Porters engine is insane. He seems to have played a ridiculous amount of Ireland games for the full running time which is just crazy. He single-handedly deflects attention from the fact we are actually quite vulnerable at loosehead.
I also recommend watching his episode on 6n full contact, was a brilliant and humane insight to what its like to be a pro rugby player
He played 90 minutes in the chsmpion cup final - absolute freak

I like the criteria and I agree, basics first. Doesn't matter how good your game is, have to be dominant at scrumtime. Never any doubt about Ox. I agree with Porter at 2nd as well.

I loved that Ox Nche, a prop, got man of the match against Ireland, even thought SA lost.
Good list. Kitshoff is more than a great scrummager. His work at the breakdown is part of his appeal. I would rate porter above nche because of his play out of the scrums. Nche is, however, developing soft hands, so it's a toss-up for me. The margins are small except when you get to the scrum...then there is only one guy. Ox is boss

Pretty hard to argue think I'd have de groot and Bell a little higher as an Irish fan I'm a bit worried (even though its impressive) about all the 70+ minutes porter is putting in I see him emulating furlongs injury ravaged later career for the same reasons you can only sustain that for so long before your body pays the price

First person who came to mind before looking at your list, for number 1 - is Ox Nche.
No one is as destructive in Scrums and he is very good in general play
Mind you the no 3 for the u20 boks is huge and highly mobile from the one try I saw him score. 👀
What a time to be alive, there are so many world class props that a top 10 couldn't include them all. I thought Genge was superb against Ireland in the six nations, and just for that performance he deserved a spot in
Great program. Would like to suggest you can somehow incorporate each players vital statistics somewhere on the page?? I’m talking about age, weight etc.

The recent test series in South Africa vs Ireland, number 1 vs 2 in the world it was always going to be hard fought, thus the drawn series 1-1, pity there was no third game. South Africa came out and played some entertaining running rugby, but against top teams games are hard and not flowing. So one week later we hand out free springbok caps against Portugal to check depth. I get it loads of rugby, rest players, look at what you have for rugby 2027, but really would this not be the ideal time to try the new game plan with lower level team and gets things close to perfect as you can? I am a huge rugby fan and enjoy the camaraderie in the rugby world. Also your podcast is great keep up the great work. Enjoy your next trip back to South Africa.

De Groot should be further up there. This Rugby Championship will show what a good prop he is.
He’s better than Schoeman and Baille for sure.
He is definitely a better scrummer and is solid in defence. Schoeman is a decent ball carrier.

I just love your work.
Genge never gets the credit he deserves. Easily in top 10 looseheads in the world. Scrummed excellently throughout the 6N’s especially up against Antonio in the French game. He’s had Furlong on toast on numerous occasions. He was fantastic in the Oz series that England won completely outperforming Bell etc, etc.
He was badly missed by England in the recent NZ series.
I think he gets lumped in with Sinckler scrum-wise as they’ve been on together when it’s gone wrong. But I agree, he’s not a weakness there
LMFAO Ethan Degroot has owned all these guys other than maybe the french guy. He's the most consistent go forward prop in the world right now.
A loosehead cannot "own" another loosehead.
Rly glad these are back! Been watching since you did these after the 2023 6N (feels a million years ago now).. Would you consider looking back on those pics by position and having a stab at which ones you feel best and worst about judging with all the rugby played since?

Willliams didn't get much game time in super rugby. Injuries then cruz missed quarterfinals. He'll likely be nz no2 soon. Baxter has great potential. Standout in that HC match v UBB, then his performance in NZ. Huge future.
De Groot 6th seems low. He's been in form all season and the only scrummager to counter and nullify Newell so far this season. RC scrums will be the true test tho
I'm still unsure why Porter is so high on these lists. Good player but i wouldn't rank him in the top 5 at all. Maybe I'm missing something? 🤔
He has a decent engine but gets away with dark arts at scrumtime.

Great selection of the top 10, can’t argue against any.
I feel Porter gets too much leeway by refs, he does some obvious illegal tactics and somehow they let him get away with it too often, except in that RWC QF, there he got called out and had nowhere to go.
Other than that, the 3 best total front rows Sa, NZ, Fra and followed by Ire. Ireland and SA will need replacing by the next World Cup so NZ and Fra are looking menacing come 2027.

