I made the decision to start a very light medication for my 12 year old after years of trying everything to help her (therapy, nutrition, vitamins, sports, horse therapy)...when I enrolled her in middle school last year she hit rock bottom and we had to pull her out. She spent the whole year being home schooled and getting acclimated to her medication. I can't even begin to describe how thankful I am for that medication. It has balanced her and I finally got my girl back. She's back in school full time this year and she's ENJOYING it! I am going to share your video with her, I think she'll really be able to relate to everything you share here! Thank you!

If you have health insurance, call the number on the back of your insurance card. When I did that, they directed me to a list of therapists in my area that would take my insurance. This may help decrease some of the anxiety surrounding finding a therapist and being able to pay for it. This video is so helpful!!! For years and years I was exactly the same way about being the passenger in cars... hitting the nonexistent brake and bracing yourself against the door when you think you're going to die... It sucks.

I have anxiety and I take medication for it. I'm not ashamed to say that I have anxiety, no one should. It's a normal thing, a lot of people have it. I like that people are starting to talk about it more, helping each other. When I was starting to have anxiety and panic attacks I actually didn't know what was going on, I thought something was wrong with me. Until I saw a youtuber talking about it and talking about the symptoms, that I realize what was going on. I told my parents and we went to the doctor, who gave me an anti-depression medication. It's been about 6-7 months since I started taking it, I still get a little anxiety sometimes but it's starting to slow down. DON'T BE ASHAMED TO ASK FOR HELP!!!

Giulia Carraro i don't think it's necessarily that they're ashamed to ask for help. For me my anxiety makes it hard to ask for help or to talk about it. I'm not ashamed of having anxiety, it's just a sore subject for me, and I have a hard time talking about it. I wish it were easier for me personally to ask for help, and I'm so grateful to all the youtubers who talked about it and helped me realize what was going on.

A video that helped me describe it to my friends early on was Zoe Suggs first panic attack video. You can also search for counsellors at school or college and they WILL help you- even the nurse will help you! Also trying to describe what you feel in a way they would click with helps. Like "you see a lion and your brain has to decide for you whether to fight or flight and this increases the adrenaline BECAUSE cavemen needed this extra boost in order to run away or fight with enough power" this helped me understand my own anxiety disorder as well. My dad didn't understand at first nor did my twin brother but after explanations and them researching - we were able to reach a good point. Keep fighting!

re: the vomiting/gastro issues with anxiety: the stomach is hit hard by anxiety because anxiety (the disorder, not the feeling) is the peripheral nervous system responding incorrectly to stimulus. It's the fight or flight response, and it's ALWAYS telling us that death is imminent so that we're prepared to run away from it. The PNS shuts down "unnecessary" functions like digestion and the immune response, and turns up functions like heart rate. So people with anxiety are waaay more likely to feel sick, get sick, and stay sick.

I will have anxiety attacks over picking out shirts to wear. I'm so worried about what people will say about me, that for months on end I exclusively wore
t-shirts because I was worried if people were talking about me. Now a days I will have an anxiety attack if I wear a

I have pretty bad anxiety and depression. Once I was living with a roommate who was dealing with the same thing. Whenever she saw me start to get upset about something, she'd turn to me and say "breath. you aren't breathing." And it helped. In an odd way.
If she would say that to anyone without anxiety, she'd probably annoy them.

I went to vidcon 2013 and I saw you Cat on your own so it was the perfect opportunity to go and speak to you (which i really wanted to do) however back then my anxiety was so bad that the thought that went through my head was "no, she won't want me to bother her" in hindsight this was the stupidest thought but that's what anxiety does to your confidence. It's so nice to hear about other people's struggles, not because I'm happy you had struggles or anything like that, but because I don't feel so alone in this and I wish to god I could have a vidcon do over just so I could have the chance to talk to you in person again. I still kick myself for not going over, I was probably about 10 feet away. I'm also on zoloft and even though the stuff nearly killed me the first week, I too feel so much better and I'm so glad you do too cat! xx

I agree with medicine helping me so much. In fact today I went to class and realized I forgot to take all of my medicine and all of my symptoms came back. Some symptoms I forgot I had and now that I'm home with my medicine in my system it is honestly night and day. Personally, the medicine has helped me IMMENSELY in addition to therapy! Anyone struggling right now- talk it out with someone you trust (a parents a friend a sister a brother) and look for help and for what you need- it will get better I promise. Sometimes it has to get worse before it gets better but it always does improve- just keep fighting and pushing through!! You can do it!!! 💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙

I discovered your channel via your appearances in Dan & Phil's videos, and this is the first of your videos I've watched that didn't include them, because this issue affects my life in huge ways & it's wonderful to feel like someone understands & is speaking up about it, which can help fight stigma. I've been unable to work for the past 16 years because of the severity of my generalized anxiety disorder, and people often don't understand how "a little anxiety" can be so debilitating when they think they understand what it's like because they've felt nervous about a job interview or giving a speech or something. Severe anxiety can be crippling and can make you feel very alone, like no one understands, so thank you for making this video to help others know that they *aren't* alone, and that even successful people they admire might suffer from similar issues. There is nothing wrong with having problems or needing help!

I started taking anti-depressant/anti-anxiety medication recently too, about 2 weeks ago after a particularly nasty anxiety attack. I got prescribed it maybe 2 months ago but I was kind of terrified to start taking it because I've heard about the side effects. However, now I know that starting it was a really good decision because even in this short two weeks I've noticed a BIG difference in my daily anxiety and depression levels. I'm able to leave the house. I'm not scared to ride my bike on campus for fear of people looking at me. I'm not constantly self deprecating and thinking horrible thoughts. I'm considering starting talk therapy too. Thanks for this video Cat!
To anyone who's anxious about talking to their doctor about anxiety/depression, I KNOW it's scary. I was honestly shaking while talking to my doctor, but it was a good decision. Just do it please.

Sertralin is the generic of Zoloft! If you feel dull or emotionless you should change the dosage or the medication! Everyone reacts to the medicine differently! I know that I was started on Celexa and I felt dull and no better and was later weened off onto Zoloft(Sertralin) and have been working on the dosage for about 6 months. With the right medicine there shouldn't be side effects after 3-8 weeks! :)

Just a warning: everyone reacts differently to drugs. I was prescribed Zoloft my sophomore year in high school for my chronic depression and anxiety. I was monitored and watched bc my depression was pretty bad. Unfortunately I developed really bad tunnel vision and almost killed myself. My advice is to journal your feelings every day when you start an antidepressant, if things are going downhill you need to communicate with people in some way. Or have someone just one person who you can talk to. I hope that it works out for you cat! It probably will!!

Panic attacks I've had lasted 15-45 mins. I really like it when people talk to me so that I know I'm not alone. Even if I know I'm not alone, someone talking reassure me. Ask if you can do anything like get water or things like that. If I'm alone I call someone if I can. If not, I try to repeat numbers, but not in order (ie 1,5,3,9,6) or look around find something I can see, hear, smell, touch, taste. It helps you to think more rationally. Breathing is very important, *if you can* try to breath slowly through your nose because after a while of deep breathing you get over-oxygenated. Be supportive because you feel like you're going crazy while it's happening. Even after it, I don't want to be around people for about 3 hrs, it's traumatic.

I've dealt with anxiety for at least 21 years, and now I'm helping two of my kids deal with it. One is only 11 and we are dealing with it with no drugs for her. She throws up from her anxiety. My other spawn takes meds for their anxiety. I take them also and I'm thrilled with how well they help me. Anxiety is exhausting.

Thanks, this was a helpful video! I have struggled with anxiety a lot but it's not something my family and I ever talk about. I used to throw up every morning before school when I was scared about making friends, and that still happens when I get really anxious and I always thought that was super weird (it's happened in public too, more than once) and just today I got so anxious during a test that I almost started crying, it's nice to know I'm not alone. :)

I take medication for my anxiety and they help me so much. I go to therapy too and the combo of the two has helped. Thank you for making this video and talking about anxiety. I have OCD, Social Anxiety, and Generalized Anxiety. Anxiety isn't something they is talked about a lot, so thank you.

I'm so glad from people who talk about this kind of issues. because it was so difficult to me to accept my depression and go to a psychiatrist and take pill, go to therapy. I was so prejudiced about this. and when I start taking pill I was so much better. and my life is different now. well, my point is thanks about this video.

