LOVE this analysis man. Unfortunately my first viewing of this film didn’t quite resonate with me, most likely cuz of personal expectations. But after extensive research on films like this (including this essay), there’s clearly much more depth than what appears on the surface.

Ah, thank you Logan! I definitely think this movie suffered from it's marketing - I think that if most people went in blind, they would've liked it more. Trey Edward Shults is an amazing director - I'd highly suggest both Krisha and (especially) Waves. All of his movies deal with family dynamics in a sense - he's really good

Another great video m8. This film is special since it got such a bad rep among the audience since trailer sold for them different movie and also it's not your typical horror movie. I was very surprised by how impactful and masterfully crafted it was. One of the best examples why people should pay more attention to critic scores and don't take audience scores seriously.
P.S. went through your channel and noticed that subjects you choose for your videos are superb. Every video looks like curious and original study. Keep it up!

Thank you Nick! Next video is out in 20 minutes or so hahah
I always look at critic scores over audience scores! I mean, The Master (arguably Joaquin Phoenix's best performance) only got 62% audience score...insane!
And totally agree on what you mentioned about the movies marketing - they definitely gave audiences the wrong expectations going into the film. It's so visceral and ambiguous - I loved it.

Wonderful video! Just watched this movie without knowing anything about it beforehand, and i was delighted. The rest of the internet seems to have negative feelings about the movie, but your video sums up feelings that i couldn't find words for. I'm gonna check out the rest of your videos after i watch the movies they're about. Thanks for giving me a new list.

I don't know who all would believe this but two days after I watched this film on my laptop,
    Covid 19 became a thing.
And I don't know why but this film perhaps showed us the future of this disease. It forced me to revisit this film, only this time, I was worried for real.
Great video essay by the way.

I think the fears of a global pandemic have actually been around for a while - and this film captures that paranoia/the consequences exceptionally well. Scary to see how right they were in making it so "us vs them".
Thanks for the kind words :)
