For people before watching the full thing, wondering why the description says this is from the trading cards but there is a bunch of 2024 stuff: The first half of this video is new. The original 2022 video starts at 23:10
I work at a video game museum and i can tell you that there are still kids that like old nintendo stuff. One kid actually reminded me of young you, he was excitedly jumping and wanted to screamed to his dad that he found the nintendo room. Luckily I can confirm that the youth is also interested in retro gaming. I also started emulating more since I started working there like I did 14 years ago, good stuff.
I’ve always been interested in that stuff, when I was in 2nd or 3rd grade I saved up to buy a gameboy advance and Pokémon. I was always so excited to see something old
7:51 small correction, the game sprites were developed for 4:3, but they weren't developed to have square pixels. This is why in games like Kirby Super Star you'll end up with an egg-shaped Kirby if you play in 1:1 mode. He looks circular once the picture is stretched to 4:3. CRT displays would simply beam the image onto the screen at 4:3 without regard for how many "pixels" existed on each line, and developers knew this.
This was my introduction to the NES library at age 12. The starter library did its job for introducing me to the world of NES, but as it went on, it really allowed me to explore the library better. It was my first real taste of the early Nintendo era, and it made seeking out ways to play the other consoles even more.
12:38 you hit a fantastic point there. The NSO library is like entering a friend's house and trying out their collection of classics and the weird stuff in-between
I get people like Scott are tired of the same games for Nintendo's 8-bit platform getting reissued multiple times but that shouldn't devalue the games as a whole, especially to ones that had never been avaliable either in certain regions or as a whole. I feel the game library for the Famicom and NES NSO apps is for the most part, solid! Nintendo still has a few remaining first party games along with a dozen or so possible third party additions, which makes me believe we are likely to see over 100+ games offered on just this platform alone (which makes up roughly 1/3 of the entire NSO game library). I am disappointed with the lack of care to provide English translations for the Japanese-only games but this has been a problem since Wii Virtual Console, it still stings regardless especially because some of those games are well worth playing.
Unfortunately, there's no money to be made translating games that will only exist as part of a subscription service. Nintendo has a very conservative view of economics; even if more than 50% of the Switch user base played a translation of a Famicom ROM, there's no financial incentive in doing it unless you could make a profit. That's why Famicom Detective Club was released on the Switch in the way that it was, probably with insurance from the execs that if it did well enough they would greenlit a new game in the series.
Let's put it this way You could've pirated those games easily, using emulators that play them just as well, if not even better than NSO (in fact, NES online multiplayer was figured out for years), as easily as NSO (let's be honest, it's not emulators that are hard - it's you that suck at setting them up, aka dragging n dropping rom and setting up controls for yourself) It's been over 30 years Everyone is sick to death of Urban Champion and Mario Bros It's not the value you (conditioned yourself to) think it is
I feel bad for all the kids growing up with these subscription services, they will be able to access none of this stuff when they're nostalgic in the future because it will all be offline
The NES online is alright, but I already have three other ways to play NES games digitally like on 3DS, Wii, and Raspberry Pi! But I like how the Switch online keeps updating new games especially the obscure ones and have online multiplayer for some games! Also Donkey Kong Jr Math is a bad educational game that my friend Richard got as a punishment for having bad grades in math! His parents wouldn’t let him get Castlevania nor Legend of Zelda until he improved his math grades in elementary school!
I like the idea that Scott opened up Donkey Kong Jr Math and went "wait a second, this sucks! here, let me make a /40 minute long video on the topic/".

The N64 alone had such a weirdly designed controller where the button mapping might be with that very design in mind to work optionally and being able to tweak the buttons would just be really convenient I mean, ffs. True. And I guess that is technically a workaround but it really would be a lot more efficient and practical to allow it on a per game basis and individually map them depending on the game you are playing

It's been around 6 years and not a single game has been delisted from it (something the Virtual Console couldn't say). The value of especially the Standard tier ($20 a year is under 2 bucks a month) is wild.

