For Mills Lane, who refereed the brawling, bloody middleweight title fight which preceded the Leonard-Benitez bout at Caesars Palace, the outcome was as apparent as the many cuts on Vito Antuofermo's craggy face. Moving quickly to the corner of Marvin Hagler, Mills directed the challenger to turn and face the ABC-TV cameras. "Congratulations," Mills murmured. "Now stay facing this way until they announce the decision and I raise your arm."
Across the way, little Freddie Brown, the ancient cutman, was busily anointing Antuofermo's torn features with his magic wound solution. There were six cuts; 25 stitches would be required to close four of them.
"You win it in the last round," Brown rasped, working swiftly. He didn't want Vito--a 4--1 underdog in his first title defense--to be bleeding when they told him he was still champion.
But surely the referee and the bettors were right and Brown was not.
And then they read the astonishing decision:
Judge Dalby Shirley: 144--142 for Antuofermo.
Judge Duane Ford: 145--141 for Hagler.
And Judge Hal Miller: 143--143.
A draw. And draws go to the champion.
The champion's style is neo-caveman. Pressure is his game. He simply lowers his head and charges, and once inside he rains blows with unrelenting fury. It is a style that had won the 26-year-old exsausage grinder 45 of 49 fights (with one draw) and the WBC-WBA title (from Hugo Corro) last June. The Hagler bout brought him $190,000. His opponent was paid $40,000.
While basically a lefthander, Hagler is a switcher who prefers to fight from a distance, sharp and clean. He wears people down, taking them out with clusters of crushing, crisp combinations. While winning 46 of 49 bouts (one draw) he had knocked out 38 opponents.
Against Antuofermo, an Italian-born resident of Brooklyn who usually begins to bleed halfway through the national anthem. Hagler's slashing style promised to remind people of the Little Bighorn. But only "if we can keep Vito off us," said Pat Petronelli, who with his brother Goody manages and trains Hagler. "Vito is rough and tough, a street brawler with a lot of heart whose best punch is his head. We can't go inside with him. That would be crazy."
Hagler's strategy was to circle the wagons, to stay out of the corners and off the ropes and, whenever Antuofermo got inside, to tie him up until the referee gave him a pass out of the danger zone.
Hardly had the decision been announced when Bob Arum, the Top Rank promoter, standing at ringside, shouted that there would be an immediate rematch, much to the dismay of the WBC and the WBA--and of Alan Minter, the English southpaw who had been promised the next title fight no matter who won in Las Vegas.
"The WBC will not be led by promoters," countered Jose Sulaiman, the WBC president. "We will have our convention in a week, and we will talk about it. There is no doubt Hagler deserves another chance. But after Minter."
At first, Dr. Elias Cordoba, the WBA ratings chairman and the power behind the scenes, agreed. But later, after reflection and a conference with Arum, he changed his mind and said the WBA would order an immediate rematch.
Which leaves Antuofermo as the man in the middle. He'll have to make a choice: fight Minter for the WBC or Hagler for the WBA. He'll make one group happy; the other group will strip him of its version of the title.
Through no fault of his own, Antuofermo soon will be half a world champion. That is the unkindest cut of all.

I met Hagler at Linate airport in Milan, Italy in the late 80s. We were waiting for the fog to lift and the airport to reopen. I asked him who was the toughest fighter he ever faced. He said Vito without hesitation. He said Vito was almost impossible to stop.
TRUE!
John Mugabe took alot out of hagler
@@kunglee3457 TRUE BUT MUGABI NEARLY DIED ! regards.
Hagler didn't look the same after fighting Tommy. He looked slow, beat up and worn out. Mugabi benefited as did Ray Leonard.
They made hagler fight for the tittle 5 years 😢@garybey896
Vito and Ray Leonard were the only 2 fighters that gave Hagler real trouble when he was at his peak.
John the beast
Vito Antuofermo the real Italian Stallion
Vito could take it !!! I thought he lost even back then but if he didn’t bleed so much he would have beaten Minter in the next fight
Antuofermo was a Roman gladiator
Hagler gave him a brutal beating..