I know I'm super late to this but I'd like to add something to your last response about being there for someone who is having an attack:
Sometimes just a hug is all someone needs.
I say this as someone who had my first attack in early March (5-6 attacks since), so I'm by no means an "expert" at dealing with this. But(for me), the only time I ever truly felt "released" from my anxiety is when i fessed up to my older sister that I was having severe emotional trouble. She rushed to where I was working, gave me the biggest hug, and said she loved me and I broke. I bawled like a baby in her arms for what felt like an hour. I haven't had the courage to speak to any of the other people I've been around when an attack happened, but if you are having an attack:
PLEASE TELL SOMEONE! Even if it's a stranger on the street. Your own head is the most dangerous place for you to get stuck and there are so many people who will listen and try to understand if you just tell them.
Thank you Cat for making this video, there are so many more people that need to see this.

About the "how to find a therapist" question, it can be very overwhelming when googling therapists in your area and whatnot so, if someone is struggling with that, another thing you can do to get a diagnosis and get a referral is going to your primary doctor. Primary doctors aren't always helpful when it comes to mental illness, but if you explain your symptoms to them, they may offer to start you on a basic anti-depressant (if you're open to that), or if your anxiety is severe enough, stronger anti-anxiety meds, and give you a referral for a psychiatrist and therapist, maybe even multiple options. It's a good way to narrow down the pool of therapists to choose from and, if you trust your primary doctor, they can be more helpful than you would think.

Best advice I ever got for dealing with anxiety, specifically performance anxiety, was to tell the people around me that I was nervous (for example: right before a presentation or reading aloud), it never erased the anxiety completely but it always lessened it by an enormous amount. This can also be applied to general situations in which I feel anxious- if I let someone know how I'm feeling it acts as a great comfort. (Hope this helps!)

I suffer from panic attacks.. I just ask my boyfriend to lay with me and hold me while I come round. it's petrifying... I can't calm my heart or feel like I can breathe. it feels like I'm dying... so I need someone if I can't have someone I end up having a longer panic attack because I'm alone.

Even if I find it embarrassing I really do struggle and I refuse to take medication because I'm to far gone to even brave swallowing something that could make me feel worse.... it affects everyone differently.. I feel sorry for people who don't have anyone to help them. :( xx

Good video. I deal with anxiety attacks as well. For me, my adrenal glands overreact and my body temperature sky rockets to where I have to lay on the ground/tile to lower my temperature. Basically passing out if I can't. I've been on and off Zoloft as well; I hate the idea of taking a medication to function but I just recently went back on it because I just think it's necessary at this point. Thanks for sharing, it's good to know I'm not the only one who suffers.

In regards to the thing you said about throwing up and stuff like that when you get too nervous, the reason that happens is because there are also neurons in your gut and heart which is why your mental state will affect both of these things to a greater extent than most other organs.
I've dealt with depression and social anxiety for most of my adult life without drugs; but I definitely understand why some people might need it and can draw great benefit from being on them. Not dealing with anxiety can lead to heart disease later in life so it is a very important issue!
Now mind you I am no expert on the subject, however I do have first hand experience and what has helped me was getting a dog, whom I love very much! Dogs are great social animals and have an instinct for tuning in to your feelings, they will feel when you are upset or scared and often provide some much needed comfort.
Anyways, I also just wanted to say that I love these more serious videos you do Cat, I've been a fan of yours for years now and I hope you're doing well in life outside of youtube aswell! :)
Best Regards from a Danish fan of yours! :)

Almost 2 years ago, my anxiety spiked so badly I had to be hospitalized. I've struggled with anxiety since I was like 11 or 12, and I'm 23 now. When I was at my worst before going to the hospital, for a full week I could barely eat or sleep and for that entire week I would be throwing up multiple times a day even when I didn't eat. It's terrible. Anymore, the thing that triggers the most anxiety is being reminded of my time in the hospital and my recovery. Even years after, it still effects me so much. Like even just watching the video and being able to relate to so much of this.
My worst panic attack was while I was in the hospital. I was just sitting at a table and all of a s7dden I felt like I couldn't breathe. I had been dissociating the entire time I was at the hospital and I think it just got very bad. But I started hyperventilating to the point that I started to black out, couldn't see anything and my ears were ringing, if I wasn't sitting down I prob would have passed out. It was so scary I thought I was dying

