonen jump alumni. He made an incredibly popular series that made a lot of money throughout. This most likely explains why act age despite also being popular got nuked. The author there wasn't well known and isn't sipping tea with the leaders that's usually how these biases work. A higher-up being friends with a CEO will be forgiven much more than some random grunt employee. I personally respect the Rurouni Kenshin story a lot and it's an amazing tale. However, i can understand anyone that doesn't want to give the series a watch/read.
first off: good video. I appreciate the time taken to research and compile the information. it's been a while since I heard about all this and was curious to see how it all worked out. The remake of the RK series certainly took me by surprise, I genuinely thought the live action films marked the end of a franchise that, frankly, belongs in the past. it's nice to hear someone's opinions on the matter that aren't far leaning to one or the other side, just a relatively objective informative video, thank u for this :) That said: He should have gone to prison, or at the very least should have been fined FAR more, and should have been banned from working in an industry that's directed at a young audience (cause lets face it, RK is still a series about a 16-17 year old girl who starts a romantic relationship with a 28 year old man, and that's not even including all the other 'young girl with older man' side relationships sprinkled all throughout the series. And it's kids who were/are reading this series just as much as adults... I should know, I was one of those kids in the early 2000s before any of the CP stuff was known.) There is no 'death of the author' here, we are not far enough removed from the situation to accept what happened happened. We are still living in a time where this person can do harm from these actions, where his work can be analyzed and his habits and interests made known and clear. This isn't a shut case, this isn't something that can be waved away in favor of new merch, this is a bad faith cash grab at the expense of those victimized by the industries HE supported with the money gained from the RK franchise.... So no, I won't be watching this remake. I've kept myself from watching the Live Action movies despite how cool they looked BECAUSE I didn't wanna support a known, registered p*do. I got nothing to say to those who choose to watch this, nothing they won't already hear from others along the way, but I stand firm on this matter, for myself.
I can’t help but associate the idea of redemption for kenshin’s past crimes with the very real crimes that watsuki did irl. You can’t say that this wasn’t a huge part of watsuki’s life. I loved the series, but also it’s like watching a cartoon based on the most infamous dictator’s paintings. Pretty pictures! Vast landscapes! Imposing architecture! True dedication to the craft. Certainly extremely significant pieces of art in a historical sense in some ways. But also like anyone who says that the dictator’s paintings are their favorite pieces of art (you know when you pretend all the atrocities never happened for a moment) is not at a great place in their life. Art exists within a context, both cultural and personal. Sometimes that context is truly horrifying. Sorry to anime fans. Try finishing that series that’s been stuck on your watchlist for the last year instead. You’ll probably have a better time.
Theres nothing wrong with feeling the way you do about it which is pretty obviously bias but my point being you gotta understand japan in the 90s is completely different now. Which is why he was able to get a "slap on the wrist" compared to the repeated offender. It wasn't till 1999 you couldn't have that smut he got caught with. Which sadly he still had till 2017. I'm not trying to cover for him but dude literally lives a country that finally raised the legal limit to have consensual *** from the age of 13 to 16 last month. Idk what to tell you but Japan handles things differently. Like touching a minor vs old smut.
I agree the way Japan handles certain topics is completely different to the western standard, but that doesn’t change the fact that regardless of actual admittance to his fetish, an unfathomable amount of cp, and no remorse for said crime he still got a sentence that is too light (especially when taking the average into account)
This had to be said. I'm surprised how many people were actually unaware of this. I'll cherish the memories I had with the series, but I definitely can't support it financially knowing what that money was used to fund.
He was made an example and for all purposes that would be a social death and stop him from gtting published. And might get that anim plans cancelled again. Also it was a new law. And i would say him beig known as the pdf files guy is in the industry nd japan, i think its harsh enough. Especially given that it heiswork, hasnt really a future anymore even if he did beloved series.
It clearly hasn't been social death for him though. His manga is still insanely popular and there's plenty of people that defend him. Him being in prison isn't just about punishing him but keeping children safe
A dude having P-stash based on his fetish of minors is not even remotely the same crime as a dude who actually have repeatedly molested minors. Hoping/wanting for both of them to receive roughly the same degree of punishment is asinine (if not crazy). It's understandable for the former (Watsuki) to receive lighter punishment than the latter.
Great video i love the show and manga but screw the guy and also usint the kanye comparison to what this dude was bad maybe use R.kelly but not kanye he did nothing wrong but have is own opinion on things
I didn’t compare him to Nobuhiro Watsuki i meant to use him as an example of separating the art and the artist (since he pretty much stated “I see good things in H*tler” and thats wild af
This is basically the same problem as Jeepers Creepers. You might love the story but hate the storyteller for what he does.
A perfect way to put it

But did he have real cp materials with live people or cartoon cp?

You’re absolutely correct that most mangakas don’t get royalties, however on the chance that Nobuhiro does I still personally recommend pirating
@@kuickys 100% agree

Yeah I've not no problem with people that enjoy it as long as they pirate it and tell others to when they recommend it
