    Emio - The Smiling Man really does earn that M rating by the end of the game. There's certain imagery and themes discussed, especially in the epilogue, that are pretty disturbing and upsetting especially for a Nintendo game.

    • @gamer3ed484
      @gamer3ed484 День назад +21

      Yeah. By the time the credits rolled, I was not 100% sold. It felt like it was an extremely soft M-Rating and that the story wrapped up a little too quickly.
      But then the epilogue happened and…let’s just say that was one of the most disturbing things I’ve seen in any game, let alone a Nintendo game.
      The game as a whole was like an 8/10 for me, but that epilogue bumps it up to a 9 or 10 easily.

    • @hexenvexen
      @hexenvexen День назад +1

      @@Sar1386 The main story never gets too bad, there is some blood but overall it's very much a soft M-rating. However once the first credits role and you unlock the epilogue, the game actually gives you a content warning saying "hey you should make sure you're ready before you play this", and yeah the epilogue is significantly darker and more disturbing than the main game but also the best part of the story by far. It alone bumped the game from an 8/10 to a 9/10 for me. I think Nintendo purposefully made it separate from the main game in case some people aren't able to handle it.
      I'm not a VN expert but others I've enjoyed in the past are 999, Ghost Trick, and Ace Attorney. I also recommend 13 Sentinels Aegis Rim, it's half VN and half RTS with an amazing story.

So poorly that NoA changed the name for the English version. Instead of *Famicom Detective Club: The Smiling Man,* we got _Emio - The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club._ They clearly felt that they had to obscure the fact that it's a part of that series. It'll probably help. I imagine this will sell better than the first two. There's almost no game-play of them on RUclips. Not a good sign... Oh, and The Smiling Man is actually the fourth game. Devil's Third was pretty awesome. I remember I was playing Xenoblade X when Devil's Third got to my home. I was like "Okay, let me check this"... Then I spend a week only playing Devil's Third and only came back to Xenoblade X 30 hours later. The single-player was GREAT. The style of the game was great, the cheesy plot was funny as hell, the boss battles were excellent, changing from gun fight to sword fight was handled just perfectly. And the only multiplayer was just insane, some of the best I've ever played. I really don't understand why reviewers hated it... but it was during that time when it was cool to hate Nintendo and the Wii U, and many reviewers on RUclips were the "angry type" that targeted Nintendo, so I guess there is there. My only problem with Devil's Third was the not so great framerate, but it was very playable and not really much different from most games at the time.
    And I am 100% sure many reviewers did NOT play the game. Jim Sterling comments on the plot and gameplay elements were factually wrong, you could clearly see he did not play the game (and at the time he was an huge anti-SJW, anti-feminism, so his content was just trash back then). IGN's review also had the same issues and they claimed to have played the multiplayer when the multiplayer simply wasn't online yet (so they just flatout lied). But hey, professional online gaming journalism was just pure garbage, no wonder they are all dead today.
    By the way, I also remember the marketing for this game being terrible. The only multiplayer trailer they had on RUclips at the time was actually uploaded by me (on this very account). It went viral with over 139k views and it was the second most viewed video of the game on RUclips (behind the E3 trailer). I still have the video, but it's on private now - and it was also na E3 trailer, much more interesting than the original and Nintendo simply didn't even bothered to release it (I don't remember how I got my hands on it, maybe a press release or some random website somwhere).
    I also made a comparison video showing the evolution of the game when compared to the E3 gameplay and Itagaki even commented on it on Facebook.

      I dunno about the performance being on par with most games on the time, since while there were definitely some PS3 or 360 games that ran poorly like Far Cry 3, even then DT is probably worse than those, but by 2015 PS4 and Xbox One made at least locked 30 to be the standard for 2 years, and also most of Nintendo's games on Wii U ran pretty well, so it was at least one of the worst runnings games of the year and it's console.

    It's crazy how much the kid friendly image from the NES and early SNES days stuck with Nintendo. The Mortal Kombat games post the first one were uncensored on SNES. The SNES got Doom, Doom Troopers, and Primal Rage (though, that one did censor the one fatality where you urinate on the enemy... so maybe some remaining censorship). The N64 had the Turok series as console exclusives, as well as Perfect Dark, and Conker. Gamecube got plenty of M rated games, and actual nudity with BMX XXX (which other consoles didn't have).

    19:36 funny The Last Story is mentioned because in Europe it was actually rated PEGI 16 (so was Metroid Other M funnily enough) and on occasions PEGI 16 games do correlate with Mature rated games in North America (including the latter Bayonetta titles and the last two Battlefields) but both titles were rated Teen here. I guess the ESRB viewed them in the upper end of that spectrum, high enough to be firmly Teen rated but not enough for a Mature rating.

    Episodes like this make me wonder what Scott and friends decide on for editing and release order for these Stash carpet videos. The Zelda video last week referenced Echos of Wisdom so unless he also tacked on that acknowledgement then he filmed that after it was revealed in June. This episode was stated to have been filmed in February and then he had to add the Emio section afterward - sometime after that released in August. Curious to know if this was something he did 8 months ago and is uploading now, how much of a backlog he's built up.