Hagler won the fight clearly, how it was a draw is beyond me,the commentator was clearly massively pro Antuofermo as where the judges and the crowd, anyway Hagler got his own back big time by battering Minter for the crown and ruling the Middleweight division for years with a brutal and at times a sadistic mindset, which in my view you must have too be a champion,
The stamina on these warriors is insane
cocaina
Vito was a brawler, Marvin was a technical boxer. Both men were physically tough.
Grazie Vito, grazie campione. Rivedendo il video della tua vittoria ho ripreso coraggio e fiducia in un momento difficile della mia vita. Sei un grande!
Must respect to Marvin Hagler. One of the greatest Middleweights. RIP
Rip Hagler. The marvelous one.
Hagler was tough as hell I never seen him ever have to hold on to a fighter and that's very impressive.
Imagine this; This fight and the Headline Fight were on free broadcast television, you didn't even need cable to see them on TV.
I remember watching this fight with my friends. For free...those were the days.
Rest In Peace Marvin 🙏🏼
Marvin Hagler died today...RIP
Hagler made being in shape an art form.
Yet Hagler faded noticeably here. Vito was the better conditioned fighter here. He took the punishment the first of the fight, then came on like a freight train late. Had Hagler shook and hanging on in the 13th. GREAT FIGHT.
I'm Italian, I saw that match, Hagler won clearly, but Antuofermo was so incredible....
Vito was a one tough sob, but Hagler clearly won this fight by at least 3 points
my opinion equal fight, anyway the italian did a kind of miracle against the alien...
cosell was very biased in this fight .. !!
Nobody with a brain in their head acknowledges this fight as a draw.
It was a clear Hagler win.
Vito deserves massive respect for the warrior he is and the effort he put in here but Hagler beat him convincingly.
The full fight tells a clearer story.
It was a total rip-off. The type that turns people off regarding boxing
i don t agree, hagler dominated first half but in the last 5 rounds he was literally standing , vito fought back anf his feet were faster, considering that he was smaller he deserved.hagler was too full of himself, a lesson for his career
No it was close it doesn't take a brain just common sense
@@andy46197 I agree with you
there was something about Hagler judges didn't like...fighting back counts, but the guy who lands more and cleaner wins: that was Hagler...I've never scored the fight round by round, probably because it wasn't close. Cosell and the crowd are full of baloney. Vito had some moments, but this is a 3-6 round margin
I always liked both of these guys in and out of the ring. They fought like theirs lives depended on it. I enjoyed this fight on a Friday night in 1979 and I just did again. RIP Marvin Hagler. Continued good health Vito.
Grande Vito a combattere ad armi pari col fantastico Marvellous. Gran match!
I remember this fight.
First time I remember how crooked boxing judges are.
Hagler won this fight by at least 4 points.
Hagler won 10 rounds easily.
It was a night I'll never forget. Live on ABC, three championship bouts Friday night 30-November. This was the first fight for the middleweight crown. Second fight was in New Orleans, in the Superdome Victor Galindez vs Marvin Johnson for the light heavyweight crown (won by Johnson). Third fight was for the welterweight crown: Leonard vs Benitez. Those were the days,
Yes they were!
All Vito did was put his big head into Hagler and clinch..Hagler was 10 times the fighter than this bum..Every single exchange, he led with his head..
Era bueno Autofermo...no cualquiera cansaba y le colocaba buenos golpes a Hagler..... Buena pelea
When you think of the ref as an excited superfan who climbed into the ring to get the best view of the fight, it’s pretty funny
Hagler nearly knocks Vito's head off, Vito lands a grazing counter: 'Vito nails Hagler with a good right'.
Hagler was hurt more times in this fight than his whole career lol. The Petronellis screwed up, told Hagler he was way ahead, & he coasted too much and left it up to the judges. This bad decision would have a VERY negative impact on Alan Minter's face. It's why Hag has the highest KO% among MW champs
ECCEZIONALE VITO AUTOFERMO
Hagler fan boy, I watched the fight, it was even ad could be.