I really like how you approached his topic, i'm hesitant to watch videos about anxiety or depression because I believe that many people say " I have anxiety" just experience nervousness and don't know what it's really like. I also like what you said about being self aware and there is a difference between nervous once and anxiety disorders. People exaggerate and say they have anxiety when they really don't (not saying I know everybody's life/situation). I feel like it's like the " I have OCD" thing when people say they have it but really don't or don't realize what it's actually like. I've been a typical anxious and nervous child/adult ever since I can remember and it actually effected my life so it makes me angry when people are like yeah "I probably have anxiety"and they have never been diagnosed (also not saying that everybody is the same or everybody is a liar or anything like that)

This was such a good video for me to watch, I really needed it. I don't know if I should do something about my anxiety (?) because it comes and goes a bit. I've only had one very very mild panic attack, as in all that happened was I was shaking a lot and felt like I couldn't breathe, I kinda felt like all the walls were just getting closer and closer and like I was going to be stuck in that situation and feeling that amount of fear forever, even though it was literally just over talking to some intimidating classmates when I was new at my school. Other than that I just get a general anxious feeling in the back of my mind when I'm PMSing, which I guess is also pretty normal because almost everything can be put down to bring part of pms. Maybe I'll just see if it goes away when I'm not as hormonal as I get older or something

Sometimes I really feel like talking to a professional about how I really feel everyday. I never wanted to admit to myself that it was really a problem. People around me don't understand why I don't like working because of anxiety, and think that I am just lazy. The more I stay away from people and work, the more calm I feel. I'm always feeling worried, sweaty palms, hot and cold flashes and I overthink constantly. I feel like I should really open up more, knowing my parents they might not even take me serious like if there is anything wrong with me. Eventually they will understand.

i get anxiety, i don't believe it's as bad as some other people who have anxiety tho. i don't get panic attacks, but like, in the morning before school i'll get so anxious that i'm sick to my stomach, and then when i'm at school, i'm perfectly fine. it's like anticipatory anxiety. i also don't like talking to people i don't know, i'll refuse to do it because it makes me so nervous (unless i have absolutely no choice). recently i got into a car accident and totaled my car and i had to talk to the insurance people on the phone and i was really anxious and normally if i had a choice, i would have refused to talk to them but since i didn't have a choice i just dealt with it, but i was definitely shaky and nervous while talking to them. i get nervous very easily tho even around my friends who i'm comfortable with, i think that sorta has to do with insecurity tho. im very quiet and shy, although, thankfully i somehow am able to become friends with basically anyone, i don't have many people at school that i'm not friends with, but when i'm somewhere new and i'm around people i don't know, all i can think about is how badly i don't want to be there and being in crowds of people terrifies me and idk, there are a lot of things that make me super nervous but still, i don't think it's as bad as some people. i kinda shake all throughout the day like
my hands and stuff get really shaky and if someone pays me too much attention i turn so red, even if they're my friend. i just don't feel comfortable with a lot of attention. anyway, i smoke weed lmao and that helps a lot. i used to be prescribed to an antidepressant that was meant to help my anxiety but i didn't like the side effects so i stopped taking it, plus i don't think my anxiety is bad enough to where i need to take antidepressants/anti anxiety meds. weed helps calm me down, and i know that's sortve a controversial thing but whatever, i find that it helps me and even tho i smoke, i'm still in all honors classes at school and even one college level class and i get good grades and i do all my work, so i don't let weed affect me negatively, and i don't get stoned out of my mind, i just smoke enough to calm me down a bit. idk just thought i'd share all of that lmao

I'm not a regular commenter but I just have to say, I suffer from panic attacks and I used to have at least two a day. For me the absolute worst thing someone could say to me was "it's okay" or "you're okay" because it wasn't okay. Something was causing me such anxiety, stress or sadness that it caused a physical reaction in my body and to me that wasn't "okay". I would get angry and my breathing would get worse when someone said something like that and it made everything feel much much worse. I wanted to be left alone, I told friends if they wanted to help just to get me a drink of water as drinking can help get your breathing back under control. I personally would recommend getting someone a drink and asking them what they want you to do. This will make them slow down and think. If they say they don't know, let them be alone and calm down in their own time but be near enough that if they need you, you can be there.