We could get a lot of obscure stuff, but since these aren’t put onto a digital store to rot for $5 and instead being put into a separate application, this allow these smaller and less known games to shine
This is absolutely true. One of the great things about NSO is playing obscure old stuff you may have never heard of you certainly wouldn't have picked up in the Wii/3DS/Wii U era when every NES game was $5, SNES $8, and N64 $10. I would never have bought Iggy's Wrecking Balls on Virtual Console for $10 but if I'm getting it as part of a service I'm already paying for? Why not do a few rounds?
I've never played the game, but the movie of Quest for Camelot will always hold a special place in my heart, right next to We're Back! A Dinosaurs Story.
I just hate having to jump with the switch's A button, I much prefer jumping with B and the fact they don't give me an easy option to do that completely ruins the NES and N64 games. The SNES only works because it has the exact same button layout as the switch
I kinda don’t like that they have all of these classic controllers you can buy, but you cant own the retro games outright. When they take switch online down you just have these cool controllers that will be useless one day.
They've already made it clear that NSO is carrying over to Switch 2. Say Switch 3 comes out in 2033 and isn't compatible...NSO would've still lasted 15 years. None of us can see the future ofc but given how Nintendo, like everyone else, wants to push people to subscriptions, I see no reason they'd discontinue NSO then either. Price hikes are likely at some point, though.
I said that I would not get the service for years. A subscription service for roms with no way to own them?? I was against the idea altogether and nostalgically loved the old virtual console. This year, Nintendo convinced me to subscribe with expanded. The exclusive hardware is what pushed me over the edge. The collection is pretty decent now too. I love the wireless controllers, they make the experience authentic. I think it was a great idea. Gotta get the Japanese exclusive Famicon and mega drive 6-button controllers now. I got the Alarmo too. I feel that it became worth it now to subscribe in 2024. It’s funny how Nintendo can make me uninterested, to bingeing in FOMO with the same thing later. I did it with the older consoles too but especially the Wii U.
Those weird sidebars and the fact your avatar is displayed the whole time is the reason I gave up on this and went back to alternative handheld consoles for my 8-bit/16-bit games .
whoa, Solar Jetman?? I got that game for free with my NES as a kid (this was in like, 2008), had no idea how to play it, and it's been gathering dust in my collection ever since
I would prefer to buy a dlc that puts the games on the NSO emulators, than to buy the collections Capcom and Konami puts out. I like how they are organized in the emulator.
I remember on the original Wii, NES games on Virtual Console had a suspend point but you couldn't actually save manually to the suspend point so when you exited out of the game you just had to hope it actually saved 😅
The "SP" versions are so weird. One feature I would have liked for the Switch Online are unlockable "cheats" that you unlock with Amiibo. Take Metroid for example, use the Samus Amiibo to get every power up, or the Ridley Amiibo to set your health to 1 and have a "No Damage Challenge", or any Mario Amiibo giving you a random item in Mario 3. It's not hard to manipulate an NES game at this point and I think it's more fun than clogging your library with repeats.
It checks the internet to see if you have nso online every time you start the app, so if you’re on a plane and don’t already have the app open, you can’t start it
17:00 I have three sons, 7-17, they all played and still play the Nintendo classics. The older two's first consoles were emulator boxes I'd set up on netbook parts that I salvaged from work scraps.
❗️My Timestamps: 14:57 It's pronounced 'Bay-bel', not "Bah-bul". 17:17 When I first got my Switch in mid-July 2020, I did subscribe to the NSO but after about 14 months, I realised I wasn't playing ANY of the S/NES games as I was too busy on 'Fortnite' and 'Rocket League'. Also, I already had the best of the S/NES/MD on my N3DS:XL, the S/NES Mini Consoles and BittBoy: Pocket-Go so I stopped paying and haven't really been back since.
How do you feel about Nintendo’s music service? Do you think it was better to make that or was it a better idea to just drop it all on regular streaming platforms?
What will happen 10 years from now when Nintendo eliminates support for NSO? Will Nintendo offer a chance to buy and download retro titles straight out or will the NES/SNES/N64 controllers become shelf decor?
17:03 There are. I was at a big family dinner and saw this kids switch filled with saves from a bunch of these games. I doubt their parents told them about these old games. Bro was just vibing to super mario
@alexandrebelair4360 a large chunk is SMB 3, easily one of my favorite games of all time. But I also just really love playing old games for 10-20min spats here and there and work for high scores periodically with friends and family.