Rocky vs Apollo Creed.
Very tight fight. Recognition to Vito, but Hagler won on points.
Had no idea this dude was a boxer. Always just saw him as Joey Zaza's mean looking body guard.
Thanks for the edited, detailed post Man; what an example of the sweet science, Vito playin' off MH in the rhythm.
Magnificent. Simply magnificent.
did marvin play the racist card in the aftermath ? vito thou prob mob controlled
That 15th round, both going for it, great!
I believe they fought more than once And the Marvelous one could just not get past the tough Antifermo... I thought the decision was the correct one a draw in which the champion retains his Crown. You cannot give the champions Crown away. You've got to take it away from him. And Hagler couldn't do it convincingly.... End of story.
Vito the strongest and rough fighter in a lot of time
Vito was a very complicated fighter for any champion
Great battle and the draw is not a crazyness
Hauler battered antuofermo in both these fights but the only reason the 1st fight wasn't stopped on cuts was it was before the superglue fiasco between Matthew saad Mohammed and John Conteh which highlighted the use of a superglue substance ...Marvin never trusted the judges again after the travesty of the first fight in which he clearly won (not with the judges though)
I love Hagler to def...1 of my favorite boxing idols no doubt. Never even heard of this fight or this guys Vito's name till now. But have to say hands down Vito would have remained the Champ in my eyes. You have to beat the Champ decisively. Yo!! This Vito dude was a BEAST!!..his chin, stamina & boxing skills was SICK!! I might have to put this 1 over the Aron Pryor & Alexis Aquairo fight. My goodness, not 12 but 15 rounds of pure ferociousness coming from the Marvelous one and he's still picking up steam as the fight goes on? And these were Freebies to? Didn't know how good we had it.
El toro italiano el más rudo y fuerte de mucho tiempo... El oponente más fuerte que tuvo Marvin Hagler en toda su carrera... El mejor italiano
Vito was a freaking force of nature. Very very popular fighter. I saw it old school like you- you gotta TAKE the Champs crown. Marvin did not do it.
I had forgotten how irritating Cosell could sometimes be
my thoughts exactly, sprinkled in with a little pseudo not-so-covert racist biases... just sayin i heard what i heard, but my eyes were telling me a different story at several points through the broadcast. all due respect to the legend.
Grande Antuofermo ai vertici Mondiali!!
Tough Italian
Absolutly Hagler won the fight!
Grande Vito 💪💪💪👍👍👍
Marv won the fight, clearly but not by a wide margin. Vito clearly could take a shot, tough guy
But THEEEE dirtiest fighter that MMH had to contend with.
This fight made Marvelous a great champion. After this fight he was unstoppable. R.I.P.
Vito was such a tough guy, but he'd basically be cut before the weigh in was over. i remember reading that the his brow was kind of pointed (which is why he cut so easily) and he actually had an operation to file the bones down.
I was 10 and I knew Hagler got robbed. And I wanted Vito. Tough guy, but Hagler was a marvel.
I was a kid bored at home on a Saturday afternoon in 1979 and turned on ABCs Wide world of Sport and I run in to the fight, I started to watch because there was not much else on Tv , I didn’t know either fighter, but as the fight went on it became a really great bout, I was hooked…Vito in my eyes won by a slight margin but this is the fight where Marvin became Marvelous
A snatched win by Vito never dangerous. He had a great heart, but Hagler was already on another level..
In the late 80s 7 or 8yrs after their second fight i saw Vito in howard beach queens as i was driving I yelled out Hey vito Hagler? He just shrugged his shoulders which meant Who knows?
Vito won that fight.
Hagler struggles here autofermo brill
Great boxing, Marvin in top form here but Vito is so skilled and tough makes me want him to win.
What a wonderful warriors🔝🔝🔝
Back when fighters fought everybody & anybody
Esta pelea no fué empate ganó Antuofermo
What a fight
Almost impossible to make a video highlights of this fight.