Bell has spent so much of the past two years injured but isn't too far away from getting back on the park. He isn't top tier at scrum time ... yet. He and Tamaiti Williams are both 23, turning 24 this year, and both are good ball players, not just set piece performers. Mind you, Bell can run a lot faster. He's easily the fastest runner of those listed here (subject to how his injuries have healed up).
One to watch out for in the TRC is Isaac Kailea, another youngster, who made his debut for Australia against Wales a few weeks ago - 190cm and 129kg and immediately looked right at home in test rugby.
Number 1 for Ireland that bloke has stones the size of watermelons
Tu'ungafasi is severly under rated. Had a superb Super Rugby season and was the anchor of the Blues forward pack
would be interested in top 10 lists for solely england eligible players - perhaps released to tie in with the squad announcement this autumn
As a Blues fan I do like Tuʻungafasi, I'd still have a hard time arguing for his inclusion in this list, a fine bunch to be sure. I suspect he's still the ABs side because of his knowledge and implementation of the dark arts of the front row. ;^)

Can't put Ox Nche any higher than 4. Baille, Kitshoff and Porter all scrum well and do more around the park, Nche is up there cos he's the best scrummager. That's like picking a fly half purely for goal kicking. Porter is my current number one. Does everything and can do it well for 80 minutes.
Don’t forget the All Ireland football final is on now BBC2 Northern Ireland

Porter is debatable for me.. If it’s not penalties, cynical play, he is pulling down the opposition props in scrums. . Agree, One credit is that he plays full 80 comfortably.

Look at his penalty count in scrums, how many times did he get penalized in the 6 nations , definitely more than the other starting prop for Ireland.

Interesting that you mentioned Ox's performance in the world cup against France, Ireland and England but didn't mention his performance against NZ in the final? Why not? I'd like to hear your opinion on that.
He won game defining penalties in the quarter and semi. I didn't mention Scotland game or Ireland pool game either...those 2 scrums were SO consequential.

Realistically De Groot, Tamati, Porter and 7 South Africans.
De groot is number 1 for me. He rolled all the props ahead of him
Danilo Fischetti has to be in for me, although I perhaps underrated Pierre Schoeman in my list as I’ve left him out entirely.

Pierre Schoeman is also a favorite Prop for me, for his commitment and general play impact - but he is not as dominant as others in Scrums

I would put De Groot 2nd and Schoeman 3rd. They are powerhouses and can play around the park as well.
I cannot agree with Porter. He is big and he is strong, but his technique in pulling with his arm, is going to cause more and more issues as referees catch this. It is also dangerous as lesser props will not be able to correct his pulling, as Frans Malherbe did. He is stong enough to keep his bind and push straight and monster the tight head that way, so why resort to putting the scrum in a compromising position. Some of these collapses are going to cause serious injuries. He also gives away too many penalties at rucks. He is better than that.
Rugby void? Rassie and Co will drop the team nice and early for us next week to discuss. When you’re an Saffa, there’s no rugby void. Rugby is life.
I am going out on a limb here and I think most of us could call the No9 (scrum half that is) already 🙂

Re Andrew Porter, very good player, but if you go back and look at the 2nd tesr Ireland v Springboks Porters bind was illegal-the laws state props must bind on their opponents BACKS.Porter was binding on the side with his elbow toward the ground and thereby pulling his opponent down and destabilising him. No response from any of the officials( all Northern Hemisphere) who were overall pretty poor.
That is why you always play to the whistle.

The "a" in Schoeman is pronounced as the "u" in Sun, Fun, Bun, Stun.

De Groot should perhaps be higher. Arguably, Kitshoff should perhaps not even be in the top 10 at the moment. Has looked tired since the World Cup and notndone much.
A few other saffers could also be knocking in the door.
While the amount of minutes and work Porter gets through is remarkable, he gets away with illegal scrumming. He is so blatant sometimes I'm reluctant to call it the dark arts of prop scrumming.

In general I agree however schoeman should be 3rd kits isn’t playing and Cyril isn’t on form, also if Porter doesn’t have someone to hold his arm up in a scrum how can he classed as a prop

Yeah, except there's a more relevant statistic regarding Andrew Porter. He has played for Ireland against the Springboks 4 times. Ireland have won 3 of those matches. Nuff said.

Porter is good in the scrum can last the full game but he is not imo number 2, he has way too many brain farts and is almost certain to give away stupid penalties every game with some of these been the difference in a final result ! He badly needs to become a lot less hot headed then he can be the best possibly

I think the South Africans rate the ABs front row a lot.
The interesting thing is that SA has props coming out of its ears at the moment, and it isn't necessarily even the best scrummagers that get to play.
Front row isn't a problem for AB's right now, but the locks ...
@Hiltok yep. Except we do have enough tall big timber playing super rugby,but young.I reckon pick them and back the coaching to integrate them..Still not sure why they haven't investing Parkinson from highlanders ,2m plus and 140kg.