It's always annoying to me that after decades of telling everyone that Journey to Silius and Mysterious Murasame Castle and Joy Mech Fight are classic gems that people need to experience every time there's an update with some legendary title like that people don't get how special this is and shit on them in the RUclips comments. Like last year Nintendo officially released Joy Mech Fight for the first time outside of Japan and people in the comments on that video were all "what's this crap, release Pokemon" rather than appreciating that this game is legendary and what a milestone it is and how much it influenced future fighting games (Smash's DNA goes straight back to Joy Mech Fight) to get to easily play it on the same device you play everything else on. I remember RUclipsrs nearly 20 years ago who would have absolutely shit themselves if it'd popped up on the Wii VC at that time but the current set of RUclipsrs just doesn't care. EDIT: To be clear, I'm writing this comment to thank Scott for specifically calling out the three games I mentioned in my first sentence. I appreciate calling out what a big deal Silius and Mysterious Murasame Castle are to have readily available.
Because those games are super niche. Face it, the vast majority of NES games have badly aged, people just don't want to play janky nes games. They certainly brought a lot to gaming but the vast majority doesn't want to play them because they aged badly. Also, 20 years ago youtube didn't exist, it came out in december 2005
@@alexandrebelair4360 I'm rounding because Journey to Silius is a game I played for the first time after watching Deceased Crab's Let's Play of it in 2007. I think that's close enough to 20 years for our purposes. It wasn't a game I had back in my 1990s NES collection because it was a more obscure title, but it was super influential on other titles and you can really see the progression. The point of services like NSO is to make previously obscure games more accessible and allow people to experience the history of video games like a museum walk, and a lot of that is titles that aren't particularly famous but SHOULD be because they're very influential and should be experienced to get an idea of how the medium has evolved over time. My point is people's reaction when an NSO drop has rare and obscure titles shouldn't be "Where's X super famous game" which is just incredibly disrespectful to the purpose of the service, experiencing the evolution of gaming. Atari 50 Collection is probably my favorite game this generation because the interview footage and how it put the cultural impact of these titles in context, and I think NSO has the potential to be a showcase of a far broader set of titles.
I’m still incredibly bummed out that Nintendo only released the Japanese version along with a “it may feel familiar” disclaimer. Tetris Attack is my #2 favorite game of all time
I'm a very old person so I like the CRT filter. I've spent hundreds of dollars to put an RGB mod into an NES and then run that through a SCART cable into a RetroTINK 4K to give me that old CRT glow. Yes I'm weird. No I don't mind.
8:36 thank you 🙏 I’ve been waiting for someone to talk about all that crap on screen. I just want normal 4:3 with black borders. Is that so much to ask?
I think the Nintendo Switch Online service games are used as a perk and justification. PS Plus does it too, they give you perks to make you pretend that they're giving you a good value for something you used to get for free. You can say NS Online is a good value, I wouldn't disagree, the problem with these programs is, no matter the value of the perks, they're essentially a forced subscription. It's not a Nintendo thing, it's a consoles' thing. They were just the outlier until they fell to that level too.
I really wish they wouldn't lock these games behind the subscription only. It would be really nice to have the option to buy them individually if you wanted. I find that really annoying after coming from the Wii U and 3DS. There's really no reason not to offer it, but that's Nintendo for you.
It would have been smart of Capcom and Konami to add 1 game from the collections they want to sell on here. It would mean they would be paid for what is essentially free advertising. That's the dream.
17:00 although I m 18 now , I was like that those 7 years ago when switch came out … man … he isint talking about me anymore , this just hit me like that…

I just hate having to jump with the switch's A button, I much prefer jumping with B and the fact they don't give me an easy option to do that completely ruins the NES and N64 games. The SNES only works because it has the exact same button layout as the switch
Scott, you already talked about this in your Virtual Console VS. NSO video. Did you take your meds today?
I don't know why I'm only realizing this now, but he's definitely just laying on the floor when he records these lmao.
how do we tell him
You're not gonna believe this, but he literally has a table with carpet on it that he does these videos on 😂😂
@@DonWeaselYeehawEdition I refuse to believe it
@@DonWeaselYeehawEditionNo, he's laying on his belly on the ground kicking his feet with a camera strapped to his forehead
I really don’t understand why some people say the emulation quality sucks. The only small problem is like n64, but it doesn’t even look bad.