Vito il vero Rocki Balboa
Great fight 👊..all the hoods watching in the stands.. 💯🇮🇹
Vito Antuofermo, along with Juan Roldan is one of those middleweights Hagler fought that never stop coming forward.
Although he was never a true 'great middleweight' I would have loved to seen how Roberto Duran would of matched up with those two.
Rubbish decision
Good-evening. Well done Marvin. In my eyes, you were the Champ. If, I could be, only half as good as you, I would be happy.
The Bull of Lewisham.
After watching the 15th round of this fight it became clear to me that there's no way Monzon beats Hagler, no way!!!
R.I P Marvin 🥊
I enjoyed the detailed description of your video however my recollection is Minter became the UNDISPUTED middleweight champion when Vito fought him after this fight. Hagler certainly made no mistake when he got his second chance almost a year later against Minter. Great memories! 👍
Hagler recognized Antuofermo as the toughest fighter he met in his career.
I always hated Cosell. In this fight he repeated ignored Hagler's scoring punches. He kept saying Vito was taking charge when in fact he took head snapping jabs and short uppercuts and hooks: Hagler scores two rights and a left and Vito scores a medium level punch. Cosell: "The little guy is coming on." Vito charges with his head down and falls into a wrestling mode. Cosell: "As evidenced right there!
I remember watching this and thought Marv won it easy. Cossell's commentary was abysmal.
First watching and as I'm watching I thought a draw fair.
Hagler with his Velvet "Hot pants." Any shorter a nut would be hanging out. Always makes me Lmao. Google "Women's hot pants from the 70's" if you don't know what they were.
In retrospect, Vito gave Marvelous all he could handle. Maybe His toughest opponent.
Good afternoon the persons who say you have to beat the champion deceifully know nothing about this sport .lf a boxer is only better than the other marginally he can only win marginally. Many champions have lost their titles on close split decisions. Hagler won this bout. It was close but not very close.
Hagler was a great champion. However, so tired of all the excuses when he had a bad fight. It happens!
Vito made it an art by using his head and not getting caught.
Vegas and the WBC screw over Hagler..more to come.
El mejor monzón vencía a hagler . Como lo dijo bob arum
Hagler should have won in a split decision
Saw this live on TV, and it was my first time seeing the man that would become probably my favorite boxer of all time. Marvelous won that night.
Vito
R.I.P. The Marvellous!
13:38 yo not everyone can get hit like that
Hagler won he landed more punches
Boxing at its finest
Is Cosell being a bit of a fan boy/apologist for Vito?
vito orgoglio italiano
The marvellous against the rock of gibraltar
Rispettare il mito dell'eroe italiano Vito Antuofermo, e basta!
Nothing like 15 rounds!
Antuofermo was like a piece of iron
you can tell Howard is rooting for Antuofermo
As it should be
What a fight! The masterpiece of Antuofermo! I personally think that Hagler actually was ahead by a fistful of points but honestly the draw was the right choice! Even if I knew the results end even if Hagler is my favorite boxer of all time in the medium division, I found myself screaming for Vito to win....maybe because he is Italian like me or maybe because I can actually see his LION HEART!
R.I.P Marvelous
Vito was a hell of a hammer
I've scored a lot of fights and this has to be one of the worst outcomes that I've ever witnessed. Antuofermo was a super conditioned athlete but he was a mauler that rarely hit Hagler with anything but shoulders and head. This is a good example of white privilege. Had Hagler been white and Antuofermo black then it would have been an unanimous decision for Hagler
Thats bias not priviledge, fuck priviledge and shit like that.
Vito looks a lot smaller.
Fun 80's fight of different styles. Vito was the stereotypical straight-at-you brawler. Hagler boxed in those days, as he had the speed. Vito's chin was a rock but his face was paper. Hagler couldn't be hurt on his worst day. Hagler had this one by a couple rounds, bad call by the judges.
Un pareggio più che giusto