Im hoping that Little Samson will arrive on NSO sometime. It's a really good game that deserves to be easily available.
I kinda don’t like that they have all
of these classic controllers you can buy, but you cant own the retro games outright. When they take switch online down you just have these cool controllers that will be useless one day.
Not completely useless, some fames are compatible with the limited buttons
I think you can get them to work on pc, they're just switch controllers deep down
They've already made it clear that NSO is carrying over to Switch 2.
17:00 "That's Me!"
-Big from Sonic
8:11 Its me, I'm the Gremlin lol. I use the CRT filter, it makes the pixels look better.
The problem with amibo is that it's easy to just get NFC cards and circumvent amibo.
How is that a problem tho ?
It checks the internet to see if you have nso online every time you start the app, so if you’re on a plane and don’t already have the app open, you can’t start it
It does dat if you haven't opened it in the last week.
17:00 I have three sons, 7-17, they all played and still play the Nintendo classics. The older two's first consoles were emulator boxes I'd set up on netbook parts that I salvaged from work scraps.
❗️My Timestamps:
14:57 It's pronounced 'Bay-bel', not "Bah-bul".
Scitt including an old video from 2022 in here is a cool metaphor for Nintendo repackaging their old games in a new consol
Fine, you got me. I'm watching both.
3 things
1st fun video
2nd I use NSO quite often(NES alone is 250hrs+
3rd please use custom sort if you don't like the "SP" editions.
What are you playing tho? There isn't 250hrs+ of content.
One day we’ll look back at the switch as fondly as we do now with the GameCube
If the can redo Mystery Tower’s title screen, I really hope they rerelease the American Tetris Attack as “Yoshi’s Puzzle League” or something.
I’m still incredibly bummed out that Nintendo only released the Japanese version along with a “it may feel familiar” disclaimer. Tetris Attack is my #2 favorite game of all time
I really do not get the obsession with the reskins of Panel de Pon. They always felt lesser to me
9:16 dang I just learned this. Thanks
Ofc there’s 820 people that want to watch Scott talk about NES Online
Scott... games this old were DEVELOPED on CRT displays... that's how they're SUPPOSED to look...
Finally, some love for Fire n Ice
The thing that grind my gears about this. Is i already paid for the expansion for splatoon 2. And i did get my money back for it.
The fact that Scott repeated himself by mentioning Eliminator Boat Duel is kind of funny to me
I think the left and right sides go pure black if you use the matching switch online controllers.
17:00 *me, slowly raising my hand in the back*
Kids still love old stuff! About two months ago, I sold a Sony Trinitron CRT to a 12 year old!
Gotta love the way Scott says "down the line"
I really hope Urban Champion comes for the Switch II.
I believe the iwatta easter egg was removed as it was an 'omamori'.
I'm really glad you pointed out that this is currently the best bang for your buck when it comes to the paid services.
Let me buy individual games Nintendo
I really wish they wouldn't lock these games behind the subscription only. It would be really nice to have the option to buy them individually if you wanted.
I find that really annoying after coming from the Wii U and 3DS.
There's really no reason not to offer it, but that's Nintendo for you.
Good idea about a option special edition.
It would have been smart of Capcom and Konami to add 1 game from the collections they want to sell on here. It would mean they would be paid for what is essentially free advertising. That's the dream.
You know that could explain why Sega has 4 different ways to play/own Sonic 2 on the Switch.
40:35 if only late 2022 Scott knew what was to come
17:00 although I m 18 now , I was like that those 7 years ago when switch came out
… man … he isint talking about me anymore , this just hit me like that…
DEAR SCOTT, JUDGE 'EM ALL. - Your Viewers
I dont get the description
This video was released in late 2022 yet sonic x shadow are the?
23:11 is the 2022 version
Never noticed how much Scott says y'know
2 Scotts 1 Woz
This is all I wanted but its sitting unused for 3 years now because of severe drifting issue. So I use emulators lol.
Ive started to view nes games as mobile games in the way where ill play one game if i dont have alot of time to really sink my teeth into the game. So nes games are really nice to play for like 5 minutes.
